that was awesome!!! she recovered from a total shit first set to play some very solid tennis. really picked up her serve in the third and those backhand winners in the last game were awesome :D:D
probably going to miss miki's match tomorrow, hope she can pull through!!

mikireturns
May 6th, 2010, 05:40 PM
Mirjana truly found her range and especially her serve on key points in set 3. I thought she might give it away, but she held her ground and hit some fine winners to take the third and notch her first win over Osterloh--a player who has troubled her for years. This is very encouraging to see her looking so fresh and eager, and can only build her confidence. Miki is proving a lot to herself with some nice play lately. A significant win. She had 8 forehand winners and 5 BH winners in the third set.

She's playing so well in patches but she needs to keep her serve percentage up and just eliminate a few silly errors. She's still impressing me though, she looks fabulous.

Yakimova's serve is really brutal, so that's a plus. No return errors, Miki. Ajmo!

mikireturns

This is so winnabe if Miki keeps herself remotely in check. Yakimova has trouble with her pace on the BH slice, but here goes Miki with another DF

mikireturns
May 7th, 2010, 07:48 PM
Mirjana needlessly DFs to give Yakimova the game, 0-2. 3 DFs in that game, with two deuces. She needs to play smart

mikireturns
May 7th, 2010, 07:52 PM
Miki breaks, 1-2 ... This match is so winnable if she keeps her head. Yakimova is not playing well at all.

For one thing, I have to admit Miki's attitude is far more refreshing these days. The viewer can tell that she really, really wans to be out there, she wants every point. Compared to the unworthy Alexandra Stevenson, who retired for the 1 millionth time in her career when she merely lost the first set and didn't want to play in the heat, Miki is indeed refreshing in her eagerness.

mikireturns
May 7th, 2010, 08:24 PM

Wasted opportunity for Miki on a couple of shots, but Yakimova is a good retriever. Hopefully, Miki will keep the pressure on. She really is superior to Yakimova.

mikireturns
May 7th, 2010, 08:33 PM
Ugh. 6-4 second set to Yakimova due to Miki's erratic play (but also to Yakimova's retrieving). Still, Miki need not have played so carelessly on her serve.

mikireturns
May 7th, 2010, 08:41 PM
Miki needs to win matches like this, against very beatable players, if she really wants to make her move. I have faith in her. She is match tough, confident, and should be able to pull this out by getting herself pumped up in the third. Yakimova looks tired.

mikireturns
May 7th, 2010, 09:31 PM
At least she went down fighting, but she beat herself today. Story of her career. This was winnable at all times for her. Yakimova retrieved well, but Miki played very mindlessly on her service games at crucial points. This was her match. Again, any player can look like a Top 50 player for one set. Miki did, and then looked like a Top 300 player in the last two. She needs to fix the first serve, if only to kick it in on crucial games when she's tired or in a crisis.

mikireturns
May 7th, 2010, 09:32 PM
I think Mirjana's focus needs to be on qualifying for the quallies of the US Open, and if she doesn't make a significant breakthrough this year, she needs to move on.

ajmo!
May 7th, 2010, 09:33 PM

May 7th, 2010, 09:36 PM
with a great result next week sh'll be in wimbledon and then everbody will see who has the game.
Plus she was so sad. You could hear her screaming on that last point. she knows, as well as we do that she is much better play than yakimova and that hurts. plus she's not even close to yakimova in rankings. hope she'll get where she belongs one day.

mikireturns
May 7th, 2010, 09:55 PM
That's not entirely fair; I follow Mirjana's results always. It simply makes sense that one would be more present when she's actually won a few matches an is deep into a tournament. I hope only the best for this great girl, who has indeed the game to be back in the Top 50. But facts need to be faced. She cannot lose matches like today and expect to make the kinds of strides she needs to regain her place while there is still time. That was her match and she lost it. I feel for her, but she needs to overcome the mental hiccups on her serve and keep pressing. Everything else she is doing right, it seems. Mirjana has had some nice wins this year, but needs to take it up a notch because she wants to be back in the mix at regular events. Then she can afford a good coach, some sponsors to make her life easier, and some money to give her peace of mind. I applaud her for doing as well as she has, given that she's got no money and little support. But she herself would tell you that she cannot just sit around waiting for people to hand her crucial matches. She must win them. So, think about this reasonable assessment before questioning my personal dedication to her success. I also hope she gains a berth in the quallies at Wimbledon, though I think she ought to save her money and travel instead to the US Open, where she has an almost guaranteed chance of making the quallies this year.

croat123
May 8th, 2010, 05:42 PM
i actually think there are a lot of positives from yesterday's match. she played a great first set and, but for terrible serving, was better off the ground than yakimova in the last two sets

ajmo!
May 8th, 2010, 05:51 PM
i agree, but it was important to win that match finally. and the chance she would get with win for wimbledon qualies. cause than she could go to europe to play birmingham, hertogenbosch/eastbourne qualies and wimbledon. i'm sure she would do something great on at least one of these tournaments cause with her style it would be hard to beat on grass.
and yes she played really great in 3rd set, but lost concentration on serve. 8 DFs in 3 games after holding to 0. it's so sad cause she is so much better than yakimova.
plus that unlucky point on mp. uhh..

wimbledon isn't out of the question. i think she could at least make another QF next week with the game she showed in IHB

ajmo!
May 8th, 2010, 06:03 PM
i think the q-list will be based on next weeks rankings. cause the one for roland garros was on the last weeks rankings. and monday will be 2 weeks from that, 2 weeks after rg is wimbledon. :(
i wouldn't like her to stay in states cause she did that last year and lost her form(got bageled by unranked girl).
on her place i would enter grado and try to play after grado rome(or nottingam, maribor is ok also) and then birmingham and hertogenbosch and if she doesn't make it to wimbledon qualies she could play strong challengers and later those WTA tournaments like she does every year(e.g. Palermo, Portorož)
mirjana if you have the money-please come to europe

Asia Muhammed (USA) v Alexandra Mueller (USA)

And as Siome reported(again :)) Mirjana plays Couts next.
Couts was losing lately but put up a good fight against Yakimova(36 46) and Rodionova(36 60 16). Also few weeks ago she defeated Rodina so this isn't gonna be easy. If I can remember well(cause ITF page is frozen) Mirjana played few times Couts last year. I remember she lost on hard in Toronto maybe 46 61 46, also earlier in the season Couts won one match 36 61 64 and one 61 61. If memory servs me good I think Mirjana won one match something like 63 64.

I see alot of similarities to the Jelena Dokic comeback. Both had overbearing eastern european (croation?) fathers. Both fell off the tennis map after doing well at Wimbledon very early in their careers. Dokic made a big run at the Australian open last year and briefly made it back to the top 50. Can Lucic do the same? Can't wait to find out.

I hadn't actively followed Mirjana for such a long time -- I was never really a fan as such -- but then came last week, I found a live stream for her match against Yakimova. I was blown away by what I saw... Mirjana has risen from the ashes. She was in great shape again, and more importantly she was also playing the type of tennis that should see her back into the Top 100. There's one big concern for me though, and it was the way in which she lost the match. She lost her composure after a disputed line call, and then she pretty much gave it away after that. That was disappointing to see. I'm not too sure she even knows just how good she is at the moment. Kudos to her and her camp for getting her this far back from the wilderness. It didn't happen overnight, and it couldn't have been easy. :yeah:

I also watched that livestream. Indeed, she appeared to be in great shape physically. Her groundstrokes were very powerful and her first serve, when it went in, was effective. She just needs to focus a little more mentally and stay more even keeled emotionally. The physical tools are there.

Mirjana is in better shape now than she was when she reached the Wimby semis, but the game has evolved and her hard hitting is now a normal style for so many players. That said, a bit of consistency and she could easily rise up the rankings very quickly or at minimum have a big result on the main tour. Hoping she beat Couts today!

This win certainly shows the grit and focus she was lacking in last week's Yakimova collapse. It sounds as if she found herself in similar peril and this time managed a way to tough it out. It will certainly give Mirjana a key confidence jolt, since Couts has so often given her trouble! Next up is Dubois, but they have never played and Mirjana does well against players who have never had a chance to get in her head. Also, it takes those who have never played Miki some time to get used to her game. Though the power game is indeed ubiquitous on the tour, very very few girls hit quite as uniquely early and on-the-rise as Mirjana, with those bombing flat strokes. Dubois has been playing well, but not exceptionally. If Mirjana stays focused, there is no reason she could not produce a convincing upset. Her game is clearly coming together. The 6-1 set today against Couts is a great example of what she can bring to the court when confident. Now, closing out a tight second set for a win will not seem so nerve-wracking for her. Great job today, Miki!

Dubois is going to be PUMPED, because she must have gotten the news from the French Tennis Federation that SHE will be replacing Kim Clijsters in the main draw at the French Open, seeing as Clijsters has officially announced her withdrawal. So, Dubois may play loose like this match is sheer practice, knowing she won't have to bother with qualifying in Paris, or she'll be so distracted by the good news that Miki may have an even better chance of knocking her off. Either way, congrats to DuBois. This still remains a great opportunity for Miki. Dubois will definitely be affected by the French Open main draw news, but in what way we do not know.

While it looks like Mirjana will never get back to her old form, I've been very impressed with her motivation and determination to play minor ITF events week after week.

Also I haven't given up on her as she's been making slow but steady progress in the rankings, roughly like this:

March 2008: 700s
April 2008: 600s
May 2008: 500s
July 2008: 400s
April 2009: 300s
November 2009: 260s
January 2010: 250s
February 2010: 240s

Next week--once Pelham results are counted--she'll move into the 230s, which will be her highest ranking since June 2003 (almost seven years ago!).

This week so far she has defended 8 out of 9 points so she'll at least stay where she is. Next week she's defending another 9 points so she'll need another first-round win. She has to defend quite a few more points the few weeks after that, but let's take it one step at a time...

Time to update Mirjana's rankings progress:

March 2008: 700s
April 2008: 600s
May 2008: 500s
July 2008: 400s
April 2009: 300s
November 2009: 260s
January 2010: 250s

As everyone here knows quite well, pro tennis at the Challenger Level is all about confidence--and who is going to get enough of it via regular wins to break out of the competitive quicksand, no matter how talented they are (or are not). Mirjana has always had significant natural talent: she proved that as a kid under incredible, relentless duress from the father, until that duress truly drove her from what should have been a Top 20 or even Top 10 career. The way she rose so well to big occasions (the Bol finals, the Graf matches, close match against Venus, the Seles win on the way to the Wimbledon semis) ... all of these things indicated her competitive desire and giftedness, long ago. When I saw her play in Ft. Walton in 09, you could tell that her self-belief was still quite iffy, but that the innate talent was still there. Ft. Walton was ~not~ a nice facility, so I could see why she sounded a little bit dejected when I talked to her, but a spark was there. Now, she's had some strong wins in the $50,000 events and confidence is what she needed most in her game. Pulling out these close sets against Couts yesterday and especially Dubois today tells me that she has made a new step mentally. Typically she would have folded and lost those sets (even if she had ended up winning the matches). With this increased confidence and stability and support, she could indeed break through at a WTA event this year. Momentum--it's all about momentum. Konta is a big hitter, but inexperienced, so I expect big-hitting Mirjana to thrive on the pace tomorrow and let her much greater clay-court movement play its role. Good luck, Muranna Ljubicic. (I SOOO hope that Radio Tennis announcer, Ken, is not calling the match tomorrow).

I agree, she's reached a new level just recently, not just in ranking terms but in terms of self-belief. And what's remarkable is that the excruciating meltdown against Yakimova has not derailed this progress at all. It's exciting to be witnessing this revival, even if overdue. I'm so proud of this kid for hanging in there all this time with so little to show for it -- until now. :worship:

MikeReturns - great analysis. You're right that it is self-belief i.e. mental strength that often determines how far a player advances, regardless of how talented the person is. I agree that Mirjana is starting to show more self-belief. I think she has shown determination throughout her comeback, but has added self-belief to the existing determination. If she had not been determined, she would have quit her comeback because the results were not there at first. I think she is finally starting to put it all together. The pysical talent is obvious, but you need the mental part to reach your full potential.

Well, one the one hand, reaching the semis is very good for her at this stage. Really nice wins for Miki these last two weeks, and this performance will see her move back into the Top 200 by the end of Wimbledon for sure. I assume she is going to play Carson and some other lead-up events, and hopefully Wimbledon quallies. Her performance this week should be good enough to just barely squeak her into the Wimby Qs.

I wish she would have shown more game against this total newcomer, today, but Miki ran into a hot young player with no nerves ... yet. I'm surprised she could not get a win like this on clay, but the opinion seems to be that Konta played "first-strike" tennis all the way, and this was a problem for Miki. Miki's biggest troubles have been her serve and her service returns. Both have been erratic, in general. She was not able to open up the court like this girl did, but she ought to be proud of her progress and must now focus on Carson and making travel money there, as well as getting some more wins to bump that ranking. Focus on waiting for the Wimbledon qually list and keep her momentum going to get herself back into the Top 200, because she is sure to get deep into the 200 if only she plays every Challenger event possible in the USA from now until the US Open. IN terms of accumulated points since the start of the year, Miki is ranked 150 in the world among all players, so I expect her to get there in regular rankings by the end of the summer, if not higher due to a really strong break-out performance, somewhere.

New opportunities for Miki will arise in the coming weeks and she will come away from this event with even more confidence that she can go deep into draws and that she is a player to be feared at these events. Then, when a main draw WTA wild card comes her way (hopefully this summer), she can possibly go all-out and make a breakthrough run. I believe she can do it, but she has to shore-up the remaining loose ends. She will. She just got beat by a young, more nerveless big-hitter today. It happens. But it can't happen too often.

Go Miki!

It's also great that her fans have some really encouraging things to talk about, too. It's been a long road for this courageous young woman. It can't be fun to slog through some of these backwater towns just to know that every girl is determined to do whatever she can on court to crush you. I think the level of dedication at the Challenger level is much beter than it is on the WTA, by the way. These girls can't afford to "retire" if they feel a bit faint during a match, so they really compete. Mirjana might have made strides this this one back in 07, but she did not have any support system or money to travel. Such a shame. Still, I think the fact that she held her ground and even came back to win an event, beat some quality nemeses, and prove herself as (at least) a Top 200 player again must be a great feeling for her. No matter what happens, she can look back and say, "I tried and gave it my all and broke through the Challenger quicksand to get back to Wimbledon." She can hold her head high from now on, no matter where she goes in life. That being said, ideally I'd like to see her grit her way into the Top 100. I think it is entirely possible--all she needs is continued deep runs at these 50k Challengers and one big breakthrough run at, say, a WTA Tier III or Tier IV Event. If she gets close to the Top 100 by this year's end, I think she can position herself to possibly target the Top 50 when she's 29 next year. I see no reason why she could not have another 7 years on tour if she gets close to the Top 100. Her body has not taken the beating that other girls' bodies has taken--girls who have been playing full schedules year-in, year-out. She's in shape. If she nears the Top 100 this year and also starts playing doubles (with a good partner), Miki could--with good strategizing and steady wins in singles and doubles--carve-out a rewarding career, after all. Jill Craybas did it, and she hasn't got Miki's talent. Others have as well. If you read this, Miki--go for it all; your fans always cheer you on.

Yeah, I believe that this is only start but also don't think she will play a lot of challengers this summer. I have a feeling she could try WTA qualies since she has no points to defend. And if she doesn't do good than she can go back to challegners to defend that points in October. On the other hand if she does good she'll get high in rankings and wont have to play challengers never again, if she doesn' want to. I have a feeling these challengers are killing her and I want here to finally plays some events where we are gonna have livescores or streams. If I was on her place I would travel to Europe(if she has the money) and try myself in Birmingham and Wimbledon qualies and than later Bastad, Palermo and Portorož. Than comeback to USA for some challengers or WTA events before US Open. I believe that if she would play these tournaments with a bit of luck after US Open she could get around 100-150 position.

I am also hoping she really psyches herself out to perform at her peak in England (and she MUST go!) but I also hope Miki enjoys the fruits of her labors while there, so to speak, because I was just looking at her listed results for the year and she really has achieved a breakthrough in the past 2 months. One of the biggest keys, I think, is how she rebounded after the Yakimova mess and burned through the quality girls at Raleigh. Miki obviously regrouped and that is a BIG sign of good things to come. On grass, with her strokes fine-tuned as they appear to be, and her serve beginning to be the weapon it ought to be, she could truly do damage. Again, Mirjana has earned this Wimbledon! Even if it's the quallies, she can go there with her head held high, knowing she earned it and that no one had to hand her a wild card. That being said, I hope she focuses and plays smart, tough tennis in Carson (the hard court will be a good bridge between the clay and the upcoming grass). Right now, I'm automatically thinking that Miki can reasonably win any Challenger she enters. I hope she feels that way, too. It's true. The Konta match is a setback only in that Konta hits with truly outrageous power and outrageous topspin (a little teen-Aussie Nadal), which is murder on clay, and Miki likely was not quite prepared for that big change-up on that day of their Raleigh semi. But with proper practice, she'll be ready for anything.

I can't believe Mirjana is back in the top 200. I hoped, but didn't really think it would happen. I'm so happy for her. :bigcry: < tears of joy

She's very, very close to her highest ranking in almost nine years, since July 2001

She's defending very few points until late September (4 in June, 6 in July) so she'll almost surely continue to climb.

Keep it going, Mirjana!

croat123
May 25th, 2010, 10:29 PM
if she can just make a deep run here, we'll be talking about a ranking in the low 180s/high 170s with almost nothing to defend until september and a calendar with wimbledon and a ton of weak WTA qualies events...I know she has to go match by match but this is her big chance!

Time to update Mirjana's rankings progress once again:

March 2008: 700s
April 2008: 600s
May 2008: 500s
July 2008: 400s
April 2009: 300s
November 2009: 260s
January 2010: 250s
February 2010: 240s
May 2010: 200s
June 2010: 190s :aparty:

btw, this win pretty much guarantees USO qualies :D
all she has to defend is the second round of Palermo qualies and the third round of qualies at a 100k
free ride till the first week of october where she does have some serious points to defend (50K semi + 25K final and semifinal)

miki's draw just got tougher. tamaryn hendler qualified and will face rolle tomorrow. she's pretty solid, but appears to be better on clay than hard

SERVivor
May 26th, 2010, 04:31 AM
Yes, she's in solid form. If she can stay injury free (releativly) and not over-play, by that I mean play too much, she can get into the 150's I think by the time she has to defend those points in the fall. After this week, she should take a weak off while the second week of the french open is being played, then hit the grass in England.

ajmo!
May 26th, 2010, 05:44 AM

Rolle is also in great form(beat Lisjak 62 62)..R2 isn't gonna be easy, whoever she plays

mikireturns
May 26th, 2010, 08:00 AM
Ah ... Miki cracks the Top 200 (just) with this fine opening win. Another worthy milestone achieved in her best year in quite a long time. She has the confidence to beat Rolle and, apparently, from today's near wipe-out, the form to back it up. Rolle is capable of gutsy tennis, but I think Mirjana ought to pull through. I agree that some rest is due before getting on the grass in England. Let's hope someone will find her recent form worthy of their private grass practice court across the Atlantic! Either way, she will go to England with more self-belief than she's had in years. Wouldn't it be wonderful if she made a fine showing at the All England Club? Dare we hope? Sure we do. Kimiko Date-Krumm should be a lesson to everyone out there "trying".

Lucic can beat Rolle. Although, I give Rolle a better chance on hard than clay. Lucic beat her on clay a few weeks ago. Date-Drum was off for alot longer than Lucic, and look what she's done. Date-Drum has achieved her top 100 ranking much faster than Lucic achieved top 200. But Date-Drum has the advantage of having a "throw-back" style which seems to confuse and frustrate the power hitting youngsters. Lucic has a modern power style which is not much different from the new crop. I think that style, which when rusty produces alot of unforced errors, has made it more difficult for Lucic than Date-Drum to crack the top of the rankings. But, now Lucic is finding some consistency to go with the power and since she's only 28, I think she will continue to progress toward the top 100.

May 26th, 2010, 08:37 PM
To really see where is Mirjana we will have to wait for Wimbledon.
But at least she finally plays good. And Date Krumm started her comeback on weak Asian challengers. If Mirjana had the chance to do that I'm sure she would already be in TOP 150 at least.

SERVivor
May 26th, 2010, 08:43 PM
that's a good point. Date-Drum probably faced weaker competition at first in her comeback. It is amazing, though that she's beaten some top players. It had to be kind of embarrasing for Safin to lose to her.
