As usual not a big surprise.

The two Belgians are overwhelming favourite.

Only Wimbledon was a big downer for the two Belgians.

Justine has won 4 out of her 6 tournaments. (What the hell happened in England, Justine ?)

Kim has won 5 out of her 11 tournaments (one out with injury).

Antwerp, Wimbledon and San Diego are the only tournaments that they didn't win (when one of them was present).

9 out of 12 is not all that bad.
Nobody comes close to those statistics.

They played 9 finals, they have won all of them.

They only left scraps for the other players (except Wimbledon). We will see if Myskina and Mauresmo are able to stop Kim and Justine in Canada.

Well, if the top players continue to fall like this, we will see some strange results at the US Open.

At the end of the year we will have a completely different ranking.

IMO the biggest favourites right now are Kim, Justine and Venus. If Lindsay turns up healthy next week, she can be added to that list. I'm a little more doubtful about Maria and Serena, because their injuries only seem to be healing "last-minute".

Amélie also looks to be in good form, but it seems a bit too early to call her a favourite: let's see what she does against Nadia today and hopefully/maybe against Justine in the semi's! I think Mary was also playing well enough to pose a threat, but hopefully she can recover in time to be totally healthy...

The interesting thing about odds is that they represent where money is going. In analyzing the year, there's no logical reason for Davenport to be 12-1, and Sharapova 4-1. Given that she hasn't beaten a top ten player since Miami, I'd be a bit leery of betting on Sharapova at those odds.

Henin-Hardenne... 5-2

She beat one at Wimbledon..ok a highly overrated top ten player, but a top ten player nonetheless...in fact she hasn't lost to a top 10 player since Indian Wells...

those odds are too skinny... there percentage is to high...
you should really search for a better book ....if you bet regually.. after a while most will let you have best odds available.

Yes there is.

Its called "injury".I don't buy that as a generic reason. "injury" isn't impacting the odds on Sharapova. It probably IS impacting the odds on Serena, but not that much.

Odds are never 'wrong', of course. The speculation is in what's impacting the way people bet.She beat one at Wimbledon..ok a highly overrated top ten player, but a top ten player nonetheless...in fact she hasn't lost to a top 10 player since Indian Wells...Good point. I retract that.

The only way that the number one player in the world would receive 12-1 odds in a grand slam singles event is because of her well-known back injury since Wimbledon. No surprise there.

Sharapova's pectoral injury isn't as severe as Davenport and Serena's, which is why her odds were less affected.

I think Clijsters is the faviourite but its hard to choose.

"THE FAVOURTE"..not my fav or the people's fav etc etc..refers to the 1st line of betting. The team/player/etc is at the smallest price to win..that is the least amount of money back for your investment.

kim clijsters is favourite in every market for the US open i have seen. (although earlier, at 1st posting of odds, sharapova was in a few)

Its called "injury". Sharapova is injured and it really affects her game and her ability to practice. So, I am not sure that her odds aren't inflated by people's wishes and desires more than where the odds really lie.

When was the last time Davenport won a Slam? Is that an "over half a decade ago" I hear?

4-1 seems generous for Sharapova, but at least she won a Slam within living memory.

how the hell can they have myskina above Lena? myskinas year has been appaling and Lena is ranked way higher ,I aint saying Lena should be higher right now ,but she SHOULD be above Nastya ...to be honest i reckon Kuznetsova should be below Lena too ,as sher aint much better right now especially with injury.. the above market might be a better guide, mysportsbook's market posted above(volcana) seems very compressed and high in percentages..(this is often done by some during a tourniment to see how it ends and the form/injuries of players, then they adjust the odds to a more open issue)

hope this helps some

Sharapova's injury still allowed her to fight her way past Chakvetadze...Davenports injury prevented her from getting a game against ALG

And Myskina beat Dementieva to reach the QF of Wimbledon, whereas LenaD hasn't even reached a QF of a slam this year, so I'm not surprised...

I just don't see how Mauresmo is more likely to win than Davenport. Is Amelie in the form of her life or something? Or is Davenport unable to step on the court? Neither is true. Lindsay and Amelie should have their odds switched IMO.

This is how I'd put it....

Favorites (aka Belgians):
1. Henin-Hardenne - has won title before and is healthy and playing well
2. Clijsters - has not won title before, is tired from fantastic summer

Contenders:
3. Davenport - injured or not, she's playing this week and should be fresh
4. Venus - depends on which form shows up; could really move up or down
5. Sharapova - has not done well at the US Open.....yet.
6. Mauresmo - just don't see why THIS would be her slam...seems unlikely
7. Serena - has not looked good in months; can she get it together quickly?

Small Outside Shots (injured Russians, veterans, phenoms, etc.):
8. Elena Dementieva - not playing well but didn't last year before finals run either
9. Svetlana Kuznetsova - injured and looking bad, but a champ is still a champ
10. Mary Pierce - perennial 4th rounder is looking great but needs to recuperate
11. Ana Ivanovic - if the injury is serious, disregard...
12. Nicole Vaidisova - today's match against JHH is telling
13. Anastasia Myskina - needs a dream draw

That's about it. 13 players who could take the title. That last group has little shot unless the draw opens up completely. That usually doesn't happen, but it did last year. Generally, the best players win the US Open, which is why those top 7 should win the title.

Coming into the US, I really don't know whats going to happen. Lindsay is due to play New Haven tomorrow and has said her back is 'fine'. Serena is just....she's injured. Venus is also injured, apparently. Could come back playing like in Stanford, or show dominant latter stages of Wimbledon form. IMO, if both Venus and Lindsay come in playing good tennis, they beat/challenge Kim more than anyone else so has far this summer.

Justine will be there in the latter stages. But doesn't have the wins she had going into the French. But she has won it before and you can never count her out. It wasn't long ago when she was the hot favourite for Wimbledon. Justine has however, failed to beat an 'elite' player that was playing good tennis against her for three sets this year.

Mauresmo......she's not winning this or any other USO.

Maria....nobody is gonna know where she's at going in as she was last seen sick and injured? against Anna. She's a lot more beatable on hard than grass...and don't see her winning. Semi's at most.

Kuzzy, Demented, Myskina, Molik are not in slam winning form and don't think they have a chance in hell.
