Four players are viying for the #3 and #4 rankings at Roland Garros. It just so happens they play the same number of tournaments. And are ranked very closely once we subtract last years points.

3730 Martina Hingis -- -------------, ----------, Hamburg, Berlin, Rome
3421 Kim Clijsters --- -------------, ----------, Hamburg, Berlin, Rome
3314 Monica Seles ---- Amelia Island, Charleston, -------, ------, Rome
3271 Serena Williams - -------------, Charleston, -------, Berlin, Rome

* There's a rumor Kim might either/or Berlin and Rome. She'll fall to #5 or #6 if she doesn't play Rome. maybe worse, depending on Dokic, Mauresmo, Henin, Shaughnessy, Farina-Elia

For various reasons, the three players ranked below these four are unlikely to challenge them ranking-wise untli after RG.

2991 08 J.HENIN (form?)
2892 09 J.DOKIC (health?)
2651 10 A.MAURESMO (Defending 1200 points before RG)

* Let's see where this goes. I'm going to assume all these players make the SF's or so of anything they enter. Not much room for slip-ups. Everyone should get at least 200 points a stop.

04-08 Amelia Island - Martina drops 73 points. Monica plays.

03 3657 Martina Hingis -- (3730-73)
04 3514 Monica Seles ---- (3314+200)
05 3421 Kim Clijsters --- (3421)
06 3271 Serena Williams - (3271)

04-15 Charlestom - Martina drops 282 points. Monica and Serena play. Both shold pick up 200 points at least. Lotta good players here, tho. Winning will be tough. Still, at the end of this tournament, Monica should be #3, Serena #4.

03 3714 Monica Seles ---- (3314+200+200)
04 3471 Serena Williams - (3271+200)
05 3421 Kim Clijsters --- (3421)
06 3375 Martina Hingis -- (3730-73-282)

04-29 Hamburg (Bol) - Kim drops 83 points. Martina and Kim play.

03 3714 Monica Seles ---- (3314+200+200)
04 3575 Martina Hingis -- (3730-73-282+200)
05 3538 Kim Clijsters --- (3421-83+200)
06 3471 Serena Williams - (3271+200)

05-06 Berlin - Martina drops 170. Martina, Kim, Serena play

03 3714 Monica Seles ---- (3314+200+200)
04 3738 Kim Clijsters --- (3421-83+200+200)
05 3671 Serena Williams - (3271+200+200)
06 3605 Martina Hingis -- (3730-73-282+200-170-200)

05-13 Rome (and Madrid) - Martina drops 182 points. Monica drops 1 point.

03 3914 Monica Seles ---- (3314+200+200+200-1)
04 3938 Kim Clijsters --- (3421-83+200+200+200)
05 3871 Serena Williams - (3271+200+200+200)
06 3623 Martina Hingis -- (3730-73-282+200-170-200-182+200)

43 points seperate Monica, Kim and Serena between now and Roland Garros. Martina is only 150 points back.
If they all earn the same number of points, Kim will be #3 at RG, and Monica #4.
Recall also, the defending champs at the clay Tier I's are Capriati, Dokic and Mauresmo.
Obviously, winning 2 Tier I's would sew up a high ranking.

Who's #3 and #4?

It all depends!!!!
Monica has a great chance providing she's still not tired going to Amelia Island(is a week really enough?)
Serena doesnt really like clay but will still win a lot on it!
Clijsters has a good chance, depending on the arm!
Hingis has a good chance, providing she does well in the red clay season!!!

I go for Monica at #3 and Serena at #4!

But lest not forget, RG does not have to follow the rankings down the line. They can make acceptions for stellar play on clay. If they do that, Monica would edge Hingis who would edge Kim who would edge Serena. It'll be interesting to see how things roll out.

They probably won't. I read that RG never deviates from the world rankings, not even for the men.

But now that they seed 32 instead of 16 they may deviate from the rankings....

I voted for Monica & Martina. I just have a feeling that Monica will do some serious damage on the clay. And I think Martina will stay at #3.
