Miki really needed a win like this. Sure she only beat a local WC, but it puts her back in winning mode, and that's important. To crush her opponent so thoroughly must have felt great to Miki after her disappointing loss to Brianti. Hope she can keep going like this for several more matches!

Honestly, if Mirjana can't start to beat this calibre of player on a regular basis, she's just gonna remain a perennial challenger player. I'm waiting for her to actually start having (semi) meaningful wins.

Wienerova will be a step up from her previous opponents, but still someone she should be able to handle.

Hello all from a new member (writing my very first post)!

Miki's got a really good draw in the first round which she should take advantage of, and achieve something she hasn't since the French Open 2002 - make four wins in a row. She didn't waste too much time/energy in the qualies, and her oponent is nowhere near her best (reaching just one 25k QF this season), so this is winnable. Of course, she shouldn't underestimate Gabba since she beat Castano this year and was a top200 player last year, but still... Great to see Miki commiting to doubles as well, although she and her partner don't have much of a draw, but at least she'll get some more match play. Good luck tomorrow!

Mirjana withdrew from the Zlin 75K qualy field today. Maybe she expects to still be in Rome, playing the final? Or maybe she received a WC for Barcelona or Birmingham? Could be any number of reasons. But I hope it's a WTA WC. :D

There is another posibility - phisical problems, hope that's not the reason.

Otherwise, I'd bet on a wild card, either for Birmingham or for the 25k in Italy (more likely). I know she's not on the list, but it's not impossible she applied for a wc anyway. There is also a 75k in France, but I'd be surprised if that's the one.

I think she hope to get into Birmingham qualies. But she shouldn't pulled out of Zlin. If she would reach SF in Rome she would get SE.
Anyway, I doubt she got WTA WC. I hope I am wrong..

Any live scores?

Lost 4:6, 6:7:sad:, still to play doubles later today.

Honestly I really don't know what to expect anymore. It's her 10th event of the year, half the season is gone and even after these points are added, she'll still be outside of top500.
She still hasn't beat anyone from the top200 all year long, which is something to worry about. Honestly, I'd be surprised if she would break into top300 by the end of the year.

Sorry, but "at least she's playing" doesen't do it for me - I'm still waiting for a real result from her, and this match was something she must've won.

Wish her all the best, but this is disappointing:sad:

Yes, but I don't think anyone expected that doubles match to end up diferently in the first place, so not much of a disappointment for me. It also shows that she's a much better doubles than singles player (after all, she was #19 in doubles and #32 in singles) which I often say on her blog, cause this was her first doubles match in 13 months and it ended up being a close battle against 2nd seeds. Also, with current singles form, I think playing doubles can only do her a lot of good.

Told you folks that's the one. Those wc's are becoming predictable. Hope she uses it better then some previous ones.
From what I see on the ITF website, line up there is quite weak, so could be a good chance - unless she bumps into Dokic again; and she's the 1st one out of MD right now.
Good luck!

Yes, so on the end it wasn't bad as we think. But I am still sad cause semis of 75K would be beag points form Miki and her rank would go around 400 and it would be easier to enter tournaments.

Yes, but as someone said the other day, if she'd like to be a top100 player again she must start beating players like Gabba on a regular basis; not to mention if she wants to get back where she once was, cause she won't get any points for "making it a close battle" or "almost winning".

I'm not critisising her doubles match, but her singles form needs some real and rapid improvement (just remember that last year she was #439 after just 4 events played and you'll see what I mean).

Did yiu ever seen her play since she is back?
I don't think so...Ok last year she earns big points in IW and Rome but this year she only played qualy in wta events and in both she played good.
I saw her matches in Florence and in Rome and she is in the right path as I said before. Against Gabba she was often 40 15 up or 15 40 on Gabba's serve. On tiebreak she was 53. In Florence against Doki she was 63 53 and 40 15...she lost yes..but this thinghs matters or not?
She needs to earn trust on her game and feeling less nervous but it could be a slow run. Every comeback is different...every player is different.

Hope grass brings some good news. Rodionova is crappy on grass (last year played just Wimbledon, losing in R1) so Miki's not without a chance, but she'll have to play best she can at this moment. It'll be even tougher cause it's her first grasscourt event since qualies of Wimbledon in 2003.

Great win for Miki over Rodionova!!! Now either Tanasugarn or Dubois. Another very tough test, but maybe that match won't be played until tomorrow, so the winner might be a little tired. Tammy is very tough on grass, but Miki is also a good grass court player, so hopefully she'll do well and make the MD!!!

A very valuable win. Her confidence must be in the clouds right now (just hope she doesen't get a rough landing:))! Whatever happens in the next match, this is a great result, especially considering how long she hasn't played on the surface and the oponent is a top100 player.

:woohoo: Fantastic win for Miki! Especially the way she bounced back after losing the first set in a tiebreak. Well done! :hatoff: Just what she needed to boost her confidence.

So glad this win happened in a WTA event and not another challenger; wins like this will bring Miki to the attention of other WTA tournament directors when it's time to hand out the WC's. Until she doesn't need them any more, later on this year. :D

Amazing article, one of many such written in the late 90's.

Anyway, great news about playing doubles - one more event and she'll have doubles ranking as well! BTW she plays Rodionova in doubles as well (teamed up with Koryttseva), but it'll be much tougher to win that one cause Miki's partner is just an average doubles player while Russians are both top50 in doubles.

And here's today's OOP for Miki's court:

Court 3 (start at 10:30 am):
Troicki vs. Wassen (ATP)
Stephanie Dubois vs. Tamarine Tanasugarn (first qualifying round, not before 12:00 pm)
Troicki or Wassen vs. Eichenberger or Vico (ATP)
Mirjana Lucic vs. Stephanie Dubois or Tamarine Tanasugarn (final qualifying round)

Miki would probably benefit from a 3-set Dubois-Tanasugarn match. Of course, her own level of play and focus will be a huge factor, regardless of the oponent. Hope she doesen't get overexcited after yesterdays triumph.

Sretno Miki!:bounce:
(that means good luck, for those who wonder...:))

Tammy just finished off Dubois 6-4 6-3, so Miki will play Tammy after the ATP match is over. It's going to be very tough, but hopefully she can do it! I think she'll need to start the match with better serving than she started yesterday's match with. Probably will need around 60-65% first serves in and really limit the double faults.

Lost 3:6, 6:4, 4:6:sad:

Still, a tough loss against Tanasugarn on grass isn't a bad result, especially after yesterdays win.

Her serve obviously needs more improvement, but things are looking quite good actually.

She's still to play doubles, maybe win a set there, or at least get some match play, and back to clay, probably to 25k Padova qualies on the week of 23rd.

Good luck Miki!:wavey:

tammy is one of the toughest grass court players out there. miki fought so well...she was down 3-6 0-4 and barely winning return points, most players would have given up. she also had a bp for 5-5 in the decider. best tournament so far in the comeback. hopefully it will give her some confidence so that she can play well in padova

Wow! Even though she lost, I think Miki has to be feeling a lot better about her tennis right now. I don't know why but I just feel like today's match may have been a fun one for her! Unfortunately she lost, but she battled very well -- and who could feel very bad losing to sweet Tammy T.? :hearts: I feel a lot more optimistic about Miki's comeback now than I did a week ago. :)

I hope she has a fun time in the doubles, and that she's also enjoying catching up with some old WTA friends.

A bit of statistics:

Miki's singles win/loss record by surface in '07 and '08

Green clay: '08 4-3 (in '07 didn't play on it)
Hardcourt: '07 2-2, '08 4-4. Total 6-6
Grass: '08 1-1 ('07 same as GC)
Clay: '07 1-2, '08 5-5. Total 6-7

So a tied w/l on HC and GR, a positive one on GC, and a negative one on CL - really looking forward to hardcourt tournaments. Hope Miki plays some indoor events this year too, she hasn't played any since '98 Tokyo, and the only other she's every played was '97 Moscow.

Anyway, I've analyzed her previous seasons a bit, and came to a conclusion that, not counting '97 and '98, she was always playing better in the second half of the season (starting with the French Open). Here are her w/l records by halfs of seasons:

'99: (1) 2-5 (2) 9-8
'00: (1) 1-8 (2) 4-6
'01: (1) 2-3 (2) 7-8
'02: (1) 1-7 (2) 12-6

Hope this continues in '08.

I think Mirjana seems to have the game still, it's just about applying it correctly and being prepared to battle it out. I think she probably wants to hit perfect, blistering winners against these challenger girls on every ball when probably it would take less to beat them. Anyway, I hope she perserveres this season and doesn't get too down on herself that success isn't instant.

Here's what Tammy said about the match ( according to JirobK ) :

"I played good in the 1st set, also beginning 2nd...i was lead again 4-1.
i dont know where she hitting came from...hit winner from every where...oh god. she hit so dame hard.
then,,so good that i early broke her in the 1st game in the 3rd"

Yes, but this year she's been more convincing on faster surfaces (including green clay), with wins over Tatishvili, Schultz and Rodionova as oposed to those over Wienerova or Cabeza Candela that were her biggest on clay.

I think most of us expected a bit better draw than Brianti, but after Tanasugarn last week, any draw here is OK:)

But I'm not happy with the OOP, cause I think Miki would be better of with playing today and having a rest tomorrow cause she only had to play 2 qualy matches. This way if she wants to get to the finals she has to play 2-1-5 (a free day between 2 qualy matches and 5 MD ones) instead of 3-1-4. Anyway, let's hope that won't cause too much problems.

She'll get 2 points for this, one for going through qualies, and one for a 1st round loss. Go to http://www.sonyericssonwtatour.com/2/rankings/singles_numeric.asp, click on "how the rankings work" and download the pdf - it's all there. Now she's at 31 points, so after Padova's counted in, it'll be 33 i.e. enough for something like #490.

Anyway, Brianti seems to be one of those cases where a certain player just doesen't suit another player's game. She's obviously more comfortable on clay than Miki and (I'm guessing) has patience to wait for mistakes. Let's hope they meet less often.

This also shows what a diference a surface makes - if it were grass...

(4) GAJDOSOVA, Jarmila SVK v BAI, Alison AUS
(WC) AVOLA, Marangela ITA v (WC) ANDERSON, Kelly RSA
PARRA SANTONJA, Arantxa ESP v LUCIC, Mirjana CRO
(WC) BURNETT, Nastassya ITA v (6) CRAVERO, Jorgelina ARG
don't quite know what to make of the draw. don't want to make any predictions cause they're always wrong :p

One needs to look beyond rankings to see if this is a good draw - and it's not. Parra-Santonja beat Benesova and Beygelzimer this year and took a set of Safarova. She didn't do much this season in terms of results, but a lot of it had to do with bad draws. I think Miki will need some luck AND a great game to win this one, cause her oponent is a former top50 player as well.

Definitely many easier matches in this draw than Parra Santonja, who has had bad luck with draws this year, as said in the post before. However, hopefully as it's a WTA event Miki will be inspired to turn in a good performance.
