I agree. It's soooooo boring watching an injured Agassi losing to a friggin' qualifier. He lookks to be bagelled in the 5th.

A great win for Sharapova. She had a horrible draw for the first round. Linetskaya showed why no one wanted to draw her first round nearly pulling off the huge upset.

Props to Sharapova for pulling it out and was that match a battle of grunts. :D Sharapova powered her way through Linetskaya and her movement has greatly improved. The plus I can see from this match for Sharapova was that she kept patient in those long rallies, where Linetskaya was just returning every shot Sharapova threw at her.

Great match from Linetskaya getting to all those balls but I think she needs t develop a weapon that can finish her points off. She could've won this match if it weren't for maybe getting tight in the big points. I felt a bit bad for her. She was up 3-1 in that final set.

They showed parts of this match during Agassi's and Maria really is not patient enough. Error after error from Maria, neither player could hold serve. If Maria's opponent held serve at the minimum she would of won the match.

Why does Pam Shriver continue to say that Linetskaya's biggest win was against Zvonareva. I remember Linetskaya beating Mauresmo at Indian Wells?
Anyway. She had her chances. She'll need to work on her second serve. Sharapova should make it to the quarters now.

Maria didn't play well. She made more than 50 unforced errors and had many double faults. I hope that she will do better next round. It was a tough match. :(

P.s. I saw Maria K. during the match. It seems that she came to cheer Maria S. Good friend!!! ;)

Man Sharapova should've lost today.
based on what?

anyway, great fight from maria. hopefully she comes out a little bit better next round and spends less time on court.
stats aren't too too bad either. 50 winners, 59 unforced errors in a long three set math isn't that bad. she should really clean up the double faults though-- those account for 11 of her errors, and that's way too many.

Masha has a horrible draw at RG.

Glad she got through so well against a Linetskaya who was getting everything back, hitting powerful shots and very rarely missing the lines.

It was sheer determination from Masha that forced a way through. She gave away too many points on DF, but otherwise her game was great, and she really earned her win. She was clearly delighted with the win at the end.

Congratulations Masha! :bounce: :worship: :bounce:

Hope you get some easier wins from now on!

I wish some people would shut up whingeing constantly about Masha grunting!

Eugenia was making just as much noise! But no complaint for some reason.

If you don't like grunts in sport, try watching snooker or bowls.

Sharapova Survives Linetskaya

Evgenia Linetskaya was threatening to reduce Maria Sharapova's French Open fortnight to the length of a Paris postcard. The Wimbledon winner had pounded her way past 27 of the 32 opponents she's faced this year, but found herself one point away from a 1-4 deficit in the decisive set today.

Rather than resort to a plea for leniency, Sharapova came back slugging to win five of the final six games and score a 6-7(3), 6-2, 6-4 victory in a Roland Garros opening-round battle of 18-year-old Russians.

"It was definitely tough. I mean when you're down a break in the third, you're just begging for mercy," Sharapova said. "But I just tried to fight it out and tried to find a way, just an opening. As the third set went on, I thought the conditions were a little lighter and the ball flew faster. I was able to hit shots that she wasn't able to run down."

The 41st-ranked Linetskaya gave Sharapova the runaround in chasing down her shots and often inducing the 2004 Roland Garros quarterfinalist into overly-ambitious errors.

"In the first and second set, I felt like she was running down every single ball. No matter how good my ball was, it was coming back," Sharapova said. "In the third, I felt like everything seemed lighter and I could hit the ball and I got a good advantage from it."

Sharapova should have an easier time in the second round as she takes on French wild card Aravane Rezai.

"When I came off the court I really thought these are the sort of matches I play for because I would have loved to win 1-0," Sharapova said. "That would have been great. But, you know, when you come off the court and you feel like you were losing the whole match, and all of a sudden you pulled it out, you know, it's those moments that you feel you've trained for and you work hard for. Just lucky to get through. Of course, you know, playing other Russians is never easy. She's your compatriot. When you go on court, you just try to forget about my opponent, where she's from or who she is."

For me it's the pitch. Maria screams whereas Svetlana is the exact opposite...she growls...LenaD and Linetskaya are in the middle...it doesn't get in my nerves but they do it all the time. Guess it's a Russian thing...

Found it funny how Linetskaya's grunts became high pitched whenever she netted a forehand or backhand in long rally. I found it really weird whenever Maria switches from "Vamos!" and "Come on!". I know she practices at Ferrero's academy which explains the vamos. Just a little observation of mine, there's nothing wrong with it though. :D

great match, commentators kept saying Zhenya 's movement wasn't too good, then at one stage turned on Maria's movement, could have fooled Me, both were moving pretty good

the commentators we had were also asking why Yuri wasn't there! it kept showing maria's hitting partner, when Yuri was sitting a couple of seats away!

Glad Maria eventually took that match, hard luck Zhenya.
