View Full Version : Kelly Clarkson 'Behind These Hazel Eyes' Video Info

The fairy tale is over for Kelly Clarkson, at least in
the video for the third single off Breakaway, "Behind
These Hazel Eyes." If snipping a few dress straps in
the "Since U Been Gone" clip seemed a radical display
for that breakup power ballad, just hang on — there's
some really ominous imagery going down in this one.

The single almost didn't make the album at all,
according to Clarkson. "It had different lyrics in the
beginning," she said. "I ended up calling Luke [Lukasz
Gottwald], the writer, and we did a totally different
song to it. It's now my favorite song on the record.
Crappy relationships [make for] a good song."

The video was shot in Toronto in April with director
Joseph Kahn (Britney Spears' "Toxic," Backstreet Boys'
"Incomplete," U2's "Elevation"), with a concept
conceived by Clarkson. It begins with her outside a
cathedral wearing everyday clothing, then cuts to her
performing in a shredded wedding dress. Following in
the tradition of great wedding-dress wearers before
her — think Sade, Gwen Stefani, Mariah Carey — she
runs through a Tim Burton-esque forest filled with

Her memories begin to flash back as she performs, and
the wind whips her hair around. Like a deteriorating
old movie, the two periods of time collide, and we see
a wedding party gathering at a cathedral. When the
doors open, however, Clarkson looks down the aisle and
sees her man marrying someone else. After she
witnesses their vows sealed with a kiss, she escapes
into the forest, branches snagging her dress until she
falls into a muddy puddle. The dirt splashes on her
face, and her eyes remain unmoving for a moment.
Recovering her composure, she rejoins her band in the
forest and rocks out.

By the end of the video she eliminates any chance of
becoming a modern-day Miss Havisham. The wedding scene
replays, but instead of saying "I do," she chucks the
ring away, rips up the flowers and decorations and
knocks down several groomsmen who try to stop her from
fleeing the church.

Clarkson is well aware that this is her most intense
video yet. "The whole thing is a metaphor about a
broken fairy tale," she said. "You think everything is
going well, and then reality kicks your butt. It's
kind of a sad video, but it's going to be my best one.
It's real, and that's why people like me."

Clarkson didn't know that acting out emotional wounds
for the camera would result in some real ones. She
left the shoot with bruises all over her body and
still has a sizable green-and-yellow splotch on her
left bicep. She says that even with iron supplements,
she still bruises easily. "Look at that," she said,
gesturing toward the mark. "It was so much worse — you
have no idea."

She'll have to heal on the road, especially now that
it looks like she'll be touring for a while longer. Of
course, touring has its own perils: At New York's
Hammerstein Ballroom on Wednesday night, Clarkson
danced barefoot onto a small piece of glass, dodged
gifts being thrown on the stage and later battled the
elastic waistband on her long hippie skirt. She
thrilled the crowd with songs from Breakaway and
Thankful and spoke about the possibilities for another
emotional ride with her song "Because of You." That
track will likely be her choice for the LP's next

Do go if you get a chance. She is apparently trying to add more dates so be on the lookout for that. I am a member of her fanclub and they give away 15-30 Meet and Greet passes for nearly every concert. Unfortunately my name wasn't drawn for Houston. Maybe next time.

I like Kelly’s for two singles a lot! The new one will grow on me, I’m sure. I think this CD will follow in the footsteps of Pink’s “Mizunderstood” (sp?) and be a radio staple for a couple of years. I’m happy for Kelly. :)

May 3rd, 2005, 08:08 PM
I also like Kelly - in fact I am addicted to "BTHE" and "Because of you." I love those songs right now. Unfortunately we did not get tickets to her concert

May 3rd, 2005, 11:11 PM
Kelly rocks :worship: ! I am sure this video will be her best yet. She even said that she thinks it's her best yet. I can't wait to see it. :D

The "American Idol" alumna shows her vocal chops during her "Breakaway Tour."

April 29, 2005

Kelly Clarkson

The "American Idol" alumna displays vocal chops, if not yet interpretive distinction.

Wednesday, April 27
Hammerstein Ballroom,
New York

There seems to be no stopping the juggernaut that is "American Idol." Even as the television show continues to rack up torrid ratings, one of its more famous alumni, Kelly Clarkson, has embarked on her first solo headlining jaunt. It promotes her double-platinum album "Breakaway," which has made her the top-selling female artist of the year to date.

Like many of her contemporaries on the TV show, subtlety is not exactly this 23-year-old singer's forte. Although she possesses a technically strong and wide-ranging voice, at this point she lacks the modulation to make her singing truly interesting. Not that any of this mattered to the capacity audience, many of them teen and pre-pubescent girls, who happily waved their green joysticks for the entire duration of the show.

The singer began the evening in full-throttle mode, with guitar- and drum-heavy arrangements that wouldn't have been out of place in a rock concert. Although her edgier material demonstrates a desire to expand her musical parameters, it's on the quieter ballads that she shines. Highlights included "Beautiful Disaster," sung softly with fiddle and guitar accompaniment; the self-penned "Don't," which doesn't appear on either of her two albums; and an acoustic rendition of her smash single "Breakaway" (the show closer), accompanied by much hand clapping and singing along.

Clarkson's voice was nicely spotlighted in a midshow miniset with the band playing quietly while seated on stools. It featured several of the more soulful numbers in her repertoire, including "Thankful" and "The Trouble With Love Is."

Less impressive are her covers of several classics, including Janice Joplin's "Piece of My Heart" and B.B. King's "The Thrill Is Gone." Somehow, both seemed less than convincing coming from this youthful, perky performer.

Clearly jazzed by an enthusiastic crowd that she proclaimed to be the noisiest on her tour, the singer (whose favorite, oft-repeated expression is "Awesome!") momentarily was rattled by, but managed to recover from, a piece of glass stuck in her bare foot and a wardrobe malfunction involving a troublesome skirt.

The "Breakaway Tour" hits Los Angeles' Wiltern LG on May 18-19.

The concert was AMAZING! I can't type more right now because my boyfriend is asleep and I am a loud typer. I will come back tomorrow with a review.

May 11th, 2005, 10:40 PM

May 11th, 2005, 10:52 PM
Kelly just keeps on getting better and better. she truly is amazing.

The video is OUT! It is not supposed to be premiered for another hour or so but AOL went ahead and put it up somewhere thinking no one would really find it.

In order to listen to it right now go to http://music.channel.aol.com/ and then under search type in 'Kelly Clarkson' This will pull up her artist page. Click on the link "watch our all Kelly Clarkson video channel" or something very close to that. It will open up and begin by playing the video for "Since You Been Gone." Immediately after that video, and a small commercial, "Behind These Hazel Eyes" will play!

This is so clearly her best video ever. Wow. I was really moved by it. Enjoy!

Ah I love her..best American Idol to date..and at the rate the show is going probably the best ever..and Behind These Hazel Eyes is :hearts:..

May 14th, 2005, 03:33 PM
that video is brilliant

May 14th, 2005, 05:52 PM
i asked a question: is this a fucking ballad?

May 14th, 2005, 05:56 PM
Its more of a rock song. Along the lines of "Since You Been Gone." Why don't you watch the video and see/hear for yourself. :)

May 14th, 2005, 08:56 PM
This song and video rocks! Go Kelly! :bounce:

May 21st, 2005, 07:07 PM
Hey guys. Kelly set a new record on the Billboard charts. She became the first artist in HISTORY to have two songs in the top 3 of the Billboard Hot 100 airplay charts! Since You Been Gone is #2 this week and Behind These Hazel Eyes is #3!

May 21st, 2005, 11:39 PM
The single almost didn't make the album at all,
according to Clarkson. "It had different lyrics in the

Kelly Clarkson 'Behind These Hazel Eyes' - I absolutely love this song.

Jun 9th, 2005, 12:00 PM
She is the best American Idol because she didn't do all that love song junk that they force their winners to do :o

Jun 9th, 2005, 12:08 PM
I've really liked her last 3 songs. But in this video that I saw, her miming was about 2 seconds behind what was actually being sung :o

Jun 9th, 2005, 03:08 PM
 ummm, why is she more or less "stealing" the title of an old Limp Bizcuit song called " Behind Blue Eyes"? :o

Jun 9th, 2005, 05:58 PM
kelly rocks!i wish she was bigger over here in the UK so i could hear her more!my fave song is "you found me" its mine and my boyfriends song :D

Jun 9th, 2005, 07:04 PM
That video was really awesome, I loved it, absolutely unique.
