Russia is by far favourite, BUT Flavia can beat Anastasia and Francesca, when she is on (this year it is not happening so often  ) can beat both Myskina and Dementieva. I think russians could leave Myskina out and ask Petrova or Safina to play....

Russians Target Repeat Victory

Having waited 42 years to win the Fed Cup for the first time, Russia appear to be developing a taste for it.

With five players in the top 10, and with three current grand slam champions from whom to choose, the Russians go into this year's event knowing that they have a great chance of defending the title they won so superbly against France in Moscow.

And that, according to Elena Dementieva and Anastasia Myskina, is exactly what they intend to do.

"I think we have a very strong team and we have a good chance again this year," Dementieva said.

"We had to wait a long time to win it and maybe we can win it again."

Dementieva will lead Russia in their first-round tie against Italy in Brindisi, while Elena Bovina and Dinara Safina, ranked 14 and 37 respectively, will also play.

Though Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova has yet to make her debut for Russia, and both Myskina and US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova will be missing, Russia still have a formidable side for this tie. And when they are all fit and available, as Russian fans will be hoping is the case later in the year, they look even stronger.

They'll need to be at their best, though, since the United States, whom they could meet in the semifinals, are unleashing world number one Lindsay Davenport and the Williams sisters on the competition for the first time since 1999, when, incidentally, they beat Russia in the final.

However, not even the strongest American team in years appears to have unsettled the Russians.

"It's exciting to compete against the best players," Dementieva said.

"Of course we have to play Italy first but if we get through that we will maybe play the USA, and then hopefully we can win that too."

Myskina, who beat Dementieva to win the French Open last year, said Russia's strength in depth was helping them build a team which could dominate the event for several years.

"It's tough, because we have so many players and they all want to play singles, so you don't want to sit on the bench," she said.
"But there's a lot of competition between the Russian girls and it's making us stronger."

Their victory over France in last year's final proved a huge success with the people in Russia, Dementieva said.

"I think it meant a lot," she said. "Most people in Russia don't really know how the WTA Tour works, they really just know the Olympic Games and team events, so the Fed Cup is very important there."

Dementieva, who also lost out in the US Open final last year, was not part of the team that beat France in the final, and said she was delighted to be back.

"For me it has always been a very important tournament," she said. "I participated in the Fed Cup for almost all of the years since I started playing, except last year. I always said, I am ready to play whenever and wherever.

"Now I am in the team again and I'm very excited."

Safina Chosen for RussiaThe draw for the Italy v Russia World Group I first round tie has been made in Brindisi. Dinara Safina will make her Fed Cup debut for Russia in Saturday's first match against Francesca Schiavone. Despite being injured, Flavia Pennettta still turned up to support the hosts, who must be starting to think they have a chance against a weaker Russian team than expected.

Safina Chosen for Russia
The draw for the Italy v Russia World Group I first round tie has been made in Brindisi.

Francesca Schiavone (ITA) v Dinara Safina (RUS)
Tathiana Garbin (ITA) v Elena Dementieva (RUS)
Francesca Schiavone (ITA) v Elena Dementieva (RUS)
Tathiana Garbin (ITA) v Dinara Safina (RUS)
Tathiana Garbin/Francesca Schiavone (ITA) v Elena Bovina/Elena Dementieva (RUS)

Defending champions Russia have travelled to the port city of Brindisi to take on Italy in the opening round of the 2005 Fed Cup. Russia, who defeated France 3-2 in Moscow last November, have had nearly six months to savour their country’s first-ever Fed Cup win. And, with eight women in the current top 20, Russia has the tools to dominate this competition for many years to come. A first step on that road would be a victory over Italy this weekend, but the Italians at home could be difficult to defeat, even though they will play without two of their top three players.

Italy’s No. 1 and best Fed Cup player in history, Silvia Farina-Elia will turn 33 next week and has retired from Fed Cup after a very successful nine year career. Brindisi-born Flavia Penetta, a crowd favourite here, has also had to pull out of the tie due an injury sustained last week in Charleston although she was on-hand today to support her team at the official draw.

Italian captain Corrado Barrazutti has chosen Italy’s No. 2 player Francesca Schiavone to lead the team and she will open the tie on Saturday against Dinara Safina, who makes her Fed Cup debut for Russia. Safina, who will turn 19 next week, was a surprising choice for Russian Captain Shamil Tarpischev as she is ranked 24 places lower than teammate Elena Bovina. But the young Russian, sister of Australian Open champion Marat Safin, seems relaxed and ready to play. Second singles for Italy will be played by No. 66 ranked Tathiana Garbin who will face the world No. 5 Elena Dementieva in the final match on Saturday.

On Sunday, Dementieva, with an 11-3 record in Fed Cup, will take on Schiavone in the opening match followed by Tathiana Garbin against Dinara Safina. Dementieva is making a return to Fed Cup having not competed since the 2003 quarterfinals and seems eager to be back and in good form. For Sunday’s concluding doubles, Italy has nominated Garbin and Schiavone while Russia has nominated Elena Bovina and Dementieva. The nominations for Sunday can be changed according to Fed Cup Rules.

The weather could factor into the weekend as the heel of Italy has been experiencing cool, windy and wet conditions all week, but the forecast is more promising for the weekend for the good crowds that are expected on both days.

While Italy has home court advantage at the Circolo Tennis Brindisi, the red clay surface does not disadvantage Russia’s women whose depth and skill make them difficult opponents wherever they play. Last year's Roland Garros champion and world No. 6 Anastasia Myskina was set to lead the Russian team, but, like Penetta, she suffered an injury in Charleston that forced her to withdraw from the tie on Tuesday. Surely the pressure of defending so many points at Roland Garros factored into her decision but there was no suggestion of any hard feelings among the Russian squad here in Brindisi.

“Both teams are without some of their top players,” said Russian Captain Shamil Tarphischev. “But both teams are strong with good players and the tie will be very competitive.”

Whatever the surface, the Russians can field a formidable team including Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova and US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova. Although Sharapova has not as yet played for Russia, she has indicated that she will make herself available for future ties and both she and Kuznetsova have better records on fast surfaces.

This is the third meeting between the two nations with Russia leading the series 2-0, but the nations have not met since 1980. Russia won its only Fed Cup title last year in Moscow, but lost in the final on four other occasions (1988, 1990, 1999, 2001). Italy’s best results are two semifinal finishes in 1999 and 2001. The winner of this tie will play the winner of the USA v Belgium match taking place in Delray Beach this weekend and, whether the winner is Russia or Italy, they will have home advantage for that important semifinal tie.

The 2005 Fed Cup first round marks the first year of the new format, mirroring the home-and-away format that has proven so successful in Davis Cup. The final has also been moved inside the WTA Tour calendar to the week following the US Open, a step that has allowed the Tour with the help of the ITF to shorten the season by two weeks.

“We look forward to a positive future for Fed Cup,” said ITF Executive Vice President Juan Margets who is in Brindisi for this important first round tie.

“This is the right format for Fed Cup and we are confident that, over the next few years, we will see this competition restored to its rightful lustre. Understanding the demands of the long season, we were also delighted to be able to work with the WTA Tour to shorten the season for the benefit of the players.”

I agree, what he's she like 8-0 against her???

Elena B is 8-2 against Fran winning their last four meetings so it is a bit odd Dinara's playing instead. Maybe because Fran easily won their only meeting on clay last year in Warsaw.

Too bad Silvia decided to hang up her sneakers in Fed Cup play. Italy would have a much better chance with the top Russians stars absent. They can win but it will be difficult. Fran has not played for a while and Tax has not been in the best of form. Hopefully they'll find their games this weekend.
Also, why was Roby left off the team? She's Italy's best doubles player, unbeaten in Fed Cup play. Strange.

Anyways, good luck to the Italians. :hearts: :hearts: :hearts:

No, Lena D needs to do her job three times - if she wins both her matches and the doubles with Lena B, Russia wins. If Schiavone can beat Lena D as well, Russia are suddenly in a bit of trouble. That said, Italy don't have a great doubles team - they don't have their doubles specialist Vinci around, so I think Russia ought to take the doubles whatever happens.
