You guys play competitive tennis, too. You know this freaky match is a huge mental boon for her. She'll swing freely against Zhang.

She is high on life right now, and this was such a key win. This is mental gravy for her.

First let me just say that I'm very grateful for not being able to follow live scores yesterday, even reading the follow-up on this forum was enough for a migraine.

What else to say...QR1, she barely got through against #219, saved a million match points...this is not looking good. For any serious damage in MD she'll have to raise her level by a whole lot. I know the reason might be her "lack of interest" or "hard time motivating against weaker opponents", but she needs to stop wasting so much energy in the earliest of rounds.

Zhang will be tough, maybe not as tough as Dzehalevich (regardless of what ranking says), but she had her share of decent hardcourt results this past Spring, with 2 consecutive finals on American 25k's, one of which she won.

All in all, I'm not optimistic about the rest of the tournament, Mirjana seems rusty and out of focus, but I wish her all the best anyway. Hoping for some more positive posts after the match(es) to come:wavey:

..She strikes the ball so well. Its beautiful to watch.
..there were people fighting for seats and just standing room to see the end of the match.
..she got such a loud applause.
..She was so pumped and the crowd was going crazy.
..and the entire crowd got to their feet for it.
..Lucic yelled out ajmo and was beaming from ear to ear. The entire crowd was on their feet and I got chills because everyone was so behind her and you could just tell she was loving it and taking it all in.
..She was mobbed by fans and seemed to be signing and talking to as many as she could.
..It was so inspiring.

This sound like quite a show!! :inlove:

I returned to Washington, D.C. very late last night, so didn't have time to post until now. That linked post sums up the event pretty well. After watching my other favorite Marta Domachowska lose to the steady Evegeni Rondina, I hurried over to court 14 for Mirjana's match. I arrived at 2-1 (0-40) and immediately Mirjana lost the three break points and (I'll just call her) 'Vich held for 3-3. I didn't write any notes so it is hard to remember alot of specifs. I sat to the right of her coach. To his right was a hot chick. Maybe it was his girlfriend. To her right was a couple, one Croatian and his american girlfrien, then me. There were various press people who would come and go, as they were covering more than one match at a time. I was litteraly about 20 feet from court, parallel to the service line, so when Mirjana played on my side, she was close. At one point in the first set, she shaked a return of serve and with my no longer as sharp as they used to be reflexes, the ball whizzed by me. The ball girl looked frantically over the fench for someone to throw it back, like she had lost some prize.
The rest of the first set was pretty even, until Lucic broke near the end of the set to win 7-5. In the first set, 'Vich played a pretty traditional game. She did slice alot, but didn't try the defensive tactics that she first employed in the second set, and which turned the match around, and almost won it for her. She started hitting crazy moomballs, that cleared the net by about 10-15 feet (I am not exagerating). She mixed these with slices and other short balls. A pattern developed whereby Miki would be forced in to put away short balls, and would often overhit and make unforced errors. The moonballs were extremely effective in throwing off Miki's timing. She would backup and wait for the ball, which almost always landed deep in the middle of the court, so she had no pace or angle to work with to unleash her power. One fan in front of me kept saying, and he may have had a point, that Lucic should move in a little and take those moonballs in the air. This may have worked some, but then she would have gottern lobbed over her head or would have had to hit alot of tricky overheads. Anyway, the defensive tactics of "Vich were highly sucessful and she won the second set 6-3.
Miki walked right past me as she headed for a bathroom break at the end of the seond set. I should have said something encouraging, but I wimped out and just watched her walk by. She looke fery striking and graceful and is definately six feet tall.
The third set started off like the second ended, with 'Vich frustrating Miki with her defense. Soon it was 3-0 and I admit I thought she may be done. A guy in front of me cheered lustily for 'Vich raving over her "street tough tennis." I just rolled my eyes. But he had a point, Brad Gilbert's "Winning Ugly" was in full force here. Miki was having trouble returing 'Vich's extremely weak second serves, which were in the neighborhood of 60 mph. She continually overhit these second serves an lost alot of these points without getting the return in the court. I dropped my head at these instances. Miki held for 3-1, but 'Vich held for 4-1. Miki held and then dropped a game on 'Vich's serve. At the end of the game, Miki threw her racket at the net in disgust after netting a pretty easy vollye. It was 2-5 and just one break down, but, again I had a feeling it was over for Miki, because she couldn't change the pattern of play that had been going on since midway through the second set.
Then, the comeback ensued. She served solidly at 2-5 to win that game. Importantly, her core group of coach and croatian fans yelled loudly whenever she won a point. I clapped loudly at each poin she won, as well. I yelled out "yea" as well. I made sure the 'Vich fan in front of me heard me loud and clear. Suddenly, at 3-5, Miki started getting all her returns of serve in play. This was essential, beause once a point started, she had the advantage. She cut down her unforced errors and ran 'Vich around the court. When she broke, a roar went out and now I had a feeling she could win. After all the excitement of the crowd, I realized Miki still had to serve to stay in the match. It was 4-5. She continued the pattern of play she had established at 3-5 until the tiebreak. At 0-3 in the tiebreak, she dug in and played great the rest of the tiebreak. It was an electrifying comeback, and I wish I could remember all the points in the tiebreak, but it's a blur.
At the end she was so happy. She walked over to our side of the court and said "Where's my coach. He left me? It was funny. Then she exited on the other side so I didn't see her again.
It was an awsome match, and I feel lucky to have witnessed such a close, dramatic match, and all of Miki's emotions being on full display. Yes, it could have been easier. But, 'Vich employed an annoying (to Miki and lovers of beautiful tennis) style that would frustrate any big hitter. Miki found the determination and patience to eventually get the Win and we can all be proud of her once gain.

I haven't seen Sesil play since her run at the French Open a few years ago, except I watched part of the live-stream of her vs. Justine Henin when Justine was just starting her comeback before the Australian Open. I can't really remember her style. What does she play like, isn't she rather inconsistent?

Sesil is super consistent, and an amazing mover especially on clay.
Good and powerful BH
Serve is below average
FH is the weakness, she takes it late and often only loops the ball

Aug 28th, 2010, 06:40 AM
Through today, Mirjana's W-L record this year, including ITF and qualies, is an impressive 35-16 (69%).

What's interesting is that she's doing quite a bit better in WTA/GS tournaments than in ITFs:
In ITF tournaments, including qualies, her W-L record is 17-10 (63%).
In WTA/GS tournaments, including qualies, it's 18-6 (75%).

What that tells me is she has been getting steadily better over the year (the ITF tournaments were all in January-May, the WTA/GS ones in June-August), that she gets more motivated at the bigger events, or both.

In WTA/GS main draws, she's 3-4, with wins over Duque-Marino, Sprem and Parmentier. Her losses have all been to top-35 players: Rezai (#21 at the time; in Birmingham), Azarenka (#11; Wimbledon), Errani (#34; Palermo) and Kirilenko (#27; Stanford).

ma re
Aug 28th, 2010, 08:40 AM
Yesterday's match seems to have been much better than the first one, and it was great to watch how that 2nd set went on. Zhang is a better player than Dzehalevich, so winning this in straights has even more value.

Miki now has a chance for a revenge for that loss to Sesil in the qualies of Palermo last year, which was a three set battle btw. Players that Karatantcheva beat this year on hardcourts (not counting USO) include Dzehalevich, Albanese, Bychkova, Doi, Rodina, Chan, Goerges...so it's safe to assume this'll be quite a task for Miki. But, what happens, happens, it's not a disaster if she loses to Sesil (also cause LL's often get a chance of MD in slams), but it's important she gives it her best.

The match is 2nd on court 8, where play starts at 3PM local, after Mayr and Camerin(:bigcry:) finish their match.

Ajmo Miki:bounce:
