I am at the Family Circle Cup every day of every year from sun up until sundown.....I will try to post as much as I can on the away from the media matches
.

During Qualifying rounds I saw some future super stars.

There were three in particular and one fourth one who is perhaps just slightly less spectacular.

Shahar Peer
Galina Voskoboeava
Sanda Mamic
and the slightly less spectacular but great nevertheless - viktoriya Kutuzova. I really didn't get to see enough of her though, she may be just as spectacular, but I just didn't think she moved as well as the other three.

Don't be fooled by the fact that Sanda Mamic didn't qualify.....she is Very talented. She must of hit at least 10 aces with a fast and well placed, lefty serve....very competitive, very sharp ...

mainly fatique at her young age seemed to be the problem. She clearly dictated the match versus kristina brandi. Brandi was like a back board though, and wore down the youngster from time to time. But it won't be long before this is a top player.

Same with Voskoboeva. Very talented - very accurate shots. Line after line after line she hit all day against domingues lino. She did qualifty so i will definitely watch her tomorrow.

Shahar Peer, is pretty much a well known "unknown" hehe. So If you haven't seen her yet, keep your eyes out....but most people do know what she will be doing in the near future.

I was just very impressed by those three in particular, but Kutuzova is also very talented.

---------------------some random notes-------------------------

Also for Seda Noorlander fans...she had the misfortune of player Peer in the Q's, but she looked really good for the first set (which she won). Her shots seemed to be in form.

Laura Granville fans --- she looked pretty good the first round of q's....she dug in there and fought for every point. Of course she does not have a lot of offensive weapons...but she is certainly a fighter.

I did see Justine walking around, but i didn't get to see her practicing.

I did get to catch some of Dementieva....she looked good.

Tathiana Garbin looks very fit this year. She has really gotten pretty leaner and more muscle definition.

Its a shame that Pennetta dropped out, because I have never seen her play in person.

well i will hopefully post some more from main draw action. Gotta get some rest for another full day (oh goodness and then tuesday night matches begin...so my days will be very long!)

If you get a chance to see Marie-Eve Pelletier play, would be very appreciated! And btw, i saw Galina V play few times, and i jsut think you saw her in a great day, cause the times i saw her she ahd nothing spacial, only ok groundstrokes!

Yeah i thought of that too....in all of the cases of the 4 girls but especially hers because she was hitting lines all day long!.....so that might have been a special day.

I did see pelletier briefly...but i will make a special note to check her out for you..and i will try to get a picture for you too.

Are you going to Shahar-Vaidisova match today?

I was really impressed with kutuzova. I saw Marie Eve play her first Q match(which she won) and she hit some impressive shots, but I don't think she is going to do anything big in this tournament. Best of luck to her tho

I did get to see shahar v vaidislova today.....I am even more impressed with her even though she lost. She won the first set nicely.....let vaidislova back in the second set though. Then in the tie break vaidislova went up 4-1. Shahar came up with some real nice stuff to get ahead again and even have match points....i think she ended up losing the tie break like 10-8 or something...and that may have taken the wind out her sails on that day.
But I saw her later and she looked fine about it.

Unfortunately i could not watch any of the voskoboeva match....i had to do some stuff for the tournament. Anyway...her match had to be moved to a practice court due to a problem with the clay on the court 5. Well...i sure would have liked the opportunity to reevaluate her.

I watch a portion of the pelletier match and got a picture...it might not be a great picture....but luckily she is still in...so i will post it later...and hopefully get another picture. i have to get up at 330am to do some errands for the tournament again....so i cannot post it tonight though. Her match was a little weird, both players would hit a nice shot and then the next into the net. I didn't see the third set...so maybe she ironed out some stuff.

Justine looked good. She missed a few shots...but she went for them anyway...so she should be in full form in no time.

I will check out silvias match....i caught some of garbins today also...not her day at all today. She missed a lot of stuff.

Randriantefy also....she played well for most of the match....but would all of the sudden try some low percentage stuff on huge points (like set point against her in the first she tried tentative drop shot from the base line) Well...there will be other days for Dally.

And Tathiana Garbin has been horrid this year :( But at least her physique has improved then.

Think Tathiana must be getting nervous about all those points she has to defend at Roland Garros. Let's hope she gets back to winning ways soon.

Okay...i will try to get some drake pics

Today was very interesting. stay tuned zvonereva fans!

Okay...first I watched Razzano v Raymond. I must confess I am a Razzano fan, and this is the second time she has come to charleston. The first time was three years ago and she lost her second qualifier. this year she got into the main draw....but the same thing happened as two years ago. It almost feels like she gets "shy"...more than nervous....if she gets behind on some bad shots, it seems like things can unravel pretty quickly as if she just wants to get off the court. Thats too bad. She is fun to watch

For Raymond fans....as i said i pretty much was partisan ....but it seemed like Raymond wont go too far in the tourney the way she played today. but she had the crowd support in this one....i think Razzano can't handle that either.

Next I went to the stadium to check out Pierce. my oh my i never thought mary would get back in shape but she must be 30 lbs lighter than two years ago when she upset Myskina here. I don't recall seeing her last year....i can't even remember right now if she came here last year. Pierce is always a crowd favorite here. She got so much applause etc...but she is used to that here...we definitely treat her right.

Mashona washington played a good match....but Pierce looks really great. too good.

Next i skipped back to club court...where kostanic had taken the first set and had Farina Elia down 3-0 in the second. Well i don't know how silvia played the first set but down 3-0 she played very well....she came back and pulled ahead in the second....the rallies were long, the points were well played...balls that should be winners were run down.....it was a crowd pleaser. Kostanic finally pulled it out though.

Okay....match of the day....zvonereva v. Benesova...this is one of the hidden stories we don't get to see just looking at an online scoreboard:

About into the second game or so....i don't know what happened, and i don't know if anyone else does either because I didnt hear much chatter....but vera got ticked off about something. I could see her from where i was standing, but she pointed and said some things in russian to herself....and then got angry at the ball kids....and took the balls one by one and basically hurried her service and lost her serve at love.

She then started playing again....but many many many times during this match she would have continual outbursts of anger , tears and at changoevers on games she would lose she would throw something....the first few times a racquet...then later a water bottle...another time a towel....

well the play of these two players was EXCELLENT...this match was truly a classic....but that only mystifies vera's conduct even more. She continued to yell and cry and throw things until the crowd went completely against her. I was still finding myself clapping for her though...deep down i wanted her to win too.

the points were long and contentious....the standard of play was HIGHLY EXCELLENT....well....the drama grew and grew....advantages...deuces....ad...duece every point a battle....you could hear a pin drop during the drama....

okay....well...a couple of times some audience members clapped when vera hit the ball into the net....and she started to yell at them in english...about how ridiculous that was etc. everything she said was not audible....

as i mentioned i still wanted her to win....i thought everone has a bad day...and she is having hers in front of 3000 people standing room only on a small show court. But then she lost and she came to the net....and of course we are all living in the post schnyder hand shake era in charleston ( i think i saw patty in the clubhouse watching this meltdown take place)....benesova came to the net....and yes ....a handshake did occur....and then i realized....

that throughout this entire entire match....that was nothing but a huge tirade on the part of vera zvonereva....and huge drama....and nerves and long points of excellent play with huge moments at stake....i realized that benesova had not once gave a grimmace...a loook of dismay...or enjoyment....or anything....she was graceful in her win....she kept focus....

and it wasn't until the end of the match....when she got a huge standing ovation that lasted a minute or more....that i realized the right person won. Sometimes i am a little slow!!!!

okay...anyway...that was a weird thing...maybe some zvonereva fans know if this is her history....she has always been charming in charleston though.

dementieva...looked great. jidkova played well...dementieva too good.

i didnt stay for the second night match because i am soooooooo tired.

more tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!! i love this week every year!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"post schynder handshake era in Charleston"

I like Vera alot; but there she goes again, being way to harsh on
herself. She's got to learn that it's not going to be perfect or right
everytime. It's ok to play ugly and still win or play good, and somehow
lose the advantages. I'd wish she grow up or hire some help to
do something about the angst.

Great report. :)

Apr 13th, 2005, 11:29 PM
Okay....it looks like rain...and/or thunderstorm, so i skipped the night session, which may not take place anyway.

so here is what happened today:

First up I went over to the stadium...Groenefeld v Sugiyama....this was the first time I have seen Sugiyama play in person. I saw a bit of Groenefeld earlier in the week. Nothing much to report. Not a high level of play, not a poor level of play....nothing spectacular. Just two baseliners rallying and unforced errors. Certainly no drama. But it was entertaining anyway because ...well...i guess because we love tennis.

Secondly....i went over to the club court to watch Schnyder v Marrero. I am a huge huge schnyder fan. So if she is playing that is where I will be....UNLESS she is playing at the same time as Shahar Peer...in which case i would have to go back and fourth. but i digress.

The weather was beautiful....sunny warm....birds were chirping...and all was right with the world. Patty Schnyder was playing some good tennis....her husband is here this year so maybe this helps her focus....because she didn
t have any of those "patty schyder mental timeouts" during the match. She played some solid tennis.

She was ever crafty........but what is up with that drop shot? 4 years i have been watching her play here....and 4 years she has taken several attempts at drop shots each match from wherever...and the ball will just hang in the air about 3 feet over the net. Well anyway some of them worked on Marrero today.

The crowd was very very very patisan towards patty. I guess everyone has made up. I think this whole incident will only serve to endear her more to charlestonians.

well...she also got some extra respect when during one point....during the last game of the first set........it was advantage marrero to win the game and stay in the set....Patty drop shotted her....Marrero ran in and retrieved and also did a drop shot........Patty retrieved and put up a sweet lob....Marrero tried to turn and run and wrong footed herself....completely spilling onto the ground.

She lay there on her back for about 10 seconds...and Patty walked up to the net and said "are you okay?" well....the crowd even applauded that.

anyhoo...that didn't stop marrero from trying to take a page out of conchita martinez's book...by trying to get into patty's head by stalling on big points. But ...well...it just didn't work today. SWEET VICTORY FOR PATTY!!!!!!

okay....i swung by Kostanic and LL Stroykova....but kostanic had this one so well under control that i left that one quickly

hmmm then at some point i went back over to club court. Pierce was leading llangostera vives 3-0. Then the first thing i heard as i walked over...
"the trainer has been called to court"...followed by "MS. Pierce will be receiving a medical time out off the court" i left....came back later....pierce's thigh again the problem....all taped up and now she had no mobility. I guess the writing is on the wall that at 30 her body will continue to be her biggest adversary......she was fit and playing so well.

Lindsay v. pelletier....not much to report....i did take a couple of pictures of pelletier i will post. But the match was over very quickly.

I also did sit in on some of her fabulousness fabiola zuluaga and Kutuzova. Well this girl is very deceiving. She is sort of small in stature...certainly next to zuluga....and she seems so unathletic compared to so many other players.....but something is good about her game....and i am not sure what it is just yet. She had no trouble at all with Zuluaga....and the fabulous one was not playing poorly.

Match of the day.....Nicole Vaidisova v Myskina. Well lets face it red is the new pink and ...Vaidisova is the new Sharapova. This girl is good. And she is about 16 only. But I am not sure this match will gauge where myskina in her struggles. This is because the first set was played in warm and sunny conditions for the most part...the temperature steadily dropping though. But by mid second set the winds were howling....the air was cold and thunder was rumbling and lightening was seen in the not too far distance ( which hastened my departure from the aluminum bleachers!!!!!)

So by the third and deciding set the weather was quite bizarre...and so i really don't put to much stock into this result for either player. Except to say that Nicole Vaidisova is no pretender. She is a top ten player......it is just a matter of time.

In fact there are a few current top 20 players that ought to start looking for new jobs..because that action i saw this week indicates that they will be kicked out of the top twenty real real fast by some teenagers. You know who you are....no need for me to spell it out.

okay...i will now go and retrieve some of the pics and post them up here...i have pelletier and drake...and i am not sure what else...let me go see.

yeah i saw it too - Benesova and Vera were such a contrast! It was the best match of the tournie through the first three days, with a huge overflow crowd watching on the Club Court. Vera played awful on her match points, hitting three errors nowhere near the court.

Iveta suffered an atrocious out call on Vera's baseline to go down 4-1 in the third, but she didn't even bat an eye over it.

Was a great win for Benesova but i still think her style is a bit limited and she is going to have a tough time beating the better players on a regular basis.

There was an article in the Charleston paper today about how Patty's bad sportsmanship in the Conchita match overshadowed her great play at the tournie last year... :-(

Patty was playing sort of an average match today (Wed), missing a bit too many backhands, until 3-5 in the second set. She was down 2 set points at 15-40, and played two pretty good points to get it back to deuce, and then suddenly her forehand caught fire and she opened up this enormous gap between herself and Marerro in what had been up to that point a rather even, humdrum and on-and-off quality match. In those last four games Patty was in classic form - a surprise kick-serve ace wide on the deuce side, a drop shot followed up with a volley into the open court, a Houdini-like backhand pass down the line, and several inside out clean forehand winners eliciting catcalls of admiration from the audience - as well as the trademark Patty clay-court defense and scrambling. There were some classic examples of Patty hitting the kind of mind-boggling shots that just leave other players shaking their heads in disbelief.

well....

I am not one who enjoys the cold wet air. So I really didn't pay that close attention to anything other than the Schnyder match.

Lets just say the conditions were less than ideal for any of the players today and i sympathize with them having to go out there....cold, wet...windy. gross.

Schnyder played alright...nothing great...she didn't need to play great against Koukalova today....I have not see Koukalova before...but she would not play professional tennis if she usually played like she did today. Schyder opted to just keep the ball in play and let Koukalove make unforced error after unforced error. Basically until the match was over....which happened very quickly.

Jelena Kostanic v. Nadia Petrova........again...the conditions were less than Ideal. Both players wore spandex pants, and petrova even wore an additional layer of a long sleeves pandex shirt under her tennis shirt. There were some really good points thrown in this match, but really a lot of unforced errors too. Kostanic double faulted on match point. She had some sweet gems of back hand winners though.

Shinobu Asagoe v. Nicole Vaidisova....well...Asagoe played pretty well especially in the first set....but Vaidisova did not play so well until her back was against the wall. Then she started picking up her intensity. I didn't see the third set but i was pretty convinced she had upped her level enough to win. I didn't realize it would be so close in the third or maybe i would have stayed around. But i think by that time Venus was getting beaten on center court and I kind of wanted to keep an eye on that too.

Justine vs Benesova..again...another gross match. Not much in the way of competitive matches. This one was unwatchable. Benesova did play very very horribly. I snapped a couple of pics and walked away..........i could not bear to see the match. It was just one unforced error after another. There was nothing Benesova could do right today and that is never fun to see on center court.

I finally realized that i was miserable , the players were miserable and that Dementieva would kick some serious @#%& so i decided to go home and rest because I will need all of my nerves about me for the Schyder match tomorrow.

I didnt get a pic of Srebotnik...even though i went over to her match to see her win.........But i figured she will be back tomorrow . She did let out a big scream after she won match point!

i don't think Koukalova was that bad, it was more that Patty made her look bad, which is something that Patty does brilliantly to her opponents when she is in form, especially on clay. Koukalova came out on court as a confident looking player with a couple of good wins behind her, and within a half hour, Patty had reduced her initially impressive-looking game to rubble. It was like Ali doing the rope-a-dope.

Okay......this is friday -- quarterfinals.

Sadly, I arrived too late to watch the golovin v petrova match.

then presumably most people saw the televised version of the davenport v henin-hardenne match, and if not have probably read about it by now...so i will skip that one.

Katarina srebotnik v Elena Dementieva...well....all i can say is that a year after working on her serve since it broke down under the pressure of the french open final.....ouch....elena's serve can still really let her down. In the local paper she had been quoted as saying that her main objective was to work on her serve and this meant going for her second serves -- she might not win the point but this is what she would do.

well.....she did do that at first, but during key points she would double fault and she began to back off of that strategy when things got really tight. She would basically just dink the second serve in. It did work for her today against Srebotnik....but hopefully things get better for her so she can win a slam one day.

Srebontnik played pretty well. She played some nice points and hung in there until the end. It was a pretty enjoyable match.

After match point....Elena let out a loud scream and sunk to her knees in jubilation. I would not be surprised to see this in tomorrows paper.

The Morariu/Pierce v Martinez/ Ruano Pascal match was full of good sportsman ship...and good play. These players seem to genuinely all like eachother. At one point, the players over ruled the line judges and a point was replayed. Also....on the point before match point....Morariu fell on the court....and Pierce quickly went to see if she was okay....and then ran to get a towel for her........and Martinez and Ruano Pascal both came up to the net in concern. There were also smiles exchanged among the players through out the match. It was nice.

And of course I waited all day to see Schnyder v Vaidisova. Well.......Schnyder really was a handful for Vaidisova. In the first couple of games Schnyder would take the pace off of Vaidisova's shots........but her balls were landing a bit too shallow. But as soon as Schnyder got her rythmn and sent looping balls back to the baseline....Vaidisova would not know what to do with them. The looping balls kept Vaidisova busy in the back court trying to adjust and Then Schnyder would drop shot her or hit a nice angled winner. I don't think patty missed one drop shot this match.

It was sunny and mild for most of the day....the night matches though...it was cold.

I have a few pictures of today i will post

*****This message is for Vogus if he comes back to this thread********

You need to remember to turn off the *remember me* function when you log in from the Bell South tent....I came to check a pm and it automatically logged me in as you. Since I'm a grown up and not crazy I of course logged you out but it could've been anybody. :wavey:

Okay........last day of posting since the final will be well covered.

The 1st match Golovin v Henin-Hardenne was televised so i will skip.

second match......the Schnyder v Dementieva was surely a good match. Espn was filming it too....i guess it may show up in case of rain or something. I stood next to the espn booth during the whole match so i could have a good seat and that was pretty cool because I had the benefit of watching replays etc since the booth is all glass.

Dementieva looked surprisingly relaxed throughout the match. She smiled when she made some silly errors.......let out of few nice screams also.

Schnyder had it going on in the first set and it really looked like she was going to walk away with this one. Elena's serve was not as bad as yesterday's, but it was showing some weakness , enough anyway for a player of schnyder's caliber to take advantage of. First set in the bag 6-3 for Schnyder.

Second set.......dementieva serving......down 0-40. Well......all of the sudden the momentum shifted in my opinion on one single point. Dementieva hit a ball to the baseline and Patty was there, but she was so sure it would go out...she just simply didn't play it and started to walk away.........doh! ball was in!.....If you watch Patty long enough you know something like this can irritate her to no end. She proceeded to hit a couple of unforced errors and gave Dementieva her service game. Then Patty lost her own service game.......and eventually her temper to some degree.

Then at one point she questioned a service line call (dementievas serve if i recall)........and she walked over to the net to check the mark......the ref came out and confirmed the ball in. She still disagreed and waived her hand dismissively at him.......and a small rumble of boos ensued. I cringed. I really didn't want to see her lose it.

well.........she went back to return service and nothing got out of hand. In fact most fans started ardently supporting her just to calm the situation of those few rouge booers as if to apologize for their rudeness.

anyway......Dementieva went on a roll......she was on her game big time. She would just get a hold of Patty's looping balls and lean into them like she was a clean up hitter for the yankees. There was nothing Patty could do on this day.

If elena plays like this.........she will win tomorrow.

I will put up some more pics...........i can't wait till next year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

During the match Patty hid Conchitas lucky ball in her skirt and didnt give it back, and at the end she put her hand out to shake Conchi's hand but pulled it away at the last moment, and called her a 'disgusting bitch' :o
