WORLD NUMBER ONE LINDSAY DAVENPORT TO PLAY WISMILAK INTERNATIONAL 2005

Yet another milestone in the history of the Wismilak International was reached today when reigning world number one Lindsay Davenport announced that she will take part in South East Asia’s richest women’s tennis event.

Lindsay is recognised as one of the greatest players of all time, after reaching number one in both singles and doubles and winning Wimbledon, the Australian Open and the US Open. This year alone, she has also reached the finals of both the Australian Open and Wimbledon, and has won titles in Dubai and Amelia Island.

With a total of 47 singles titles, Lindsay has also claimed 35 doubles crowns, and earlier this year she contested the final of the Australian Open with partner Corina Morariu.

That occasion was especially poignant for Lindsay, who first teamed up with Corina in 1998. She put at risk her chances of winning the singles title by refusing to let down her partner and abandoning her doubles campaign. But she had no regrets.

“For us to stand here today is pretty remarkable,” said Davenport after the final. “Four years ago, I was in the finals here with Corina. Three and a half months later I got a call from her family saying she was in critical condition in the hospital with leukaemia.

“If someone had told me at that time four years later we'd have another opportunity to play in the finals of doubles here, I would be forever grateful, and that's how I look at it. We just thought it was a pretty cool thing after four years to be back, when certainly for years there we didn't think there was any possibility of playing, let alone trying to win it again.”

Lindsay will join other top stars such as defending champion Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia, Switzerland’s Patty Schnyder and one of the fastest rising stars on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, Serbia’s Jelena Jankovic.

“We are delighted that a player of Lindsay Davenport’s stature wants to play in Bali,” said tournament director Kevin Livesey. “The reputation of the tournament as one that offers fierce competition in a relaxing environment is a tribute to all those who make the Wismilak International such a popular event with both players and spectators.

“We are also thrilled to welcome back many ‘old friends’ such as Svetlana Kuznetsova and Jill Craybas, as well as to welcome new faces to Bali, such as Patty Schnyder and Francesca Schiavone.”

Davenport Biography:
Has won 47 singles titles and 35 doubles titles.
Has won Grand Slam singles titles at US Open (1998), Wimbledon (1999), Australian Open (2000).
Has reached a further four Grand Slam finals, including 2005 Australian Open and 2005 Wimbledon.
First reached number one in singles in October 1998 and took over the number one ranking for the fourth time in October 2004.
Reached number one in doubles in October 1997.
Won seven singles titles in 2004, more than any other player.
Won the singles gold medal at 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
Voted by journalists as winner of 2000 Prix Orange at Roland Garros as the friendliest and most approachable player on Sony Ericsson WTA Tour.

Prediction: Davenport makes the US Open final winning and withdraws from here. Or, she gets injured in the semis against a player that goes on to win their first grand slam.

Sadly she won't. She just had her second surgery and won't be back till next year at least. So technically, after Wismilak, she won't have rank at all. :sobbing:.

Israelis can visit Indonesia if they are invited by a registered Indonesian institution, arrange a clearance from the Directorate of Immigration, and apply for a visa in the Indonesian Embassy in Singapore. The whole process takes about 4 weeks.

 Wow, Lindsay... straigt from USO final! I hope Alicia gets further in this draw then her USO draw!

Last year Svetlana flew from New York right after the USO final and won the Wismilak title and she even made it to the doubles final.

Lindsay? She can make it too, but ... she's not in the final yet. ;)

why is aranxta playing with sveta!!! weird.

Where have you been?

Arantxa has been mentoring Sveta for years. In 1999, Sveta came to Sanchez-Casal Academy in Bacelona, where she trained for years. Arantxa's brother, Emilio, is one of her coaches at the Academy. By suggesting her playing doubles with Arantxa, Emilio thought that Sveta's in-court game would improve.

Arantxa-Sveta played doubles at Wismilak International in 2002 and 2004.

Maybe she will choose european tournaments (she always can get a wild card in some), Serbia and Montenegro is much closer to Europe than to Asia

To be honest i wish Davenport didn't play in this tourny, it becomes too predictable as to who will win.

Sep 7th, 2005, 09:44 AM
Don't be so sure yet the Davenport is going to win this one. Fatique might come into play in this tournament, especially after a long and grinding Grand Slam. They're a few tough players i can see on the list as well, only one need to step up to beat Lindsay. Dulko and Schnyder have been in form lately as well, should be an interesting tournament... :) really looking forward...

Lindsay Davenport and her hubby are certainly coming and are sheduled to arrive in Bali on September 10, at 10.25 pm local time. By the time they are landed, they will get tight security escort on the way to Grand Hyatt Hotel, Nusa Dua.

Yes, this afternoon, the committee announced that Wynne Prakusya replaced Angie as WC in main draw. The committee is still waiting the confirmation from Kuznetsova.
Players already on side today are: Alicia Molik, Meghan Saughnessy (mispelling), Patty Schnyder, Sania Mirza, Fransisca Schiavone, Maria Elena Camerin, Rafael Font DeMora (who is this?), Mayumi Yamamoto, Cunnova Paolo (who is this?), Na Li, Ting Lee (wrong speling), dan Marta Fomachowska (wrong spelling).

I have translated this from website of this tourney...
