PS Stubbsy, there actually is a national Coming Out Day - 11 October!

http://www.theage.com.au/news/tennis/always-ready-for-a-serve/2006/01/06/1136387626879.html

Stubbs travels with her girlfriend of two years, a former US professional softballer, having shared a long-term relationship with her former doubles partner, Lisa Raymond.

It has only been relatively recently that Stubbs has fully embraced her sexuality, and she hopes that by speaking openly, it will help teenagers who might be grappling with gay issues.

"I always say to my friends, 'Wouldn't it be great if everybody who was gay said they were? If we said: February 21, or whatever, this is the coming out day. So, if you are, you have to come out to everybody you know'. It would be phenomenal.

"And it would be nice if everybody could just accept that it's not a choice, this is who you are. You would never, ever choose this, choose to be gay. It's such a difficult thing to deal with and coming out to people and talking about it, and coming out to your family.

"But I don't hide who I am any more. Everyone in the tennis world pretty much knows who's gay and who's not; the only reason I would like it spoken about publicly more is that I wish everybody would realise that, 'See all those people you admire? Out of 10 of them, four are gay, and I just want you to know that your child can still idolise them'."

Stubbs was 25, which is "old, in the terms of", as she puts it, when she had her first lesbian encounter, but she had long wondered, and thought "maybe". Still, it was not until more than five years later that she felt comfortable enough to be open about her lifestyle.

"I was like, 'I have to get over this, this is not a phase, this is not something to be embarrassed about, this is who I am and I'm not going to deny who I am', and I think this is the point you get to in your life.

"I'd just like to be a little bit more open about it now because I want some 16-year-old girl out there to think, 'It's OK'. All it is is somebody loving somebody."

Rennae has her critics :) but her heart is in the right place. Good on her. Not sure if she has the profile in Australia to make big change but if her coming out helps someone then thats great.

Hope Lisa is OK with the article

Rennae did not "out" Lisa, but the reporter who wrote the Bulletin article did. Lisa knew the reporter was going to say Rennae and Lisa had been together and she did not ask the reporter not to include her name. She read it, and was ok with it. So I just want people to stop pointing the finger at Rennae.

What a great article!! I remember her match against Donna Faber in 90 when she qualified at Wimbledon. It was so close, 7-5 in the 3rd.

Don't think Rennae is that type to out someone anyway, she's says whats on her mind yes, but it's never personal or vindictive. She always has a reason for speaking out.

And nobody at the Sony Ericsson Championships this week has graced the event more times - this will be her 11th appearance, winning with Lisa Raymond in 2001 and finishing runner-up with current partner Cara Black the last two years. Join the Australian in her hunt for title No.56 in the latest Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Player Blog.

Monday, November 6, 2006

Welcome, everyone, to my blog and to the Sony Ericsson Championships! I have just arrived to Madrid from my home town of Tampa; well, my home away from home, anyway. After a two week break from the indoor circuit, I am fired up and ready for the last and final tournament of the year! Yippee!

After a long and tough year, everyone is ready for the final showdown before heading off for a few weeks' vacation. Well I am, anyway! It's going to be a great week of tennis, and I hope you all stay tuned for my inside scoop into the event.

Tonight's blog is going to be short, firstly because I'm writing it on my phone and secondly because I'm so exhausted after flying overnight and practicing some today that I can no longer keep my eyes open! All of you who've had jet lag know exactly how I feel. It's part of the job though. I spent most of my day in the physio room :) That's another thing that's part of the job! But at my age it's understandable, right?!

Okay, everyone, lots more to tell you tomorrow. Hopefully, I will be able to get online by then. Thanks for reading!

Talk to you all tomorrow! :)

Rennae (Stubbsy)

Hi everyone and good evening!

Well actually, it's good morning. It's 12.30am and I'm still awake! Yep, Spanish time... got to love it, right! If any of you plan on coming to Spain, I recommend it highly if you like to eat, drink and basically have a good time... but don't think about eating dinner 'til after 8pm!

I had a great day today. Woke up at 9am (slept right through my first night here) and headed down to breaky at 10am. Again, got to love the Spanish timetable; well I do, anyway. Had breaky with John Dolan from the WTA communications staff, and ate alongside most of the singles players who were getting their breakfasts ahead of the first day of play at the Sony Ericsson Championships. Just for your info, Maria Sharapova had an egg scramble with ham, as well as fruit. It looked really good - I think I'll get that tomorrow! And hey, it worked...

We had our first results of the tournament, with an upset to start. Nadia Petrova beat world No.1 Amélie Mauresmo. Now I, for one, wasn't that surprised by that win, only because Amélie has been struggling of late with a shoulder injury and is coming into this event without a lot of matches, while Nadia has been playing phenomenally well this past month on the indoor stretch. So, one to Nadia, and Amélie has some catching up to do.

Maria was up next and showed her recent good form is continuing against fellow Russian Elena Dementieva, with a comfortable win. She has certainly put herself in the driver's seat by winning her first match; she has to be the favorite here after her recent form.

Then the first real tough match of the tournament, with Justine beating Martina. A gutsy victory after her long injury lay-off - it just shows you how mentally tough she is after not playing for so long. On a personal note, cudos to Martina. What a story - comes back after years away from the game, starts the year without a ranking and here she is, in the elite event in women's tennis again. What an effort. Just shows you how good she truly is.

As far as my day was concerned, I had a few practice sessions, one on the main center court before heading up to grab a bite to eat at the players' food area. Wow, what a spread! I had some awesome anti pasta dishes and a yummy latte before Cara and I went out for our second practice session, then headed back to the hotel. Once back there, I headed to the WTA training room they have set up for us here, and had a massage with our massage therapist, Manya (I know, we're spoiled aren't we? But again, I must point out my age. And it's been a long year. And my body is, well, let's just say, toast at this point. So, I'm trying to hang on for a few more days of work).

After treatment, I popped out for dinner (at 9.30pm mind you) with my very good friends Conchita Martínez, who came to visit, and Dana Davis. We caught up over a bottle of red wine and some unbelievable food. I had a risotto with butter and white truffles - OH MY GOODNESS, it was insanely good! Europeans know how to eat good food... and the company was great. Thanks for dinner Conchi!

Dinner was over and I headed back to my room where I found a few lovely gifts from Sony Ericsson, New Regency Productions (DVDs) and the Tour. It's one of the great perks of making the Championships, that we get some nice goodies in our room from our sponsors - so to all of them, thank you very much :-)))

Okay so another day down here in Madrid. I hope you are all keeping up with the matches on Outdoor Life Network and Eurosport! Stay tuned, because there will be great matches upcoming this week. And hey, check back in here and I will try and give you some inside scoops on all the action or at least on my day!

Thanks for reading,

Rennae

I was thinking the same when she partnered with cara Black, who's quick but doesn't have anything off the ground, but volleys OK. Stubbs plays great with someone who can make alot of returns and allows her to cross and dominate the net. It might work out OK if Corrina can play the role that Cara does.

Years ago Rennae had some great results with Nicole Bradtke in fed Cup, because of Nicole's steadiness complimented Rennae's flair. Pity they didn't team more often!

Congratulations to Rennae and Vania for their great result in Tokyo! In the final, they were very competitive with Raymond/Stosur in the final, so they really could have a bright future (if they decide to play together).

Are Rennae and Corina still planning on playing together for most of the year? I know they didn't do so well at the Australian Open, but a lot of teams have some trouble when starting out (ex. Raymond/Stosur). Does anyone know when they plan on playing together next?

This took some time to find - no post since August 2007
But time to bump it - because at 38 Rennae was great in the final last night. Though her serve was a bit off, her volleying was first rate. Her returns were a little dodgy at the start which had Sam in the firing line, but she soon opened her shoulders.
The Williams had all the weapons, but time and time again, they were out smarted by the Aussies net skills.
Though Rennae dropped serve twice - she'd have to be proud of her performance - including a between the legs shot mid court
Rennae looks so fit as well....

Impressive grasscourt season for Rennae and Sammy :yeah:
38 years old and still in contention for some of the biggest prizes in world sport.
Good on her.

When she does end her career, it would be nice if she did it in Australia. Not that she would get the hype and fanfare that she deserves, but for us 'true' tennis fans, it'd be a nice way to say goodbye to one of our top players. Too many have suddenly ended their careers and given home fans no real opportunity to say goodbye

Daniel.
Jul 6th, 2009, 01:57 AM
I wouldn't be surprised if her intentions are to play the next Olympic Games with Sam, then re-asses things after that. Yeah she's 38 now, but she is still a top 10 doubles player and is reaching Grand Slam finals. Things are going great for her so I think she'll be around for a while. She will also want to be involved in Australia's recent Fed Cup resurgence.

Daniel.
Jul 6th, 2009, 01:59 AM
If she didnt have a stable regluar partner as well things might be different, but her and Sams schedualing and limited events seems to fit in perfectly with each other. They are also great friends by the look of it as Rennae seems to be in the stands for alot of Sams singles. Retirement wouldnt be on her mind!

Vicky88
Jul 6th, 2009, 04:13 AM
Why would she retire when she is still making what you would have to consider a good living financially. Remember, once she stops playing what does she do? Coach some player on the challengers circuit for peanuts?

She will ride this one to the max and I'm with her all the way.

OZTENNIS
Jul 6th, 2009, 08:20 AM
I never said that she is going to retire soon...
All I said was that I hope when she does decide to retire that she does it in Australia.

Obviously if she is making Grand Slam doubles finals and still loves the game, there is no reason for her to quit.

Rennae really has things to say and expresses herself so well. So much better than the cliched stuff we get from most gals on the tour. Pity that she's canned for it a bit. She's so passionate about tennis that she can't help but say what should be said intead of side stepping questions.

Golovinjured, I don't know when exactly Rennae and Lisa were in a relationship but I think it muxt have contributed to their ending their doubles team in 02 (although they played one tournament at the end of 03).

Yeah, Graf and Rennae were best friends on the tour. Rennae can be seen supporting Graf in most of her grand slam finals in the 90's (and she can even be heard in the 1992 RG final ).

Thanks Gee Tee :) Some blasts from the past there - Morton, McDonald, Byrne, Faull.
I know Kate McDonald was Rennae's regular doubles partner early on. They played a match against Graf and Sabatini at a slam (probably AO) in which a few funny things happened on court which led to Rennae and Steffi becoming friends. I haven't heard to whether they keep in contact now.

Dave - Rennae was so vocal in Graf's long FO final against Seles. I wonder if Graf found it a little distracting. Incidently Rennae was warming up for Birmingham on the grass but at Graf's request came back to Paris to cheer her on.

Nice to see that Rennae and Lisa have put the past behind them. I read that Lisa did find Rennae's behaviour on court very off-putting which put a strain on their on and off-court relationship.

I wish Rennae played more with Nicole Bradtke. They had some great Fed Cup results, Rennae's flair with Nicoles consistency. Pity they never teamed up on the tour as the wouldve been a tough team.

Well, fitness or not, Rennae's into her first AO SF since 2002, incidently the last time she played with Lisa. So clearly both of their games are still there working together.

Pretty good, they won comfortably from what I recall, but it could have been easier. Raymond still has a pretty effective serve, they both do for 35+ yo women. Stubbs looks even skinnier when she tenses her muscles to get ready to recieve. :o

Stubbsy's Fed Cup blog I

Tampa, 21 April 2010
Rennae Stubbs

Hi everyone,

Welcome to the world of travel nightmares, being a professional tennis player and, also, being a part of our Tennis Australia Team that is travelling with us.

As of today, I am actually in the comfort of my own home here in Tampa, but the rest of our team at this point in time is scattered all around the world, literally. We are all trying our best to get to Kharkiv in Ukraine for our very important group 1 play-off match against the Ukraine.

We have been delayed and re-routed and, well, pretty much inconvenienced by Mother Nature or, as we are calling it, that bloody volcano!

At the moment, Sam and I are both still in Tampa and we have been waitlisted for our flights all week. Sam is booked tomorrow night and I am not booked ‘til Thursday, putting Sam and I in there very late indeed.

I am sure Sam will be ready to go after coming off an amazing week in Charleston where she captured the biggest title of her career, but still not an easy proposition for anyone to arrive Thursday and play Saturday. But I am confident she will be ready.

I am not 100 per cent sure where the rest of our gang is at this moment. I think Alicia might be arriving today and Anastasia is already in Kharkiv after an adventurous trip from New York to Kiev and then on to Kharkiv on a Ukrainian Airline, guts I tell you!

Our incredible support group is arriving today and Dave, our coach, is arriving sometime tomorrow. I have to give a shout out to our Physio, Mel Omizzolo who got stuck in Hong Kong for three days and then flew home to turn around the next night and fly to Europe! Mel, you’re a trooper!

OK all, I will keep you updated on our travel adventures and of the week in Ukraine, stay posted.

Rennae Stubbs

Hi there everyone,

Well, I finally landed in Kharkiv and the whole gang is officially here. I arrived safe and sound today on the same flight as our coach, Dave Taylor.

I flew from Tampa via Washington DC and Vienna, and he came from Zurich after getting in from the States the day before. This weekend's tie has certainly been an adventure to say the least for the whole team and will be a great effort to get a win. But I believe in our team and our staff to get the job done.

Anyway, no rest for the wicked, I am off to the courts for a practice after arriving a few hours ago. Got to do what you got to do to be ready for the weekend. So, it's going to be a little short this blog, as I've gotta get going, but I will write more later.

Hi to everyone back home and, for all of you, we are all safe, no volcano issues anymore, just a hot team, ready for some action!

Later Friday ...

So, as you can imagine I am well and truly ready for bed. It's been one of those many days in a tennis player's life of flying half way around the world and then straight to work. After a great practice with Alicia we made our way back to the hotel for our first full team dinner, thank God we have Anastasia on our team, as it really helps with the interpretation of the menu and with the waitresses.

As always it was quite the funny night, full of our usual storytelling and laughter. Our team Doc, Dr Carolyn Broderick, had some cracker stories, including her days of cooking for Mick Jagger. Her “something is in the shower that shouldn't be” story from a few days ago in a Vienna hotel that, well, let's just say, we will keep this one to ourselves, but boy oh boy did we laugh.

Then there are the parental stories from Fiona, our team manager, and new Dad Dave Taylor. One of the really great things of being on a team, especially one like ours, is that we have shared so many memories and stories over the years that we all find ourselves never afraid to hold the floor with a good yarn!

And, sure, I might be prone to telling a few stories myself, but hey, that's what makes this week such a fun one. I would like to add, that Sam wore the traditional Ukrainian dress that was given to her last night as a gift at the official team dinner, hopefully our media expert Brooke posts that photo she took, because Sam looked a treat!

What you don't know, is that underneath the skirt is a pair of board shorts, leave it to Sam to have a little Aussie still in her as apparently it was a tight fit!

Onto the serious stuff, Anastasia is making her Fed Cup debut tomorrow for Australia first up, then followed by Sam, watch the live action on FUEL network live in Australia and get behind the girls as they battle tomorrow to get us off to the start we need to get us into the elite eight for the first time in a long time where I believe Australia deserves to be.

Thanks for reading and wish us luck.

PS more stories to come!! Night night ...

Kharkiv,25 April 2010
Rennae Stubbs

Hey there everyone,

Sorry I didn't write last night, no excuse really as I was up till about 1.15am anyway with a wedding going on on the floor below and then a fireworks display from the wedding outside of our windows, but i tried to sleep. If I had known that was going to happen I would have had this blog done a little earlier!

Anyway, grumpy and no sleep aside, what a day for Australia and what a day for our debutante Anastasia Rodianova or, as we call her, Rodi!

Alicia at one stage in her match yesterday turned to me and said, “Do you think her parents are wondering who Rodi is?” Anastasias parents came in from Moscow to watch their daughter put on a display of guts and tenacity for her adopted country that I am sure they were proud of and as a member of this team for some on and off 18 years, it was one of the truly great comebacks and efforts I have witnessed.

To take down their number one player, who has represented her country in numerous ties in front of a very partisan crowd, was truly a memorable moment for all of us and got us off to the start we were all hoping for yesterday.

Sam then walked onto the court and after a slow start down 0-3 (I am sure due to some jetlag) as expected the world number 10 crushed her opponent 6-3 6-0.

Sam has once again proven herself as one of Australia's great Fed Cup players as she did what was expected of her after Anastasia's first-up win to give Australia the well earned 2-0 lead going into today’s action.

I hope you are all watching us live on FUEL TV back home, we are so happy that it’s getting televised and we thank the Fox network and Fuel for the coverage as we all want Australia to know that the women are doing you proud over here.

We are one win, hopefully by Sam this morning, to being back in the World Group for 2011. Wish us luck everyone and cheer loudly from home.

Thanks for reading,

Stubbsy

Interesting quote from Alicia and interesting that Rennae posted it. Not sure they should hint that Rodi often doesn't fight in her matches. Both gals have put their fair share of average matches in, over the years.

^ No, she meant that they wouldn't know who "Rodi" is because that is what the girls would've been shouting when cheering her on. Her Russian parents would probably never have heard the term "Rodi" before.

Stubbsy's blog part IV

Kharkiv,27 April 2010
Rennae Stubbs

Hi everyone,

It’s the morning after the victorious weekend. What a fantastic result for our Fed Cup team. The win was anchored by our world number 10 Sam Stosur and a terrific win by our rookie, Anastasia Rodionova. Now we are finally back into the World Group.

It’s been a long time coming and I have been around for it all, but we have finally achieved what we set out to do years ago, which was to get us back into the elite group for women's tennis.

I am proud of the way our team has stuck together over the past five years to achieve this goal. We have endured injuries, illnesses and retirements, but the one thing that has not changed throughout is our desire as a group to get back to where we belong.

I, along with Sam, Alicia, Dave Taylor and Nicole Bradtke have been the core of this group. and with the added efforts of our terrific staff, Dr Carolyn Broderick, Physio Melanie Omizzolo, media liaison Brooke Boger and our team manager Fiona Luscombe have seen it all. From our Bangkok trips, to Korea, Perth, Mildura and Switzerland, we’ve done it all.

And with the efforts of our rookie, Aussie Anastasia, and the team, winning the Fed Cup has become a reality.

I want to thank everyone on our team for making the journey a fun and at times nerve-racking occasion but, in the end, one that will always stay so vivid and memorable in our minds.

I hope we as a group and your support at home will continue and women's tennis in Australia will continue to grow. We have seen how this format brings out the best in us as individuals, but even more so as friends and teammates. Everyone on the team has pulled their weight and added to our success.

Australia Fed Cup champs in 2011? We will see ...

Thanks for the support back home everyone, all the best,

Stubbsy
