I'm thrilled Steffi is keeping her hand in tennis by playing a few exos periodically throughout the year. Great to see :) However, I wish that Steffi would pick tougher opponents to play. Maybe not necessarily tour players (although that would be fun), but at least retired players who can still hit a mean ball. I would die to see her and Arantxa play again.

With the match against Sabatini last year, she basically gave Gaby a 4-1 lead in the second set to make it look competitive before rolling through the second set 7-5.

I agree that Gabby is not a tough opponent,
they're in their mid-30's now, older. They
look good.

Then again, maybe that's why they picked
Gabby, she knows it's a win! Ha ha.
It's Steffi's event, you don't want to see
her lose do you.

Maybe Gabby will do a little better this time.

It's for Steffi's charity or Andre's charity, or
both isn't it? Does anyone know specifically
what the event is for?

I think it is pretty nice that two old rivals
do this at all. They do seem to be friendly now.

I never got the impression they were even
friendly when they played. I may be wrong on that.
I only watched them the last few years, and I got
the feeling they did not like each other much.

I agree Aranxta would put on a better show on the
court, she just runs at everything. But, they know
Gabby is popular in Germany, and she can help
sell tickets better for the charity.

I think a Gabby-Steffi-Aranxta-Anka doubles
match would be a good show too though!
Does Huber still play? Or Becker, Stich as well.

GOOD QUESTION! How long do you think this current crop of top 20 players can keep the public's attention by missing and pulling out of so many tournaments? I think the mediocre style of play (as far as creativity capable of capturing a tennis-playing public for more than one winner) combined with all the hardcourts has actually hurt the marketability of the tour itself. A little nostalgia for sitting and watching a point actually develop, and remembering when you could catch the same player in the Philadelphia final and then follow them to Madison Square Garden to see how their form is holding up (without worrying about an injury pull-out after you've already spent money on good seats at the Garden)- many tennis fans can relate.

I remember reading that Steffi plans to make the exhibition match for her charity an annual event. I think she also mentioned trying to get Mary Joe Fernandez to play in it as well. (Why doesn't she just ask her old pal, Novotna? I'm sure Jana must miss playing Steffi :D )

I'm going to be in Germany the week after the Graf-Sabatini match, so I might travel there a couple of days earlier and watch two of my favourites live for the very first time. <fingers crossed>

Sunday the match was mentioned on Fox Deportes locally
briefly. The match date and location. They
showed footage of Graf with her kids. Cute
kids. They also showed footage of Gabby
with her brother and sister in law, and Mariano.
It looked like Cathy's birthday party. They were only
standing around. It was funny because they
mentioned how many times Steffi has beaten
Gabby over nearly 20 years. A lot.

20 years, wow.

I remember Mary Carillo and Chris Evert mentioninig that
Gabby & Steffi were not close, in their playing days. They
just kept their distance from each other. Different personalities.
I don't think they hated each other or said mean things about
each other.

So, it is nice to read that Gabby and Steffi both say they
keep in contact a lot these days. Old Geezers that they are
ha ha.

So Cathys birthday was caught on video tape as well, interesting. and we don't even know about it. Thats a shame.
How was it? was it clear that Gaby and Mariano were together?
How did they look?
Too many questions, I know. But I realy want to see new footage of her, but no luck on my side. which channel showed it?

samsung101
Aug 22nd, 2005, 08:28 PM
Fox Deportes is part of Fox Sports, I don't have
any idea what channel it was or is at. Only a few
seconds.

I recognized the clothes Gabby & Cathy had
on, from the photos posted on the website here
at a few places from the party this year.

They all had their arms around each other, a group
photo thing. They were smiling and talking, Mariano
was next to Gabby. They all looked like they had
been partying a lot!

There was more of Cathy than Gabby in it. She
works for Fox Deportes doesn't she? Maybe you
can find something at a site she may have for
her show, if it's still on. That's probably where
the video footage came from, covering one of their
network stars, Cathy.

They never show or talk about who attend those matches. If they did we would have found out that Mariano was there in all her exhibitions, and Cathy and her girls insisted on watching one of Gabys matches, don't know which one but I think the Graf one last year. I found that out by accident when reading a German message board, written by Graf fans and it seems some Gaby fans, they talk a lot about her. You have to be there to know all that happens in exhibition matches. I wish I can go this time.

Sabatini is in awful shape now. It's been too long.

 Do you mean in terms of her tennis? Because everytime I see Gabby she looks more and more beautiful. Of course she's lost a step in tennis, but that's because she's retired now. So there isn't the need to train day in and day out to be in top shape.

Anyway this seems like a fun event, and it's for a good cause so I hope both women have fun. I wish it was closer to where I live though. I never got a chance to see Gabby live.

She can't possibly be out of shape with how she looks now. Slow tennis, yes maybe, people tend to forget she has been retired for exactly 10 years now. 10 years are a whole lot of years of not playing tennis.
Could she possibly look any better, or fitter?

She's playing Sabitini, for more than one reason, cheif among them is people still wish to see Gabby, she's a good drawing card, ASV would probably only draw as many viewers in Spain, and that's still iffy.

Gabriela herself has always said she has a great relationship with Steffi. even during their playing days they got along, when they used to play doubles together, and that grew to a friendships as years passed. Gaby has even said that Steffi and Andre keep inviting her to have dinner with them at home and that she actually promised them to do so. About this, you can read the translation I made from the interview of Gaby during Nasdaq 100, it is in her Admiration thread in BFTP

The article mentions Anna Kournikova - but I can't translate it!
Las dos tenistas son muy amigas, a tal punto que Graf le pidió alguna vez a Sabatini que coteje con la rusa Anna Kurnikova.

Yeah, this is the translation: "Both players are really good friends, as much so as once Graf even asked Sabatini to play against Russian Anna Kournikova."
This refers to an exhibition match Steffi had scheduled to play against Kournilova in Buenos Aires in February 2000, an only some days before Steffi got injured and couldn't play, so she asked Gabriela to replace her not have to give back tickets money and get people dissapointed. Gaby could only prepare for some days (it was long since she had last touched a racket), but it was a fun match to show, even as Anna didn't hit it too hard to let Gaby play, and afterwards they played a mixed-doubles match, Anna and Javier Frana vs. Gabriela and Daniel Lobo (both Argentine retired players), it was very fun

I knwo it really doesn't matter who wins or loses in this match, but when was the last time Sabatini won an exibition match,...against anyone?

Joey_82
Oct 3rd, 2005, 06:24 AM
She only played 3 since she retired, singles that is (she won all the doubles ones she played): against Anna in 2000 against Graf in 2004 and against Hingis in 2005. She lost them all :(

But to tell you the truth it was expected: The Anna match Gaby stepped in for Steffi, after Steffi got injured, She called Gaby up and asked her to do this favor for her, Gaby had not picked up a racket since she retired, then 2 days before the match she was asked to play. It was expected for her to loose that one.

Aginst Steffi in 2004, she played better than 2000, but Steffi was still in the zone, training with Andre and all. Hingis was getting ready to get back in the game, so no chance there. It will be hard to imagine Gaby getting back into her groove, playing as hard as she used to because she refuses to train anymore, She has business' and says tennis is in her past, but plays the exhibitions for the sake of her fans and charity. She always had a good heart.

But no harm in hoping. I would like to believe since the last match Gaby must have added a bit more practice to face Steffi this time. So no harm in hoping that maybe this one might be a really close one, or possibly, maybe possibly win it. :) :bounce: :D

Go Gaby

did you see the match live? was the one where Gaby cried afterwards when she thanked the people? tell us about that please :)

Yes,it was. It was so thrilling to finally see Gaby playing live after her retirement, 'cause she left so abruptly that we fans couldn't watch her in a special farewell match or tournament, the last time I had seen her play live was against Mónica Seles in Canadá '96 R16. So, when it was known that Gabriela was playing instead of Steffi, I was thrilled, and that day I had so much fun watching it. Of course, no one expected her to win, even to be close to Kournikova's ball speed for it was so long since Gaby had last played, Anna was Nº9 in the world then, too. But it was really fun and it was amazing to watch Gabriela's volleys above all (she attacked the net much despite they were on red clay) and her glorious dropshots too. She has unbelievable hands, and she did some amazing drop-volleys as you didn't see on Tour then, not ever since. They played mixed doubles then, pretty fun too,. Gabriela was so moved when she spoke to the spectators, who kept shouting her name as they do during soccer matches: Olé, olé, oléeee .... Gaby... Gabyyy. It was huge!

Anyone in Germany going to the match?

Maybe they can take pictures of Gaby and share them with us here. I doubt any tv station will have it on here. And maybe take pictures of Andre and the kids and Mariano and all the bunch. Would love to see them all there.

I emailed the people incharge of the event and they emailed me telling me if I wanted tickets I should act quick cause it's almost sold out. That was great to hear. Gaby always fills up the house. Vamos Gaby.

I watched a review on German TV.

Steffy played so well. She impressed me. She was really fit going for each ball : the commentator said that she often trains with Agassi, that's why she's that fit.

Her serve and forehand were on fire. They were so powerful. She had so many winners with them. There were many crossed-court serve and forehand winner (cross-court or not). To me she was a power-player today. ;)
Her slice backhand was really effective. :hearts: She found so many angles with it. I wonder why women in today's play don't use it anymore.

Sabatini had some good points especially some great volleys. But, she was many many notches under Graf's level. It's a bit normal since she doesn't train a lot (at least not as often Steffy).

In the second set, Steffy destroyed Gaby. It was a bit painful to watch at the end. But Gaby was very fair-play applauding to every good point of Graf (this means something like at least twice in a game :tape: )
Graf too was fair-play, applauding to some good points of Gaby (maybe 5 times in the match :tape: ), and she even asked the umpire to replay the point on match point. (well, the ball was in and called out by one judge line, so Steffy did the right thing). :worship:

So Steffy really impressed me. I truly think that with her current level she could be a top-20 of today. She started slowly but at the end of the match, she played so well.
And it was great to watch Sabatini, who has an "old" game. :)

Thanks for details. I'm glad they both played some good shots there. I guess it's expected for Steffi to win it. Gaby always gets tired after the first set in todays exhibitions (you cn tell from the score as well), like last year and against hingis. But hey its just great seeing her on court again. I like seeing those two together as well.

I watched part of it on TV.
Really great to see them back on court.
Not the power tennis we see nowadays, but a lot of great single backhand shots as well as forhand shots, aces, df :tape:, and serve and volley.
Sabatini became even more beautiful. And Graf did smile during points - that was new ;)

Well, the review I saw on TV was quite long, but it wasn't the entire match.
I don't know how Gaby used to play, but they showed one back-hand down the line that was a winner. As a fan of Justine, I'm gonna say that it was just ok, nothing really special with it. Apart from this point, she (almost) only hit sliced backhands.
I don't remember her making dropshots (but as I've said, they didn't show the whole match, and it was German TV ;) ). Graf had some dropshots and they were great.
But Gaby had some wonderful volleys. That's what I remember the most from her in this match.

To answer LenaD_Fan, Steffi's forehand was very very powerful, flat, and accurate. Sabitini's bad movement and bad returns of serve probably made it more impressive.
To compare it with today's players is a bit difficult. I mean, today's players wouldn't return Steffy's serve the way Sabatini did today.
But, her forehands were truly good, better than many today's players. As I said , if she still played today, I really think she would be a top-20, why not a top-15.

The interview was quite short. As the match was in Mannheim, Steffi´s home town, she said she did not play matches there for 12 years and the stadium was much bigger compared to that she played then.

The one question+answer for Gaby I remember was quite silly because she was asked about the most important win against Steffi and she answered I don´t know. Well, what about your only Grand Slam victory ? :wavey:
nThe atmosphere was nice though. Sad that Steffi did not answer the question about when will be her next match because she wanted some more spotlight for Gaby and turned the interviewer to her.

Just as info: On Südwest 3 in Germany the match in total will be re-broadcasted in about 6-7 hours from now at 1.15 in the morning.

Joey_82
Oct 15th, 2005, 05:42 PM
They did that the last time too, it's not nice really. They ask Steffi the good questions then turn and ask Gaby a silly one. Steffi is good in how she handles it and she did notice it the last as well, in their match last year. I mean yes it was her country her stadium and all, but still a little respect for Gaby by the commentators would be nice though.
