Is there like a rule that they could take only 7 out of the top 8 of the race and could give a wildcard to someone else?

Is there like a rule that they could take only 7 out of the top 8 of the race and could give a wildcard to someone else?

Yes. They MUST take the Top 7, and if they choose then they can replace the eight spot with a "WC" of their choosing.

they will choose ana ivanovic *fingers crossed*

I really don't like that rule. You have to earn your spot in the Championships and if you don't get into top 8 (even if it's because of injury or whatever) => try again next year!

Would be really not right for the one Top8-player who has to stay home!

Stop all of this BULL! Serena deserves the spot! Why, because in January of 2005, she WON A GRAND SLAM something Davenport and Pierce haven't done since 2000, something Mauresmo and Schnyder have never done. The top 7 definately deserve their place, but so does Serena. This is the YEAR-ENDING CHAMPIONSHIPS, the culmiantion of the year. Only the best are allowed to play. I can't remeber the last time where a slam winner didn't play the YEC (apart from injury). Besides, Serena was R-up last year. The WTA would be CRAZY not to give Serena the 8th spot...she's good for it!

See the 11 next to Serena's name? It means she has not earned a spot in the top 8.

Great that she has that nice cushion over Schynder

A good showing in Moscow and Zurich should
sew it up for Venus no doubt even though she's

Schnyder lost to Likhovtseva today.

-With a SF in Moscow, Elena D can get to just 16 points behind her. (if she beats Myskina in the QF)
-Petrova can get to about the same place with a win in Bangkok.

This is getting very exciting!

The outlook for now:
-Schnyder can basically solidify her spot over the next few weeks with average results. A SF in Linz would make her very difficult for 2 players to catch.
-Dementieva can pass Venus with a SF in Linz, then it will just be a clawing and scratching race in Philadelphia for the spot.
-Nadia needs a F in Linz to keep pace, and then she's right in the hunt in Philadelphia too.

If Lena D and Nadia play in the SF of Linz, Lena can essentially eliminate Nadia with a win, and Nadia can put herself on equal footing with Venus and Lena with a win.

Gosh I wish Venus could have played Moscow or Zurich to secure a spot. I want Elena to make it, too, but obviously I want Venus to more. Although maybe it's still possible for both of them to make it.

I think it's important to remember that JH-H and Venus may not accept their spots in LA even if they qualify. Dementieva and Petrova might already have those spots sewed up in a way. (Even with Elena's bizarre loss in Linz. )

I might not even be surprised if the list started dipping down to Dechy & Myskina if injuries become a factor.

If Venus makes it unless she is injured
she will accept the spot.

An article has already confirmed
that she's playing Philly.

And she herself said she's in good health
and optimistic about her fitnes level and is
looking to play Philly and the YEC.

Venus Williams withdrew from the Advanta Championships yesterday as she continued recovering ... will take place next week at the Pavilion at Villanova, and will ...

unfortunately it's a subscription online paper and i can't be bothered to fill in the form to get to read the article.

PETROVA SCENARIOS:

-If Petrova loses her Semifinal tomorrow, she must beat Davenport in Philadelphia to move ahead of Venus.
-If Petrova wins her semifinal, but loses in the final, she can still pass Venus with a loss to Davenport, if and only if, the qualifiers she beats in the first two rounds are both ranked above 120.
-If Petrova wins Linz, she moves ahead of Venus.

-If Petrova loses her Semifinal, she will be 16 points behind Dementieva, and must gain that on her in Philadelphia.
-If Petrova wins her semifinal and loses in the final, to begin Philadelphia she will be 43 points ahead of Dementieva, so Dementieva must not gain that much on Petrova for Petrova to take the 8th spot.
-If Petrova wins the tournament, she will be 124/144 points ahead of Dementieva going into Philadelphia.

Henin-Hardenne has announced her season is over, and Venus has pulled out of Philadelphia. I think it's now safe to assume the 8 spots for the YEC are all but closed up. Davenport, Clijsters, Sharapova, Pierce, and Mauresmo will be joined by Schnyder, Dementieva and Petrova (no matter what transpires this week or next).

Of course, it'd make for a better tournament if the Williamses and JH-H were there, but, all in all, I'm looking forward to seeing Lindsay and Kim square off for the year-end #1 ranking.

i would prefer dementieva qualify as the 8th player

here is the scenario if they follow the last's year groups

1Davenport 3Sharapova 5Mauresmo(maybe) 7Petrova

2Clijsters 4Pierce(maybe) 6Schnyder 8Dementieva

the 2nd one seems a littlle bit lighter..but im not sure about momo and mary yet..they might swap after philly

what's the source of this?

Ok, maybe I'm jumping the gun, but according to her own website, JH-H doesn't seem so confident of her participation in the YEC. Her injury is more serious than she thought, and (given what she says on the site) I find it incredibly hard to believe that she'd risk any further aggravation to it.

Plus, she doesn't need to defend any points there, and I'm thinking she might be aware that a better strategy is simply to lay low and wait for the AO.

(Sorry if I was talking out of turn. :tape: )

If Petrova loses in the final (again), there are now only 2 qualifiers left in the qualifying draw in Philly (foretz and sromova) that could give Petrova enough quality points that she could still pass Venus without beating Lindsay. So they both must qualify, be drawn to meet Petrova, and one must be Shvedova.

So basically, Petrova REALLY needs to win tomorrow to have a shot at this.

If my calculations are right, she would tie with Venus by beating Foretz/Sromova and a lower-ranked player.

From WTA rules:

If two or more players have the same number of Ranking Points, the player who has played the most WTA Tour Tournaments during the Tour Year will be given priority.

So Nadia would be ahead of Venus. :)

I thought the 1st tie break is quality pts, then the # of tournaments...
It seems WTA will do everything to reward players who are "loyal" to the tour and play as many tournaments as they can endure...

It seems WTA will do everything to reward players who are "loyal" to the tour and play as many tournaments as they can endure...

but i'm not sure it's a good idea !

I'm sure that everyone in LA (and a large part of the world) prefers to see Venus ... even if Petrova is a kind player, she's not really charismatic and has not "handsome" win in her career ! She's not as famous as Venus so i'm sure LA organisation prefers Venus to be qualified and Petrova to stay at home !

Then, I think it's not really a good choice for the WTA tour to choose the players who played the most tournaments !
By playing 25 tournaments in a year, petrova is not able to have enought points to be ahead of Venus, and that's a proof that venus is a better player i think ...
So what's the aim of the YEC ? To see players who played the most with regular results, or to see players who are clearly the bests ?
So i think when two players gained the same number of points, the girl who played the most should be BEHIND the other one who seems to be better on court !

It's just my opinion, i easily understand that the WTA tour wants to give an advantage to girls who play week after week ...

That's only right for the YEC... in the entry ranking, players can count only a limited amount of tournaments (17 for singles, 11 for doubles) in their ranking points... and I'm quite sure quality points (which are going out of the system next year anyway) is the 1st tie-break in the entry system... so what's the wisdom to give the players who play more tournaments the priority in the YEC and not in regular tournaments?

Dementieva has to overtake Petrova (not Venus) to qualify for YEC, and she needs 145 pts more than Petrova to make it.
She has to get at least to the final, because Schnyder withdrew and the highest-ranked players she can play to get to the semi are Diaz-Oliva and Zvonareva.

Bottom Line:
If Lena D makes a Semifinal, she will pass Venus.

She is 98 points behind. A semifinal gives 88 round points + beating Bachmann for 2 quality points, so she would need 9 quality points from her QF win to pass Venus. The fewest she can get is Craybas (#48) who would give her 10 quality points.
