Amazing, for a while it looked like we're going to have Zurich 2002 on our hands again.
Well done Gisela, but she mustn't choke like this. It was awful!
Fantastic effort by Svetlana, but unnecessary IMO.

Good match by Dulko and a great win. Made it hard for herself in the second set with a lot of errors. Svetlana played well considering her back pain.

Svetlana Kuznetsova suffered another blow to her hopes of defending the US Open title with a defeat to Gisela Dulko in the Rogers Cup in Toronto.

Kuznetsova, who has not won a title all year, required on-court treatment for a back problem during the match. And Dulko ensured the Russian's record will not improve ahead of Flushing Meadows in a 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (10-8) win.

Could the defending US Open champ be in worse form?
She has been in bad form recently but in fairness to Sveta in this match, she was clearly injured. It was definitely impeding her movement and the fact she even played the second set was a surprise and credit to her (as long as she hasn't done any lasting damage by continuing).

I just hope she's fit for the US Open.

Toronto — Gisela Dulko of Argentina upset ailing No. 3 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova to advance to the quarter-finals at the $1.3-million (U.S.) Rogers Cup on Thursday.

Kuznetsova struggled throughout the match with a painful lower back and late in the first set, it appeared she would be unable to finish.

The Russian stayed in the game, but Dulko went on to win the battle between the two 20-year-olds in two tiebreaks, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (8).

The timing of Kuznetsova's back injury is bad news for the Russian, coming just 10 days before she begins defence of her U.S. Open title.

Dulko, 35th in the world singles ranking, showed Kuznetsova no mercy, forcing her into full splits several times as she lunged for crosscourt shots.

Late in the first set and trailing 6-5, Kuznetsova, the No. 4-ranked player in the world, had a trainer massage her back for several minutes. She walked gingerly back onto the court, clutching her back and grimacing, but didn't withdraw.

Between sets, the Russian headed for the locker room, returning in a long-sleeved shirt. Her back seemed to loosen up midway through the second set, but Dulko wasn't giving up, finally finishing off Kuznetsova with a blistering forehand.

Kuznetsova became the first Russian woman to win the US Open singles title last year, beating Elena Dementieva in the all-Russian final.

Good fight from Sveta, respect to her and although she hasnt hit her best form there were some glimpses of that USOpen2004 form, i was impressed with Dulko, she has quite a good serve and very solid groundies on both wings.

Svetlana indeed was injured, but in the second set (at the end) she looked ok, so I don't think the injury made her lose the second set (maybe it affected the 1st set tie-break)

That wasn't any different with Kuznetsova in the draw. She's hopeless this summer. At least last year was consistently making quarters before her improbable New York run.

Mauresmo could surprise Henin-Hardenne but no chance against Clijsters.

Tournament director Stacey Allaster said despite the setbacks, she’s pleased top players like Clijsters (who gets a walk-over), Amelie Mauresmo and Justin Henin-Hardenne are still playing late in the tournament.

And she praised Kuznetsova’s gutsy effort in defeat.

"She was a fighter. When she came off the court (before returning for the second set) she was screaming in pain. The (WTA) Tour asked her if she wanted to continue, but she said yes,’’ Allaster said.

Down 5-4 in the first set but serving at 30-love, Kuznetsova, ranked No. 4 in the world and the reigning U.S. Open champion, "felt a pull’’ in her back. She played two more points but could barely move.

"I cannot turn my body to the side. I cannot push myself for the serve,’’ she said.

Doubled over and wincing, she took an injury time out and received a massage from a WTA trainer.

The Russian told reporters after the match that at the end of the first set she left the court and went to the locker room where she lay down on the floor.

I know Sveta has never withdrawn from any tournament.
But I haven't read what the doctors said after examining Sveta.
