you a bit wrong there. As she did get a WC for Aus Open it does count on her allotted total of events. Doesnt matter if its a qual or a maindraw WC, the tourn counts.

Got to see her play at Bendigo a while back and she looked ok. Compact strokes and tries to smack on both sides. Serves OK but nothing special. Movement looked OK too, she certainly can generate some power off the ground. Short balls porbably need a little work but that's to be expected.

Very fiesty though and digs for every point. Her match against Admaczak she at times pumped her fist directly at Monique which I found funny for a 15 y/o to do to someone in their 20's!!

Shayna has fallen in a big hole since bendigo don't know whats going wrong but has lost easily to low ranked juniors at the last few events she has played in asia. Hopefully Bendigo wasn't just a fluke & help from out of form opponents and she can get back on track soon!

No doubt has tasted a bit of the big time at bendigo and probably suffering a let-down and some motivation playing juniors (because of age restrictions)when she would like to slug it out in the seniors.

Where is she?? Not playing the 25K's??
Whoever's advising her & helping with her schedule needs a kick up the arse!!
She should've concentrated on the senior tour after Bendigo instead of wasting her time in the juniors. At the end of her career who's really going to remember her junior results anyway & how much good would they be doing her in the long run? Why is it that the overseas players aren't scared of getting out there at a young age, then you look at players like Shayna  ?? I hope Holly Cao & Shannon Golds have brains!!

I must admit I'd pretty much given up on Shayna. Why the hell would u get R.U in a $50K only to not play another senior match for 8 months. Anyway.
Pt Pirie:
Q1: (1) Shayna d. Wendy Kong (AUS) - 6-1,6-1
Q2: (1) Shayna d. Sarah Benad (AUS) - 6-0,6-1
QR: (1) Shayna d. Nina Munch Soegaard (NOR) - 1-6,6-1,6-3

MD - 1r: (Q) Christine Sperling d. (Q) Shayna - 6-4,6-3.
This will put her up from 522 to around 511.

No doubles this week.

Can she play much senior ITF's this year?? Wouldn't the age rules be very restrictive for a 16-17 year old?

Admittedly it'll would be nice if she could play more than 5!! But I heard around the junior traps she had a horror patch around Wimbledon and maybe preferred to train through the bad form than wasting senior tournaments and bottoming out.

She turned 16 this year...

She's got a bright future but I think we all shouldn't be reading too much into the Bendigo final, as it was arguably the weakest $50K of the year. Still, it was an amazing effort :)

Should've capitalised on the higher ranking as a result of Bendigo, to at least enter some overseas ITF's throughout the year! So in that respect, her scheduling has certainly been rather, well, shit.

Wildcard Shayna McDowell was the last Australian to be knocked out of the Richard Luton Properties Canberra International today after she was beaten 6-3, 6-1 by lucky loser Yvonne Meusburger of Austria.

McDowell had been preparing to play tournament third seed Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic, but when Safarova was forced to withdraw with an adductor muscle strain she was suddenly pitted against Meusburger.

"The last three days I had prepared for Safarova," McDowell said. "I have been hitting with a left hander, I had a game planned sorted out, I had practised serving to a left hander and then she pulled out.

"It made it hard to prepare mentally, but it is not an excuse, because I still started the match strongly. Then I just seemed to lose patience and I donít really have the experience of some of these higher ranked girls."

McDowell, 16, will now head to Melbourne where she has a wildcard into Australian Open qualifying.

"I feel fairly good about my chances," McDowell said. "I started well but then I lost my way and thatís a bit confusing to me at the moment.

"It is disappointing, because I thought there was a real opportunity for me today."

For some stupid reason, Shayna's not entered the Sydney $25k next month & probably Gosford the week after.
Look for a huge rankings drop as the points for making the finals of Bendigo last year come off!!
As we know, it really doesn't matter what Shayna does for next 2 years. She doesn't have to earn her wc's by performing well on the senior circuit. She can fart arse about with the other juniors such as Olivia Lukaszewicz.
This seems like a great plan for the long term though, doesn't it!

Shayna's gonna turn 17 this yr, time she really started playing more on the ITF's
cant stay in juniors forever.
seems like most of the Aussie girls are just like the Brit girls, living off handouts of WC, and then trying to get a WC for Aus Open maindraw.

today she lost to 14 yr old, 8th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (she won both Aussie G1's in last two weeks)

Here is an article from yesterday's Sunshine Coast Daily:

Teen tackles tour

27.10.2006

By JON TUXWORTH

TANAWHA tennis product Shayna McDowell may currently be confined to her room studying for her Year 12 exams, but she plans to give her passport a serious workout in 2007.

The 17-year-old, seeded number one for the Caloundra City Open starting today, plans to make her debut on the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) tour next year.

“I’ve only got a week and a half to go and then I’ll really start to focus on my tennis,” she said. “Next year I’m planning on travelling the whole year and hopefully the next year as well.

“It’s very exciting.”

McDowell has already won Australian Money Tour events at Caloundra and Kawana this year and plans to clinch the Coast trifecta by defending the Caloundra City Open title she first won in 2005.

“I’m pretty keen to win it of course. I’m leaving on Sunday afternoon for three women’s events coming up in South Australia,” she said.

“Caloundra will be a bit of a lead-up and match practice for that. Hopefully I can defend my title.”

McDowell’s preparation for the tournament has been less than ideal. She blamed her choice of shoes for the untimely end to her recent campaign in Victoria.

“I went down to play a couple of $25,000 tournaments in Melbourne but I had to come home early because I rolled my ankle,” she said.

“Playing on the rebound ace at Melbourne Park I wore new shoes, which was a bit stupid because those courts are very grippy. My foot got caught and I just rolled it.”

Now back to full fitness, McDowell expects her biggest challenge to come from the fourth seed from New South Wales, who also happens to be her doubles partner.

“Probably the girl that will be most threatening is Michelle Brycki,” McDowell said.

“We played in a fairly tough match in Gladstone (won by McDowell 6-4 6-4).

“We’ve played doubles together since we were 11 and know each other’s game pretty much inside out.”

While winning Australia’s richest club event is her immediate objective, McDowell admitted she had one eye on the Australian Open qualifiers in January.

McDowell advanced to the qualifying tournament for the opening grand slam event of the season last year by winning the Australian 18s Junior Championships.

She then pushed Jelena Dokic, then on the comeback trail, all the way before going down 7-6 6-1.

Thanks for the article OZTENNIS :)

Great that Shayna is thinking about her education. She was bagged a bit on this board about her lack of events on the tour. However tennis is only going to last so long - and nothing wrong about finishing Yr 12.

Will be good to see how good she gets with a full pro season behind her.

Well guys, Shayna the $A25 000 Caloundra City Open AMT singles and doubles titles on the weekend, with a dominant display of attacking groundstrokes and superior tactical prowess. McDowell dropped only 8 games in 3 rain shortened matches (First to 8), and 2 proper three set matches to capture the title for the second consecutive year. In the semi-finals, McDowell overcame 7th seed, Alice Watter, 8-1, and in the final McDowell overcame talented 14-year old Monika Wejnert, 6-4, 6-2 for a first prize of around $A2 000.

In the doubles event, McDowell (partnering Michelle Brycki) crushed Wejnert and Ashling Sumner 6-0, 6-0 to take top honours in the doubles event.

This was McDowell's 9th AMT singles title, and 5th AMT doubles title! Congratulations Shayna!

Unfortunately over the past few months, Shayna seems to be really lacking in mental toughness and her results have really levelled off (when she even plays). I think that she has reached the crossroads to some extent. At one stage she was clearly our top junior, but now I feel Jess Moore has overtaken her, and perhaps Isabella Holland is also on the verge of doing so. McDowell must reinvent herself, rise to the challenge and improve her overall game. What do u guys think?

from what i saw at ao qualies Moore is way ahead and Izzy has also leap frogged over Shayna! Hope she doesn't drop out as im sure if she schedules right and plays enough she can get going again!

Moore is clearly better, but Izzy has not overtaken her from what i saw. Shayna just needs to play more - she lacked match toughness when I saw her against Poutchek-scrag. Her groundies are pretty good, she just needs to construct pts better and be a bit more desperate out there.

She's so hard to predict because she's soooo inconsistent. I thought after she made that $50k final a couple of years ago that she would've been much higher than this by now.
Good luck to her though. Who knows how far she can go if those massive groundstrokes start going in a bit more.......

She definately has the game and potential to be Top 300 by years end IMO!
Definately is working hard, i hope still with Geoff Masters, she improved heaps in between when i saw her attempt at playing tennis at ao qualies and when she played at Perth ITF, hopefully she can keep going as i reckon with some confidence and momentum should be one of our biggest risers of the year!

Bump!

Well, yet again, Shayna is injured. She should have been travelling in Asia, and by now should be in the top 450. She is not living up to her true potential. Fair enough she has been injured, but you can't expect to make a living from tennis if you only compete on the ITF Women's Circuit sporadically (which is all she has done since she burst onto the scene). It is very annoying as a fan to think that someone with so much talent is wasting it. Look at some of her contemporaries...Ayumi Morita just qualified for the Wimbledon main draw and is ranked inside the top 180. Shayna has beaten Morita. Shuai Zhang won 4 ITF Women's Circuit Events in a row in Asia and is now ranked at No.152 on the WTA Ranking. Shayna had extended Zhang to 3 sets in Junior Fed Cup. Yaroslava Shvedova is top 100, and won a WTA title, Shayna took her to 3 sets at the Orange Bowl.
There are many other examples of where Shayna should be by now. I'm hoping she can come back strong at the Aussie 25k's this year. I doubt she will travel elsewhere this year.

Here is ana article from yesterday's Sunshine Coast Daily

Shayna back in saddle

16 August 2007
| By Jon Tuxworth (http://www.thedaily.com.au/staff/jon-tuxworth/contact/)

Tanawha tennis product Shayna McDowell’s ITF circuit campaign was just beginning to gain momentum.
The 18-year-old had successfully won through to the main draw of three consecutive tournaments via qualifying in Japan and Korea.
But at a $25,000 event in Korea on May 21, McDowell’s luck ran out, after she injured her shoulder during her opening main-round loss to Japan’s Remi Tuzuko.
Hoping the injury would improve, McDowell entered qualifying at Nagano, Japan before being forced to retire in the first set.
After a two month layoff, an unsuccessful two-tournament stint in the US followed in late July.
Now back in Australia, McDowell is the No.1 seed for the Australian money tournament to be held at Caloundra from tomorrow,
“Because I had to come home from Japan early, the last few months I haven’t been doing much training,” a flu-stricken McDowell said yesterday.
“I went to America underprepared and didn’t play as well as I would have liked.
“I have a six week block of training before heading back to the US, and the shoulder has been given the all clear.”
After beginning the year ranked No.743 in the world McDowell has improved that to 537, thanks mainly to a first-round win in a $50,000 event at Gifu, Japan at the start of May.
“The whole idea right now is to travel and play at the highest level I possibly can so I can progress and improve my game.
“There’s no other better way to learn.”
McDowell will head back to America for a two-month playing stint from mid-September to mid-November.

I wonder why she is going back to the States when the Aussie 25k circuit is on?? Oh well, I hope she goes well :)

I'd love to see Shayna play with her groundstrokes under control. I've been frustrated watching her in the past because she's obviously a talent, but has had a slow progression & those groundies can be completely crazy!
It'd be great to see her with a couple of nice wins by Nov.

Bump!

Shayna has slipped to No.622 on the rankings, but good news :)

I was talking to her today and she has been training hard in preparation for the year ahead :). Shayna is now in the AIS headed by Jaslyn Hewitt ()...she leaves on Sunday to compete in the New Zealand 10k tournaments and will then play the WA 25k's in March...her coach has slightly changed her grip so that it has less of an effect on her shoulder. The shoulder is going fine, and she was hitting the ball strongly today.

I reckon Shayna has the best produced ground strokes of any of our Aussie teenagers, and if she could stay injury free for the year, I reckon she could end the year ranked in the top 300. It would be good if she could get up to a similar level to Jessica Moore so that they are pushing each other to achieve bigger and better things. Since she is heading to NZ as part of the AIS Squad, I'm assuming Alison Bai, Marija Mirkovic, Isabella Holland and Olivia Rogowska are also involved with the AIS this year.

Here's hoping for a big '08 :)

By winning this match, she will re-enter the WTA Rankings around 1002. If she can play out her schedule (1 x 25k in Japan, 2 x 10k's in Indonesia and 2 x 10k's in Thailand), and remain fit and healthy, I can see her ranked back at around No.830 heading into the Australian 25k's.

Congratulations and good luck ;)

I'm not disappointed by this loss
1) She is back playing tennis
2) She won 3 matches
3) She did enough to regain a ranking (for now)
4) It doesn't seem like she is injured

Good news for Shayna fans :)

All is not lost.

She has finally had shoulder surgery to fix a problem she has had since the age of 12.
She is going to step back onto the practice court next month (March) for the first time since the operation. Seeing as she hasn't been on the ITF Circuit for almost 12 months, I wouldn't expect too much of her as she is 20 this year and probably lost the best years of her development to injury. But it would be great to see her back on the circuit, especially if she can stay injury free and a few good results come her way.

She would have to be 'inspired' by not just the comeback of Dokic but also to a lesser extent Welford getting back on the circuit.

She is still being coached by Zoran Dikosavjlevic.

Daniel.

Found an article and photos of Shayna from The Sunshine Coast Daily in January...

As a leftie tennis players go, 19 year old Shayna McDowell is not half bad. By her own account she can return up to 20 volleys and still has a hit twice a week.
It is just that the Tanawha junior's power game is in her right shoulder.
And that has been the bane of her existence for the past 18 months or so as a hyper flexibility problem has sidelined her so much, she has dropped out of the world rankings.
In February 2006 the natural right hander – who is "semi ambidextrous" – was ranked 461 in the world and seemingly working her way up in the tennis pecking order.
But in May 2007 in Korea, McDowell succumbed to a nagging shoulder problem that has dogged her to various degrees since she was a 12 year old.
She eventually returned to tournament play in Australia, and quite a deal of pain.
"The trouble was I have a shoulder that is too flexible and my arm can get into positions like behind my back and injure it (the shoulder)," she said yesterday.
The career of the former 18 and under Australian ITF Group 3 champion was literally crippled as she struggled to stay out on court.
"I didn't really want to have surgery on it, but it got to the point where I was thinking of giving the game away," McDowell said.
"The most frustrating thing was that there were players I had been beating who were getting right down in the rankings.
"They were playing 30 tournaments a year and I was struggling to play five and break through the 600 ranking."
Just after midway last year, McDowell finally bit the bullet and decided that in order to save her career, she would have her shoulder tendon pulled into line.
She underwent keyhole surgery that involved shortening the over stretched problem area of the tendon by 10 per cent.
McDowell says the shoulder is healing faster than expected, but she will not make a return to tournament play until later in the year.
She aims to return right handed to the practice court in April, while completing a fashion designer course at the Gold Coast, where she will soon move.
"I want to design my own clothes," she said.
"I'm thinking of calling it (her label) something simple like Shayna Maree – Maree is my middle name – but I haven't made my mind up yet."
As well as pinning her future on some sassy clothing patterns, McDowell is determined to cut a swathe through her opponents out on the court.
There will be not a lot of glamour in these battles – just the chance to earn some ranking points the hard way and play again the way she knows she can.

She's only hitting balls left handed so that they can get some action shots. ;) When she's not injured she is a right hander, and as far as I know, doesn't hold the racquet that way when she's playing on her favoured side.

It wouldn't surprise me now, if she has decided to give it away...a real shame considering her potential.

Michelle Brycki, same thing. She wasn't as good as Shayna, but she was going great at the age of 15/16, ashame she didn't go further with her tennis. She might be in the States now going some college tennis like Holly Cao, but I'm not sure.

SF: McDowell d. [1] Emelyn Starr 7/5 6/4
F: McDowell d. [2] Ashling Sumner 7/5 6/3

QF/ d. Anesa KOVAC [QLD] 6/2, 6/1
SF/ d. Harriet SHEEHAN [QLD] [2] 6/3, 6/4
F/ lt. Sophie LETCHER [QLD] [1] 2/6, 1/1 ret inj

Not sure how bad this is because Shayna said that she has only been back training for two months and her retirement was due to tiredness, aching joints and a bad back...she thinks she might have played a bit too much too soon. I think Shayna is in this part of the world for a total of 7 weeks. Her focus at the moment is 10k's, but towards the end of the seven week block, she has a 25k which she might play. Depends on the entry list of course (because she has no ranking) and also on her own body.

I hope she hasn't taken too much on with so much so soon...

Maybe she wasn't expecting to do that well week in/week out and she decided to enter a series of events and pull out of some of the later ones depending on how many matches she plays?

^^

To me it is a little bit concerning that she lost the last set 6-0, but I think that that was probably due to a huge amount of matches in the past two weeks and scoreline suggests first two sets were very close and probably quite long.

She is in the draw for a 10k this week (also in Portugal) in a bottom quarter loaded with all 3 Aussies. First match is against Mariana Correa (WTA#831) with the winner most likely to play Jade Hopper, sixth seed and WTA#638. Quarter final with Daniela Scivetti is the next possible match up and then a semi for the winner looms with Melanie Gloria. Should be an interesting week

LightsOut!

Shayna easily won her 1st round in her 3rd Portuguese 10K, meaning she'll have a ranking again! It won't appear til after Wimbledon, but it will be at least about 750 - could be up to 650 if she wins the tournament this week. And if she plays and wins matches again next week again, she'll debut even higher.

What a nice surprise this is for Aussie women's tennis - a bit like Bojana Bobusic coming from nowhere last year (tho' she hasn't done much since...)
