The Best of the Challenger Circuit are set to compete in Hamilton
July 08, 2005
Top female players from around the globe are coming to Hamilton, Ontario for the $25,000 ITF BC Decker Hamilton Challenger. The Canadian contingent will be lead by Blainville, Quebec’s Aleksandra Wozniak, Montreal’s Melanie Gloria, and Toronto’s Haidy El Tabakh.
Wozniak, the world’s fifth-ranked junior, has already earned an ITF singles title and reached the semifinals of last year’s Hamilton Challenger. Gloria has reached two quarterfinals and a semifinal on the Challenger circuit, but is still seeking her first title. El Tabakh has a singles title and two doubles titles under her belt.
All are ready to rise to the challenge, and looking forward to competing on their home turf, but they will be facing some stiff international competition.
The 32-player draw will include American Tiffany Dabek, a four-time singles champion and three-time doubles champion on the Challenger circuit. Also competing will be Ireland’s Kelly Liggan, who holds two singles and five doubles titles, and Argentina’s Maria-Jose Argeri, a proud owner of an impressive eight career singles titles and 13 doubles titles on the circuit.
After Laval, Quebec’s Stephanie Dubois won last year’s event, Canadian fans will be hoping for one of their own to keep the title in the country for another year.
Giving patriotic fans even more hope will be the Canadian wild cards entered into the tournament. St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec’s Valerie Tetreault, Beaconsfield, Quebec’s Jillian O’Neill, Oakville, Ontario’s Ekaterina Shulaeva, and Toronto’s Laura Pola have been granted wild cards for the main draw. Burlington, Ontario’s Tania Rice, Etobicoke, Ontario’s Katarina Zoricic, Thorold, Ontario’s Eunice David, and Mississauga, Ontario’s Monica Lalewicz were given wild cards for the qualifying draw.
The $25,000 ITF BC Decker Hamilton Challenger promises to offer plenty of intense competition, Canadian content, and top quality, professional tennis at its best. Competition in the qualifying draw will take place on July 10 and 11 and main draw action will get underway on July 12 at the Hamilton Tennis Club. Jul 18th, 2005, 12:29 AM
Guess here from me: Toronto qualies. Though she might play in Vancouver's 25k :wavey:
Jul 18th, 2005, 05:54 PM
I hope she will get a WC for Quebec.she must defend her most points there
Jul 18th, 2005, 10:13 PM
I doubt it honestly! Jack Herisset, friend and tourney director, said he would give the 2 WCs to the people who deserved them the most, not because of the results of that year! I think for sure Marie-Eve will have one, i guess the other one wil lgo to steph, though melanie seems to always be favored here!
Jul 19th, 2005, 12:37 AM
even if she gets a WC, she will NEVER defend all of her points from last year
Jul 19th, 2005, 12:58 AM
i wouldn't give her the wc at quebec, it would be better for her to go through qualies. at least she will get some points that way
Jul 19th, 2005, 07:04 AM
That´s right, but first she must get a WC for QD
Jul 19th, 2005, 06:05 PM
Oh she will get a Qualy WC. No doubt about that. Or I think she won't even need one, she'll enter directly!
Aug 5th, 2005, 01:37 AM
Melanie won her first round at $25,000 Vancouver tournament she beat Lauren Barnikow 7-6(4) 6-4 :bounce: one of only 3 Candians to make it past the first round.
Aug 10th, 2005, 11:04 PM
Melanie reached the final in Vancouver but lost to Cargill  :D
Aug 13th, 2005, 06:30 PM
Melanie lost to Camerin
Aug 14th, 2005, 12:18 AM
what a bad performance
Aug 14th, 2005, 12:47 AM
ya mattieu and poulin, it seems that Gloria only lasted 30 min on the court today instead of Maureen Drake like you two predicted.
Aug 14th, 2005, 08:39 AM
I think it was too early with Quebec
Aug 14th, 2005, 03:50 PM
gloria is injured
Aug 14th, 2005, 07:50 PM
gloria is injured
that might explain this poor result in roger cup qualifying, Maria Elena Camerin (ITA) d. Melanie Gloria (CAN) 61 61.
Aug 19th, 2005, 10:14 AM
yes I think she can´t play the Junior US Open
Aug 19th, 2005, 05:09 PM
PLease stop calling me Poulin and please stop putting trouble in our canadian forum which was clearly better before you arrived.
And pleast check your things before posting joey, Melanie had a severe abdominal injury which prevented her from serving and didn't help her backhand which is her strenght.
Aug 20th, 2005, 02:18 AM
ok...your cool, im not starting shit, im just correcting the shit you try to start. You were saying that Maureen would get killed, and the results showed that ,again, you have NO idea what your talking about cause Gloria got beaten. That's all :worship:
Aug 29th, 2005, 08:08 AM
Is Melanie playing Junior USO??
Aug 29th, 2005, 03:19 PM
She is playing Repentigny, then Junior Us Open. Well that is what is planned. With her injury, I don't know what will happen though
Aug 30th, 2005, 08:09 AM
´Has anybody a result of Qualifying???
Aug 30th, 2005, 01:57 PM
Melanie won first round of Canadian Junior Open :bounce:

Oct 22nd, 2005, 01:21 AM
I think the same!!
wining at least one or 2 rounds in qualys!!
because she can beat some poeple there for shure
Oct 23rd, 2005, 02:08 AM
I hope she's 100 percent! Imagine if she qualified again? That'd be wild.
Oct 23rd, 2005, 10:34 PM
I think she could. But I don't see her getting close to quarters again
Oct 29th, 2005, 06:38 PM
Oh noo she must play against Cargill she lost to her thís year :bigcry:
Oct 29th, 2005, 06:46 PM

Well didn't happen, see my Qualy report to get more info!
Oct 30th, 2005, 01:38 AM
Poor Melanie. I was so happy to meet her though. When I saw her for the first time, I was like Oh my God! Then I asked her for an autograph and she was so nice. She's so cute, she's so much smaller than I imagined, so frail.
May I use this as Avatar? :hearts: (But I can´t resize it)
Oct 30th, 2005, 09:36 AM

Jan 27th, 2006, 06:07 PM
where´s she?
Jan 28th, 2006, 05:13 PM
No idea. I think right now she is in a tough time, she has to make the decision if she wants to keep on trying on the WTa tour, or she prefers to join the American University circuit. I'm pretty sure she is hesitating between both now.
Feb 11th, 2006, 05:43 PM
She is attending Fresno State University on a scholarship. http://gobulldogs.collegesports.com/sports/w-tennis/fres-w-tennis-body.html
She decided that would be better than trying to make a living in the pros.
Feb 12th, 2006, 08:04 PM
Well I must say I am not that surprised as you can see by my last post, but what I am surprised about is the choice of her university. Fresno is clearly weak, and with her portfolio she could enter whatever university she wants. I understand school is important for her, but I still think she could have used the chance of her past results to get into a very well-known university. Maybe she wanted to follow Vanessa Héroux in Fresno ;)
Feb 13th, 2006, 04:16 AM
Maybe the coach is appealing ;)
Feb 14th, 2006, 03:27 AM
Very possible from what I read recently. Well I jsut hope she is happy in her choice and does her best there :wavey:
Feb 14th, 2006, 08:25 PM
I wish u all the best Mel :D
I hope you come back in some years ;)
Mar 2nd, 2006, 07:12 PM
Does anyone know if Melanie is playing the "Tivoli Arade Ladies Open 2006"?

I don't expect her to play any pro tourneys now that she is in NCAA
Mar 4th, 2006, 07:44 AM
Thank you I forgot she is a Frosh at Fresno State.
Jul 8th, 2006, 10:26 PM
Mel is on the Entry List for a 25k in Hamilton :D
Jul 8th, 2006, 10:30 PM
Hope she'll play there :yeah:
Jul 10th, 2006, 07:06 AM
Awesome! I hope she goes. Maybe I can go!
Well, not to play of course. My level of play is clearly above the 25k level.
Jul 11th, 2006, 04:53 AM
Funny enough Laura, you could enter that tourney if you wanted to.

Melanie Gloria and Tinesta Rowe – They’re No. 1
The Fresno State women's tennis program has boasted some outstanding doubles teams over the past several years. This year, the dynamic duo is Melanie Gloria and Tinesta Rowe. They’ve earned a place in Fresno State history with their No. 1 national ranking.
Melanie and Tinesta, who are both international students, love tennis – and Fresno State. Each is majoring in business.
"Tennis has always been a part of my life, but since I've come to Fresno State, I've been able to add so much more to who I am,” says Tinesta, who is from Ocho Rios, Jamaica.
“The interaction that I have with the community, professors and teammates is something I will always cherish.”
Melanie, who is from Montreal, Canada, says she likes her business classes “and the knowledge I've gained about the business world in general.”
“I've also been able to build lasting friendships with people from all over the world, and that is something that I value greatly," she adds.
Melanie and Tinesta have been a potent combination since being paired early in the dual season last year. The two finished the year 13-5 overall and were participants in the 2007 NCAA Doubles tournament. During the fall season, the women went 9-2 and had wins over six ranked opponents.
They participated in the All-American and National Indoors and won the ITA Northwest Regional, one of the toughest in the nation.
"It's great to see that Melanie and Tinesta have been rewarded for such an outstanding fall season," head coach Simon Thibodeau said. "They played well in big tournaments and have become a very consistent doubles team. Melanie and Tinesta have great potential."

No. 16 Bulldogs open season in Berkeley
September 24, 2008
By George Stepanoff
With the arrival of the fall season, the women’s tennis team has high expectations for the upcoming season and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) preseason singles and doubles rankings reflect the expectations the Bulldogs have for themselves.
Fresno State returns nearly every player from last season and is the only school in the country with two doubles teams in the Top 8 of the ITA preseason rankings.
The rankings were released a week ago and feature the Bulldog duo of Melanie Gloria and Tinesta Rowe as the top doubles team in the nation.
Returning players nationally ranked
In addition, Anastasia Petukhova and Renata Kucerkova are ranked No. 8 in the nation for doubles.
“The rankings are accurate and based on last year’s success. Melanie and Tinesta finished last year at No. 2, but the No. 1 team were seniors,” coach Simon Thibodeau said. “Anastasia and Renata won an unbelievable 45 matches last year and are very deserving of the 8 spot.”
Gloria and Rowe reached the final of the NCAA Tournament in doubles last season, while Petukhova and Kucerkova reached the semi-final.
All four earned First Team All-American honors.
The Bulldogs fare well in the singles department as well. The Bulldogs are represented with Gloria at No. 12, Petukhova at No. 16 and Rowe at No. 86.
“We have a lot of room for improvement in singles, but are very happy to be recognized nationally in the rankings,” Gloria said.
“We will definitely have more singles players ranked this year. I feel Renata was deserving of a Top 100 singles ranking as she defeated numerous ranked players last season. She will have to prove it once again this year,” Thibodeau added.
Trying for Top 10
The Bulldogs took part in their first exhibition game of the season last Saturday and found out their depth is what might get them over the hump this year.
“We’ve been extremely close to the Top 10 in the last couple years,” Rowe said. “Sometimes a point here or there has separated us from the Top 10, and I feel this year could be the year we go from a good team to an elite team.”
The Bulldogs come in ranked 16th in the nation as a team. They lost in the round of 16 last season, and every team that lost in the round of 16 last year is ranked between No. 9-16 this season.
“I feel it is fair to be there at the moment,” Thibodeau said. “This year, with the arrival of two talented freshmen and the improvement and learning experience of our seniors, I feel much better deep down our lineup, especially when we measure up against the Top 10 teams.”
Looming team turnover puts pressure on coach
The Bulldogs are confident about winning their doubles points against any team in the nation, but that is only one point out of seven. They know they must be much more consistent in singles to take it to the next level.
“We need to go out there and execute our shots,” Gloria said. “Winning in doubles gives us momentum going into singles play, but we need to play with the same intensity in singles from the No. 1 to No. 6 position.”
The Bulldogs’ window of opportunity might be closing soon though. They have had the same team the last two years and will be losing four key members at the end of the season, including Gloria and Rowe.
This adds a bit more pressure on Thibodeau.
“I need to improve our quality of practices and find and create new drills to get the team better and smarter. Certainly, I want to be somewhere in the Top 10, but I’ll need a complete team effort and performance every time we take the court,” Thibodeau said. “If we dig deep, we’ll take it to that next level.”
The Bulldogs begin their season Friday in Berkeley for the Nike Invitational.

The Fresno Bee
Fresno State's Melanie Gloria and Anastasia Petukhova were eliminated in singles at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Championships, but both advanced to the quarterfinals in doubles.
Gloria and partner Tinesta Rowe, ranked No. 1 by the ITA, beat the Baylor team of Lenka Broosova/Csilla Borsanyi 8-6.
Petukhova and Renata Kucerkova, ranked No. 8, defeated No. 7 Georgia Rose/Lauren Liu of Northwestern 9-7.
Gloria, No. 12 in singles, lost to No. 1 Aurelija Miseviciute of Arkansas 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4. Petukhova, No. 16, lost to No. 9 Fani Chifchieca of Auburn 1-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3.
