Second set

Capriati breaks Williams on the first point of the tiebreak and then pounds down a first serve to cement her advantage.

Williams breaks back but Capriati forces a volley error from her opponent to regain the initiative.

Williams again fights back and both players walk slowly to the other end at the changeover at 3-3 as they try to get their breath back.

Capriati goes for broke on Williams' second serve at 3-4 but lands wide.

A tentative shot from Capriati gives Williams the initiative and she whoops with aggression as she blasts a ball home to give herself two championship points.

A Capriati shot goes long and Williams shrieks with delight as she celebrates victory.
Capriati 5-7 6-7 Williams

Capriati goes 0-30 down, claims back a point but then sprays a forehand long to give Williams two break points.

Capriati manages to save both and a Williams forehand error gives Capriati set point.

Some wonderful retrieving keeps Williams in the set and she gets another chance to break but cannot take it and Capriati earns herself a second set point.

Williams saves that with a fierce backhand but the same shot lets her down on the next point, giving Capriati a third chance to take the set.

But Williams takes control of the rally and keeps her cool to put away a high smash.

Williams then squanders another chance to break before putting a forehand into the net to give Capriati a fourth set point, which she wastes with a double fault.

Another tension-filled rally ends in an error and Capriati has another set point but Williams saves with a huge forehand into the corner.

Capriati puts a tentative lob long and Williams has a fifth break point, which she converts with some aggressive approach play, followed by a smash.

The see-saw nature of the match continues with Williams struggling to hold.

Another unforced error gives Capriati a break point and Williams lashes a forehand wide to concede the game.

Capriati begins the game with a loose forehand to go 0-15.

Williams has a chance to make it 0-30 but nets a backhand volley.

Capriati puts the pressure back on herself with a double fault and then nets a simple forehand after a pulsating rally to go 15-40 down.

Capriati's first serve is firing well and Williams can find no answer, allowing the world number one to ease to a 5-3 lead.

Now it is Capriati who steps up the pace and goes for her shots but this causes her to commit too many unforced errors, allowing Williams to hold.

Williams is again erratic as Capriati holds with ease.

Capriati looks rock solid as she goes 0-30 up on Williams' serve.

But a 117mph ace from Williams brings her level.

She follows it up with another ace, which Capriati disputes - and another powerful first serve keeps Williams in the set.

Williams adpots an all-or-nothing approach and with two duff shots and three winners earns a break point.

But she fluffs the next point and Capriati restores her two-game cushion.

Williams manages to be more controlled with her play and holds the game comfortably.

Some powerful hitting from Williams takes her to break point but Capriati stays solid and saves it before clinching the game.

Capriati saves the first with an excellent first serve, the second after another marathon rally and the third when Williams nets an easy backhand.

Capriati then dumps a straightforward backhand into the net and Williams goes on to hold.

Williams strikes straight back to earn a break point, which she converts with a deep backhand which forces a Capriati error.

Williams begins the match with two backhands into the net but wins the next point by forcing the net and then serves an ace.

Williams has a game point but then concedes the next two points to face a break point.

And rifling backhand down the line gives first blood to world number one Capriati.
