View Full Version : One Hit Wonders

Be interesting (I think! :p) to reminisce over the one-hit wonders of years gone by (in either UK or US). What song captured the imagination for the nations for weeks on end, was playing in every shop, city centre and public place until you were so sick of it you wanted to vomit?

And then......nothing.

The artist must follow this path: 1) Get to number one with unbelieveably popular song. 2) Rake in a ton of money, bathe in your fame. 3) Get unbelievable publicity for follow-up single. 4) Watch that single flop amazingly 5) Sign up for pantomime and live your life in absolute obscurity.

The two i can think of at the moment in the UK are the legendary Chesney Hawkes with "The One and Only", which was everywhere for ages, and then his career died (it was indeed his "one and only" hit :p) and also a Scottish woman (I think) called Aneka with one of my personal favourite one-hit wonders, "Japanese Boy". She disappeared almost immediately as that song left the charts.

Others?

Yes, Aneka topped the UK charts with Japanese boy. Had one or two follow ups like little lady which song probably made the top 20 UK charts.
Would go for Babylon Zoo with spaceman first one which comes to my mind. There are probably more one hit wonders. Can't think of any others. Obatafan maybe former Scottish band Slik where James Midge Ure became famous. Not sure of "Forever and ever!" topped the UK Charts.

It's so easy to predict one-hit wonders nowadays ... anyone with successful career lasting over 5 years can acount himself lucky. What can you expect when most of the songs are record for sole purpose ... money! Look at Elvis - after all this time he can still top the charts with his memorable songs. Somehow i don't see Britney Spears, Frau Lopez etc. being hot-sellers in about 25 years from now!

What was that song that went #1 in UK "Spaceman, I always wanted you to know, that your a spaceman, intergalatic life" (I think that's how it went) :tape:
Babylon Zoo - Spaceman (Radio Edit) Lyrics

Spaceman
I always wanted you to go into space, man (intergalactic Christ)
Spaceman
I always wanted you to go into space, man (intergalactic Christ)

Pungent smells, they consumate my home
Beyond the black horizon, trying to take control
See my girl, she shivers in her bones
The sun and zenith rising, trying to take us all

There's a fire between us, so where is your God?
There's a fire between us
I can't get off the carousel, I can't get off the carousel
I can't get off the carousel, I can't get off this world

The sickening taste
Homophobic jokes
Images of fascist votes
Beam me up, 'cause I can't breathe

Spaceman
I always wanted you to go into space, man

I can't get off, I can't get off
I can't get off, I can't
I can't get off, I can't get off
I can't get off, I can't

It's time to terminate the great wide world
Morbid fascinations, television takes control
Decimation, diffrent races fall
Electronic information tampers with your soul

There's a fire between us, so where is your God?
There's a fire between us
I can't get off the carousel, I can't fall off this world

The sickening taste
Homophobic jokes
Images of fascist votes
Beam me up, 'cause I can't breathe

Spaceman
I always wanted you to go into space, man (intergalactic Christ)
Spaceman
I always wanted you to go into space, man (intergalactic Christ)

Spaceman, Spaceman, Spaceman, Spaceman
Spaceman, Spaceman, Spaceman, Spaceman
Spaceman
Spaceman

Anneka was from Paisley I think and called Mary Sanderman in real life. Japanese Boy is fantastic, and featured on one of the radio stations in Grand Theft Auto.

Also, Toto Colo or sthg similar and 'I Eat Cannibals'. Another classic.

The Last Unicorn:
Petula Clark had a second #1 in the US, "My Love"

Whoever mentioned Nancy Sinatra -- She's definitely not a one-hit wonder in the States. "Something Stupid", a duet with her father, was a huge hit, if creepy because it's a father/daughter duet.

Brenda Lee wasn't a one-hit wonder, either.

Martika also had at least one other Top 10 hit in the States, "Love... Thy Will Be Done".

The ultimate one-hit wonder is, of course, Debby Boone, whose "You Light Up My Life" was #1 for 10 weeks in 1977.

Did Tag Team ever have any hit besides, "Whoomp! There Shit Is"?

Didn't Shanice have a hit with "Saving Forever For You" from the 'Beverly Hills 90210' soundtrack? She also released "I'm Cryin" which made the Top 10 in the US. I remember that because I saw it with my very own eyes and was surprised since that song was not particularly strong.

Sorry, but Xscape weren't very big in Australia (just the one song was released) and that was one of the only songs I ever saw on the American charts. Easy mistake.
One-hit wonders:

"Sunshine After The Rain" - Berri (Was a No. 1 hit in the UK but not heard a peep from her since 1996).
"Me, Myself & I" - Scandal'us (Aussie "Popstars" creation that went bust)
"Rapture" - Iio
"Crush" - Jennifer Paige
"Addicted To Bass" - Josh Abrahams & Amiel Daemion (They went by a different name in the UK with this smash hit)
"Lovesong" - Amiel (Yep, the same Amiel as above went solo and this was her only hit)

Portrait had a big hit in the UK with a cover of the Bee Gees' "How Deep Is Your Love".

Others:

"This Is Your Night" - Amber (She also sang as part of a trio known as 'Stars of 54' for the "54" movie soundtrack)
"Don't Say You Love Me" - M2M (They had another song chart in OZ but not sure if they are big back in Europe)
"Groovejet (If This Ain't Love)" - Spiller (I haven't heard or seen another song from them since Sophie went solo)
"Don't Think I'm Not" - Kandi (She was a top songwriter before turning to recording, so she may have had many other hits but didn't actually sing them herself)
"Touch Me" - Rui Da Silva (Could be a huge star in the underground music dance scene for all I know).
"United States of Whatever" - Liam Lynch (I love this song)

Mr Blobby.

Thankfully. Once was more than enough.

And as he prepares to make his appearance on 'The Games', time to remember the dirge that was Chesney Hawkes 'I am the one and only'.

Dr Alban's 'It's My Life' will now forever remeind me of Tampax adverts.

And I don't know if it's a difference in what gets released and/or is successful in different countries, but some of the acts mentioned wouldn't qualify, IMHO. As mentioned, Take That and The Cardigans are in that list. As are Utah Saints. Ok, they weren't prolific, but they did have at least one more hit that sampled a Eurythmics record. S'Express had other songs that made it, as did Sinead O' Connor (I love 'Mandinka'), Faith No More too and The Verve.

As for Sub Sub, they reinvented themselves as The Doves and are enjoying a mildly successful time at the moment. But strictly speaking, yeah, Sub Sub belong in the shit list.

The funniest thing about Nivea is her song titles.
One of her first songs was with Petey Pablo called "Don't Mess With My Radio". Then she had her big hit called "Don't Mess With My Man". I know isn't she a control freak. So I guess she stopped that a little with her new song "OK".

Canada was apparently their most successful market. Their second album Aquarius did really well here too. I was a huge fan :o...damn should've come out right then and there

It did skyrocket them to stardom, they were huuuge...if not for the weird managerial fighting and one of them getting pregnant, they'd still be big. They had more hits actually, just that they made only two videos in English.

Wasn't Kandi the lead singer??

LaTocha Scott, the heavy set one, was considered the lead singer when Jermaine Dupri formed the band in 1992. LaTocha went solo in 1998. LaTocha's sister Tamika was also in Xscape (she sits with her back to Kandi in the pic I posted).

"Don't Say You Love Me" - M2M (They had another song chart in OZ but not sure if they are big back in Europe)

Don't really think they are one hit wonders. Quite successful in Asia I think and I :hearts: them.
