Claudine Schaul and Mandy Minelle both qualify to play maindraw.
Mandy will play her first career WTA maindraw match against Anna-Lena.
Anne Kremer lost last week to Jelena Dokic who lost to Anne in their last three H2H.

(2) Anna-Lena Groenefeld (GER) d. (Q) Mandy Minella (LUX) 63 64
It's unfortunate Mandy had to face Anna-Lena who reached a final just last week.
But qualifying for her first maindraw match is a great sign of many things to come.
Continue this up and I'm sure Mandy will be awarded with a wildcard for Luxembourg.

Claudine Schaul lost to Magdalena Maleeva with 6:7(4) 6:7(9) in first round of Open Gaz de France after showing a great fighting spirit.

In the first set Luxembourg's Claudine Schaul broke Magdalena Maleeva from Bulgaria to the beginning and hold this break until 4:3 than she got broken too  and both players hold their serve game to the tiebreak which was won by Maleeva with 7:4! :o

The second set began very bad for Claudine who seemed to be mentally down after the narrow lost of the first set and got immediately broken in the first game although she was leading 40:0 ( :fiery: ). This pushed Maleeva who realized another break leading now 4:1 in the second.

But Claudine Schaul found back to her game played her best tennis and realized what certainly nobody of the spectators or the live supporters on the internet (like me :D ) expected; 4 games in a row and the lead of 5:4. She leads 30:15 in the serve game of the Bulgarian but unfortunately lost a long rally which she had dominated by a stupid unforced error and unfortunately Maleeva egalized to 5:5.
Soon there was the second tie brek in this match and Maleeva had the better start leading 5:3 but Claudine fighted to 5:5 saved three setballs in this tiebreak and finally had a deserved set ball by 7:6 but she wasted this big chance and so lost this match with 9:11 in a thrilling match with a very unhappy looser Claudine Schaul who certainly would have had a chance to win the match if she had made advantage of her set ball. :o

She showed to her fans that she is back after months of poor results and will realize more than one suprise this year. :D

Mandy Minella had very bad luck in her first maindraw match against Anna Lena Groenefeld to meet the second seed because there was another meeting between two qualifiers and with a possible victory in a Tier IV maindraw her dream to get a place in a qualification of a Grand Slam would have come nearer. She lost 3:6 4:6 to the upcoming German which is an acceptable result. ;) :p

PS: Next week Claudine Schaul and Anne Kremer will play the qualification to Antwerp in which Claudine is the second seed and thus there is a slight hope that she gets in a maindraw if some players withdraw. With a good quali draw Anne Kremer will certainly win her first match this year and qualify for this important event in the neighbour country. :D

Good luck Claudine, Anne and Mandy for the future! :wavey:

Luxembourg at the Olympic Games of the small countries in Andorra 2005

Two years ago in Malta 2005 Luxembourg's tennis team won two gold medals (Claudine Schaul in singles and Schaul/Minella in doubles) and a silver medal (Mandy Minella in singles). This year the 19 year old Mandy Minella (WTA 269), the only professional WTA player at this competition, and the unranked 16 year old youngster Lynn Philippe were representing Luxembourg at the Olympic Games of the small states running from 30th May to 4th June 2005 in the Pyrenees country Andorra. :D

In the run up of these games it was clear that the FLT (Féderation Luxembourgeoise du Tennis/ Luxembourg's tennis federation) team was the clear favourite in the tennis competition although the two best players Claudine Schaul and Anne Kremer were absent due to their participation at Roland Garros.

All the results in an overall view:
Quarterfinals:
Mandy Minella (LUX) def. Johanna Hemmerle (LIE) 6:1 6:1
Lynn Philippe (LUX) def. Emilia Milovanovic (MON) 6:2 6:2

Semifinals:
Mandy Minella (LUX) def. Lisa Camenzulli (MAL) 6:1 6:0
Stephanie Vogt (LIE) def. Lynn Phillippe (LUX) 6:3 6:4

Final:
Mandy Minella (LUX) def. Stepanie Vogt (LIE) 6:3 6:3 (Gold medal)

Doubles Semifinal:

Minella/Philippe (LUX) def. Petursdottir/Sigurdardottir (ISL) 6:0 6:0

Doubles Final:

Minella/ Philippe (LUX) def. Hemmerle/Vogt (LIE) 6:2 6:2 (Gold medal)

The talented Mandy Minella who is in a good shape this year (increasing her ranking from 331 to 269) fulfilled without too much effort the "mission gold".

Even my newspaper in Luxembourg posted a picture of... Maria Sharapova instead of Anne Kremer. :tape:

By the way this Birmingham tournament is very mean considering points; Anne will receive only 13 points (9p + 4 Qp) for her first round victory.

I hope Anne will play the lower tournament next week in order to avoid the top players in early rounds and finally enter a quarterfinal or even a semifinal of a tournament. :p

 Wimbledon 2005!

Nice draws for Anne Kremer and Claudine Schaul! :bounce: (Finally they have lucky draws at a Grand Slam :D )

Anne Kremer

First round: versus Abigail Spears (USA/69), a player who is in a slump actually (losing her last 4 matches) and isn't really a successful grass player- Anne Kremer can beat her for sure :D
Second round: versus Ai Sugiyama (JAP/25), on one hand a good grass player reaching Wimbledon quarters last year but on the other hand a player who is out of sorts in 2005 and in addition to that under pressure to defend so many points- she is beatable for Anne Kremer :p
Third round: Kim Clijsters (BEL/17), a very tough opponent who would probably bring Anne's Wimbledon road to an end (but Anne Kremer is leading Kim Clijsters 1:0 in the H2H 6:2 6:1 victory in 2001 )

Apart from the difficult third round Anne Kremer has a nice draw and she should be able to defend her third round from 2004. :D

:worship: Good luck Anne! :worship:

Claudine Schaul

First round: LL (Krajicek being injured); if Claudine plays like she did in the match against Klara Koukalova, she will zoom to round 2 for sure ;)
Second round: Nadia Petrova (RUS/8); a stubborn adversary, but Claudine could play free, without pressure

Finally a beatable opponent in first round for Claudine Schaul who has no points to defend at Wimbledon. :p

:bounce: Good luck Claudine! :bounce:

Anne Kremer (WTA/145) and Claudine Schaul (WTA/179) are going through difficult times actually ... there have been much better times for Luxembourg's tennis with Anne Kremer broking into Top 20 in 2002 and Claudine Schaul entering the Top 50 last year. :p

But there is still hope for better days because both players have Top 100 potential and aren't suffering from injuries actually.

So let's stay positive and it was a great delight for me to see the comeback of Anne Kremer's website: anne-kremer.lu (http://www.anne-kremer.lu/html/menu.htm)

Two Luxembourgish players are playing in Vittel (50000), Mandy Minella in qualification and Claudine Schaul in the main draw.

Mandy Minella (LUX/257) beat Danica Krstajic (SCG/398) 6:1 6:2, Mailyne Andrieux (FRA/336) 6:2 7:5 and Andrea Benitez (ARG/399) 6:3 6:3 en route to the main draw where she is meeting top seeded ( :o ) Sandra Kloesel (GER/117)

Claudine Schaul (LUX/179) seeded 7 was eliminated with 1:6 0:6 ( :fiery: ) by Kaia Kanepi (EST/246)! :tape:

I followed the final set and I was impressed by her fighting spirit although it was a real crime; Claudine was leading 5:3*30:0 at Delia's serve and had even a MP but she couldn't convert it and soon the score was 5:5. Then again Claudine realized a break but lost her own serve game. In the tiebreak finally Claudine was up 6:4 having two MP but she wasted them this time as well. At the end Claudine Schaul won with 8:6 in the tiebreak and I hope that this victory showed her that t she can only win such matches with the right attitude on cour! :D

Bye bye Luxembourgers! :wavey: :bigcry:

Anne Kremer/Kirsten Flipkens lost with 0:6 1:6 to Francesca Schiavone/Kveta Peschke  :help:

One of the most disappointing tournaments in Luxembourg is coming to an end for local players.

First of all Mandy Minella withdraw from the tournament and thus the young and unexpected Lynn Philippe received a quali WC losing with 4:6 4:6 to Andreja Klepac.

Claudine Schaul got another humiliation losing 1:6 0:6 to Sandra Klösel

Anne Kremer had a bad draw by meeting Dinara Safina in first draw and thus lost in a good match with 5:7 2:6.

All in all the Fortis Champions, first Tier II of Luxembourg, showed the actual dreadful situation in Luxembourg's tennis with Anne Kremer and Claudine Schaul well ouside Top 100!

2006 can only be better! ;)

The usual procedure every week, Claudine out :help: , Anne out! :help:

Last year Luxembourg had 2 top 100 players ... and now they can't even win some quali matches. :tape:

If this slump doesn't end soon there will be no Luxembourgish player in the top 200. :fiery: (Anne will lose 55 points this week from Seoul semis and Claudine has some points to defend too! )

Anne and Claudine are far away from the ranking they belong and it will be a very hard way to return into Top 100.

Mandy Minella lost 4:6 2:6 against Roberta Vinci and I'm satisfied that she won 6 games against a Top 50 player. ;)

Now Mandy needs to be more consistent because she has shown us this week that she can beat players from Top 150 (but she often loses in QF of 25k :o ). She has even a slight chance to reach Australian Open quali which would be really nice. :D

I guess Mandy Minella will climb up the rankings like this: around 160 (end 2006), around 120 (end 2007) and breaking in Top 100 during 2008.

Ambitious Claudine Schaul wants back into Top 100!
With new self confidence in season 2006!

After a difficult season, Claudine Schaul would like to attack again in the upcoming year in order to enter the Top 100 again.

In the year 1998, the woman from Garnich served for the first time in an ITF-tournament, in Denain (FRA). A year later the talented Luxembourgian stood in two semifinals in Challenger-tournaments and appeared on the 30 August for the first time, as number 718 in the WTA world rankings. At the Seat Open 2000 in Kockelscheuer, 1.69 meter tall player celebrated its premiere in a WTA tournament. The first participation in a qualification of a Grand Slam in Wimbledon followed in 2001. The upwards trend continued and in the following twelve months, she decided the Challenger-tournaments in Petingen (LUX) and Vaihingen (GER) to her favours.

A successful career developed itself. At the US Open 2003 Claudine Schaul was standing in the main draw and surprised in the first round by beating Anna Smashnova (17 of the world at the time). Due to her third round, her best result in a Grand Slam, the right handed advanced on place 75 of the world rankings. In 2004, the large breakthrough seemed to happen. At the „Internationaux de Strasbourg“ Schaul won her first title by beating nobody else than the current number one of the world, Lindsay Davenport (USA) in the final, jump up to career high rank 41.

A lot of pressure

The past season wasn’t optimal at all for the player of the TC Arquebusiers. The defeats heaped and the disappointment was large too. The 22-year-old divides the dreadful season in three phases. At the beginning of the year, it wasn’t running promising for the young player of Garnich. The youngest Indoor-country master of all times had many points to defend and the pressure was weighting on her shoulders. A year after the tournament victory in Strasbourg, Schaul was in a slump and gave away many world rankings places
„Subsequently it should have gone better, because the pressure faded, however one does not come out of such a, hole‘ from today on tomorrow.“From the qualification to the US Open onwards she performed a lot better:„I didn’t play good tennis to be honest, but I nevertheless fought, could win again two games in a row and gave myself confidence again. It was important to play again several games in the so called challenger tournaments. I played the best tournament of the year in Pittsburgh where I reached the quarterfinal. This was a successful year end and that made me courage for the future.“
On the sporting downward trend, the separation of her coach Norbert Palmier followed in March. First of all the player from Garnich believed , the Frenchman could help her to get out of her slump, but then the collaboration worked out no longer: „I believed firmly that we could come together out of the crisis and many people think, I should have separate earlier from Palmier. I don’t think so and believe to have met the decision in the correct moment.”

New coach

While as Norbert Palmier tried to change her game a bit, the new coach Simon Walsh would not like to shift the game, but rather file at its qualities. Walsh should arrange it now and lead Schaul back to where she had been already once. „Palmier wanted to diminish my mistake quota and wanted to give my game more security.
Thus my game became more defensive and I acted no longer with pressure. Walsh would like to retain to my natural type of play. I should continue acting aggressively and try furthermore to dominate the game.“
Claudine Schaul has already worked on her serve, that is often criticized,: „I have practiced serve games an hour per day a week. I have to work regularly on that now, so that my service isn’t only the start of a rally, but rather a weapon, with which I can get the control over the game, to point subsequently.“
Schaul obligated with Walsh a coach whom she knew for some time before. At the US Open as well as the tournament in New Haven in the year 2003 the Australian had looked after the Luxembourger already. „At that time I have worked only three weeks with Simon and nevertheless he was able to give me some good advices. We have the same ideas and are lying on a wave length. I had a good feeling and knew that the collaboration actually would have to work out. It was simpler to obligate a trainer, who I know than living in uncertainty.“ The former number 41 of the world denies the rumors, that she wanted to retire, vehemently: „if it does not run so well, during a period one thinks certainly over many scenarios. I however never thought of retiring, because I spent my entire life with tennis and it made me pleasure.“
Claudine Schaul found courage by thinking at the past, in which she proved, that she knew how to play great tennis.
As many athletes in difficult phases also Schaul sought advice at a psychologist,
who mentally should help her: „You must be convinced that someone can help you. This person gives you only the means, the impulse has to come from yourself.“

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d18/drimal_/tennis/Schaulator1.jpg

Important phases

Only mental training isn’t helping : „There are phases in which one needs different methods. Now a training phase is forthcoming. The next five weeks will be decisive for the upcoming season, because during the season, one has not much time to shift around something at its game“, so the ambitious athlete of the year 2003. If she would have prepared herself for the upcoming season rather in Luxembourg, Claudine Schaul sees many advantages to travel prematurely to Australia: „We have optimal prerequisites there. A condition trainer is on the spot, we do not need to set ourselves shortly before the tournaments to the climate and the time difference and this saves me the transposition between open air and indoor courts , what caused me previously always problems.. I would like to train where the best conditions are ruling
for my tennis and my season.“ It is the first time that Claudine Schaul ventures this step and the Luxembourgian tries everything to improve her shape.. After the training units, follow three tournaments in Australia (Gold Coast, Canberra as well as the Australian Open). After that Paris and Antwerp should follow, depending how the WTA ranking looks like. „One has to look then whether it is better to start in main draws of little tournament or in the qualification of big tournaments. That has to be decided first to the respective moment.

Overall the level in the women tennis field has improved , explains Claudine Schaul: „There are the top 15, that drop itself more or fewer ahead. Behind there are many players who stand on one level are following. This is especially noticeable in the challenger-tournaments where each game represents a high hurdle. Moreover there are many younger players who have established in the field.“
As by January 2006 there are no more quality points in WTA-tournaments. Previously the players, who won against an opponent who was better placed in the world rankings, were rewarded, with such bonus points.
To enter top 100 again, is a first goal for the coming season. After that Claudine Schaul, who is actually on position169, would like to get back to her high ranking (Top 50),: „this time I would like to remain also over a longer period on a front position“, noticed the ambitious Luxemburger.

Next stop on the road to the Australian Open is Hobart (Anne) and Canberra (Claudine)! :drive:

Anne Kremer will meet in first round quali Julie Ditty, a low ranked American player :worship:

She has a nice draw with Martina Muller in the last round and she is definitely beatable for Anne; thus everything else than the qualification would be a disapointment for Luxembourg's number 1. ;) Good luck Anne! :bounce:

Claudine Schaul took the wrong choice in my eyes by playing in Canberra (the Australian capital) looking at the rather easy quali draw in Hobart. ;)
Claudine has a tough first round opponent: 4th seeded Varvara Lepchenko but Claudine beat her recently in Pittsburgh with 6:4 6:1 and I am confident that she can win again. Good luck Claudine! :bounce:

Hope Claudine will play doubles with Jarmila Gajdosova which is her best friend on tour and a really good player. :)

After a nice victory over Varvara Lepchenko (4) Claudine lost in Q 2 of Canberra to Horiastopoulos (WC). :o

The season 2006 isn't starting good for Claudine and I really hope that she'll get it together for the Australian Open. :(

Anne Kremer walked through the quali of Hobart without losing a set (Claudine should have played Hobart quali too :shout: ):

Q2: Anne Kremer def. Pauline Parmentier 6:4 6:1 :worship:
Q3: Anne Kremer def. Anne Keothavong 6:4 6:1 :worship:

In main draw there were four possible opponents: Bremond (easy), Santangelo (easy), Brandi (beatable) and Koukalova (2) (tough).

As usual Anne got the toughest opponent Klara Koukalova (2) and I'm really angry about the bad luck again after last week's main draw opponent Vera Douchevina. :fiery:

Good luck Anne! It's about time for a Top 50 victory. :bounce:

Well Luxembourg's Top 3 may be off the radar right now, but I've noticed some recent results for our lower and unranked players.

Luxembourg's #4 Lynn Philippe posted 3 wins to reach the second round in Brussels ($10k), improving her ranking to 999 and her pro record to 10-4 this year. Which is promising news.

And two unranked girls, Lynn Blau and Tiffany Cornelius, each scored two wins to pass through the qualifying of Le Touquet ($10k), both losing in the first round of the main draw. In fact this was Lynn Blau's first senior tournament, and her second win came against Cecile Baijot, a player I've actually heard of  (although Baijot hasn't played in 11 months). As I said, these two don't even have rankings yet, but still it's nice to see some action from them and see them gaining some experience.

You know your country is small when the unranked active players start to outnumber the ranked ones!
