Svennovitch
Jun 15th, 2005, 02:49 PM
From yesterday on wimbledon.org:

Two former Junior Wimbledon champions were in action today and both Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium and Katarina Bondarenko were able to progress to the second round of qualifying.
Flipkins attacked nearly every ball that came her way during her match against third seeded, Lindsey Lee Waters of the USA and overwhelmed the American with the pressure of her returns. The tough Belgian - winner of Junior Wimbledon in 2003 - looked comfortable on the grass courts of Roehampton and appears to be a main contender for qualification.

The two Junior Girls Champions of the past two years are now just one match away from making their debuts in the main draw of the Ladies Singles. Both, however, arrived at the Qualifying Round stage at Roehampton in contrasting manners, Belgium's Kirsten Flipkens easing past her opponent whilst the reigning junior champion from the Ukraine, Katerin Bondarenko, struggled to settle her nerves before claiming her victory.

In what were extremely difficult blustery conditions following a delayed start, Flipkens gained early control, using the wind to good effect as she overwhelmed her opponent from Bosnia/Herzegovina, Mervana Jugic-Salkic in the first set.

The Bosnian number one did rally somewhat in the second but the Belgian's top spin and more varied shot - at one point she executed a drop shot on a return of serve - was never really threatened as she emerged a comfortable 6-0, 6-2 winner. Flipkens now faces another former strong junior, America's Ashley Harkleroad for that vital spot in Monday's main draw.

"Mentally it was a tough match," Flipkens said afterwards. "During the rain delay you had to remain focused for the match and even more so when you are winning 6-0."

Commenting on the blustery conditions, she agreed they weren't easy, but she wanted to use them to her advantage, adding: "I wanted the wind to be my friend."

Flipkens was also carrying heavy strapping around her midriff and revealed it was purely a preventative measure to protect her back and an injury which had kept her out of the game for eight months.

Kirsten

Another American to progress was Ashley Harkleroad who ran out the winner against 2003 girl's champion, Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium, 7-5, 6-2. The first set was an emotionally intense and physically draining affair, with both players attacking each other relentlessly for the right to qualify. However, it was Harkleroad who finally took charge of the match, breaking at 2-2 in the second set and defending two break points against her own serve to consolidate her lead. Screaming with delight as her opponent failed to return her first serve on match point, Harkleroad realized that she had qualified for next week's main draw.
