Scroll down to see the can't-miss first-round matches, some dark-horse candidates and his final predictions.
Top 16 seeds
1. Lindsay Davenport: True, Davenport has turned in some encouraging clay-court results this year and isn't totally clueless with dirt underfoot. But it's been six years since she's survived the middle weekend in Paris. Subjective seeding, s'il vous plait?
2. Maria Sharapova: Not unlike Davenport, her seeding fails to reflect reality. The event is on her worst surface, and she comes in on something of a downer, having failed to sew up the top ranking. Could well fall to Paola Suarez, as she did in 2004.
3. Amelie Mauresmo: Nice draw, comes in having won Rome, the elemental game has always been first rate, and she will be a homecourt fave whomever she plays. And yet ... we all know the story. Mental frailty always seems to be underscored at home Grand Slam.
4. Elena Dementieva: Her punchline of a serve doesn't get exploited quite so badly on the slow clay. But last year's losing finalist has played underwhelming tennis lately. And she could get an early test from unsung Barbora "Babsy" Strycova.
5. Anastasia Myskina: The defending champion has all but disappeared since last year's title -- buffeted by physical and personal issues. If she can keep her head and find some swagger, she has a real chance to get back on the map. An early loss and she can bid adieu to the top 10.
6. Svetlana Kuznetsova: The Barcelona training imbued her with clay-court skills, but -- like all the Russians, it seems -- '05 has not been kind to her. Look at her draw, and she can cruise for two rounds but then look for Gisela Dulko to take her out.
7. Nadia Petrova: A terrific athlete, all-court player, terminal underachiever. In theory, she ought to live up to her seeding, but she often finds a way not to ...
8. Patty Schnyder: Not only is this tricky, combustible lefty playing some of the best tennis of her operatic career, but she is in the iffy Davenport/Kim Clijsters quadrant.
9. Vera Zvonareva: Owner of the most hyperactive tear ducts in tennis. She has performed well in France before (even took a set off of Serena Williams at age 16), but her results this year have been modest at best. And even in the best of times her on-court attitude in shaky.
10. Justine Henin-Hardenne: Your '05 champion. Playing as well anyone, as mentally tough as anyone and, after losing so much time to injuries and illness, she won't squander the opportunity.
11. Venus Williams: She's left to carry the family banner after sister Serena withdrew. It's nice to see signs of life last week, albeit at a Tier IV. The aura has long faded, but she still has to be considered at least a minor threat. It's not hard to see some clay specialist -- such as Fabiola Zuluaga in round two -- send Venus out with a whimper. But it's also not hard to see her live up to her seeding on power alone.
12. Elena Bovina: A talented player but not on clay. She has never advanced beyond the third round at Roland Garros.
13. Natalie Dechy: A nice, fluid game but something other than grace under pressure.
14. Kim Clijsters: The state of her right knee has a huge bearing on the women's draw. If she can play her way into form, she has a legitimate shot to win. If not, her quadrant opens up.
15. Jelena Jankovic: The current WTA flavor-of-the-month has a chance to make a name for herself in Paris. Star this pony on your racing form.
16. Elena Likhovtseva: The Russian veteran is likely to win a few rounds and then fall to another veteran Sylvia Farina Elia.
Seeds No. 17 to 32
17. Tatiana Golovin: She's due for a real breakthrough Slam. Why not on her home soil?
18. Silvia Farina Elia: She is still going strong, well into her 30s.
21. Mary Pierce: Best days are behind her, but the '00 champ is still capable of fine matches.
22. Francesca Schiavone: A gritty, scrappy player who will play for hours if need be.
25. Dinara Safina: Almost as mercurial as her brother but always a threat.
26. Paola Suarez: A semifinalist last year, Suarez has been struggling with injury.
29. Ana Ivanovic: Like SCG'er Jankovic, she is one of the better players you've likely never seen.
30. Gisela Dulko: Up and comer, especially on clay.
31. Karolina Sprem: She has done little of late but, thanks partially to a cushy draw, could swim upstream in Paris.
Dark horse nation
Tatiana Perebiynis: She is more than a doubles standout.
Virginie Razzano: This veteran has played well of late.
Shahar Peer: The scrappy Israeli will make opponents work for every point.
Maria Kirilenko: Martina Hingis lite.
Sesil Karatancheva: Just for kicks, we predict a breakthrough.
First-round matches to watch
(There aren't many thanks to the 32 seeds ...)
Conchita Martinez vs. Henin-Hardenne: It's not often that two Grand Slam champs meet in round one.
Peer vs. Marion Bartoli: Two of the more unusual players stylistically.
Dulko vs. Sania Mirza: Two of the hotter young players in '05.
Maria Sanchez Lorenzo vs. Myskina: This could be the upset special.
Daniela Hantuchova v. Michaella Krajicek: Big chance for Krajicek, who successfully qualified for the main draw.
Doubles champions
Assuming full health, Paola Suarez and Virginia Ruano Pascual
Semifinals
Mauresmo vs. Henin-Hardenne
Schnyder vs. Venus Williams (Ed.: Due to technical difficulties, this pick has been altered.)
Final
