ah well, the clay season is upon us. :)

Different season, same old crap about what Venus and Serena can't/won't do. I'm gonna take extreme pleasure in watching them both win tourneys during this clay season, and I am pretty sure one of them will win the big one, Roland Garros. It'll also be great to see Monica and Serena back in the top 5 where they belong.

Clay season is the most unpredictable of the year, so it'll also be fun to see who holds up to form... and who doesn't. ;)

Going to get the popcorn now. :D

Let the games begin!

Obviously I'm not a fan but I don't see anything holding them back on clay. Venus' loss to Schett was due to her less than par play.

With the power she has she can hit through it...

I mean, Mary won RG, Venus can also... maybe just needs to take pace off sometimes and go for angles.

Interesting about people saying Venus and Serena can't play on clay. People always (and still sometimes do) used to say that Jennifer Capriati could not play on clay, despite the fact that she won the Olympics on clay and last year won Charleston and the French Open. What does a girl have to do!!!

Because they have won as many RG titles as the Queen of Clay, Hingis. ;)

Guys, you cant predict what is going to happen during the clay season because there are no clay court specialists at the top of the womens game.
I give everyone about the same chance on clay, form will play the biggest part.
I think Justine Henin has as much chance of winning the French as the Williams' sister have.
I just hope Daniela can continue her Indian Wells form onto the clay in the next few months.
And because there are no dominant clay court players in the women's, I think a quarter final at the French Open isn't out of reach for Daniela. Her game is suited to the clay, just as much as most of the other power players out there.
At the end of the day, if the draw is favourable enough, anyone can win, but the form in the lead up events will be key in my opinion, and I think the winners of tournament like Rome and Berlin would have to be very confident in getting to the quarters of Rolland Garros.
I love the French Open, for some reason, I am drawn to the screen. In previous years, I have been very interested in only the Men's side, but this year, the Women's is looking just as good.

Good Luck to Daniela, Carlos Moya, JC Ferrero and I guess all the other players.
Just hope injuries don't ruin the tournament like it did in Australia to a small degree.

Good Luck at all, and lets hope for some entertaining tennis, who ever wins the tournament during the clay season.

Yep, now the fun begins.... Both Serena and Venus have had their best results on other surfaces, but no way can they NOT play on the stuff, neither will they not do well. I just can't see anyone dominating.

I think it's going to be a more interesting and unpredictable season than the hardcourts, with more Europeans looking to counter the American dominance (I'm not forgetting wins for Mauresmo and Hingis so far this year).

Bring it on....

You are right, moon. Now the real fun begins. I am hoping that the Williams show everyone once and for all what they're working with on clay. I have great expectations of them this clay season.

Let's get dirty.

here's your prize Bright Red

the best part about this year's clay season is that I will be able to see it all! The last few years I went to RG so it'll be a nice change of pace to watch the action from my living room couch.

I love it when V and S prove their detractors wrong, and I have a feeling we'll be seeing it alot this year, starting this clay season.:p

This is gonna be fun!

I was just wandering why a thread about the clay court season starting is full of people defending the Williams' sister chance at winning titles on clay?
The season is totally unpredictable....to tip a winner at this early stage is crazy.
I think it will be just as tough for any of the top players to win the French Open as it is for the Williams' sister.
I admit the part of there games that dominate on Hardcourts and Grass will be slowed down a tad, but to say they cant win on clay is silly.
But I am getting a tad bored of everyone saying I cant wait for them to prove everyone wrong, cause it seems that everyone think that they can win on clay.

But if people are going to talk like that, I'll join in.

I cant wait for Daniela to prove to everybody how good she is on all surfaces and to prove that she is as good as her performance against Hingis......God Bless Daniela on the Clay.

moon, you were so right about the season so far! :bounce::bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Serena broke all of her old clay records, and is now one of the top two favorites for RG!

The moral of the story: Never bet against the Williams Sisters--you'll only lose.

sartrista7

Bright Red - ahem. Insofar as there *is* a favourite for RG - it's been a wide-open clay season - it'd be Venus. And Justine would be behind her, not Serena.

Also bear in mind that past clay warm-ups have meant very little at RG - look out for Amélie if that's the case ;)

Bright Red

I see your point, but I disagree. I think it flows like this:

1. Serena or Justine (even, or perhaps a slight edge to Serena)
3. Jennifer

The German and Italian Open's are what I'm basing my opinion on (I choose to ignore past trends and lack of predictive value). Venus could, of course, win it all; but if things continue to go the way they have been, I'd be surprised.

sartrista7
May 22nd, 2002, 06:45 PM
But Amelia Island, Charleston and Hamburg are just as much clay events, aren't they? (Green clay's not THAT different.) Even with an early-round loss last year, Venus was joint favourite with Amélie (look where that got them) - she really is unbeatable if she puts her mind to it. Justine's had the best clay season overall, no question, but I have a nagging feeling that she and Serena may have peaked too early (a problem which has afflicted many players in the past, pre-RG: clay's a surface where you need to peak at the right time).
1. Venus
2. Justine
3. Amélie (as dark horse)
4=. Serena and Jenn (due only to the fact that Jenn's game improves exponentially at Slams, otherwise Serena would be way in front of her).

This is also the only reason I put Jenn at #3 on my list. (btw, I wouldn't mind if things turn out right based on your ranking ;). I want Venus to do well.)

But about peaking...

In 2001, Justine played 3 clay events before RG and she reached the semis in two of them. She went on to reach the semis at RG, too. I think that she's at an all-time high in terms of confidence and that this week's break will give her time to refresh and do well at RG.

Serena had no preparation and she went to QF's so there's no precedent for how well she might do. I think she is also riding an all time high level of confidence on clay.

Momo in 2001 might be viewed as an example of peaking too early. However, I don't think it's the case--there's something else going on with her. Amelie definitely has what it takes to win, but I put her behind quite a few others due to her nerves being out of control.

I think Serena will even play better next week because now she knows and proved she belongs to best on clay too :D

sartrista7
May 22nd, 2002, 07:19 PM
It's players like Venus and Martina who've peaked too early in the past - Venus in '99 and Martina in '00.
Serena and Justine definitely earned their QF and SF places last year, but between them beat zero top tenners to get there. Serena's toughest opponent was Nadia Petrova, still very inexperienced then; Justine's were Schett (she's better than Babsi full stop) and Lina K (who was about as nervous in that match as I've ever seen any tennis player). If we take those results to mean anything at all in the context of a top player, we might as well call Daniela Hantuchova and Iva Majoli RG favourites.
Justine - I don't know if she's peaked too early per se, but she's going into a Slam as a (not the) favourite for the first time ever. She's had problems with nerves before, but seems to be getting over them. It'll be very interesting to see how she reacts. She's more of a match choker than an occasion choker, though.
Amélie, on the other hand, is not a match choker. She's got no problems in closing out a tight match - hell, look at Aus '99 and the semi against Lindsay. But she *is* an occasion choker - coming into a tournament, not a match, as favourite, is fatal for her. That's why her nerves get out of control, not because she gets 5-2 up in a match. Given that no-one's likely to hail her as RG champion in advance this year, I think her nerves should be well and truly buttoned down. And if she finds her game - and it's something she can find very suddenly - then watch out everyone else.

I totally agree Moon, the clay season is always very interesting. Plus since it's all most over, everyone can see that Serena did Awesome!!! Oh and so did Venus. I mean a title and a final ain't to bad for a girl that's "no good on clay" LMAO.

Anyway I can't wait for RG. Oddly it's my fave slam even though neither Venus or Serena have won it yet :)
