I'm surprised that Schiavone, Schruff, Osterloh and Weingartener never won a title! Ossteroh plays challenger in US... Schiavone wasn't able to win a 75K challenger last year :help: lost to Bychkova

Question: Who is the LOWEST ranked player who is active on the tour to have won a tour title? Like obviously someone like Bovina who hasn't played is pretty low in the rankings and will continue to fall if she does not play - so she would not count in this list.

I already know the lowest ranked players to have ever won a tournament title (Widjaja, Lucic, Srebotnik all won their first wta tournament they played).

#291 Daja Bedanova perhaps

Probably Rita Kuti Kis would be the lowest legit one. Ranked outside of the top 250 now, but won Sao Paolo in 2000.

Iroda is outside of the top 350, but she's not been playing a full schedule.

You could say Dokic, too. But she's not exactly "active".

I think Fran should just play a sucky 75k or sthing to get some points. Or just some clay tier 3 and 4, she could certainly get a title!

The thread's question is more interesting regarding only WTA titles, as any decent player can take an ITF if she really wanted to.

What is the highest rank:
1) Reached before winning a title?
2) Reached by a player who stayed titleless?

To the best of my knowledge, the answers are
1) Petrova #6 (maybe followed by Schiavone #11)
2) Kournikova #8

I'll greatly appreciate a top 5 (or 10) list to both.

Steffi Graf was #3 before she won her first title, I believe to remember.

You're probably right, although it's not easy to confirm this (1986 mid-year rankings are hard to find).
Chanda Rubin was #6 in 1996 without a title.

Thanks to AnnaK_4ever for his answer:

"Betty Stove was #5 without ever winning a WTA tour title, Kournikova was #8, Winnie Shaw was #10.
I believe they are the only top-tenners to have never won a title.

As for players who broke into top-10 before winning a title it's a tough question. The ones I know for sure are Graf (#3), Zvereva (#5), Rubin and Petrova (both #6), Dementieva (#9), Habsudova (#10)."

So that makes the list of highest ranks achieved with no WTA titles look like this (in parenthesis - first title won):
1) #3 Graf (Hilton Head, April 1986)
2) #5 Stove (never won a title)
2) #5 Zvereva (Brisbane 1990)
4) #6 Rubin (Linz 1997)
4) #6 Petrova (Linz 2005)
6) #8 Kournikova (never won a title)
7) #9 Dementieva (Amelia Island 2003)
8) #10 Shaw (never won a title)
8) #10 Habsudova (Pörtschach 1999)
10) #11 Schiavone (Bad Gastein 2007)

Since getting to the top 10 without a title is obviously a rare feat, Kimberly Po may be the highest ranked player ever with no tour finals, at #14.

She did have 4 semis, most notably Tier I Montreal (from qualies) and 3 QF including the AO when she got there (June 1997).

According to Wikipedia Betty Stove won a singles title, Tokyo Open 1976 (precursor of Japan Open?), beating Court in the final:

WTA and ITF have no trace of this, but both have very little info outside majors before at least 1981, so that doesn't really prove much.
Given that this info is true, that restores Anna K to the thrown which most tennis fans associate her with, that of the titleless GOAT :p

If I'm not missing something, Sloane Stephens has broken that record and is now probably the highest ranked player of all time that hasn't made a WTA final, #11 and counting.

She has also entered top 10 all-time without (or prior to winning) a title.
