Clijsters to play despite injury

Former world number one Kim Clijsters confirmed on Saturday she will take part in the French Open, which starts on Monday. The Belgian star has been dogged by an injury to her right knee, but trained for an hour with home favourite Tatiana Golovin before telling reporters she was ready to compete.

"So far eveyrthing has been feeling pretty good," said Clijsters. "The last couple days I've been gradually building up my intensity my practise sessions."

"Today was the first time I played points. I practised with Golovin, I was still a little shaky." http://forum.sport.be/ubb/graemlins/uhoh.gif http://forum.sport.be/ubb/graemlins/crap.gif

Clijsters has never won a major tournament and has twice reached the French Open final. She was beaten by Jennifer Capriati in 2001 and compatriot Justine Henin-Hardenne two years later.

"I was feeling more and more confortable on clay then I had this knee injury," she said. "It feels like new start back from level again, you have to work your way in the tournament. Its a challenge."

The 21-year-old will have to ease herself into the tournament slowly, and confessed she is some way short of full fitness.

"Usually it takes two to five weeks to cure this kind of injury. I will play at 80% of my top form," Clijsters said.

She has been drawn to face a qualifier in the first round.

Well lucky for kim 80% of her top form is going to beat nearly everyone in the draw.

Notice how she avoids putting that left wrist to the ground. Good choice, Kim. Glad to see you are playing.

OH YES BABY!!! I smell this is gonna be a great Roland Garros...
Grand Slams are just better when Kim plays!

It's great that Kim is playing. I just wonder though. She knows herself better than anyone. She played the hard courts because she thought that it would be a less strain on her body. Even with that being the case she still was cautious and went back to Belgium to get an MRI just to make sure everything was alright. She also thought that the clay would be one of the biggest test to her body. It has been. Her shoulder was injured. Her knee is still not 100%. She hasn't done as well as she would like on clay. Justine looked like she was going to be ranked behind Clijsters at the start of Roland Garros 2 months ago but now that has changed. I just don't think Clijsters is looking at this slam as a contender but as a test just to see if she can hold up on clay for two weeks.

Good to have a full roster of top players (except Jen and Serena, two of the most recent RG champs).

Kim at 80% can still do enough damage. It'll be interesting to see how she holds up in real matches.
