French Open returns to ESPN

April 4, 2002

BRISTOL, Conn. (AP) -- ESPN and ESPN2 will air more than 50 hours of live coverage of the French Open under a one-year agreement announced Thursday.

The networks also will have about 20 hours of taped coverage of the May 27-June 9 Grand Slam tennis tournament.

The deal includes both women's semifinals and one men's semifinal. NBC will air the other men's semi and both singles finals.

ESPN aired portions of the French Open from 1986-93. The tournament was on USA Network last year

50 hours! Wow! That is so fantastic. :bounce: :bounce:

I'll have to wait and see before I get excited.

I can only hope ESPN shows equal time to both male and female players.
In my world that means more than Agassi on one day and Sampras on the other.

Didn't the Outdoor Life Network own the rights this year? Thank God ESPN bought them back, because I don't get the OLN channel.

ESPN IMO will be OK at the french in terms of male-female because most american aka Sampras are no good on clay. The only 2 who may advance past the 4th round are Andy and Andre, but andre is inconsistent in Paris and Andy may be too inexperiences to last the grueling 5 set 7 match journey that is roland garros.

I think Michael Chang and James Blake may surprise the ESPN network. Anyway I have a strong feeling that ESPN just may focus more on the women in their coverage. Just a feeling I have. Let's hope ESPN does the right thing.

All right! To hell with OLN! I don't have that channel and I think only about 10 people do anyway, so ESPN was pretty smart to get the rights. I know they will headline with Agassi, Rodick or Sampras everyday, but hopefully at least a couple of them won't get too far and we'll see mostly WTA coverage. ;)

I was kind of looking forward to actually watching the Outdoor Life Network. I've had it for a year and haven't watched it once. Oh well. I think ESPN will be better off with it, although I'm sick of Cliff Drysdale and especially PMac shilling the Davis Cup 24/7. "I saw Taylor Dent in the locker room and asked him about the Davis Cup....." Shut up already and talk about the tennis going on NOW!

great news!

Yay. I am really glad it got picked up. I was hoping they would just give it to USA, but ESPN will do. Yes I am a bit sick of Drysdale as well, but I enjoy Shriver and Fernandez. They are a bit wacky together.

Will OLN have any coverage still?

Yeah, Mary Jo is cool. Shriver is ok but can grate at me sometimes. Oh yeah, I may not like Drysdale and PMac but they are A LOT better than having to deal with Marv Albert during Wimbledon.

Woah listening to Marv Albert during Wimbledon made me nauseous. Sometimes Pam gets to me, but overall she's got some good observations and usually makes me laugh a couple times. Cliff and Patrick are OK I guess. Anytime any of them are annoying me I just hit mute. Just so I can at least see some tennis I'm happy.

I hope OLN will have coverage in addition to ESPN. I doubt that that would happen but it would be cool if they had coverage when ESPN's goes off. Like a relay or something. 70 hours is good but not enough!

Pam and Mary Joe are a great team. Pammy can get annoying sometimes, but Miss Mary Joe keeps Miss Pammy in-check.

I'm really happy to hear that ESPN will carry the French. For a while nobody was going to carry it because that OLN deal fell through and USA pulled it's offer.

but andre is inconsistent in Paris

Inconsistent. Andre has been in the finals three times and won once. He's been in the semis several times and made the quarters last year. How "inconsistent" is that? Only the players who are clay court specialists have better records than that and Andre is an all court specialist.

No coverage on OLN. The FFT was displeased with that deal because of their limited audience, so they cancelled it. (Apparently, the advertisers didn't think they could sell enough product to both of us.:))

Gosh, don't you guys enjoy Marv's commentary at "Wimpleton"? :p

Ugh. I dont get ESPN! But I get OLN, even though I never knew theyd be showing coverage. So I guess I'm stuck watching the TSN coverage, which consists of 2 hours a day, while I'm at school!!!!:fiery:
