Am not usually one to follow WTT, but with Hingis playing several matches this year, including one against Navratilova, I thought we should have a thread for it. :)

So please post WTT news and results here, and especially, I hope someone will post the times and network where any televised matches can be seen, especially that Martina vs Martina one! Thanks!

FROM ESPN: http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tennis/news/story?id=2098944

Martina Hingis isn't done with tennis quite yet.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Hingis, the former world No. 1 who won five Grand Slam singles titles and nine Grand Slam doubles titles, was set to make her World TeamTennis debut Tuesday night in Radnor, Pa.

"It's my first appearance," Hingis was quoted as saying. "I don't want to disappoint the team."

Hingis, whose career was cut short by ankle injuries three years ago, attempted a comeback earlier this year but decided to stay retired after losing a match in Thailand to Marlene Weingartner, then ranked 173rd.

The Inquirer said Hingis, 24, in unsure how she'll react to the noisy WTT atmosphere, but what she misses most since retiring is playing in front of crowds.

"They cheer you on," she told the Inquirer. "You walk in and you have this buzz.

"I was always a much better team player, a doubles player," she added. "I enjoy that more. You have somebody to talk to on the court."

Hingis will play six matches for the New York Sportimes this season.

Thanks, Meesh! :hearts:

Radnor is actually not too far from me. Wish I could go.

Something tells me this thread might not take off -- I see visions of GM clogged with WTT threads! Oh well, I tried! :)

I'm so very thankful that Elena Likhovtseva was there. I was REALLY annoyed because I thought (and they touted) Nicole Vaidisova would be there.

Not to mention Tamarine Tanasugarn (who I've never had the pleasure of watching) was touted for the Laser team and somehow we got Kelly McCain instead. :fiery:

from WTT web site:

2005 WTT Season: Looking ahead at Week One

The first week of the WTT Pro League presented by Advanta includes the introduction of the WTT Coaches Challenge, WTT's version of instant replay where coaches can challenge a limited number of calls each match.

July 7 will be a popular night of WTT tennis from coast to coast. The Battle of the Martinas will rage in Boston when Martina Navratilova (Boston Lobsters) and Martina Hingis (NY Sportimes) face off for the first time ever in singles. :):):):):) The Lobsters are new to the League this season, having last played in Beantown in 1978. Martina (Navratilova -- Hingis was only 2 years old at the time) was also on that 1978 team along with current Lobsters coach Anne Smith.

On the West Coast, Anna Kournikova makes her debut for the Sacramento Capitals when they travel to the home of the 2005 WTT Champs, the Newport Beach Breakers, on July 7.

Actually, Martinas have faced each other in some exhibition match in late 1994 - they were in same event, it was one of the Navratilova's last singles tournaments and one of Hingis' first. They didn't meet in the main draw, but played an exhibition match, which Martina Sr won.

Thanks, I didn't know that. :)

As for Anna K, I doubt she will be playing any singles. I'm afraid the marketing of her name may lead to disappointment for her fans expecting to see her in all 3 segments, singles, doubles, and mixed.

i think Martina(H)/Anna played Martina(N)/ASV in Moscow once?
2000? i believe Hingis/Kournikova won that one

and given the reports from Eastbourne and WTT, Martina still has a chance to do really well in WTA doubles.

The Spice Girls met Navratilova/ASV at Filderstadt 2001 and won 6-3 6-4. It was during their 'reunion Tour' after their first split :)

Doubles field is so weak these times that Hingis could pair with pretty much anyone and destroy opposition. I'd like to see her pair up with Davenport - they abandoned their doubles partnership because they became each others' chief singles rivals and it would have been too awkward; but I believe they would be nigh unbeatable today...

yep, Steffi is going to play :hearts: -- but just ONCE. :( Her team, Houston, will play against Sacramento. A tape of that match will be shown in ESPN2, I think -- I might have to tape that one! :):):):):)

Timariot -- I agree about Martina and Lindsay! They'd be fantastic. Martina was such a genius in doubles. Remember when she won the Aus Open doubles with Lucic, who was only about 15 at the time? I think they even had to take a WC to get in. I loved the Martina-Monica team, too -- I remember them beating the Williams-Williams team, something I don't think Martina was able to do with any other partner (though maybe I'm wrong) -- but I don't think Monica felt like dealing with the uber-intense Melanie over an extended period of time.

'Extended period of time' meaning 'about two weeks' in this case  Hingis must have been sorry about that, she is a big Monica fan...

Steffi Graf returns to court -- for one match

By KRISTIE RIEKEN, Associated Press Writer
July 11, 2005

HOUSTON (AP) -- Steffi Graf is returning to the tennis court for the first time in six years, but don't call it a comeback.

The 22-time Grand Slam singles champion is interrupting her retirement on Tuesday to play with the Houston Wranglers of the World Team Tennis Pro League.

``It's hard for me to call it a comeback,'' Graf told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. ``It's too early to say if there will be more. It's hard with all the schedules. If it works out, maybe there is another one.''

Tuesday's match is Graf's only one this season as a member of the Wranglers. Houston will take on the Sacramento Capitals, led by Anna Kournikova at Houston's Westside Tennis Club.

Much has changed in the 36-year-old Graf's life since she retired in August 1999 as the third-ranked player in the world.

She married Andre Agassi and had two children -- a boy in 2001 and a girl in 2003.

``Time is a big factor,'' Graf said. ``For a few years, I barely played. It's not easy with my husband still on tour. It's been a challenge to stay in shape.''

Graf, who won 107 career singles titles, said juggling the demands of motherhood and her charity work made it difficult to establish a strict training regimen.

``This year I just picked up the racket more frequently than I have in the last five years,'' she said. ``I've practiced quite a bit the past two weeks, but before that it was very sporadic.''

The 36-year-old German had what is widely considered her best year in 1988, when she won all four Grand Slam singles events in a year and also won an Olympic gold medal.

She acknowledges being ``very nervous'' about the match but also excited about her return.

``It's huge that she is putting her toe in the water,'' said Ilana Kloss, WTT chief executive officer and commissioner. ``I think she's going to see how she feels. ...but we're absolutely thrilled to have her.''

Graf said the generosity that Wranglers owners Jim and Linda McIngvale have shown to her and Agassi's foundations over the years was a major factor in her decision to play again.

Graf played an exhibition match last year in Germany against Gabriela Sabatini.

Graf said she has been trying to strengthen her knees and back after suffering several injuries during her playing career.

She's looking forward to playing in front of a crowd in the fan-friendly format of the WTT, but she cautioned against high expectations.

``How can I be the same,'' she said. ``I live a different lifestyle in general. I think they will see that I'm a little more relaxed than I used to be.

``It will be interesting to see how it's going to work tomorrow (Tuesday).''

The WTT league is made up of 12 teams and plays a three week season ending July 24. The two top teams from each of two conferences advance to the finals Sept. 16-17 in Sacramento.

The coed league, co-founded by Billie Jean, is in its 30th season.

Graf ends night on winning note

Former top-ranked player loses first two matches

Wednesday, July 13, 2005

Graf retired in 1999 after winning 22 Grand Slam titles.

HOUSTON, Texas (Reuter) -- Germany's Steffi Graf was beaten twice in her one-off return to competitive tennis on Tuesday, before salvaging some pride by ending the night on a winning note in a World Team Tennis (WTT) event in Houston.

Representing the Houston Wranglers, the 36-year-old Graf was unable to shake off the rust of a six-year absence, losing her singles match to Russia's Elena Likhovtseva of the Sacramento Capitals 5-4.

In the tournament, the teams play best-of-nine game single-set matches in five disciplines, two singles and three doubles.

Graf, who retired in 1999 after winning 22 grand slam titles, then teamed up with Ansley Cargill in women's doubles but lost 5-2 to Likhovtseva and Anna Kournikova.

However, the German was successful in the mixed doubles after she and Mardy Fish overcame Mark Knowles and Kournikova 5-3.

Graf, who is married to Andre Agassi and is the mother of two children, said Tuesday's match would be her only WTT appearance of the season.

The WTT league is made up of 12 teams and plays a three week season ending July 24. The two top teams from each of two conferences advance to the finals September 16-17 in Sacramento.

The coed league, co-founded by Billie Jean King, is in its 30th season.

Graf, ranked No. 3 in the world when she retired in 1999, had her best tennis year in 1988, when she won an Olympic gold medal and all four Grand Slam singles events.

gorecki, I didn't get to see Rafter.

As for Stef, apparently she played the women's doubles match first and was extremely nervous, but settled in better during her singles match, then won her final match, the mixed. Too bad she couldn't have kept going after finally getting warmed up! :)

Lucky Houstonians who got to see her.
