Wild card Mirjana Lucic took another step in her comeback after nearly four years away from the game due to personal and financial problems. The German-born Croatian earned a 6-4, 7-6 (4) win over Lindsey Nelson of the United States in a first-round match on stadium court.

Lucic, a few days shy of her 25th birthday, said she never doubted that she would return as a great player, but financial difficulties prevented her from hiring a coach and doing the necessary traveling.

Now she plans to "just play from tournament to tournament and play as many matches as I can. Right now, I feel like I just won a Grand Slam. Right now, every match is huge for me."

The 6-foot Lucic, who said she still plays the same "strong, aggressive, powerful" game she did before her hiatus, will face No 8-seeded Anna Chakvetadze in the second round.

Lucic returns to winning ways

Croatia's Mirjana Lucic has set her sights on a productive return to the game after off-court issues forced her on to the sidelines for four years.

Lucic - who fled to the United States after being abused by her father - wrestled with financial problems before ending her long layoff at the Memphis Open last month.

"I've been at home, missing tennis a lot and spending time with my family," Lucic said after beating American Lindsey Nelson 6-4 7-6 in the Pacific Life Open first round.

"My family is everything to me. I have cried more days than you can imagine and got amazing help from my family. They tried to keep me busy through the French Open and Wimbledon and so on.

"This is no experiment," the 24-year-old added with fire in her eyes.

"In my head, I really never left. I'm absolutely back in the game after an incredibly difficult time. God willing, I will be better than ever."

Germany-born Lucic - who stunned the tennis world by reaching the Wimbledon semi-finals in 1999 before losing to her idol Steffi Graf - did not want to discuss her financial concerns.

"Not right now," she said.

"Until everything is solved, I want to focus on the game.

"I have no relationship with my father now. I got a new coach two and a half months ago and I've been training with my brothers."

Asked whether she had sufficient financial backing to compete regularly on the 2007 WTA Tour, she replied: "I'm not at that point yet but I feel very positive about it."

A gifted player as a teenager who won the 1996 junior US Open singles and the 1997 junior Australian Open singles and doubles titles, Lucic is delighted to be back at Indian Wells.

"It's four years, I believe, since I've been here and this is one of my favourite events," said the Croatian, who at 16 became the youngest player to complete a successful defence of a WTA Tour title at the 1998 Bol.

"I'm really, really excited. It feels like my soul is here. I'm completely at peace and at ease here. I just love this place."

Lucic accepts she will have to rely on several wildcard entries into WTA tournaments this season.

"For this year, my goal is to play from tournament to tournament," she said.

"Never before have I had a full year of, say, 20 tournaments. I want to play as many matches as I can for the next seven years."

Lucic faces eighth seed Anna Chakvetadze of Russia in the second round.

I thought she did just because she was wearing cap, top, skirt, and shoes all with Lotto logos.

Great fight Mirjana! This is very encouraging for rest of the year! I wonder if she even has a schedule!? It wouldn't be good at all if she would have long pause till the next tournament! All she needs are matches!
Please play as soon as you can and stay healthy, that's all you need!
Good luck!

Yesterday in "Večernji list" she said in an interview:
I'm still far away from my best game and form I would like to be in, but I'm making progress. I can't even imagine how I would play after 20 tournaments. Now my goal is to play at first next possible tournament, no matter what rang it is. I need as many matches as I can get...

That's all I know about her schedule!

indeed it would, but she shouldn't have that much trouble getting a wildcard somewhere in the next few weeks i wouldn't think. she's a big draw so you'd think the challengers especially would jump on the chance to have her. she's just got to apply for them. but don't forget she was sick in memphis and sick again in IW so she might take a couple of weeks break to try and get better.

The Dothan, Alabama $75K is not till the week of 16 April.

There are two other events, both strong $25K's, in that region (Pelham, Alabama and Jackson, Mississippi) in the 2 weeks before that. It'll be very disappointing if she doesn't play SOMEWHERE during those weeks. There's no harm in getting on their entry lists; she could always withdraw if she ends up receiving any WTA wild cards in those weeks.

She's not on the Pelham entry list right now. Jackson and Dothan don't have lists up yet.

Side note: Dothan has changed to a clay court event now -- it used to be hard court. So it's a much better tune-up for the clay season now than it was before.

Mirjana said she wants to play tournaments at any level; well here are 3 in a row, not that far from Florida: Pelham, Jackson and Dothan. So why not sign up for them while waiting to see if some WTA wc's will come through? At least she'd be playing, and she'd quickly get a WTA ranking, which will be at least around 500, and she could build from there.

We'll just have to wait and see what she does.

Translation!

9 years passed since mysterious disappearance of Mirjana Lucic from Croatia. Running away from violent father she started new life in USA and slightly sinked to oblivion.

Mirjana: It was awful for me, my father beat me constantly, almost every day. Days when everything was all right were rare. During Wimbledon 98' everything fell apart, I couldn't bear a single day of his beatings anymore and living so stressfuly. Nothing was worth living that way!

Family drama quickly reflected itself on her results. Long time she was just making appearances in tournaments and then she stopped doing that.
2 weeks ago she appeared from nowhere in Indian Wells and won first round match.

Mirjana:I feel awesome. I had a big break, didn't play for three and half years, so it was an unbelievable feeling to be on the coart again, especially in Indian wells because I played on central court and the feeling was indescribable. I am very happy, especially because I managed to win first matches in both tournaments I played.

Today her biggest problems are finances and because of it she couldn't travell to tournaments in last two years. She confesses that she was depressed back then and had to take antidepressives against her will.

Mirjana:I had to do it because of my health and because of all the things I've been through.Back then I had unbelievably stressfull life. My father and others threatened that they will kidnap my brothers, younger sister and me, that they will kill us and things like that. So we lived constantly with stress.

During last year she lost 20kg, now she trains very hard and wants to play top tennis tournaments again.
She wasn't in Croatia since the escape, misses old friends and family.

Mirjana:That is my dearest wish and it's also my plan, not just a wish. When I feel that I'm safe, that I can safely enter Croatia and safely go back, I will absolutely take first flight till there. But I'm still afraid, I still recieve threats and I don't feel safe at all.

With coach Ivan Beroš she has ambicious goal to come back to top 100.
As Goran Ivanišević said: "Everything's possible, but she will need help from heaven, Mikica deserved it!"

Sorry for bad English, I waited for somebody else to translate it, but since nobody did!:o

Maybe some tournaments are scared to help her out, since she's in the act of suing IMG. IMG is very, very powerful in the tennis world, at least here in the US. :(

Still, she did get into those two WTA events -- just one more tournament director needs to help her out with a WC. Then even if nobody gives her wild cards she'll be able to enter challenger qualies on her ranking, and work her way up. Come on somebody, help her out. :o

Even in the worst case scenario, I bet someone's going to want her in those weeks with 10+ Challengers going on, like the wild week of May 7. We'll just have to wait and see.

IMG have been the subject of Police scrutiny following Mirjana's abuse. Its seems IMG have a shady side they do not want to become public knowledge. If Mirjana has been denied WC's, then the ITF should call that into question. But they will not. Its all about money now :(

Mateša: Tražimo način da pomognemo Mirjani Lučić

Ponedjeljak, 16.04.2007., 14:16

President of the Croatian Olympic Comitee says they are willing to help Mirjana on her way back to professional tennis. He says he is in touch with her and also with Croatian tennis federation that could help her as well. He says she is still young and that she could play good tennis for several upcoming years. Then they mention reasons why she left to USA, her current financial problems and her comeback at Indian Wells.

He says he is in touch with her and also with Croatian tennis federation that could help her as well. He says she is still young and that she could play good tennis for several upcoming years. Then they mention reasons why she left to USA, her current financial problems and her comeback at Indian Wells.

The week of 7 May and again the week of 14 May, there are ITF tournaments in Florida: a $50K and a 25K.

The week of 7 May would be a perfect opportunity for Mirjana to play, because there's a HUGE number of challengers going on around the world that week. So the Florida tournament would surely be happy to attract such a good player to what will necessarily be a watered-down field, as the best challenger players have so many choices of where to play.

The week of 14 May also has that 75K in Croatia.

Of course I'm hoping Mirjana will play somewhere during April, and not wait for May. But if she doesn't, and if she doesn't end up playing in Florida or Croatia in early May, then I'm really going to be concerned. I still don't understand why she's not in Dothan this week, where they already know her, and where she could have picked up quite a few ranking points.

I realize I'm getting ahead of myself here, talking about events in May, but the fact is, I look at every entry list of $25K and above, and have not seen Mirjana's name on any list so far. And there are plenty of other unranked players on those entry lists for 7 May. :(

it's a very strong challenger but i hope she can play well
it's on red clay so that's a plus :D
hopefully this means that she will play a whole bunch of challengers in europe because she wouldn't travel to italy just to play one event and go home
and, most importantly...SHE WILL HAVE A RANKING. if she loses first round, it will be about 500, but hopefully she will do much better :p

Translation:

I won't play at Iva's tournament!

"We'll try to get her to play here but I don't want to go into details about it at the moment" said Iva Majoli few days ago. Iva is director of women's Unique Zagreb Open tournament taking place from 12. - 20.05.2007 at the courts of Mladost sport's park. However, it's obvious that Iva is satisfied with current players list so she forgot about Mirjana who didn't get any kind of invitation to play this 75K ITF Womens Circuit Tournament.
- I haven't seen or talk to Iva for 4 years at least, nobody contacted me about my possible arrival. I was surprised when Croatian journalists started calling me asking questions about my arrival to Iva's tournament. I'm definetly not playing this tournament!

Mirjana is hitting really good ans she seems confident
yesterday she hitted with Ferguson and Tony Roche was there and gave advices to Miki too
I spoke to Mirjana and Ana or a couple of hours in the afternoon and she is sweet and nice..very gentle and a very good girl.
We spoke of thousand thinghs but the most important is that she is happy to stay on the court and she can't wait to play
She asked for a Double wc too in Tiro a Volo but its very difficult to obtain one cause of the tons of italian girls around
She is happy because after Rome she will have a ranking and it will be easy to enter Itf tournaments.

Thats all for now I will report more tomorrow:wavey:

Just abck home
Miki played good. she have had many chances in the match...many close games in both set
Her game is a bit rusty but thats becuase of the lack of matches
She hitted some amazing shots and her serve was overall good
She was a bit sad at the end cause of the many opportunity
Knapp was impressed about Mikiza game cause she yelled many Com'on..unusal from Karin.

for any question I'm here

my guess is that she rushed a bit too much during the match. i feel like players who have taken a long time off from the game sometimes don't have enough confidence when it comes to match play and she might have been trying to end points too soon (which is bad on clay). the doubles score really encourages me though, because she faced a solid team and her partner really just isn't ready for that level of competition. hopefully she can get more wcs/use her ranking to play more events!

Gowza
May 10th, 2007, 02:03 AM
now that she has a ranking she should be playing week in and week out, and if she's willing to do that then there is no reason why she can't start winning matches like these and start reaching the higher levels of tennis again, probably just a matter of match practice.
