Maria Sharapova hasn't played her first round Roland Garros match yet, but she's already made her mark on French Open viewers. The image of the second-seeded Sharapova striking shots in a new Canon camera commercial made its debut during ESPN's Roland Garros coverage today.

The commercial shows the Wimbledon winner blasting balls fired from a ball machine to create an unexpected picture-making moment. Sharapova makes a powerful statement with her forehand and backhand, spelling out the words, "MARIA WAS HERE" in tennis-ball type imbedded in the back fence. The force of Sharapova's shots brings down the back wall as the 30-second ad closes with the Canon tag line "Make Every Shot a Power Shot."

The PowerShot campaign marks the first phase of a multi-year relationship between Canon and Sharapova, signed last fall that includes global advertising, retail promotions and events. The ad campaign runs through the end of June 2005. A print ad will accompany the launch of "Practice" and can be seen in various high-profile consumer magazines.

The 18-year-old Sharapova also endorses Colgate-Palmolive, Motorola, Tag Heuer, Sega and Parlux.

Sharapova can surpass top-ranked Lindsay Davenport for the top spot in the WTA Tour rankings by advancing one round further than Davenport at the French Open.

I don't root for her either, but I have nothing against her. It's great for the sport of tennis to finally have another player out there advertising non-tennis products. Haven't seen much of that in the US aside from Andre, Serena, and Venus.

i must see that commercial...

it is quite interesting that sharpy needs to reach one round further to get the no.1 ranking from lindsay.. and the draw tells us that both are going to potentially meet the belgians for a place in the quarterfinal... they both lost to the same belgians the last time they met... interesting to see if any one could reach further...:wavey:

and currently, sharpy is having a hard time in the first round, just like lindsay!

:spit: that was so wrong.

It's one of the great tennis commercials. I think its right up there with the Haas/Philippoussis Pacific Life commercial.

It's corny to say the least. But she looks great in it. I'm trying to see if they're playing the Steffi/Agassi commercial more or this one.

Yes, she certainly has made enough now, so she should go sit in a cave and be sure not to make any more.

Maria already had signed the Canon deal. This just means the commercial she filmed in April is now on tv.

Weird thing with money. People are ready to do just about everything in order to earn it even more even they have more than enough already for basic needs.

And btw. appart from her fans who are those people who are going to buy Canon camera because of Sharapova!?!

If a company wants to pay her, she'll take their money.

Are you also going to say that Andre is in tennis for the money or the Williams sisters are in tennis for the money since they gladly took the opportunity to do big money endorsements as well?

Steffi /Agassi getting more airtime...but then again they have more star power.

As long as it's not illegal and in this case absolutelly not, it's a fine way to earn your money. Without going to politics, if people don't like to earn money on their own merit they can freely go one of the few remaining socialistic paradises if there are any.

Correction? THEY??? :haha:
that commercial is all andre, dude. Steffi is a bystander to his star.

Most people who watch that commercial say, "Wow, they made Brooke Shields look like a pretty good tennis player!"

And the airtime has nothing to do with star power, to now one's surprise, you have no idea what you are talking about. Genworth Financial is a way bigger sponsor of RG specific ESPN coverage than Canon cameras, and that's why the commercial is shown more. It also makes for a horrible argument on your part about the starpower because Canon ditched the Agassi ads for the new Sharapova ad.

but then again, you could have just been kidding... or will claim to have been later...

probably not. but canon needs to get their product advertised so people have name/brand recognition so that when people go to buy a camera they say "oh, i've heard of that brand before." they won't necessarily remember that crazy maria advertisement, but it establishes familiarity with a good audience, the tennis audience. hopefully this makes sense. it's their choice to pick maria as the person to use in their commercial because they think it will be good for their sales.
