In the world rankings dated 18/3 Straczy is still there (ranked 309). So, clearly no-one's told the ITF if she has got married!

Katarzyna Teodorowicz is a veteran polish player that I haven't seen for quite a while. I saw her winning a 25.000 $ Challenger in Barcelona in the mid 90's beating argentinian María Fernanda Landa in the final in 3 tights sets.

Glad she's back, she seemed very nice in the trophies presentation.

Teodorowicz played Fed Cup in the early-mid '90s for Poland. She was more in the era of Novak amongst the Polish players. Nice to see her still competing.

Mar 30th, 2002, 07:08 PM
In fact, that was in May 93' when Teodorowicz won in Barcelona after beating:
1st rd:???
2nd round: Miko Yokobori 6/4, 6/4
QF: Sabine Lohman(1) 6/2, 6/2
SF: Sandra Van der Aa 6/0, 7/5
F: María Fernanda Landa 0/6, 6/3, 7/5

Do you remember any of these names? The first seeds were Sabine Lohman, Angela Kerek, Marion Maruska and Neus Avila.

In first round players like Eva Bes, Gisela Riera and 15 year old María Antonia Sánchez Lorenzo all lost and in the second round
a certain Ángeles Montolio beat a certain Anna Smashnova ( what a match!!!) 6/3, 6/3.

By the way, Teodorowicz won the doubles too with Agnese Blumberga from Latvia I think (didn't she play in Barcelona Olympics with Lari Savchenko-Neiland, Eggy???)

Finally, I don't Know if that was a 10K or 25K tournie. Anyone has World of Tennis 93 to check it for me? Thanks

Thanxs, spotsyboy!
As a kid I used to go to all the challengers (sometimes skipping lessons!)I could since I have always loved the atmosphere in these litttle tournies and I keep all the drawsheets and stuff.

I was a ballboy some years in the Barcelona WTA tournament before it moved to Madrid :-( but my biggest "achievement" was being a ballboy during the olympics in 1992 (gotta tell you that the heat and humidity on court was extreme and the volunteers and players were dying down there but the expirience was sooooo cool - the final Capriati-Graf was excellent and although I wasn't on court we saw it live and was great!!!-)

spotsyboy
Mar 30th, 2002, 10:31 PM
I love the atmosphere at challengers too! It's sorta fun knowing that you may be watching a future tennis star! It's also interesting to see all the different faces of the players we would never get to see on TV or in the big tournaments. Some of them are incredibly talented but have other things preventing them from reaching the top (lack of decent coaches, lack of $$, motivation, etc.).
Unfortunately I'm missing Amelia Island this year (BOO HOO!!!) but i'll still be attending the two challengers nearest my home (Midlothian $25k and Harrisonburg $10k) this spring and summer.

spiceboy
Mar 30th, 2002, 10:54 PM
Have fun spotsyboy in Midlothian and I hope you can see all your faves!

I think that I will go on May to Tortosa for a 10.000 $ tourny (hope I can see Safina or Fraga there) and probably to Paris for some days and attend the French Open qualys.

Claudine v Anna Bastrikova from her site

Claudine was feeling the effects of the extremely high temperatures and knew some problems to get into the match. She lost her first service game and was led 0-2, before she was winning 4 successive games to lead 4-2. Anna fought back to 4-4, both players held their serves. At 5-5, Claudine got to breaking Anna's serve and finished the set 7-5. In the second set, she managed to rise the level of her game, to keep focused and to cut down her unforced errors. She was leading 2-0, got a second break at the score of 4-2 an won the set 6-2.

Like I said before their match,... Mi-ra would have had better chance against an European or American girl. Ka-Po just figured out that moon-balling to Mi-ra is a way to win.
Mi-ra used to win over Ka-Po Tong, Young-Ja Choi and Eun-ha Kim, but they just know the secret ( :o ) nowadays. :(

Yeah, better luck in ITF HOCHIMINH CITY :bounce: .

There is another player who hates moonballing : Wynne Prakusya. At the ITF Hochiminh City last year, both Shelley Stephens and Roberta Vinci went for it. Since Then Wynne has been working very hard on these kinds of balls and I would dare a player to try it again  .
