Dan said he wanted to start learning Dutch, and I told him about my old thread on Sanex... if anyone remembers it. :D And so he asked me to start another thread on here... so Dan, some Dutch basics:

Hoi - hello
Goeiedag - Hello/Good day
Goeie morgen - good morning
goeie avond - good afternoon
goeie nacht - good night (but you only say this if someone is going to bed).
Hoe gaat het? - How are you?
goed - good
slecht - bad
you are crazy - jij bent gek (well, could come in handy, knowing the posters on here)! ;)

another thing is how to pronounce it....

:lol: Well, I've had classes before, and been to Holland 4 times, so I can pronounce it fairly well (so my Dutch friends tell me anyway), but I started off learning in a thread like this, and when I had actual lessons, I found it helped me being able to at least read some Dutch stuff, coz then I could concentrate more on my pronunciation!

so would 'youre naughty' be:
jouw foei ??

no, it's jij bent foei (you are naughty), but you were close. jouw is "you" but kinda formal.

In Dutch they have formal and informal words for "you". (Formal for meetings and that sort of thing, and informal for with your freidns, colleagues).

ie Dank u wel is the formal way for saying thank you. You can also say dank je wel, which is informal. :D

no, I wanted to learn German in high school though. But I did know a fair bit of German anyway, thanks to the net - I used to sit up all night having conversations in German with a German guy and Danny Schnyder! :lol:

fish = vis
sheep = schaap
horse = paard
pig = varken
bear = beer
butterfly = vlinder
penguin = pinguin
rabbit = konijn
lion = leeuw
tiger = tijger

There's also a television programma here where immigrants learn the dutch language just like we did when we where really young ato school...
which of the following words are pronounced with a B and which with a P?
- schaap (sheep)
- beter (better)
- appel (apple)
- aardbei (strawberry)
hahahahaha

And another one: when to use DE and when HET?
- de/het huisje (house)
- de/het boomstronk (piece of a tree :) )
- de/het konijnen (bunnies)
- de/het water

And wheb do you use ei and when ij?
- eiskonijn/ijskonijn
- waterlijding/waterleiding (watersystem)
- ei/ij (egg) :)

and a difficult one:
- kleinigheid/kleinighijd/klijnigheid/klijnighijd?

Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (successsss)

Ooh I remember that thread :lol:

I should correct something..."Jij bent foei" so ain't Dutch :tape:
It should be "jij bent stout", foei is a way to say you shouldn't do something but it's used only against little kids.

no, it's jij bent foei (you are naughty), but you were close. jouw is "you" but kinda formal.

In Dutch they have formal and informal words for "you". (Formal for meetings and that sort of thing, and informal for with your freidns, colleagues).

ie Dank u wel is the formal way for saying thank you. You can also say dank je wel, which is informal. :D
Erm...Jij bent foei makes no sense whatsoever. :p

You're naughty would be "Jij bent ondeugend". Foei is actually most used to say to dogs when they do something they shouldn't do. :p

But you cannot actually be a foei. ;)
