WOW! Su-Wei and Sharapova! Why is Su-Wei playing a 10k?

There's a Grade 1 Junior tourney in Japan the week prior to this.

I doubt Su-Wei will play, and I don't see why Maria should play a $10K event. They're both too good for this level.

Why is Su-Wei here ???

she's ranked around 150, she should be playing on the WTA qualies, if not there certainly on Challengers

Maria is hanging around another week after she plays Japan Open.

Eggy, Su-Wei was committed for the $5K event in India this week and she didn't even withdraw from it!

She must seriously have her entries messed up.

I hope Su-Wei won't play here, she is too good for here:o .

Su Wei? Why is she wasting time playing a 10K, she has the ranking to get into higher tourneys...very puzzling!

Sharapova makes sense, her rank is 532, 10K's are where she will have to start to get her ranking up. She cant get into any other tourneys with that ranking unless she gets WC's.

It's confirmed that Su-Wei will play here :o ,but good news is her father said she will concentrate on pro tourneys in the future :) .

Still good luck to Su-Wei here :D .

OMG, I seriously can't believe she's really going to play a $10K event with a ranking like hers!

It's definitely don't going to help her ranking, plus she'll only be allowed to play 7 more events (not including Seoul) after this. :(

It's played on clay though, so it should do her some good. ;)

Is GUNMA PREFECTURE the name of the city or town it's played? Bit of a mouthful!!!

Do you think we will see a Sharapova-Hsieh final again!!!

Mark, "Gunma" is the name of the Prefecture/State. The actual city name is "Kusatsu". :)

i. Players aged 15 to 17 years are eligible to compete in an additional one or two tournaments [15 year olds may play one (1) additional, 16-17 year olds may compete in two (2) additional tournaments], under the following conditions:
(i) The tournament(s) are allowable at the $10,000 and $25,000 ITF Women Circuit level only
(ii) The tournament(s) must be played within the player defined region (see attached list of regions).
(iii) Unless a player alerts the Sport Sciences & Medicine department of the Sanex WTA Tour in advance that she is a resident of a country other than her homeland, the player default region is the one consistent with her nationality
(iv) A player is only allowed to be associated with one region in each birthdate year.
(v) These changes are in effect for calendar year 2002 only. Any changes to this rule that take effect January 1, 2003 may prevent players from carrying over additional tournaments, as outlined above, into 2003.

It maybe can explain why Su-Wei play here.
Does it mean Su-Wei can play more 2 tourney, but only 10K and 25K in Asia
Any one knows

Su Wei has won the singles and doubles in her last 3 tournaments. Playing this 10k challenger gives her a good chance to make it 4 in a row!

The only player who probably has a chance to beat Su Wei is Maria Sharapova. And Maria lacks the experience and phenomanol conditioning of Su Wei.

Maria should be playing this event. Su Wei should be playing a bigger challenger.

I certainly did not know about this new ruling.

This explains why Su-Wei is playing here. ;)
She's making full use of what she's allowed.

This means that she'll still be allowed to play 8 tourneys + 3 GS after Seoul. :D
