Venus is the key player. She must win 3 points to pull victory for US...

Venus. If she can't win her singles matches then it's hopeless.

The best answer is Venus.

They are playing Russia, which is a team composed of Safina, Douchevina, Myskina, and Dementieva. The USA has Venus, Craybas, Washington and Morariu. It will most likely look like this:
Venus/Morariu in doubles
Venus in 2 singles
then the other 2 singles will be split between Craybas/Washington or one will have both.

If Venus plays well and comes through, she will get 3 points and the victory for the US. If she can't iwn and loses lets say, the doubles. That means that either Craybas or Washington will have to beat Dementieva or Natsya, or atleast Safina or Douchevina, which Craybas and Washington both have an 0-1 record against both of them.
So, basically, the only way that the US can win is if Venus wins every match she plays and the score will be 3-2 (I'm not saying Craybas or Mashona couldn't win, but according to the past, their records, their rankings, etc, the odds are against them).

If Venus doesn't play well and win every match, the US will lose to Russia. Therefore, she is the most crucial to her team.

If you look at Myskina for example. Even if she loses a match, she still has Dementieva there to play well or vise versa.
If you look at Mauresmo. She too has other players to back her up, such as Pierce, Dechy or even Razzano. And let's face it, they aren't exactly playing a "good" team, so she doesn't have to play well for them to win.
If you look at Vives or Medina, there team isn't very good anyway and they are playing a very good French team, so none of them are really crucial to there team, they are all equals.

So, as you can see, the only answer is Venus cause every other team has 2 stars or atleast players who can pull off upsets, except the United States.

Myskina. She could beat anyone or lose anyone. Who knows...

yes, but that would not be crucial to her team. Even if she loses, she still has Dementieva to back her up, and even Safina or Vera if they play Mashona or Jill. She is an important part of the team, but she will most likely not play 3 events (singles 2x and doubles) because of the other players on her team, so if she loses her team can still win.

i would say it will be Venus, but also Jill and Mashona. If one of them can cause an upset it will make it alot easier for Venus. If it comes to the doubles I would say Nastya/Lena D should be able to beat Venus and whoever they play with her. But can Nastya Venus and Lena D all cope with three matches in 2 days?
