Riske probably got the WC not only for her showing in Birmingham but because of a WC sharing prgram where the U.S. gives a wild card to a British player at the U.S. Open and the British give a WC to a U.S. player at Wimbledon. Still, she semi-earned it by beating Wickmeyer and getting to the semis at Birmingham. Dokic and Lucic are to former semi-finalists who were probably not considered too much because of age. Dokic is the highest ranked of the three but her from lately has not been good. Lucic has actually been in better form than Dokic. Anyway, I think Mirjana is in good enough form to qualify no matter who she faces in the qualifying tournament.

SERVivor

Scanning the WC list, players that jump out as being in good form are Karanatcheva, Pivovara and Matek-Sands. Dokic is also competent on grass, of course. Anything can happen in qualifying and we'll just have to wait to see how it shakes out. There are always some surprises.

I'd like to see her avoid those four and Cavaday. I'd also love to see her get a claycourter for her opening round match :D

That reciprocal wild card thing was done once and it was years ago. GB doesn't do reciprocal wild cards anymore.

Good luck in qualies to Miki.

Very nice bump up in the rankings this week for Mirjana: up 14 spots, from 195 to 181. That's her highest ranking since around August 2001!

Just one win this week will push her at least into the 170s and very possibly into the 160s. Good luck, Mirjana!

Hoping for a fairly favorable draw, of course. With her fine showing last week (incl. respectable challenge to Rezai), I think she'll be confident enough to test herself against anyone in the quallies. Still, I, too, would like to see a helpless little clay-courter in her opening bracket.

Great news about the rankings spike. That is truly something, when we consider where she was last year at this stage, and that she has not been ranked this highly in nine years. That alone is a stunner.

Go Miki. You can do anything you set your heart to do.

I don't like the draw. Smith is used to grass. She def. Scheepers in Birmingham qualies. Also Mayr won a challenger last week and was in R2 in Wimbledon last year Krajicek's far best surface is grass( I think she even won WTA s'Hertogenvbosch).

obviously not ideal, but not terrible either. if she can't beat smith, she shouldn't be in the md anyways

MAJOR DRAW CHANGE COMING
Camerin is into the MD. This *should* mean:
Krajicek, as the 13th seed, will assume Camerin's place in the draw
Niculescu, as the highest ranked unseeded player, will take Krajicek's place in the draw

The outcome: Miki's draw just got A LOT easier

She won another match at Wimbledon, honestly, there were times I thought this will never happen again - congratulations! It was a really good win, looking at the live scores you could get a sense that Miki's game is solid and consistent. It's good that she didn't waste too much energy cause she'll sure need it later. Great win. I am amazed you get 40 points just for winning one round at GS qualifying. Now that she's done that, I think getting into the main draw is the most important thing. If she keeps winning throughout the year, points will take care of themselves. She is clearly at a high enough level to compete in the main draw at Wimbledon, she just has to win these two matches. If she stays focused she should be able to do it.

Shit on grass is the worst ... especially if you step in it.

Miki will have tough matches ahead and there's no doubt about it. Who will bring the most confidence and the most ideal grass-court strokes? That is the question. Miki can put her mind to doing that.

Time to give it everything she's got, plus more. She recently nipped at Rezai's heels on a day when she herself was tired and serving poorly because of being tired. I think she can dig her heels in here.

Whatever happens, this is another solid-looking move "forward" by Miki. Go, grrl. Who would have even pictured her here a year ago?

It might be too much to expect that Mirjana will qualify on her first trip back to Wimbledon. Of course, I would love it if it happens.

Short of that, winning her first match was the most important thing, since it gives her 40 points. That should lift her ranking by about 15 spots. That's not much if you're ranked #500, but within the top 200 it's a significant improvement.

In my mind she has already accomplished what she needed. Anything beyond that is a bonus.

Good luck, Mirjana--your fans are so happy for you!

I scanned Birnerova's 2010 record. She hasn't done too much, and the victory over Mayr was her first match on grass this year. She was ranked in the 50's in 2007 so she has experience. It should be a good match but on form I'd expedt Lucic to win.

SERVivor
Jun 15th, 2010, 09:08 PM
Looking further back, Birnerova lost to Venus Williams 6-2 6-4 as a lucky loser in round 1 of the 2005 Wimbledon. In 2006, she lost in 2nd round, after beating Arvidsson in round 1. In 2007 she lost in the first round. She was injured for almost a year in mid 2008-early 2009, so she's still building back up.

Match report from Aceman at GBtennisgirls.

Anna Smith vs Mirjana Lucic

Wow - Anna has improved massively since I last watched her. She has so much more pop on her strokes and her serve and her movement has also got much better. Completely understand why she's had such a successful year so far playing like this as before I'd always found her game a bit lightweight.

She came out steaming and if she had taken some of the opportunities she created for herself on the Lucic serve early on in the first set she might have sneaked it and the match could have been a different affair. As it was Lucic got better as the match went on and one lame service game from Anna saw her take the first set and then she was always in control. Anna fought the whole time and brilliantly turned defence into offence and the scoreline was unfair to her. She reminds me in her style of play of Katie and I see no reason why she can't keep building on this and break the top 200 and stay there.

Lucic looks really good and I predict that she can do some serious damage qualifying here and in the main draw.

As much as I adore Miki, realistcally speaking, I find it hard how anyone could say that it truly looked promising that she would be fighting to qualify for Slams around this time last year, as I said. That has nothing to do with "hoping" for Top 20 or other heights. It's always good to hope deep down and believe. I did think realistically Miki had the potential to get back to the Top 200 at some point, if she kept at it. Now, if we are talking about the Top 100, she could make a genuine living at the sport in the Top 100, so long as she played doubles as well. I think this is entirely realistic for Miki.

That being said, I think that Miki has the talent to get back to the Top 30 or 40, realistically speaking, at this point, and if she does, that would be a triumph beyond belief. Comeback player of the year, especially after what she has endured.

And, I don't care if Birnerova's fave surface is grass or marshmallow. She hasn't been strong a player in awhile, Miki is in better form, more confident and, though she will have to be very careful, I think she can make a match of it against Birnerova, for sure.

What's very cool is that Mirjana will be defending only 6 points until late September/early October. That gives her three months (including US Open qualies) to rack up the points and move up the rankings. If she stays healthy and doesn't go into a spell of bad form, she should easily break into the top 150 (she's only ~70 points away).

Beyond that she'll need to defend another 106 points until the end of the year, which is also doable.

Well, when it came to little Eva, it looks like Miki decided to just Burn-her-Over.

The match against Krajicek will be a battle royale. But Mirjana has been upsetting people all year; she just beat Sprem and was able to give Rezai something to think about. Every match has given Miki more confidence.

If she remembers that she is the more talented, experienced, confident player right now, she could certainly take it to Krajicek.

Take it to her Miki. Punch her. Kick her. Smack her. Spit at her.

^^Ummm,ok.......Anyway, really happy to see Miki take out Birnerova. She must be really excited and pumped to have a final match to make main draw. Krajicek seems to be playing better this week than in a long time and has a very strong serve so Miki will need to be focused on her own service games. Exciting times again for her.

Krajicek is the favorite on paper, of course, but then again most of Miki's opponents this year have been "favorites". She has shown us she's pretty match tough on grass this season and she is not going to give up out there. Why not? GO for it, Miki.

It's awesome that she even has the chance to go for it tomorrow. It's tennis, after all. Anyone can beat anyone, on the day.

she don't think she would qualify for an LL spot. from what i remember, the four highest ranked losers are put in a drawing for that spot.

from Shvedbarilescu:

There was so much tennis going on today so I wasn't able to watch all of this or yesterday's match. But I saw some of both. Mirjana is playing great. Just great. She really wants it really bad and you can feel her passion. Definately the most excited winner I have seen in the last couple of days too. As for her game she is hitting hard but doing it with discipline and she is quite capable of mixing in change up as well. The serve is a weapon too. Birnerova played very well too in the 2nd set which I saw most of and I was very relieved when Mirjana broke in the 11th game.

Krajicek will indeed be a step up but I am hopeful and think Mirjana has a good chance. This girl so deserves success and I'm starting to hope, and even think, that it is now on the way.

Oh, man--that bright smile is worth everything! I wish her the best of the most powerful good fortune tomorrow.

I know she can do it.

She has the talent.

She has upset bigger, better players (taking nothing from Michaella's talent by saying that).

She is match tough.

It will be a war, but all things are possible in tennis.

Miki, do the very best you can. That's what you have been doing, you're working so hard, and that is all you can ask of yourself. Your fans are behind you and sending you positive vibes.

So much heart she has displayed. I won't be at home to watch the livescore tomorrow, so I am just going to hope that Miki flies onward with her years of hard work, grit, passion, and leaps into the universe with all that power.

Just wanted to say good morning to everybody on this very special day. I call it a D-day for Croats at Wimbledon, cause both are facing tough challenges in the final quali round. Of course, I think this is much more important for Miki than for Ajla, considering where they are at their careers right now. For some reason, I'm confident Miki will qualify, this means too much to her to let it slip away. But also, I'm still nervous about the match and am really looking forward to it.

Will be watching livescores like a nervous wreck with my fingers crossed:)

mikireturns
Jun 17th, 2010, 08:54 AM
Yes, nerve-wracking, but when it comes down to it, Miki will have to lay her stuff down on the the line for posterity and I believe she is prepared to do that now.

Michaella Krjicaek is the 13th seed, but she is not the top seed. Nor is she someone to be dismissed, either. Miki will have to play hardball, which, if she really desires to make an impact on this tour, she must be prepared to do.

But Mirjana Lucic is extremely gifted, and she is in command of her powers right now. Let us see how it goes.

Personally, I would tell Miki to go out there and hurt her. Make her hurt. With the racquet, obviously. But hurt her. Do her best.Sorry, but as decent as Krajicek is, she does not have the talent of Lucic.

Mirjana was stopped by oppressive forces before her prime. Now she is rediscoverig that prime. The talent is still there. That talent never dies. Miki has brought it back.

Whatever, Miki ... I have to travel today and won't have livescores. All your great fans on this forum will be here sending AJMO! to you.

I didn't have to sit through livescores, it was over by the time I got home from work. I though Mirjana might win this through force of desire but didn't expect it to be so easy. Really excited about the main draw now. Good to see the name Miss M Lucic will appear on the drawsheet :hearts: I'm so pleased she played qualies now and wasn't given a main draw wild card, at least 60 points and some good money now.

I had to sneak away from a meeting to check because I just couldn't STAND it any longer, and I learn THIS!!!!!

Miki!

This is called redemption, friends. Yes, we all succeeded with her in a way. Those who have stood by her for over 2,000 messages on this thread and even longer than that, those of us who have been lucky enough to go and meet her and cheer her on at events, everyone who believed -- even in the rough days.

She crushed Krajicek. Miki wanted this. Boy, did she ever show how much she wanted this.

What a moral, actual, meaningful victory.

Wimbledon, guys. She's in it. On her own steam, no less. What in the world will we do whe the draw comes out?!!

I hope someone in the snotty tennis press damn well gives this story some coverage, because what she has done in the last three months is a BIG story that women's tennis needs. This girl also needs/deserves a sponsor or two.

I'm beyond thrilled. Image how Miki feels.

Put on your tiara, girl ... you're not going to Ft. Walton Beach, you're going to WIMBLEDON.

Poor Ajla got creamed, but her draw was hell (No. 1 seed Kanepi). The other girls fought hard in this round, which makes Miki's smack-down of Krjicek all the more impressive.

Significantly, Daniilidou qualified by winning 6-0 6-0 and over a week ago Miki just wiped the court with her.

The way Miki is feeling, if she paces herself, I really am stunned at what she might be able to do. One ting is for sure--she won't go to Wimbledon, after all this, and be "content" to lose in Round One.

Her muscles may be strained, but she has some rest and relaxation days.

Question: how much money did she earn by qualifying, and will the qualifying money be combined with Wimbledon money?

This is a big achievement for Lucic. We shouldn't let one person's negative opinion spoil the day. The bottom line is Lucic has done what she needed to do to position herself for the Wimbledon main draw. She beat the players she need to beat on a given day and we should now focus on the main draw. I, for one, look forward to tomorrow to see what she faces. On another note, here in the U.S., NBC sports, which will broadcast Wimbledon showed some of the Qualifying results during its U.S. Open Golf coverage this afternoon, Of the three women's matches whose results were given, one was Lucic-Krajicek. It appears NBC remembers her. The U.S. open Golf tournament gets big ratings, so it was good to have Lucic's name shown during the broadcast.

Actually, I wouldn't mind if she drew Serena. That way, I'd be guaranteed that the whole match would be televised here in the U.S. ESPN, Tennis Channel, etc. have a "love fest" when it comes to promoting the Williams sisters. With seven grass matches under her belt, Lucic would test Serena, who skipped the grass court warmups. I'm not going so far as to say Mirjana would beat Serena, but she would not be easy for Serena in Serena's first match on grass this year. Venus would probably be tougher than Serena because she always does well at Wimbledon.

Ajla and Mirjana had equally tough draws, on paper. Only a total Toilet Wand would nitpick about Mirjana's very challenging draw. Krajicek has a new coach and new "attitude" (just like Mirjana) and recently reunited with her family, giving her more stability and determination (good for her), and Miki still spanked her ass.

This is a Mirjana Lucic fan forum. Render back-handed compliments about her here at your own peril. Better yet, vanish ... just like Miki's qualifying opponents.

Ignore trolls, Miki lovers. Our wonderful girl has beaten all odds and qualified for the biggest, most prestigious tournament on earth, and she will walk into that facility next week and hold her head high as one of 128 women read to fight, ready to go lay it all on the line.

Miki rocks forever, as far as I am concerned. This is a happy day, and no troll is going to ruin it for Miki's fans.

I *desperately* want Mirjana to get a cakewalk first-round match. That one match is worth 100 points, which would be huge for her ranking. If she wins that, she would move up ~25-30 spots to ~135. It's amazing to think that just a year ago she was ranked almost in the 400s and just a few weeks ago she was still in the 200s. Things are definitely coming together for her nicely.

that's true. there's a big difference between being 165 and 135. 135 would probably guarantee her a seeding by the time the uso qualifying draw comes out...

Hoping she would get some easier opponent for first two rounds, beatable and then play some seed in third round on TV court!
Or am I dreaming too much?

Naaaah, you're being modest...

On a serious note, I agree that even gettting a high seed could be good for Mirjana, cause that would at least give her story some coverage and possibly give her a chance to play on the Center court again, which I'm sure she'd really love. I think the worst possible draw would be someone unseeded, but solid on grass - are there any such players in the field? Of course, getting an extra 100 points would be great too, but her making an upset over a seed on a big court would be even better:D

I wish we could all find a way to pitch-in and send her some roses:hatoff:

Miss Miki Lucic deserves them for her excellent efforts.

But her tournament is just beginning, and Miki is not finished yet. She is most honorably, deservedly, meritoriously playing as one of a select group of 128 women from across the entire globe at this year's All England Club (Wimmbledon, UK) and she is ready to THROW DOWN.

Almost got a heart attack a few moments ago, after going here:

No, that is just a list of the players who qualified for the Wimbledon main draw. No scheduled match between Lucic and Arn (though Mirjana would kick Arn's ass like she was kicking a tin can. Come to think of it, I think Miki is in shape to kick a great many asses right now).

Sweet Jesus, they'll kill eachother:lol: Just kidding, but can you imagine two players more passionate and emotional about their game. Not to mention they both hit the ball so hard...if I'd be watching from the stands I'd bring some protection:lol:

All in all, it should be a memorable experience for all of us (Miki included), it'll most probably get a tv court, and let's hope for Azarenka's mental breakdown during the match;)

only positive point is that the match will be most likely televised.
I was wishing she will draw GBR WC player :(

I watched Azarenka against Clijsters yesterday and she played so well! I don't see Miki is winning this one :( but until match is not finished I have a hope :sobbing:. Anyway, we should also look at positive side of the story, she qualified for grand slam, will rise in the ranks and first time in many years will play against top 20 player! That is great if we remeber that she in less than year played 25k qualies! All in all, I don't expect her to win any next match in Wimbledon, everything else here is bonus and I'm looking forward to next tournaments! :bounce:

The one good thing is that players that have a great tournament right before a grand slam often have a let down and lose in the first round of the major. It happens quite often. Let's hope it happens with Azarenka.

How interesting ... Azarenka. I'm not going to count Miki out, though. It's Wimbledon and some wild things happen at Grand Slams. We all know Miki is going to go out there with nothing to lose, now that she's gotten into the MD. She will have no nerves, after all of this qualification business, and will be very dangerous, I think.

But, aside from that, imagine how it will be when these two fabulously freaky drama queens start bashing each other.

Knock her lights out, Miki:devil:!

Honestly, I would be happier with Serena.
Cause she never plays good in 1st round and Miki would be playing on CC.
Also she got player in really great form cause Clijsters destroyed everyone and then lost in 2 sets to Azarenka. Surely Miki can beat her, but it's not likely.

Come on! Just a few days ago, most were saying she had no chance in hell against Krajicek, and Miki brushed her away.

I ABSOLUTELY believe Miki can beat Azarenka. Yes, I believe it.

Miki has got to believe it, too.

As far as likelihood, who cares? Miki is back at Wimbledon and she is in form and will be dangerous, and if Azarenka takes her lightly, then she is a fool.

Yes Yes Yes I believe Mirjana can beat her, if she plays her game and rises to the occasion, and, lately, Miki has been rising to some occasions. This is a big one.

If she once popped Monica Seles out of Wimbledon and nearly took down Graf on these courts, anything can happen. Doesn't matter that this was awhile ago--Mirjana has her head screwed on straight and is in form and she has the talent.

Whatever happens, I know she is going to play her heart out and I think we all believe I her, we are some of us just shy to say how much because so much key advancement has happened for her in a relatively short time these past few months.

But that is called "talent" and "finding her game" and, due to hard work and the right circumstances, Miki has found it.

I know with certainty that she can beat Azarenka. Will she? That, friends, is up to Miki. But she is not going to let anybody push her around, on court or off, anymore.

One thing many forget is that, once Miki finds her game, her rise up in form is amazing. I remember back in the late 90's, her rise from small events right up to big ones was astounding. It was amazing to watch how after she beat some unkonwn players, before you know it she was beating some really good ones. Why not believe that it could happen again. Schiavone showed the whole world what can you achieve if you believe and have an inspiration for great things. I believe anything is possible. Miki is clearly not a favorite on paper, but like someone said earlier, it happens often that players don't transfer their great pre-slam form to slams, and we've seen that with our players too sometimes (Cilic, Ancic...). Not to mention that Azarenka is a headcase and if you stay in the match long enough to get into her mind, you can do wonders. Let's hope Miki does that. From what I saw lately, she's not particularly good in rallies and you can attack her by hitting the sides. She can also be beaten by good net play, as well as getting herself to the net. Oh well, it's going to be an interesting match I'm sure.

BTW, as soon as any of you find out about any possible tv coverage anywhere in the world, write about it here ASAP!

Miki, if you happen to actually peruse your own fan forum, don't listen to some of your fans.

Another very astute and excellent point.

Let's not entirely count Miki out, guys. Yes, it will be tough, but Mirjana has her teeth into this now. Everyone is a "favorite" almost, against Miki, on paper. She barely made it here to begin with, in terms of the cut, but then she has shined and has demonstrated her powers most admirably.

All bets are off. Even the official Wimbledon 'blog' says it is likely going to be a "tough battle" for Azarenka.

I think Miki is dangerous in this main draw, for anybody, and with her current form, Azarenka had better damn well watch out.

Miki needs to take it from her. Just rip it from her. She may, who knows?

We'll know, in a matter of days.

I'm not saying she has NO chance, I'm just saying it's a crappy draw, and it is. Probably the in-form player on tour now who's ranked high enough to be really tough but ranked low enough not to make it onto the two main show courts. Crappy.

I don't give Mirjana much of a shot, but I'm not counting her out completely. I'm definitely sure she can at least make a match of it. In any case, it should be fun to watch, for sure. And this is already an amazing event for Mirjana regardless of what she does in the main draw, so it's not like she'll be feeling loads of pressure.
