Sorry andrew, i know you start these threads, but i wanna talk about it now!

Title no 47 we hope!!! We just want masha in the other half of the draw. I think she will be - the organisers want the most excitement right towards the end.... and you aint gonna get it with a momo/masha final!

lets go lindsay!!!!!!

Lindsay didnt have any points to defend at dubai did she????

How many points does she have to defend at indian wells, cause she made it to final last year and year before??

Has lindsay's number 1 lead opened up alot, or can she lose number 1 spot at Indian wells?

lindsayno1
Mar 7th, 2005, 08:27 PM
lindsay had no points to defend at dubai as she didnt play there last year. she has a shed load to defend here!

Not sure about the no1 thing....

Andrew.
Mar 7th, 2005, 08:33 PM
Lindsay has more safe points than Mauresmo, barely. Whoever goes further will get #1, with ties going to Lindsay.

Loughyunijen
Mar 7th, 2005, 08:38 PM
This is one of the best tournies of the WTA season.....you own Indian wells 2005.....c'mon linds...bag this one!

Make it happen.....especially in your home state of California!

Arhh love it....and you the Queen!

Plus john will be able to watch all this tourny being so close to home .....so no strop's!

I don't think so. Mauresmo is not good on the spring hardcourts. And, she has quite a bit coming off on the clay.

Andrew.
Mar 7th, 2005, 08:46 PM
Hopefully Sharapova will be on Mauresmo's side of the draw.

I hope we aren't "injured" when we play her this time.

Lindsay's projected draw:

1r Bye
2r Karatantcheva
3r Shaughnessy
4r Pennetta
QF Dechy
SF Sharapova.

Our draw is nice, until the SF.

I love Lindsay's draw. *Does the wave*

I think Karatantcheva is a good player. I saw her play against Sharapova and everyone said that she just tried to outhit her but I think otherwise.

Anyway I like her draw. Coverage starts on the 13th. Jolly jolly, joy joy.

lindsayno1
Mar 8th, 2005, 07:42 AM
RAaa masha in the semis

In Lindsays half of the draw she also has:
Amy Fraizer
Meghann Shaunessy
Sam Stosour
Dechy
Masha
Safina
Dani Hantchucova
Mary Pierce
Lisa Raymond
Sprem

The rest aren't worth mentioning really

We best beat Maria here. Lindsays home pad, shes pumped after the Dubai win. Johns gonna be there so she will be :). No injuries at present. PLEASE beat the witch!

!<blocparty>!
Mar 8th, 2005, 07:47 AM
Cakewalk to the semi's, I like it :)

Lindsay will need to be motivated for the semi. She can reach them with Dubai form but needs to step it up (hopefully like against Capriati in 2003) but not tank the final.

lindsayno1
Mar 8th, 2005, 07:54 AM
If she gets the final she will win it. Amelie....PLEASE!

I just hope dani H does something useful for once and causes a maria upset!

I'm just glad Lindsay doesn't meet Clijster's in the first round! I think Lindsay knows she can beat Maria and as I said before, she rates Indian Wells very highly and will want a win here.

It's irrelevant as one way or the other she would have to beat Swishy for the title anyway. i actually think Linds will be MORE pumped up to beat her in the semi's (to get to the final) than she would be if they met in the final. Either way that little bi-artch is goin' DOWN!

LindsayRulez
Mar 8th, 2005, 02:46 PM
Lindsay should be totally confident after her Dubai win; by the look on her face and the speech she made, I honestly doubt she expected to win it her first time there. She looked so surprised and just happy. The awards ceremony was awesome, they even shot off fireworks in the background. That tournament does a great job supporting the WTA.

But Lindsay has it made getting to the semis. I'd actually rather her face Sharapova earlier than later, it'll only give her confidence going into later matches. I don't think Sharapova has ever done too well here, and this is Lindsay's favorite tournament behind the slams. She seems to instinctively raise her level at Indian Wells, she'll do awesome!

lindsayno1
Mar 8th, 2005, 02:59 PM
have you got a transcript of the ceremony at dubai? they didnt show it on eurosport!!!

I just hope lindsay doesnt let past experiences with masha go to her head. Lindsays still better imo

Mmm, she won't be as tight as if it was for the title perhaps. It all looks a bit of a yawn fest until the semis. Hopefully they hold to their seeding, I want quality matches.

Well, haven't had a good look at the draw yet, but from the odd bits people have posted it seems like a realitively 'easy' draw - although I'll say that with caution.

Seems there are a few key players not here, including Molik......which is strange given the fact that it's the "fifth grand slam".

Hopefully, I'll post more soon. Anyone have the Eurosport scheduel at hand?

thanks,

Lindsay's probably playing for Corina, since she thought they'd never even set foot on a tennis court again, let alone reach a grand slam final.

Although there is logic in what you are saying, it's not entirely stupid of her.

Mar 9th, 2005, 08:33 PM

lindsay post match interview.

L. DAVENPORT /S. Karatantcheva

6-3, 6-2

An interview with:

LINDSAY DAVENPORT

THE MODERATOR: First question.

Q. You probably played 500 of these matches against somebody's name you can't pronounce. Do you remember any of them? Do you have any memory of any of them? Do any of them stick in your mind for any reason?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: About the names or the young ones?

Q. The person, the match, the player, the site.

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Oh, yeah. I mean, I think I have a really good memory about players. I think I'm a pretty good judge when I play someone if they're going to end up, you know, being a good player or not.

Yeah, it's tough. I mean, gosh, that's twice this year I've had to play 15-year-olds that are pretty good actually. I played Vaidisova at the Australian Open , and now I'll just say Sesil today.

Gosh, I can't -- 15 is awfully young.

Q. Does she have a future?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Well, I think she hits the ball really well. I mean, I would say yeah, for sure. But I'm not obviously -- I can't see into the future that well about injuries and other stuff like that. But, yeah, for 15, these girls are really good.

Q. Weren't you also pretty good at 15?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: I was pretty good. But, you know, it took me till when I was in my 16th to come into the top hundred. You know, I think that they all have a little bit more confidence than I had in those years. And I think they've all been trained and told that that is how it was going to be. It was all pretty shocking to me and I was a little bit overwhelmed sometimes in the beginning. These girls seem a little more focused than I was.

I was good young. I made huge strides the year I turned 16.

Q. Are these the most difficult matches to play against someone with nothing to lose in a first-round match?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: You know, I'm going to have to say finals of Grand Slams are probably a little more difficult (laughter). You know, it is true. I mean, you're always looking in the first few rounds of holding opponents off, and especially the younger girls that are very confident and have, like you said, nothing to lose. There's something a little more added than a normal first-round match, that's for sure. I don't think it's the most difficult matches that we face during the year. But, you know, it definitely adds a little bit more intensity to the opening match.

Q. Do you remember her situation last year when she played here and she said she was going to kick Sharapova's ass?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Yes. I think that stemmed from them knowing each other from Bollettieri's is what I heard. I didn't know her, so I didn't expect her to say anything like that. But I don't know.

But, you know, from some of the quotes I read, she said she learned a lot about last year and speaking out like that. It's probably just never a good situation to put yourself in by saying that kind of stuff. The only kind of publicity you're getting is negative, and it sounds like at 14 years old she's very young and learned her lesson at a young age. You know, I don't think there's been anything like that since.

Q. She said earlier she got ahead 2-1 today and she didn't know how to deal with the lead. She felt more comfortable when you were leading.

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Yeah, I mean, it's true. I remember when I was -- well, I was a year later, but playing Steffi . The first set I lost 6-0, the second set I think I served for the set at 5-4. I was just like, "I can't believe I'm serving for the set." I mean, I must have said it and got broken at love, ended up losing in a tiebreak.

But the one time I did get up, I was just like, "Wow, this is so neat." It goes away quite quickly some of the time.

Yeah, I mean, fortunately for me it was very early in the match and before I was able to really grab control, she had a lead, but I was able to get it right back, I believe.

Q. Rate your game today.

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: It was good. I think, you know, I'm always happy with a win. I'm getting used to the conditions here. It was good. I don't like to look too -- like dissect and analyze too harshly in the beginning, but I felt like after the first few games, I started to play a lot better, and was happy.

Q. Focus was there?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: I was trying to be. I think it was.

Q. The press notes have this big deal about how you can become the quickest woman to a million dollars if you win the final here, two days faster than Justine Henin . Do you care about that stuff?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: No, I don't (laughter). Not at all.

I mean, it's going to keep getting broken every year as prize money goes up and up. But, no, I remember someone has -- my coach was trying to get me motivated by saying I was close to possibly at some point reaching $20 million. That's kind of been like a fun little joke.

But as far as quickness in earning money, no.

Q. Are you considering a donation to the "old Sports Writers Benevolence Fund"?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: I was. But you understand that 50% of that goes to our good old government, and the other 20 to expenses. You know, it's funny, I promise you I don't have $20 million in a bank account sitting there.

Q. You brought up Steffi . If you had to say who was a better player in terms of all-around impact, Steffi or Martina Navratilova ?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Well, there's two different sides to that. I think Martina has made, you know, a huge impact in leading stuff outside playing on the tennis courts. I think Steffi was extremely focused and the best player we've ever had in terms of tennis and athleticism, in her tennis talent on the court.

I think Martina obviously was a phenomenal player and seemed to have a louder and stronger voice outside the tennis court.

So I'm not sure what you're going for.

Q. I'm going on court.

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Okay. You know, I wasn't around playing in the '80s when Martina was obviously dominating. I lived through Steffi's kind of dominant era. So for me I say Steffi . But I didn't have to face Martina in the '80s, so it's hard for me to really say too much.

Q. Anything like that Graf forehand? Is it a shot apart?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: I mean, you know, her overall athleticism is the thing that stands out more than anything, how she moved and how graceful she was. Her forehand was phenomenal. She managed to, you know, make that a weapon from '87, or maybe even earlier, through '99 when she retired. She was able to kind of change with the technology and still become obviously a huge factor.

Q. People love rivalries in tennis. You've had great rivalries with Hingis , Venus . I don't know if you played Conchita like 30 times. What makes a great rivalry? Do you think the Serena - Sharapova is in that echelon?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: I think it could be. I think it's the most intriguing and exciting match-up we've had in the last year. I think what makes a rivalry is a lot of times, you know, you have to have like the close matches, and sometimes the two different personalities, sometimes not.

But I think, you know, big matches and close matches more than anything make the big rivalries. They've played some phenomenal matches so far, and they've only played like three times, and each one has been pretty dramatic. I think that right now in women's tennis, that's a very appealing match-up.

Lindsay plays Meghan Shaughnessy next. I know zlich about her other than what it says in the Bible (2005 Official Book of Pro Tennis).

I thought that was a "silly" question. Is it hardest to play a first round opponent with nothing to lose. She should have said, "Yes, I mean pfft, anyone can get past those nobodies in those silly Grand Slam finals."

Take the title Lindsay!

Andrew.

Mehghann was about to break into the top 10 a few years back, but injuries and a total lack of consistency held her back, and she's out of the top 50 now. She has a big serve. She almost broke Brena's ace record a few weeks ago. When Meghann is on, she can be very difficult. But, she's only on like twice a year. Lindsay beat her here last year easily and has never lost a set to her. The toughest player left in the quarter in Nat, and she's a total freak now.

Sounds easy enough? I wouldn't know, haven't seen her. Hoping she isn't "in the zone" Big serve as in big enough to trouble Lindsay or as in big for a top 50 player?

Hoping Henman and Melzer play a marathon so ESPN will be forced to play Lindsay live and not Maria! They would only have to play for four hours long. :p

Lindsay is unbeaten against Shaughnessy and Frazier [10-0] and Meghann, from what I saw at Hopman Cup, doesn't really yeild any weapons.

I dont think our linds played exceptional today, but she got teh job done so to speak! I htink the wind was a huge factor here today, it was very blustery and that definatley affected her game, however both players had to play on court and thus credit also go es to megan she played a very gutsey game!

Think linds will have tp step it up a notch if shes gonna beat screampova!

!<blocparty>!
Mar 14th, 2005, 08:46 PM
YES!

Her attitude was great out there today in my opinion. And she's appearing to be really tough mentally this year, all these three set wins is great :) She showed us why she's the worlds best today, for sure.

If she keeps up this attitude, her game will come together, I'm sure :)

Lindsay

Andrew.
Mar 14th, 2005, 08:56 PM
This isn't bad. Meghann was playing in one of her "two days a year" form today. ;) She's great when playing like that.

But playing like this, Lindsay still doesn't beat Sharapova. Have to step it up.

Lindsay plays Kutuzova in the 4r. Kutuzova is 16 and she's been called the next big thing for almost two years now. But serious shoulder injuries derailed her all of last year. Now she's finally starting to play well. From what I saw of her in LA two years ago, she's very solid. But her serve needs a ton of work. She's likea more powerful but not as fast Sesil. Should be a similar scoreline. But, Kutuzova has never been on such a stage like IW Stadium, and hasn't ever played a top 10 player. ;)

No, the bottom half play their fourth round matches before the top half [which Lindsay is in] so that will be tomorrow and Lindsay will play her fourth round match on Wednesday, quarters on Thursday, semis on Friday and final on Saturday. Same as Dubai.

That's my understanding anyway :$

If Lindsay beats Maria in the semi's, and this is a big if, she wins the title........

Thats what I think anyway. Win over Maria = confidance sky high, momo out with no major threats left in bottom half (really) and its easy final win.

anyone concur? lol:p

Mar 14th, 2005, 10:11 PM
You may well be right... I just didn't expect her to play tomorrow.

I'd love Lindsay to beat Sharapova [which is doable with movement] and then Clijster's. Kim has beaten Lindsay the past 4 or 5 times... too many!

LINDSAY DAVENPORT

THE MODERATOR: First question, please.

Q. A little sand in your eyes there?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: It was tough. You know, I thought it was tough in the beginning, and the third set it was the worst it had been the whole match. It's no fun to play like that. I mean, the spectators, it's tough on them. It's tough especially on the players.

But especially here, you get the dust blowing around. It was not fun.

Q. How does that rank among all-time worsts here?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Pretty high. I mean, at the end it was almost, I mean, unplayable really. US Open last year a couple days got really windy. I was not in Miami last year where I heard it was really bad. I think the last two or three games that we played were some of the windiest I've tried to play in.

Q. So what do you do on your serve under those circumstances?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Just pray that it goes in so you don't have to hit a second serve, because it's so hard to control those.

It was so obvious which way the wind was going. The one side against the wind, you were just hoping it would go over the net, and the other side just trying anything to do to keep it from going long.

Most important thing is, you know, I was trying to hit more first serves and not worry about hitting them too hard. I think, you know, that helped me a little bit.

Q. How much luck is involved in winning a match like this?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: It can be pretty lucky. I mean, it was -- just trying to keep balls in. She served the first game of the third, up 40-15, I was with the wind and able to keep a few balls in and break. It seemed to kind of really dishearten her, whereas when we switched sides, she made a lot of errors with the wind. All you're trying to do is play the conditions. It's a shame because it took out any kind of strategy. You were just hoping the balls went in.

Hopefully I handle the conditions a little bit better. It wasn't that much luck, but certainly some of it played into it.

Q. Did you think this would go three sets? Was she tougher than you thought? Was it the wind?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Well, I knew that the wind was going to be more of an equalizer. I played her a bunch of times before and feel like I have a good game against her and know what I need to do. It's hard to actually execute the plan when you're not sure where the ball's going and having to deal with those conditions.

I thought in the second set she hit some great shots and she handled the wind better serving-wise. And that really made the difference in that set. Finally in the third, I was able to serve, you know, get 'em in. She made a few more errors in the third.

It didn't surprise me going to a third set. I mean, I know she's a good player and we were dealing with pretty unsure conditions out there.

Q. What is the most difficult thing about playing in such a windy environment?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Well, I think one is unsure, first of all, where your opponent's ball is going to land, how the wind takes that ball. And the other thing, controlling the ball. On one side you have to swing your absolute hardest and it still was barely going over the net. And on the other side, if you just touched it a little bit too much, it was going long. So you have to be able to really kind of change your game from what side of the court you're on.

The other thing is trying to serve with the toss going absolutely everywhere. In the third set more so. When you looked up, there was dust everywhere. You want to start off the rally with a first serve and then just keep trying. For me, I was trying to keep the balls more in the middle of the court, you know, just not trying to go too close to the lines.

Q. Does it swirl more in the stadium?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: It was going one way pretty solidly. Out there today it wasn't. In other matches it has swirled more. Today it was pretty one way.

Shame it was basically all about the weather.

I really think Lindsay will beat Maria because really, she should be up 2-0 against Maria, but the rain delay and injury kept her back. Plus, Indian Wells is Lindsay's tournament to win and she loves it and I dont think she'll let Maria upstage her this time :) BUT she needs to play better than she did against Shaugnessy. anyways, we can't overlook kutuzova because she could be tough.

I'm tired of excuses. If she was so injured, she would have retired. And top players need to deal with rain delays. Maria won. For a tournament we love so much, we play like crap. Maria would overcome the wind. Not whine about how difficult it was.

I'm just tired of excuses. We win, or we lose. End of story.

Maria Sharapova:

You know, I guess I just had to hold on. The first three games were pretty ugly. You know, it's just a matter of getting used to the conditions

You don't know what to expect because you know you're playing well, but these conditions don't make you play well. You start trying to do something different, you might start making errors.

when the wind died down, I thought it was more consistent. I was able to hit one more ball in.

But don't you have any faith that Lindsay can pull out a win EVEN if she has recently been playing bad? I think she's know's if she playing up to par with her fellow compadres up there in those high rankings. I think she is capable of stepping it when she needs too. She played the AO like crap but came out nicely in the first and begining of the second against Serena.

She's plays like shit at the AO and makes it to the final and is four games away from the title. She plays decent at the Wimbledon and the U.S. but she only makes it to the semi.

These patterns confuse me and most likely mean nothing, but I beleive Lindsay can and will step it up against Maria. Just have to wait to see the match.

Australian Open was different. Her draw was a cakewalk. No top ten players en route to the final. And playing like shit, she still got there, but was really close to losing, really, really close. And let's not even go near that final.

Playing like this, she doesn't beat Maria. End of story. That's what I've been saying all along. I never said she couldn't raise her game, but my haters here only point out parts of my posts. But if she's playing like this, there's just no way.

Elldee
Mar 15th, 2005, 10:03 PM
She WILL raise her game... top players go up the gears in a tournement! I thought she played some hot tennis against Shaughnessy without netting thousands of drive volleys [as she was against Jankovic]. The wind was blowing some of her shots out but her serve was on and her movement was the best I've ever seen it [or at least close].

Andrew, after the first set in Tokyo Lindsay's coach wanted her to retire, she tried short points and upped her serve and kept it close. Balls hit a metre away from her she was leaving... I have faith in her.

Lindsay gave up on the second set yesterday and really isn't playing badly at all... Andrew, why is your happiness so short lived? All you wanted was a title in Dubai and you got it and now you're down on Lindsay again. Sport's are supposed to be fun and exciting not a chore.

Okay, I guess that's fair to say. But you don't seem very opptimistic, which is your call or not, I mean no has the duty to be opptimistic. Yet, in truth, can there be some opptimisim?

I hope you don't consider me as a "hater". Truly, I'm not trying to be if I am.

Hey guys... CHILL OUT. I mean, it's not the end of the world if Lindsay loses against MAria (I'm by no means saying she will, I firmly believe Lindsay will beat her). But u shouldn't be argueing(sp?) about something that hasn't even happened. Okay, everyone is entiteled to their own opinion. Some see things more negatively, others more positively, either way u should stick to yours and let others think their own way.
If Andrew is only happy with Lindsay winning, that's fine. I'm just glad Lindsay's just won a title and she's again reached a GS final. Plus she's said she's playing till the US Open AND she's got no nugging injuries. For me Lindsay playing healthy is all that matters, she'll make us happy, I can guarantee you that, she's done so for the last decade, right?

Her first serve percentage was 60% and she was winning about 85% of points on her first serve. She had 3 aces [one on a second serve] but also two doubles. She broke Kutuzova 5 times and was broken once from 4 break points... I am confident she's progressing at the right level and saving her energy for the quarters and semis.

sorry for creating unnecessary tension guys, but sometimes I feel like it's unfair that some people get to say whatever they want and others have to suppress their thoughts. I won't argue with Andrew anymore, I promise.

Next up for Lindsay is Dechy (wow she's playing her a lot lately, huh?); Sharapova plays Pierce, who beat her at the US Open. The bottom half also looks interesting with Clijsters/Martinez and Dementieva/Kuznetsova. I like how the draw is panning out!

LINDSAY DAVENPORT

THE MODERATOR: Questions for Lindsay.

Q. We're doing like the Top 30 moments. Can you talk about your title here in '97, then your title in 2000.

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Yeah. '97 was a breakthrough because after Atlanta, that was really the first big title that I won on tour. Took a lot of pride in that after first turning pro here at this tournament. I remember I played a bit of a surprise finalist in Spirlea in the finals. I think I had a tough match with Venus that year. It was exciting to be able to win kind of in the tournament I loved to play in the most.

2000 was probably a bit more exciting. I kind of had the a good roll going after winning the Australian Open, playing Martina in the finals. I was down a set and a break and came back to win that. I remember getting really a great buzz after winning that title, and that meant a lot to me. It's very exciting.

Q. Kind of nice you won the first title here in the new building.

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: That was the first year, wasn't it? I didn't realize that. But, yeah. I was so excited with that win. It definitely was a tough tournament for me. Had won a lot of matches in a row up to that point. Even in the finals, it was a battle. I was able to mentally overcome a deficit and then really cruise in the third.

Mar 16th, 2005, 11:33 AM
Yeah, I'm very happy with the quarters too, LindsayRulez. I hope for Lindsay to beat Dechy [which I expect to be done 6-4 6-3] and then I'd love her to play Mary, not because I am afraid she won't beat Maria, but rather because Mary's my second favourite player. Then I'd like her to play Clijster's and think she will.

Also, I think a forum about Lindsay needs heated debate about Lindsay... it's fun. I like hearing Andrew's point of view and his obscure facts.

Sharapova played like shit, and a longer part of her interview is on the website.

I've just heard some Lindsay comments on TV right now, and she looks so happy, she said "It was a pleasure playing out there tonight, the conditions were perfect and we had some good rallies in that second set"

Aww, I love it when Lindsay looks to be enjoying herself... I loved her reaction when she beat Dechy in the AO semi. I seriously think Lindsay's love of the tournement will carry her through against Sharapova who I think, after a scare, will step it up against Pierce. I'm torn, I think Pierce/Sharapova will be a better match but I love Lindsay, so I don't know who I want Eurosport to show.

Elldee
Mar 17th, 2005, 08:02 AM
Lindsay had a hangover from the quarters in the first set and Dechy was playing at her best. This time, Dechy is playing worse although gets better deeper in tournements, they're on a faster court which Lindsay prefers and Lindsay has only played 3 previous matches and no doubles. It's all in Lindsay's favour really... she played badly in the AO semi and got through, that says a lot... although nerves won't be as much of a factor for Dechy.

Lindsay played a GREAT second set. 15 winners to only 4 UEs, she really took her game to Dechy. After the great service ace she made at 30 30 5-6 in the 1st, there was no turning back.

She was also moving REALLY well in the second, making lots of really great on the run winners.

Well played by Lindsay!

An interview with:

LINDSAY DAVENPORT

Q. How much did that call in the first set kind of bother you?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Well, it was just kind of bizarre. It was so late. I mean, I was just about to hit the next shot. She obviously, the umpire, didn't overrule it right away. My thing with her was how she handled it. She either thought it was in or out right when it bounced. You can't wait that long.

It was frustrating, but I had already been up 40-Love that game and let it slip. I was probably frustrated about that, as well, the point when that happened, that ad-in.

But, yeah, it was just so late.

Q. Was it just a matter of time before you got it back?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Well, gosh, I let her back in the set so many times. Both games up 40-Love, was serving, got broken both of those, which, you know, you can't let someone get back into the first set like that. So I really felt like once I held to get to 6-All, I never really looked back from that point.

But I started the match off well, and played, you know, the second set really well. Just some bad games thrown in there in the first.

Q. You're in and out the vet, not the new-comer any more. What would you do definitely in training in the earlier years? Anything?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: No, I don't think so. I think everything that's happened to me throughout, I don't think I'd really change anything. I learned a lot along the way. I think what's hard about tennis is that when you're doing really well and you're young, people expect so much of you. But you probably aren't smart enough to figure out exactly how things go until you get older.

It's a shame that from 16 to 22, people expect so much out of the female players, and they're not mature enough or smart enough yet to realize what's really best for them. But I felt like I figured everything out on my own. It was, you know, my own path. Was happy about that.

Q. How much more or less are you enjoying the day-to-day grind as well as reward of playing a tournament?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: I still enjoy the process of working towards an ultimate end goal, and I enjoy being at home and working out and practicing and getting ready for something.

I'm not enjoying as much being on the road. I like to go out there and play, but it's funny, I used to get way more excited about wins than I do now. Sometimes, like when I lose, it's not as devastating as it used to be. I don't know, it's still an interesting process going on in my mind about exactly how it's going.

Q. So is it sort of an ordeal to pack your bags and get ready for another trip almost?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: I'm okay doing that. It's like when I get there and it's day 3 to day 21 (laughter). It's funny. I'm normally like, okay, I'm going. It's when I get there, there's a lot of downtime, I'm on my own. That's tough.

But, you know, I'm trying to play places where it makes a lot of sense. We're trying to do a really smart schedule where my husband or maybe my mom or someone can come with me. You know, my schedule looks really great for the next few months, and hopefully that will keep me mentally fresh and happy.

Q. What do you do to fill that downtime?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: I read and go online sometimes, do some crosswords. I'm not one that goes out and about and does a lot of stuff. I tend to get sick of my hotel rooms after a few days.

Q. Mary was in here the other day. She made an interesting revelation that at the age of 30 she actually realized she loves the game. Andre has a little bit of a similar theme as well. Are you in a similar kind of place?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: No, I've always loved it. I've always loved to play. My husband and I hit on my day off just so we can both play. Love watching tennis. Used to watch it when I was younger. My mom would take me to tournaments. Love watching it now. That's absolutely never been the problem. That's what keeps me actually still going, is the actual hitting of the ball.

As far as traveling and being in locker rooms and being on the road, that's the stuff that I don't enjoy. If we could play every tournament in Southern California, I'd play forever (smiling).

Q. With so much success here, do you consider this your home court?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: You know, I feel very comfortable playing out here. I don't know, you know, "home" would probably mean practice at the (indiscernible). I've always loved my time out here and won a lot of matches throughout my career in Indian Wells, and always seem to really get focused and fired up to play out here.

Q. If you hadn't gotten to be No. 1 and won Grand Slams, in another incarnation, would you feel ambivalent about getting to No. 1 without winning a Slam?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: I think being No. 1 is more important if you don't have that Grand Slam. I think it's a huge accomplishment, regardless, the first time you get there. I think if you have a Grand Slam, that to me has meant more - in the last few years, especially.

But it's interesting to here like Maria talk. Maria has a Grand Slam, but she wants nothing more than to be No. 1. That's obviously a huge goal of hers. For me it was always about not really worrying about points and chasing tournaments and worrying about how other players do, but about playing your tournaments well and winning Grand Slams. If it happens, great. If it doesn't, you know, you worried about yourself and that's all you can really do.

I don't want rain... I hate waking up in the morning to find out the score.

Usually the live scores are much faster, they even have first serve fault and stuff. I think rain is just forecast, and obviously as we saw with Dementieva/Clijsters, it's overcast.
