Lutz MD is out. In R1 Mirjana plays Jorgelina CRAVERO (#230). Coulda been better, coulda been worse.

Whoever wins will play the winner between Nicole Vaidisova (#4 seed) and Christina McHale (who beat Mirjana last week).

I can't see Mirjana getting very far in Lutz, unfortunately.

No, doesn't look too promising. :(

But I hope Mirjana will be boosted by her memory of having won 4 matches here last year. It's true that three of those were qualy matches, but still, that's a nice string of wins.

While it looks like Mirjana will never get back to her old form, I've been very impressed with her motivation and determination to play minor ITF events week after week.

Also I haven't given up on her as she's been making slow but steady progress in the rankings, roughly like this:

March 2008: 700s
April 2008: 600s
May 2008: 500s
July 2008: 400s
April 2009: 300s
November 2009: 260s
January 2010: 250s
February 2010: 240s

Next week--once Pelham results are counted--she'll move into the 230s, which will be her highest ranking since June 2003 (almost seven years ago!).

This week so far she has defended 8 out of 9 points so she'll at least stay where she is. Next week she's defending another 9 points so she'll need another first-round win. She has to defend quite a few more points the few weeks after that, but let's take it one step at a time...

The RG spot is so close now. A win tomorrow would be a huge step

Are you sure? Jackson results won't get counted until the week after next, and I believe the cutoff for RG entry lists will be based on next week's rankings, no?

Edit: This thread (http://www.tennisforum.com/showthread.php?t=406149) says that RG qualies entry list will be based on the May 3 rankings (three weeks before RG--I thought it was six weeks before, but I guess that's only for MD). In that case then, yes, Mirjana has an excellent chance. Go for it!

ajmo!

Mirjana has a chance but she needs to winn today and then defend this that 40 points in next 3 weeks. It's not that easy.

Apr 11th, 2010, 11:28 AM
Even if Mirjana does not make the French quallies, she can set herself up nicely for Wimbledon! Wimbledon is where she emerged, andn this could be a "full circle" moment for Miki,

For one thing, Hampton has never faced Mirjana, and Mirjana's game is a game that throws other players off at first encounter, because of her unusually early, on-the-rise approach.

Second, Mirjana has taken Steffi Graf to three sets at Wimbledon, in the semifinals. I have to believe that, today, some part of Mirjana's brain is saying a bit of the same thing, i.e. "I beat Monica Seles and made Steffi Graf sweat in the Wimbledon semis. I have the power to do that, if I want. Now, I face ... Jamie Hampton. I REALLY think I can make at least some little thing happen."

I'm not saying anything against Hampton (who has been aggressive in her wins), but Hampton has lost all her finals this year so far, and she is facing a very odd, very unique game in Miki's game.

Mirjana must simply go out and play with happiness, focus, and aggression, and a bit of freedom. Really, what has Miki to lose? I already guarantee that Mirjana has the game to WIN, if she lets herself be HERSELF.

Mirjana cannot be happy with second-best, here. She is ranked to win, she has the pedigree and talent to win ... she must find a gritty, determined WAY to win.

Mirjana can do it. ABSOLUTELY! She must grit her teeth and outhit, outsmart the 3-time final loser.

We shall see.

ajmo!
Apr 11th, 2010, 12:34 PM
If I have learned anything in this few Mirjana's year since she is back that's that you shouldn't have big expectations and every match is a new story. It all can turn around in a minute so we'll see. I wish her all the best but, honestly, I think nothing can suprise me with her anymore. Hampton is a favourite for me, she is playing great hole week and it's time for her to finally do well in finals. But on the other say it's time for Mirjana to take title after 12 years.
On the end tennis will give us all answers.
GL Mirjana! :D

I don't think they will be that weak, specially not Rome but the most importnat is now to defend last year point(anywhere)so that she can get into RG and Wimbledon qualies.
And maybe it would eb good to stay in States cause I'm sure Indian Harbour Beach and some tournaments like that will have weak field so Mirjana would have great chance for a lot of points.

For those who cannot see the live stream, Mirjana has just dug herself nicely out of trouble by winning the second set 6-2 against Osterloh, after losing the first 6-2. Miki really found the range on her forehand after the first few games of the second and cut down on her errors. She is clearly the more powerful player, but this match has shown what is so troublesome (and so brilliant) about her game. She has Top 50 strokes with a Top 300 mindset. The players are currently on heat-rule break, but if Miki can win this third set, it will be a big mental victory for her. She's never beaten Osterloh. Key: Her serve and her return of Osterloh's weak-but-steady serve. Miki has been erratic on both counts. If she plays her game, she can brush this girl aside, as she just did in the second set. More later.

Sorry--I was wrong, Mirjana now leads 2-0. She was the one who got the break. Sorry, fans!

Otserloh gets a break back, 1-2, due to some poor serving and loose forehands by Miki. Miki was up 30-0 in this game with two beautiful serves early on.

2-2 Osterloh ...Miki gives her the last two games with errors. Osterloh not doing anything special.

Miki 3-2, with some good serves, three forehand and one backhand winner. Very overpowering game--the kind she needs to play every time and win this set. She needs to simply stay in the point with Osterloh without pressing too much, then open up the court.
