I said it before she was down match point the other day. It was the 2-5 changeover and I said.... This is what fairytales are made of....Lucic saves match point in first round of qualies and gets to semis of main draw. Obviously I didn't know she'd be down the match point in the next game (or the other 4 in the tiebreaker). I just thought that the story line would be more dramatic if she makes a real run in the MD after saving match point. Stranger things have happened.

She gets $19,000 for being in the 1st round. She won't get to keep the qualifying prize money since she has made it through, but she gets to keep the points earned.

Yeah, my sorry browser got stuck. I hope she gets Oudin in rd. 1. She's very beatable right now, and in the U.S. the match would get alot of coverage because Oudin did so well last year at the Open.

I picked the Molik spot earlier if you read through the posts.

Molik is definitely winnable. She hasn't done much since May (only won one match and that was at Wimbledon). Now a second round with JJ would be most entertaining. I would pick Lucic to win that simply for the fact that Jelena has had a terrible summer with hardly any matches, and who knows what aches and pains she will bring into the Open for a change. I actually wouldn't be shocked if Jelena lost in the first round.

What a performance yesterday:hearts: I really didn't expect it to be so easy, it was so refreshing to see after all the drama in QR1. The draw placement is really good and I think she really has a shot at a win here. Before the qualies started, in another thread I said that I'd be happy with R2 from Miki and she could actually pull it off. Unfortunately, this match has about 0.0000001% chance of getting televised, but hopefully the one afterwards will get all the attention it deserves.

But let's not jump to conclusions, first things first, good luck against Molik:wavey:

It's a good draw placement for Mirjana but it's not guaranteed that she'll win. Molik, after all, was #8 in the world at one point. And, yes, she's in poor form, but players can come out of a slump at any moment.

Having said that, Mirjana likely comes in with much more confidence than Molik. Mirjana will have another significant advantage: having played three qualifying matches, she'll be much more familiar and comfortable with the conditions. That's a big part of the reason qualifiers win so many MD R1 matches.

Molik won their only previous meeting, 2 & 4 on the hardcourts of Los Angeles in 2001. Miki got one revenge on this USO already, now hoping for another:)

I like Alicia but I really hope Miki wins this and i think she can. Molik's still got a very useful serve even if it's not what it was when she was way up the rankings so Miki will need to take care of her own service games. I hope she doesn't spray te ball and remembers that Alicia isn't as quick as the girls she played in qualies so maybe has a little more margin for error.

All things considered, Molik is a mere shadow of the player she once was and will be coming into this event with confidence at a serious low. (Seeded third, she was beaten in the first round of the little Vancouver event by a girl ranked in the 880s). She was no great stunner at Wimbldeon, either, despite one win there.

I can't say with enough emphasis that, in 2001, Molik was on a high and Miki was on a serious downswing, distracted by family issues, etc. Miki has been playing more than well enough this summer to craft an "upset" over Alicia.

But, for those interested, our wonderful Miki got her first really noteworthy bit of big time press coverage in the USA, in the New York Times. It's a fine article and really worth reading because Miki has a chance to speak publicly about her "comeback" journey. It's for real ... she's back. Enjoy:

Another encouraging thing is that Mirjana doesn't play until Tuesday, which means she has today and tomorrow to rest and recover.

Still, let's not underestimate Molik. Besides, even if Mirjana loses, it won't be a disaster. She has already done more this week than many expected, and will walk away with $19K, 60 points and a ranking in the high 130s/low 140s.

I know this is terrible to admit, but I'm expecting her to beat Alicia. :shrug: In fact, I'll actually be a bit surprised if she loses...

Yeah, I agree this is a big chance for Miki to earn a lot of points, and she really shouldn't blow it. I also agree that it's not a complete disaster even if she doesen't make it, but if she wants that top50 ranking, she can't afford to lose to the likes of Molik in main draws of slams. I'm sure she'll be fired up as she always is for these events, cause this is where real tennis is being played and serious business done. A run here (or at any other slam) can turn around someone's life, and let's hope that'll happen for Miki:)

Simply amazing, huge congratulations are in order:bounce: Of course, I had to be one of those who at one point lost pretty much all hope of ever seeing her really back, but oh well, we can all be wrong sometimes:o Whatever happens next is just a bonus, I wish she would just come out in R2 and enjoy herself on the court, cause she really deserved it. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to follow livescore for this one (got a visit almost exactly at the time when the match started), but a win is all that matters right now. Really looking forward to the next round, and I don't even have to say how amazing an upset against someone like Jankovic would come as icing on the cake. Mirjana was twice in the third round in New York, and this is a slam where she was the most succesful in singles, after Wimbledon.

All in all, it's dificult to describe how important this win is. I hope she celebrates it properly and enjoys this success, cause she deserved it so much. And then in two days time back to business, hopefully with an equally good result.

Well, I called it days ago, before her placement in draw was set. After watching the Jankovic match, I honestly believe that Lucic has a real chance at a major upset. I am glad JJ pulled though because it will be much easier for someone like Mirjana to get fired up for a 10-top player than someone like Halep. I would think this match will get the Grandstand court and we all know that court has the recipe (and history) for upsets. This really could be Lucic's time.Unless JJ finds her form in the next two days, I pick Lucic in 2 close sets.

Hey guys! I'm at the USO this week and saw Miki's first round. She played so well and was so happy after her match. I went up to her afterwards and gave her a quick handshake/high five and told her congratulations. She is incredibly accessible and friendly to all the fans. I'll be at her 2nd round as well unless it gets scheduled as the night match for tomorrow. I'll try to write more when I get back home.

she had better statistics on the serve against molik. I guess this is because the fact that she is nervous...and as she said she needs more confidence. am glad to see that she is moving really really well around the court and is fit.
