Best thing that can be said is that she is certainly "getting there". Arvidsson is a Top 50 player and Miki took her to three sets and unquestionably could have won this match.

Worst thing that can be said is that she should have won this match.

She needs to start better. Broken to start in eacht set. :o But not too bad, all the best in Albuquerque!

I guess blowing the two break points at 2-3 may have deflated her. good fight to win the fist set though. Disapointed she lost, but in the big picture, she's still making strides.

Disappointing that she lost but a good win here at WTA level and competitive match with a top 50 player is valuable for her at this stage. Arvidsson didn't allow her to get away with the sloppy starts to each set and made her pay for not taking her chances. Hopefully Miki takes it all on board.

With (only) 30 points in back she's on a road to Albuquerque where winning (at least) the same is expected. Than if she does good I see noo reason why not to skip Las vegas and go to Europe for WTA events.

she should do well in New Mexico. She'll be around the 6th seed, and from scanning the entry list, I think she has beaten all the 1-5 seeds within the last year. Cirstea is the highest rank on the entry list, and Mirjana just beat her. The others are Lepchenko, Duque Marino, Krajicek and Tatishvili.

you're right, they'll probably use the post u.s. open rankings. The tentative entry list was done using pre-U.S. Open rankings. Either way she has a good record against the other seeds. Dangerous floaters are Alja Tomljanovic, Tamara Pazek and Michelle Larcher De Brito.

Mirjana :sad::hug:

IMO Mirjana should have tanked the first set at 0-4 or 2-5.
Then she would have saved energy and could have won like in R1 vs Cirstea.
Anyway Arvidsson was a dangerous opponent.

Unfortunately Mirjana often starts the matches slowly.
That`s something she can improve.

Better luck in 75k Albuquerque, Mirjana!;)

Upon reflection, I'm not so sure that Mikca should have won that match. I know she could have, but not so sure she should have. The only glimmer of "should" came in the two break point opps in set 3. But we don't know how those points played out and Arvidsson may have played lights-out on those points.

Another point is that Arvidsson is also very confident right now and just coming off her own leap back into the Top 50. Moreover, she played very fine tennis in this match, with a strong service percentage and, mentally, she was on her game, too.

All things considered, I think it is great that Miki took that first set, that she played so aggressively and kept her double-faults to a minimum, etc. Following her dogfight against Top 5 Jankovic, her blitz of Cirstea, and this close rumble with Arvidsson, Miki is playing Top 50-caliber tennis. If she thinks about Arvidsson's talent and the fact that Sofia is climbing back into the Top 50, she should be encouraged, because Sofia simply outplayed Miki by a hair today. This loss may not be as frustrating for her given all of this, and she can take some crucial positives from it.

Namely, she knows she can hang with anyone in the Top 50 and, on the given day, beat many of them.

IMO Mirjana should have tanked the first set at 0-4 or 2-5.
:weirdo: No offense, but this is a really foolish statement IMO.

What can we say after this. I agree that it's good to see Miki fighting close matches against solid players. It's also true that winning a match here is great and valuable for many reasons, not just points or money. But... At the end of the match Miki had like 35% of points won on 2nd serve, and that's too low to win against big girls. We saw against Jankovic too, that her second serve is just too weak to do much after it, so she relies largely upon her first. Yesterday her first serve was decent, I was even surprised by her percentage, but that second serve still needs a lot of work. Hope she improves it in the near future.

And speaking of time frames, it's interesting to note how busy Miki has been in the past 2 and a half years. This year, for example, is her second busiest since she came on tour in '96, cause she already played 56 matches and only last year she played more than that, with 68 (one of which was in doubles). Since the start of '08 she played almost half of the total number of singles matches played in her whole career, 170 out of 356. Her busiest doubles year is still 1998., when she played 22 doubles matches, which is a big chunk out of 55, the overall number that she played since becoming a pro. Only this year she played more singles matches than she played both, singles and doubles matches, in the whole period between '02 and '07.

All in all, hope she stays busy, cause that way the results will keep coming and improving:)

Nothing too exciting but a little insight into Mirjana's off court activities this week via Bethanie Mattek-Sands' blog :

Who is your favorite character on Family Guy? Ben, Australia
Hmmmm. That's a tough one between Stewie and Peter... Stewie's such a devious little dude but Peter's humor can just be flat out wrong, either way, it's hilarious! The other night at the player party Mirjana Lucic, Shenay Perry (http://www.sonyericssonwtatour.com/page/Player/Info/0,,12781~6356,00.html) and I were literally quoting scenes from Family Guy! Mikica on the list for Kansas City 50K in October. Looks like she is going to try for that Top 100 by hook or by crook, as they say.

A good strategy, since she can reap points without blowing too much of her money in Europe where our dollar is as weak as Obama. Plus, she can set herself up for a fine 2011, as we know. Getting direct entry into the Aussie, the French, and then Wimby (not to mention Indian Wells and assorted other WTAs) will vault her to where she ought to be, which I expect is somewhere around 50 in the world, or perhaps better.

Either way, if she plays like a demon down this last stretch of 2010, she will thank herself once the new year beckons.

hopefully she'll get a good draw for at least a QF/SF showing

I agree completely, but hopefully she'll win the entire event.

If she's yanking Jankovitches and angering Arvidssons, I expect victories in these Challengers! I mean, she would prefer the points she gets from winning the tourney to the points she gets from just "quartefinalling." Right?

In any case, she is apparently eager and serious about getting all the points she can get, because she is staying out West to catch these three Challengers (Albuquerque, Vegas, Kansas City) and I daresay she will add whatever else can be crammed-in before December, seeing as she will not likely get to Europe.

I am a bit surprised she did not hit Asia, where (given her strong form) she could make inroads and heftier points at WTA level, but this is smart, too, provided she is determined to go deep and win these sub-WTA events.

Another move up in the rankings this week for Ms Lucic: from 118 to 115. She's just three spots and 27 points behind Sprem as the top Croat.

She's not defending any points this week coming up, so let's hope she can move up another couple of spots after Albuquerque.

^^ That pretty much means that a QF here lands her the top spot among Croats, cause Ms. Sprem isn't playing this week (not defending either). Great for Miki, but I'm a bit bummed that our women's tennis isn't in a better state at the moment. We have no one in top100 after quite some time...

That's a really good point, and I wondered about this, too. We all know she is dramatic and rises to big occasions, big events.

But she is choosing these Challengers as opposed to a foray into Asia and Europe, and she is grouping them geographically (Albuquerque, Vegas, Kansas City), so her strategy is obvious: she wants to make the most of her travelling money, rack-up as many points as possible down the finish of 2010, and be sure to receive direct entry into the Australian Open to start her 2011 campaign properly.

I think we're going to see a very serious Miki these next two months. She knows how important it is to finish the year in or very near the Top 100. I mean, she's already "near" it, but with a final burst she could assure her spot in Oz and, thus, some of the big-ticket events like Indian Wells, Miami, etc. etc. etc. HUGE rankings possibilities for her for the entire 2011, and especially the first six months of it.

That being said, I would be thrilled to see her get a wild-card into at least one of the remaining WTA events. She had earned such a card, IMO.

This is an interesting draw from a Croatian point of view, with possible match-up with Pandzic in R2 and hopefully a clash with Tomljanovic in the semis! Pandzic really shouldn't pose a problem, not just because she's just coming back, but especially due to playing a double program for the whole past week. But let's take it a step at a time and see whom she gets in R1.

Good luck Miki:wavey:

McDowell played well in qually rounds, but mostly against unranked players, and Miki blitzed her in one of their 08 contests. Moreover, as someone already noted: this is Miki 2.0. She is light years ahead of the previous Miki in terms of form and match-confidence.

Based upon form, Mirjana should prove too strong. She knows full well she needs key points the rest of this year. These Challengers are not glam like the Open, but quite frankly, the facilities at Albuquerque and Vegas are really exclusive and high-end, and the setting in Albuquerque among the Sandia Mountains is gorgeous. Reminds me of Indian Wells. She ought to feel like a star at these boutique tourneys ... going in as a top seed. She's been handling pressure pretty well this year and, if she wins these events (I would hope she can win at least one, hopefully two, of them), she gets almost as many points as she got for her Open run.

These events can be brutal, usually because everyone is so young and desperate to make their way out of these events, somehow. But the atmosphere is different for Mirjana, now. She knows she has made it out, and can participate in WTA-level events, so Challengers give her useful incentive. She doesn't have to qualify, is highly seeded, and she has presently the ranking, strong form, and confidence to deal with any player in these draws.

She has to stay focused and keep her eyes on her Top 100 goal, of course, but boy, does she want it. She'll get some tough resistance, but better now when she's so strong than a few years ago when she was stuck in the mud and uncertain.

ajmo!
Sep 23rd, 2010, 05:38 PM
I think this is maybe even good cause Mirjana can be relaxed against these girls, she doesn't have to go after every shot, she can just go out there and play her tennis with no pressure. Maybe before sometimes she would burn out in matches on challengers cause she wanted to win so badly and now these matches are not as big and she can just go out there and have fun.
GL today

mikireturns
Sep 23rd, 2010, 06:10 PM
she can just go out there and play her tennis with no pressure.

I agree -- she has far less pressure, knowing she doesn't have to slog it out in these events regularly anymore. And she's walking out there with huge confidence, every time. These remaining 2010 events are full of gravy for her, plus she can save her travel money for Down Under in 2011.

I gather she will also enter Troy (AL), Grapevine (TX) and Phoenix (AZ). Good move. Gives her time to rest and then rack up the points. She had 108 to defend starting next week, so this first win alone in Albuquerque brings the tally down to 94 points needed before everything is pure bonus toward that year-end ranking tabulation and rising from her present ranking of 115-ish toward the Top 100. Every single match is like a prize, now, so these Challengers can be exciting for her, instead of drudgery. She'll need to go deep in all of these events, or ideally win a couple of them, which is certainly doable, given her form and trajectory.

But she needs to stay frosty and focused down the home stretch. I expect she certainly will stay hungry.

mikireturns
Sep 23rd, 2010, 06:21 PM
For the rest of this year, she basically needs to accumulate around 220 points to reach Top 100. If she does play six more Challengers (including this one), that is less than 40 points per event, and she'll be seeded to earn those point-levels at each. Can be accomplished.

ajmo!
Sep 23rd, 2010, 06:24 PM
Doubt she will play every week, that would be to much. And also don't think she has that many points to defend

mikireturns
Sep 23rd, 2010, 06:46 PM
No, she has 108 points to defend starting next week (semis of Vegas, final of Puerto Rico, etc.). Thus, if she wants to merely stay at her current ranking of around 115 at year's end, she must defend at least those 108 points. If she wants to be in the Top 100 by end of year, then she must defend the 108 points and add around 115 additional points due to her efforts. Basically she needs to rack-up 220 points total to be just inside or at Top 100before December 31. She would have a couple weeks break before the late October-November Challengers.

That would be like getting to a mix of quarters and/or semis of 6 Challenger events (including this one), or ideally winning one of them and getting to the semis of two or three more, etc. If she could win two, that would be sweet. She has the game for it now.

She wants to be DA for Oz, and I think it's worth it to give it this final push for the year. Plenty of down time between groups of events.

SERVivor
Sep 23rd, 2010, 07:22 PM
I think she can defend her points from last year, but it will be difficult to reach the top 100 goal in my opinion. That's alot of tennis to be played and she's already played over 55 matches so far this season. One way I can see her doing it, is if she wins the tournament this week. If she doesn't she would proably have to play a few challengers in late November, early December, but if she stops playing in early November, which is customary for top players, I don't think she'll make it.

congrats for being #1 croat, Miki
we know you're always the best anyway ;)

Not so fast. In this week's rankings, Mirjana was 27 points behind Sprem. She has picked up 30 points so far in Albuquerque but she loses 8 from her 17th best result. That means she's still 5 points behind. One more win, though, and she'll make it.

Woerle is certainly beatable. In the past month she got destroyed by Falconi 4-6 1-6 and by Karatentcheva 0-6 3-6. If Mirjana's game is on, she will advance. (Let's hope it's on!)

Another straight set win. Very good for the confidence, on top of the confidence she has already got from the past exciting few months (beating Top 100 players on big stages, taking sets from Top 5, nearly beating Top 50). Hey, she had better be confident. With her game on form the way it has been all summer, and with her new "I'm back" feeling, I should hope she's entering these Challenger events to do some damage. I don't think Top 100 is out of question for her by year's end, given the state of her game.

Last year this time she played six challengers (I'm pretty sure) to finish the year -- lesser ones. She can conceivably make 220 points between now and November 30.

Today's was Mirjana's 40th match win of the year (against only 18 losses). Congratulations, Mirjana--very impressive!

That compares to 40-27 in 2009; 26-21 in 2008; and 7-12 for the entire five-year period from 2003 to 2007. A clear improvement!

Finishing the year in the top 100 would be a crowning achievement for Mirjana's comeback. However, I think top 108 is more interesting, since that's what's needed to be practically guaranteed direct entry into the Australian Open MD. At that point, even if she lost in R1, she would walk away with ~$20,000, which would give her a nice financial cushion with which to kick off the year.

For top 108 I believe she needs another 145 or so points. It's very doable as long as she keeps playing the way she has been.

Nice result against Pandzic and I agree she has a realistic shot at beating Woerle who's far from her best (in terms of ranking, now 179, career-high 119). Surface will favor Miki, but Woerle too has some respectful wins on hardcourt this year, besides the two over A. Rodionova, she also beat Jurikova, Kustova, Tatishvili and even Jovanovski, so she can play well. But her more recent results really don't indicate a serious threat for Miki, so this is a nice chance to enlarge that point total for the week to 50 and justify her high seeding.

It's interesting to watch the players that Mirjana overtakes as she moves up in the rankings.

Last week she moved up three spots (118 to 115). She was overtaken by two players--Paszek and McHale--but she overtook five: Ferguson, Pivovarova, Llagostera Vives, De Los Rios and Czink. Not quite top-100 caliber, but Mirjana's getting there!

Miki in form. Focused. This is what comes from those close matches playing Jankovic, Arvidsson, and from her confidence. She's feeling in control, deservedly.

I've seen Lepchenko play a few times in person -- the last being against Voskoboeva in Indian Wells. She's a somewhat depressed, moody player. Not good energy out there. Hangs her head low, kind of mopey ... like the Morose Maleeva Sisters, if any of you young thangs remember them.

Varvara can certainly play, but only at one gear ... namely the gear that keeps her forever between 96-ish to 108-ish in the rankings. Her serve is nice and out-wide-lefty, but not too steady. She's not especially fast, but moves well side to side. She doesn't hit anywhere near as hard as Mirjana. When she's on she gets a lot of balls back and grinds with mid-heavy topspin, but she makes a lot of errors, too, because she doesn't hit full-on topspin. Gets sloppy at times. Her leftiness, I think, is what throws many players in her ranking vicinity off.

But Mirjana has the ability to hit through this, especially because Varvara can make errors and stop moving her feet. On form? Well, both are playing well, but we're really talking about two different game-levels, here. Miki will feel confident enough as it is, and Varvara will know that Mirjana has been speeding up the rankings. Miki has really enjoyed proving herself against players ranked higher than her, lately, and she dismissed Lepchenko last year when she had not nearly the form or confidence she now has.

One match at a time, though. One at a time. GL to Miss MikiLu

4 and 3 was a nice scoreline against Woerle, well done Miki!

Lepchenko will be tougher I suspect, just looking at her results these past few weeks is enough to tell you that. Her losses to Namigata and Hampton are the only really bad ones she had in the hardcourts this summer, with the wins over the likes of Rybarikova, Camerin and Kudryavtseva, and most of her losses coming from solid players (Safarova, Petrova, Niculescu, Amanmuradova...). At the start of the year she even got to wins against Hercog and Bacsinszky on the hardcourts of Sydney. Still, I think Miki can win this if she keeps her focus on the match and pressures her opponent properly.

Ajmo:bounce:

P. S. Lepchenko won her first match against Miki in '08 (Charleston q.) in three sets, but Miki was in the 400's back then and Varvara not far from where she is now.

I really hope Miki can keep going in this event all the way! Nice win in quarters, now take out Varvara in the semis! I think it would be a lot of pressure off of her if she gains the points from taking the title here, and then defending points in Vegas, Rock Hill and Bayamon won't be as stressful hopefully. I'd love to see her play one of the last few international events, but it seems that is not in the plans, and her scheduling so far seems to be working out just fine to continue to rise up the rankings. Honestly, just hoping she stays healthy and finishes the year in good form. Then it's all about the 2011 AO!!! Maybe she'll give Auckland another try too?

I think 2 years ago when she got Auckland WC tournament director gave her but Mirjana had to obligate she would play next year(even in qualies). They expected her to be higher in rankings but this year she was no high enough to play Auckland, so I guess she will start next year in Auckland and than probably(if she's gonna be directly in AOpen MD) Sydney qualies. But I do not know if this info is correct, I remember somebody posted something like that when she got that WC back in 2009.

Uh, YEAH! :D If she has the nerve to take a set from Jankovic on Louis Armstrong I hope she can handle Babs Lepchenko.

Seriously: she won't be going out there to play patty-cake. That being said, we are tennis fans, and moreover Miki fans. I know it is difficult for us to get used to her being on such a rise again, but she is on it. A truly meteoric rise since this late Spring. Think of how long Capriati sort of bummed around in 1996, 1997 and 1998 ... never gaining a whole lot of traction, even though she had tons of natural talent and LOADS of money.

Well, Miki has loads of natural talent and that talent (plus her knockout fitness) has taken her two seasons to gain traction because she did not have a regular coach and support system. The United Tennis Academy was the best choice she ever made. She's got traction now. Knocking at the door of the Top 100 and, believe me, this year it can be done. With four or five more events to play? Next year (especially the first six months) will be points HEAVEN for her big game, her big confidence, and her big AMBITION.

The ambition is crucial, which is why she is playing these events and working that skirt! But she is fighting to position herself for 2011 and Australia, and making one heck of a start. Why not?

Lepchenko was "beatable" last year when Miki was not the Miki we see now. She expects big things of herself. Let's do the same ... of course, without thinking too small or too big.

She has been methodical so far in Albuquerque. Game is ON. Head is ON. Confidence is ON. Let's see what she crafts today and beyond.

But it takes a few games to make your mind react to the different trajectory of shot, with a lefty. With a really good lefty, that ball comes at you like it's being shot out of a retarded cannon.

Just an excuse, really. The court speed was the excuse in Quebec. It seems like she may just start ridiculously slow for some matches and it takes her longer than normal to get her radar set. Such is the nature of tennis when you play as high-risk as Lucic I guess.

I'm not discounting the effect and awkwardness of playing a lefty, but it's more than that. Let's just hope she woke up in time today like she's been able to recently.

Just an excuse, really.

Yes, you are 100% correct, but that's the whole point of an excuse. It excuses. There are reasons, which become, sometimes, excuses. The validity of these excuses may be of greater or lesser value, but they are always there.

Explanations, excuses.

I do think, however, that court speed is hardly an issue, but with Mirjana's kind of "edge-of-the-knife" game, a savvy or different opponent can freak her out more effectively that, say, if she were just a retriever.

Mirjana's game is so based upon split-second timing and it is such a high-risk, almost neurotic game, and it is, yes, very one-dimensional. But she has proved this year that she has the head to adjust and think out there, too. Let's hope she does. No need for her to lose this match like a hack out there.

So, there's always an excuse. But some are more understandable than others, given the circs.

Holy crap. Thank heaven I have a glass of champagne in my hand. I wouldn't have made it without the bubbles ... or Brit.

So we have survived another one, friends.

Doesn't this qualify all of us for some, like, fucking astronaut mission to Mars, or something?

Doesn't it?

ajmo!
Sep 25th, 2010, 09:25 PM
it qualifies us for next dr. house patients and not mission to mars i guess, but as long as she's winning ;)

What a match!!! So happy she turned that around and is now in the finals! I think she'll have less trouble with LLW, but you never know! This is going to do wonders for her ranking too and also give her some much needed padding for the points that she needs to defend for the rest of the year. Onwards and upwards Miki!!!

OMG! I would rather go to Mars than be prodded by Dr. House!

This is, clearly, another bizarre twist in the Miki-Story. Our Girl. What can we say about her? I like croat123's comment, too: Best fighter on tour.

Most people would not know it, because so many of these fights have come in out of the way places, but she certainly has shown gusto, eh?

More to the point, I think she has shown the ability to "gather herself" and re-focus out there, mid-match, which is like frickin GOLD on the tour. Really, it is.

Mentally it is so so so so so hard - you all know that because you play. This game, even for a power-queen like Miki, is sooooooooooo mental.

Such an abrupt shift in match momentum is indicative of her trouble with Babs' leftiness or her over-eagerness. But her mind is so devoted and strong. She just would not LOSE, and that specific turnaround is the mark of a champion, and Miki has that talent. If she ever gets in a position to make another Slam semi ... these types of matches will change her world. They are so schizophrenic ... portending immense victory or immense failure, and she is "fixed" on the victory.

I have to hand it to her, she has made my year a happier year, just following her, and it is nice to know that we, her admirers/fans/supporters are a "select group".

Do I even dare join the circle to see her face the Lee-Waters Sasquatch tomorrow?

Miki is entered for $50K Troy Alabama event week of October 11th. She's likely to be the 2nd seed as well.

Lindsey Lee-Waters is a crafty player, but she is somewhat over-the-hill. Lucic should be able to take her out. Lepchenko was a tougher opponent.

If memory serves me good Mirjana def. Lindsay last year in Las Vegas QF. I'm not at computer to check but I think it was 7-6 6-3. Hope she can repeat it tomorrow(easier than against Varvara). GL :)

yes, she beat Waters in QF of Las Vegas last year. Look for her to do it again, but for a bigger prize.

I think Lindsay Lee Waters is brilliant. Two Ls and one W.

(Lethargic Lady Wipes-out)

Anyhow, just to get the usual Miki-gang in the mood, I thought I would risk incurring the wrath of our Most Beloved Britney Spears and hearken back to a tune of Power that supports Mirjana.

If you listen to the lyrics and turn your eyes away from the drowsy 1980s lesbians, you will hear endless cheers for Mirjana. Miki!

Oh Miki You're So Fine!

Yeah.

Nothing against lesbians. Love them! They practically uphold the tour. But Miki rocks like this old f#$%ed-up song.

Best to all ...

Congratulations! Time for another title I guess;)

Really great to see Miki fighting so hard, I hope it'll be at least a bit easier today. LLW doesen't really strike me as someone who could really endanger Miki here, cause eventhough her scores in Albaqureque seem very nice, none of her opponents were even top150. Heck, I can't even figure out how she got to these finals, cause just last month she got bageled by Pandzic in Vancouver 75k, and Pandzic took just 5 games from Miki this week. She also lost to Spears (not Britney...) in her last tournament, and got killed by the mighty and powerful superstar of tennis, Silvia Soler-Espinosa in the QR1 of USO.

All in all, a chance is here, now Miki just has to focus once more and take it!

Ajmo Miki:bounce:
