That was a shameful thing the DTB did. The Dutch version of it did exactly the same, for Raemon Sluiter. So idiotic

Ayu Fani replaced Romana Tedjakusuma.

Sandy Gumulya will not be playing [due to injury] but will still be on the team however Romana Tedjakusuma will be the "spare tyre" in case Ayu Fani declines the offer.

Any news on Widjaja and Prakusya? Will they play?
Prakusya is positive playing, and the last I heard from the news is that Widjaja is unsure of playing. Might only be playing in double IMO. However, since Sandy Gumulya is out, it is unlikely they'd play Ayu Fani because Ayu Fani and Indonesian Tennis Federation are not really on good terms, or Romana Tedjakusuma, just because they've never planned to play her at all. But who knows.

Angie will likely not be playing. The last news that I heard was that her injury acted up again and won't even be flying to Germany. Angie and her management will confirm with the PELTI (Indonesia Tennis Federation) by Sunday.

Seems like Indonesia are left with Wynne (slump), Romana (have not been playing for ages) and Ayu-Fani (injured). Germany, please be gentle with us.

In Essen

Germany v Indonesia Draw
The draw for the World Group II tie in Essen between Germany and Indonesia has been made:

Anna-Lena Groenefeld (GER) v Ayu-Fani Damayanti (INA)
Julia Schruff (GER) v Wynne Prakusya (INA)
Anna-Lena Groenefeld (GER) v Wynne Prakusya (INA)
Julia Schruff (GER) v Ayu-Fani Damayanti (INA)
Anca Barna/Sandra Kloesel (GER) v Wynne Prakusya/Romana Tedjakusuma (INA)

Indonesia's hopes of upsetting Germany in their Fed Cup tie in Essen starting on Saturday have been dented by the withdrawal
of their top ranked player Angelique Widjaja with a long-standing knee injury.

Widjaja, who has been out since last year's U.S. Open, had hoped to return after an operation but decided against making
the long trip to the tennis-crazy Western German city for World Group II tie. Her absence has left the visitors with only three players including 610th ranked 16-year-old Ayu-Fani Damayanti. Captain Suzanna Anggarkusuma has switched from a "non-playing" to a "playing" status in case of injury.

"I am ready for anything," she said. "But the chances of my playing are slim. I should be able to rely on my team."

Anggarkusuma, aged 42, has not played a competitive event since the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

Also in the Indonesian line-up is Romana Tedjakusuma, who has retired from top-class tennis but still plays on the U.S. national club scene from her new base in California. She quit three years ago to take a maths course at university and made only a brief return to the WTA Tour before stopping again.

"We have certainly had our problems and although we are ranked 10th in the Fed Cup rankings, one ahead of Germany, they
are very strong favourites," said Anggarkusuma. "But Indonesia always have plenty of determination and we always work hard for a good result even if our players are not so high ranking."

To put Indonesia's task into perspective, their highest ranked player Wynne Prakusya is ranked 422nd in the world while
Germany's lowest rated is Sandra Kloesel, who stands at 139. It promises to be comfortable debut for German skipper Barbara Rittner, who retired late last year and was appointed captain shortly afterwards in January.

"So far so good. I really like my new role but I guess I won't know how nervous I'll be until I sit down tomorrow and watch," she said. "I'm taking nothing for granted in this match of course, it's always dangerous to be in the position of favourites."

German women's tennis badly needs a boost too, with the country desperate to fill the massive gap left by Steffi Graf's retirement in 1999.

"From what I can see, we have no one aged between 15 and 18 who is likely to break into the world's top 10 or top 20 within
the next two years or so, which is what everybody wants," said Rittner.

"But this is a young team with plenty of potential and we shall have to be patient and see how they develop."

Her team is lead by 19-year-old Anna-Lena Groenefeld, who is ranked 47th in the world with Julia Schruff (ranked 104), Anca
Barna (123) and Kloesel making up the four.

The tie begins on Saturday (1200 GMT) with Groenefeld taking on the Indonesian number two Damayanti followed by Schruff
against Prakusya. The singles are then reversed on Sunday - barring any late change of mind by the captains - before Prakusya and Tedjakusuma and Germans Barna and Kloesel round off the contest with the doubles.

Hmm, it was very nice weekend in Essen. Worth all the money.

Saturday

It was a very hot day, and everybody was really overdressed. So in one break (not the tennis one :)) Barbara Rittner asked, if the ball kids could get out of their jackets. This was really appreciated by the ball kids and the crowd.

First match was Anna-Lena vs. Ayu-Fani Damayanti. Anna-Lena started very nervous and got broken, this was a surprise. But after a while Anna-Lena got better and better into the match and had some nice shots. Damayanti was without a chance in set 2.

Next was Julia Schruff vs. Wynne Prakusya and this was a very close one, although the score says something different. But Julia was able to make the important points, her game was sometimes very poor. So she made it and this was what she had to do.

This was the end of Saturday already after 3 hours, I waited some time for Anna-Lena but could not found her but at once she was standing right in front of me and I asked her for a foto with her and she was so kind to make one with me. I was very nervous and then I asked her something which I should not, something about Meghann Shaughnessys health. haha...god damn I was so nervous and happy. She was so kind to answer my question.

Essen is a quiet nice town, my hotel was near the main train station so it was very handy.

Sunday

On the second day Anna-Lena started again in a match against Wynne Prakusya and that was like the second set yesterday. No chance for Indonesia, I think Anna-Lena was bit angry because she wanted to double-bagle (or how is it called?!?). But no chance as I sad for Indonesia, that was very quick and good.

After Germany hat already won, team captains were able to exchange their players, so Anca Barna got the chance to play a singles match against Romana Tedjakusuma. Anca said after the match that she played very bad and have to improve her game but maybe because of that it was the most interesting match of the whole 2 days. Very nice and long rallies.

In the end there was the doubles and it was also a present for the about 50 supporters of Indonesia, which enjoyed their team all the weekend. Doubles Team of Indonesia played very well, with nice tactic so they deserved that win. Julia Schruff was a bit angry about her game but had some nice shots. Rittner gave her job away for this match to someone from the german fed cup team. But it was nice to see how happy all the girls are and this could be very helpful to get through relegation.

It was a very nice weekend as I said, the hospitality was very yummy, the matches were at many times very interesting. The Etuf Essen seems to be a very rich club and not only because of that it was very nice scene at the Baldeneysee.

I know my german is better but to apologize for my english, i uploaded some pictures at http://akstra.de/pics/galerien/essen230405/. If you want some of them in a bigger size, just pm me your email adress and the image-number.

I can only underline what my fellow German tennisfan said. I thought that Barna's opponent deserved the win here. She hadn't played competetively in years and was so great for that IMO. Barna was very shaky and lost many points because of stupid play. The doubles was great though.

Kinda funny was beofre the mtches started that one ballkid took a drink out of the "fridge" on the court and one ballgirl said "put it back, PUT IT BACK, PUUUT IIIIT BAAACK " and we all had to laugh, because they quarreled for minutes. :p

Barna broke a string of her racquet and her replacement looked so dirty and ugly.
