I think Tati can take down Venus. It depends on which Venus shows up and how well Tati plays. Not likely but possible.

This seems to be a tough but interesting draw for Tati.

First round is against Frazier who's a good player and just missed out on being seeded. Then second round against either Raymond, who won easily last year at AO, or Razzano, who had a good week at Amelia Island.

I'm hoping for at least a third round result and a match against Venus.

Seen on the Family circle cup's web site

Tatiana Golovin

Will the 2005 FAMILY CIRCLE CUP be lucky for the 13th seeded Tatiana Golovin? As the seventeen year old French youngster makes her FAMILY CIRCLE CUP debut this week, she hopes to continue her forward march through the rankings.

2004 was a major breakthrough season for Tatiana. After only her fifth Sony Ericsson WTA event, she jumped 200 spots in the rankings by knocking out two seeded players as a wildcard entry in the Australian Open.

Tatiana reached the fourth round in both the Australian Open and Wimbledon. She started the year ranked 345 and by year’s end she was ranked 27th and was also named as the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Newcomer of the Year. Tatiana is currently ranked 25th in the world.

Tatiana was born in Russia but her family moved to Lyon, France when she was 8 months old. She is a member of the French Fed Cup team which made it to the Fed Cup finals last year. At age 16, Golovin, along with fellow Frenchman Richard Gasquet (age 17), won the Mixed Doubles Championship at the 2004 French Open becoming the youngest mixed Champions in 23 years.

Tati has a lot to learn in doubles and she rarely plays so we cannot expect her to team up with a very vulnerable girl like Vera, and beat a top team like Shinobu and Katarina :(

her match against Raymond should be easier than the one they played at the AO. Tati was unexperienced and it was her first match (jr & pro) playing against someone who can serve and volley, she just was unlucky to draw Lisa. Right now and playing on clay, Tati is by far better than Raymond.

FAMILY CIRCLE CUP (Charleston, South Carolina, USA, WTA Tier I)
=================

TATIANA GOLOVIN [13]:
1r + Amy Frazier, 6-3 6-3
2r + Lisa Raymond, 6-4 6-3
3r + VENUS WILLIAMS [4], 7-5 6-4

-------------------------------------------
My innermost thoughts about Tatiana Golovin
-------------------------------------------

Tatiana's sensational victory over the defending champion gave me an excitement not usually associated with players outside my eternal fanship - and now for the second time, I'm seriously considering taking Tati on board (although I won't be making any fanship-decisions before Wimbledon - all I can say now is that it's "a distinct possibility").

The last time I watched Tatiana play was at Wimbledon 2004, when she was given a 6-2 6-1 lesson by Serena Williams in the fourth round - a match I actually rewatched on video just three days ago. Tati did play a couple of brilliant points in that match (I think particularly of the off-backhand winner she hit at - I think - 6-2 0-1 0/0), but nothing really to suggest she was worthy of my fanship, as Serena made her look like a complete lightweight - nothing to get that excited about in tennis-terms, although she had many years to improve and hopefully become a spectacular player.

The decision of whether and when to induct Tatiana into my eternal fanship is a very slow and complicated decision, and one that I'd have to be sure I was making for the right reasons (i.e. not just because I find her superficially very attractive, with her microshorts and her sexy grunt).

When I watch Tati play, I have to be amazed by her, like I was amazed by Maria Kirilenko for just three games at Birmingham 2004 - Kirilenko is currently running neck-and-neck with Golovin for the next place in my fanship (into which I have never inducted two players within six months of each other).

And who knows what impression other up-and-coming players such as Ana Ivanovic or Nicole Vaidišová might make on me, should I get to watch them for the first time at Wimbledon 2005 - I don't find them as attractive as Tati and Kiki, but I might have to convince myself that they aren't as talented, too! ;)

---------------------
Tatiana's match today
---------------------

Until today, Tatiana had been making quiet, steady progress in 2005 - reasonably consistent results, but unable to score a victory against a top-16 player, bringing into question whether she has the weapons or the nerve to beat the best and be the best.

Venus Williams is currently ranked #8, and is merely a shadow of the fearsome player who won four Grand Slam singles title and Olympic Gold in 2000/2001. Her motivation and commitment don't seem to be anywhere near what they were then, although there have been ominous signs such as beating Australian Open champion Serena Williams at Miami.

CEEFAX said Venus paid the price for an "error-strewn" match (particularly on her forehand according to Yahoo! Sports <http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/>), while Teletext described Tatiana's performance as "an efficient display".

---------
First set
---------

DISCLAIMER: I did not see the match myself (not having access to Eurosport).

I followed live point-by-point scores of Tatiana v Venus at http://courtcast.ids-emedia.com/fcc_cc.html - the match started at about 13:10 EDT.

Tati broke Williams in the first game of the match (thanks to three double faults), but Williams broke back for 3-3. Tati had to serve to stay in the first set at 4-5 (0/30), then with Williams serving at 5-5, she broke!

Tati serving for the first set at 6-5: 15/0, 15/15, 40/15 (2 set-points) -> 40/40, ad Williams (break-point), Deuce #2, ad Tati (SP #3), Tati won the first set 7-5 at 13:58!

----------
Second set
----------

The first six games of the second set went with serve.

Williams serving 3-3: 15/40 (two break-points), 30/40, broken!

This (a set and a break up) is when I started to believe Tati might actually win the match! :)

Tati serving 4-3: held to love :D
Williams serving to stay in the match at 3-5: 15/0, 15/15, 40/15, 40/30, held
Tati serving for the match at 5-4: 15/0, 15/15, 40/15 (2 match-points), TATI WON 7-5 6-4 at 14:36!!!

----------
Statistics
----------

Tati hit only 10 winners to 24 from Williams, but the major difference - judging from the statistics - was their second serves. Tati won 64% of the points on her second serve, while Williams won only 42% on hers, and committed 4 double faults.

Tati won the match by three breaks to one, and by 72 points to 66.

------
Quotes
------

Tatiana: "I have played against a few top-ten players already and, you know, I always kept losing in three sets. I think I was just more really ready to beat a top-ten player. I just really just stuck to my game. I was really solid and I didn't give her a lot of second serves to return. I really pressured her forehand, and I think that's was key."

Venus: "I just kept making error after error. It was a comedy of errors. It was windy out there and I just had a quick turnaround from the last match and my feet never moved. I just think mentally and physically, I'm just losing it. I just think I'm having a mental letdown from all the tennis I've been playing in the last four weeks, and I just felt pretty dead. But I'm alive."

------------------
Quarter-final draw
------------------

LINDSAY DAVENPORT [1] v Justine Henin-Hardenne
TATIANA GOLOVIN [13] v NADIA PETROVA [7]
PATTY SCHNYDER [8] v Nicole Vaidišová
Katarina Srebotnik v ELENA DEMENTIEVA [2]

Petrova could knock Vera Zvonareva out of the top ten by winning this tournament, so she must be stopped at all costs! Allez Tatiana!

As a Vera fan, I see parallels with the French Open 2003, where Vera beat Venus Williams in the last sixteen, then lost to Petrova in the quarter-finals.

-------
Doubles
-------

First round:
- Vera Zvonareva/Tatiana Golovin lt. SHINOBU ASAGOE/KATARINA SREBOTNIK [6], 6-2 6-2

I was so excited when I saw Bepa and Tati together in the doubles draw! The glamour of Tatiana, with her microshorts and her sexy grunt, combined with Bepa's understated beauty and flairsome talent, would surely make a delightful sensory feast for those lucky enough to see and hear it.

Another Teen Sensation Grabs Spotlight in Charleston

http://www.wtatour.com/global/photos_rx/golovin_6787_rx.jpghttp://www.wtatour.com/global/photos_rx/golovin_6785_rx.jpg

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Less than 24 hours after 15-year-old Nicole Vaidisova eliminated one of the Family Circle Cup's top seeds, another teenager has jumped into the spotlight in Charleston. Tatiana Golovin, the 16-year-old rising Frenchwoman and No.13 seed this week, upset defending champion Venus Williams to earn her first trip to the quarterfinals at Charleston, 75 64.

"I just really just stuck to my game, and I think I was really solid throughout the match," Golovin said. "I didn't give her a lot of second serves to return, and I really pressured her forehand, and that's what really was key."

Entering her match against Williams, Golovin had struggled in matches against Top 10 players. She dropped a three set match against Anastasia Myskina at Antwerp and then back-to-back matches against Elena Dementieva in Indian Wells and Miami.

"I've played against these top players, and I'm close to winning and I just never close it out," said Golovin of her previous close encounters with Top 10 players. "So today I learned from the mistakes I've done before. Obviously I think I handled it well, because players like this, you could be leading and then they play a few good points and then you're down and it's tight and it's 6-6 and it's a totally different match."

Williams faced a quick turnaround after playing in the evening session on Wednesday night and then the second match on Stadium Court the next day. However, Williams said errors in her game played more of a factor than fatigue.

"I just made too many errors," Williams said. "There's no easy explanation. I feel like I should have done the right thing, but I didn't."

Golovin now stands just one victory away from her first Tier I semifinal when she faces No.7 seed Nadia Petrova in the quarterfinals. Petrova won in straight sets in Thursday, defeating Jelena Kostanic, 63 63.

Vaidisova, who made headlines with her three-set victory against No.3 seed Anastasia Myskina in the second round, grabbed another Top 25 victory by coming back from a set down to defeat No.14 seed Shinobu Asagoe, 36 64 76(2).

"I don't really want to get satisfied," said Vaidisova on reaching the quarterfinals. "I'm in the quarters, so everything's great, but I have to still keep playing. I want to win every single match I go out there, so I have to get ready for tomorrow and just focus on my next match, but I'm definitely enjoying my matches here."

The Czech teenager will attempt to reach her first career Tier I semifinal in her next match when she faces No.8 seed Patty Schnyder, a winner on Thursday against Klara Koukalova, 64 60.

World No.1 Lindsay Davenport stopped a third teenager from finding a path into the quarterfinals, defeating 16-year-old qualifier Viktoriya Kutuzova, 63 61. Davenport has now won seven straight matches including her victory last week at Amelia Island.

Next up for the world's No.1 is a matchup with the player who held the game's top ranking just 12 months ago. Justine Henin-Hardenne advanced into the quarterfinals for a second straight event after defeating Iveta Benesova, 62 63.

"I think it will be a great opportunity for me to have another good test," Henin-Hardenne said. "It's going to be the No. 1 player in the world, so I think it's going to be a tough mission for myself, and especially the surface is very fast.

"I know that Lindsay loves to hit winners from anywhere off the court, so I'll have to play my best tennis, and I don't know if I'm ready for this. We'll see."

Davenport holds a 5-3 edge on Henin-Hardenne in career meetings, including a win in their only previous meeting on clay - a second round victory six years ago at Roland Garros. However, when it comes to playing on clay, Davenport knows Henin-Hardenne can play as well as anyone on Tour.

"Justine's a great, great player," Davenport said. "Obviously, she's has had her fair share of injuries the last 12 months and is trying to stage another comeback, so it's a very tough draw. I think on clay she's one of the best clay-courters that we have, so definitely a tough draw, and I look forward to the match."

This year's final quarterfinal matchup will put No.2 seed Elena Dementieva up against Katarina Srebotnik. Dementieva dropped just three games in her third round victory against Nuria Llagostera Vives, 60 63, while Srebotnik upset No.11 seed Ai Sugiyama, 61 46 61.

Me too, I wasn't sure how she was gonna do, but after watching her it's obvious she's an all-court player. She really moves well, which is obviously important on clay. I think she's got a good chance against JHH.

Found this :

Tatiana Golovin defeats Nadia Petrova

7-5, 6-3

Quarterfinals

DANNY KENDALL: Questions for Tatiana, please.

Q. What's your dog's name and what kind is it?

TATIANA GOLOVIN: Her name is Belle, and she's a Yorkshire, and she's five.

Q. How do you spell that?

TATIANA GOLOVIN: Just like beautiful in French, B‑E‑L‑L‑E. And she's five, and she's half French, half American.

Q. Tatiana, sorry to ask you about tennis, but ‑‑

TATIANA GOLOVIN: Yes.

Q. One day, one Top 10 player, another day, another Top 10 player. It's going pretty well.

TATIANA GOLOVIN: I know. I know. This really has been a great tournament for me. I'm really excited. You know, I think I played a really solid match out there. I really was really ‑‑ I stayed calm and focused, and I think that really helped me. And I think this is the level where I want to be playing and where I want to be winning these players, and I want to be in the semis and the finals of these kind of big tournaments, and even bigger ones, like the slams, so I'm just really excited for what's happening right now.

Q. Was your game plan today fairly similar to against Venus, just waiting for her to make mistakes?

TATIANA GOLOVIN: You know, I think Venus made a little bit more mistakes than she did, than Petrova did today. I was just really trying to fight for every ball and then when I had my chances, you know, take them and be aggressive. You know, I think I definitely got a lot of balls back, and you know, she made those unforced errors at the end, but I guess that's tennis. You know, you have to be focused until the end, so I think I did a good job of that.

Q. You broke her serve there in the first set, and then you double faulted. You seemed to pull your ‑‑ gave her the game. You took her to a 5‑4 lead, and then you double faulted and 5‑5. Did you pull yourself together there?

TATIANA GOLOVIN: I think I made a big improvement on my mental side. I'm really staying calm and focused out there, and I'm not getting angry at myself or getting down on myself, and I think that's really paying off because I'm just really playing point by point. And like I said, I think when I have my chances I try to take them, and that's really what helped me today.

Q. Can you talk about playing tomorrow, you know, in the semis? I know you don't know who you're going to play yet, but ‑‑

TATIANA GOLOVIN: Yeah. My first semifinals in such a big tournament, so I can only go there and try to play my best. It's definitely going to be two tough players, either Davenport or Henin. So just going to have to get out there and play the way I've been playing lately and play even better if I want to beat them.

Q. Have you played either of them before?

TATIANA GOLOVIN: No.

Q. How hard is it to play somebody for the first time?

TATIANA GOLOVIN: It's harder, but at the same time it's easier because I don't know what to expect and they don't know what to expect, so you can really kind of go out there and try to figure things out. Well, you know, if you already played somebody, then you kind of already know ‑‑ you know, you know what you're expecting, so it could be easier and harder at the same time. You know, Davenport is a great player. I think she's going to be making a lot of winners because she hits really hard. Probably Henin is going to have more of a clay court type of game, so it's just going to be really two different matches.

Q. Why do you think your success has been so good this week as opposed to other weeks? Is it something that's been coming?

TATIANA GOLOVIN: I think it's just experience. It's, you know, working hard every day, not getting down on yourself if things aren't working. So far this year I've played pretty well, and right now I'm just really playing better than I was, than I was last year, so I'm just, like you say, you know, I lost to Dementieva twice, to Myskina, so these are all great players that I've been losing to in three sets, and now I've just really kind of stepped it up, and I'm starting to beat them.

Q. Yesterday when you were interviewed, you were talking about the driver when you came over and he was telling you stories about Charleston. What kind of stories do they talk about?

TATIANA GOLOVIN: He was telling us just about, you know, how this city started, and what happened during the Civil War, and just little, you know, little things like that, just you know, keeps us interested and excited on our way here, because it's quite a little far ‑‑ you know, it's like 20 minutes.

Q. Are you staying downtown?

TATIANA GOLOVIN: Yeah. It's actually really nice.

Q. Have you been able to go downtown?

TATIANA GOLOVIN: Yeah. I go with my sister. We go have dinner there all the time, you know, bring it back to the hotel.

Q. Now, you're here with your mother, sister and dog?

TATIANA GOLOVIN: Yeah. And four girls.

Q. How much does that help you to have somebody on the road with you?

TATIANA GOLOVIN: I think it's great. I've been traveling ‑‑ my sister just started to travel this year, and my mom's probably not going to travel as much anymore, because you know, I have a nephew, so she wants to stay back in France a little bit more. And I think it's great. My sister's like my best friend, and she's always been there for me, and she's very supportive. And we actually brought the dog because we knew there was a puppy park, because otherwise it would be too difficult for us to take care of her, so it's good. It's a good tournament.

I had said that Tatiana had reached a plateau of expertise where she was unable to defeat top-16 players. Now she has beaten the #8 and #12-ranked players to reach her first-ever Tier I semi-final - and without dropping a set in four matches! :D

Golovin _*_*@*_*@ 6
Petrova *_*___*__ 3

Tati serving 0-1: ad Petrova (BP), Deuce #2, ad Tati, held

Petrova serving 2-2: 40/15 -> 40/40, ad Petrova, Deuce #2, ad Tati (BP), broken

Petrova serving to stay in the match at 3-5: 15/0, 15/15, 15/30, Tati won 7-5 6-3 at 12:51.

----------
Statistics
----------

Petrova was much more aggressive, with 27 winners to 10, 6 aces to 3, and a fastest serve of 120mph to 114mph. She also won 47% of points on second serve to only 32% for Tatiana. Presumably she must have committed many more unforced errors than Tati to lose this match (the statistics don't include UEs).

Tati won by four breaks to one, and by 84 points to 77.

------
Quotes
------

Tatiana: "It's my first semi-final in such a big tournament, so I can only go out there and try to play my best. I'm really staying calm and focused out there, and I'm not getting angry at myself or getting down on myself."

==========
SEMI-FINAL
==========

The second-best tournament of Tatiana's career came to an end with what UK Teletext described as "a high-quality match":
- TATIANA GOLOVIN [13] lt. Justine Henin-Hardenne, 7-6 (7/4) 7-5

Henin-Hardenne is ranked only #43 to Tatiana's #25 (Tati will break into the top 20 on Monday), but is only just coming back after a year of illness and injury. There really is no justice that Jelena Dokic and Iroda Tulyaganova are still struggling to make any real headway at all in their stuttering comebacks, while Henin-Hardenne and Kim Clijsters are able to return to the top level so quickly.

interview after the semis:

Tatiana Golovin - Interview 4-16
Date: 4/16/2005
Justine Henin-Hardenne defeats Tatiana Golovin

7-6 (4), 7-5

Semifinal Round

DANNY KENDALL: We'll take questions for Tatiana.

Q. Tatiana, obviously you're disappointed today, but you must be very pleased with the way you handled the whole occasion.

TATIANA GOLOVIN: Of course. You know, it's always tough after a match when you lose, but you know, overall I've had such a great week. Everybody was really great at this tournament, and you know, my family and I really enjoyed it here, so I really hope to be back next year.

You know, it's never great to lose. I hate losing, but you know, I've played against some amazing players and I've beat two of them, you know, so I'm just really proud of myself, and I hope I'll go on like this.

Q. What was the difference today, do you think?

TATIANA GOLOVIN: I think she just plays a completely different game from the other ‑‑ from, you know, Venus and Petrova, that you know, you really have to generate your power, because you know, she hits a lot of spin, she mixes it up; and you know, I think my serve really let me down, and I really didn't really get much free points off my serve, and I think that didn't help me at all.

And you know, overall I think she's harder to play on clay because all her balls bounce so high because of the spin, and you have to be there physically and really go for every ball and go for all your shots. And you know, it was a close match, and I think we had some great points, and the crowd enjoyed it, so I think that was really important, too.

Q. How deflating was losing, being at the tiebreak for one, and then that deuce game that went to deuce like seven or eight times in the second set? When you lose those, how much does that take out of you?

TATIANA GOLOVIN: Yeah. Well, in one way I guess it's good. She's the French Open champion, so that means I can compete with her, and maybe next time if things go better, I'll be able to beat her, so it's obviously positive. But you know, it's just tough. I guess it's another experience that I have to learn.

I haven't played against players like Henin much. I've usually played against other of the big hitters, so this is just a really a new experience for me, and I gotta learn from it because in order for me to win the French Open, I'm going to have to go through players like this, you know, who play with spin on clay and hard, so difficult to beat. So it's just really a good experience for me.

Q. Did you have a chance to speak to Richard Gasquet at all?

TATIANA GOLOVIN: You know, I called him yesterday, but I think it was too late already, but you know, I'm sure he's really happy, and I heard he lost today, so that makes two of us, I guess.

Q. Are you going to be playing together again in Paris this year?

TATIANA GOLOVIN: I'm not sure. We haven't already talked about it. Maybe you should end it on like a good win, you know.

Q. You showed a lot of intestinal fortitude, real desire to win, because you came back after some of those tough matches. Did you feel like you matched up to her when it came to the desire to win?

TATIANA GOLOVIN: I think so. You know, I think it is because, you know, I was up in the second, I was down in the second, and I was really able to fight through that, and you know, get my game together when I needed it. So I think, you know, obviously, you know, like I said, I beat some great players, so obviously I knew that I could beat her, too. It was just a matter of, you know, how well I was doing things, and like I said, I think my serve let me down, so ‑‑ but desire to win, I've always had that desire and now it's even growing more as I win those important matches. It just makes me want to play even better and win more, so...

Q. This is probably a very obvious question, but is the French Open your main ‑‑ would that be the one that you really want to win the most of all?

TATIANA GOLOVIN: I think it's a dream, you know. Of course, my dream would be to win the French Open, but it gets really crazy out there, so I guess I'm not going to say I want to win it too bad because it usually doesn't happen, so I'm just going to really take it match by match.

DANNY KENDALL: Thank you very much.

 i'm glad Tati can brush it off and laugh about the loss.

Andrewbroad, what are you trying to say in these post?? all of us here are fans of Tati, some for quite some time.

Okay, I'd better start by explaining what it means for me to be a fan of a player. It doesn't mean that I just support them casually, it means that I support them with the deepest level of commitment I can give, and I take an irrevocable vow to support them forever. I have only taken this vow for eight players since I started following tennis in 1992 (see sig).

As regards Tatiana, I am strongly considering inducting her into this eternal fanship of mine. But I have to be absolutely 100% convinced that I am prepared to support her at the same level as my current fanees for the rest of her career, before I put myself on the line and declare myself a Tatiana fan - and right now I'm only about 90% convinced. I find Tatiana extremely attractive and charming - I've even coined the word Golovinesque to describe girls who remind me of her - but I do not allow that to cloud my judgement of her tennis-qualities.

I have only seen Tatiana play at two tournaments so far: Birmingham 2004, which I attended myself and watched all her matches, and Wimbledon 2004, when I saw her third- and fourth-round matches (which I intend to keep on video forever, whether I do induct Tatiana into my fanship or not).

Regarding her tennis-qualities, I was impressed by her potential in those tournaments (particularly Birmingham), as she seemed to be quite a flairsome striker of the ball and an intelligent tactician. She hits a lot of winners by constructing rallies rather than sheer power. She has good command of depth and placement, and a good serve. But she can be sporadic, and I would like to see her hit with more power - without too many errors.

Tatiana is currently my favourite player just outside my eternal fanship, although she's now facing stiff competition from Maria Kirilenko, and what I see of Wimbledon 2005 could well decide which of these players (if either prove worthy) claim the ninth place in my eternal fanship.

Tatiana excited me tremendously this week, although I didn't get to watch any of the tennis from Charleston. So much so that I found myself following her scores with almost fanship-interest - so I thought I'd share my notes with you guys. It was a very positive step forward for her, and reaffirms my interest in her... but I won't be making any fanship-decisions until Wimbledon, when I next expect to see her - and her competitors for my fanship - on TV.

So, the next time I see Tatiana play, I'm looking to be amazed by her. If I'm going to induct her into my eternal fanship, I need to be able to say that she is brilliant, and to write an essay justifying why this is so (as part of the Tatiana Golovin biography I would write for my website, which has a big section for each of my eternal fanees). I'm not in a position to be able to do that for Tatiana yet.

So I'm sorry if I have offended anyone else's definition of "Tatiana fan", but given how seriously I take my eternal fanship, and how very sure I have to be before I decide to induct a new player into this fanship, I can only call myself a demi-fan of Tatiana at this time. I hope you can bear with me until my feelings become clear. But my current support of - and liking for - Tatiana is, by ordinary standards, really quite strong!
