View Full Version : Why do a lot of people say Julia Roberts is an average actress?

I think its because she is so successful and popular. But hello.....you can be popular and still be a really good actress. I personally think she is one of the all-time greats. Her films are brilliant and are always commercially successful. :worship: :worship: I love you, Julia. She puts a smile on my face everytime I see her. :hearts:

She seems to play the same role over and over again. To me, the definition of a great actress is when after watching the film you can't think of anyone else in the world that could have played that role. In my opinion, save for Erin Brokovich, none of Julia's roles have been tailored for her exclusively. I don't know that I'd even call her average.

Pretty Women - great movie
BEst Friends Wedding - loved it
Erin Brokovich - not my type of movie, but she was great in it!!
Oceans 11 - small role but still did good

Hmm...

I'm conflicted because there are better actresses like Angela Basset for example but Julia has a niche... her performance in Erin Brokovich was great as well as The Pelican Brief. She plays strong women with the occassional ditz role like My Best Friend's Wedding. She's a local gal, too, so I can't hate on her too much.

I think her emotional roles are her strongest ones like Brokovich, Sleeping with the Enemy and the scene in Pretty Woman when she is shunned at the boutique by the hoity toity saleswomen. Also in the Pelican Brief when a guy that she goes out on a date with is killed by a car bomb.

That said... she's no Cameron Diaz who I perceive to have ZERO, usable talent... she's no Renee Zellweger who makes a bunch of faces (with the exception of Bridget Jones) and calls it acting but she's no Angela Basset or Susan Sarandon, who are my standards of what a good actress is.

She's a tweener who does her job well enough by entertaining me. :bounce: She's capable of moments of brilliance but she doesn't do it consistently. Damn, she's human after all.

It's pointless discussing about the quality in Hollywood when main priority is making money. Average movie viewer will pick quantity over quality therefore the scripts, movies are based on that theory. First you need a good script - without those even a great actress/actor can look poorly!

which is exactly why we'd call her average...she's ok but not as talented as the very good ones...there are many actresses that are better:
nicole kidman, scarlett johansson, sharon stone (her role in casino :o ), jennifer jason leigh even...to name a few other ones, and we're not even talking about the older generations....
