It appears that she will be playing here. Tokyo in the past has served as a shoulder to cry on for players who were upset at the AO. Usually by Martina Hingis or Lindsay. Hopefully she can rebound here with a title.

It was to be expected she'd pull out - too much wear and tear on the body to play especially that she's playing Qatar and Dubai next month as well.

Yes she had points to defend but remember she is playing Qatar and Dubai two tournaments she's never played before - so here's hoping she can add at least 300 points there to make up for her not playing PP Open - that title is so Sharapova's now *eek*

I think it's safe to say Lindsay won't finish her career at #1 - for me I don't care - as long as she's fit and healthy at the end of her career and it ends with a win (preferably holding up that Fed Cup trophy) then I'd be a happy camper!

TOKYO : Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova will lead a Russian attempt to prevent a record fifth victory for world number one Lindsay Davenport at the Pan Pacific Open tennis tournament this week.

Davenport, the American top seed and losing finalist at the Australian Open Saturday, is joint holder of the most Pan Pacific titles along with retired former world number one Martina Hingis of Switzerland on four.

But second seed Sharapova will be returning to a happy hunting ground where she won her first WTA singles and doubles titles and successfully defended the singles at the Japan Open in October.

The 17-year-old Russian starlet, a big favourite with Japanese supporters, also won her first professional title in the ITF Circuit series at Gunma north of Tokyo two years ago.

In their only previous encounter, Sharapova defeated Davenport 2-6, 7-6 (7/5), 6-1 in the Wimbledon semi-finals on the way to her first Grand Slam victory in July.

Before meeting Sharapova, Davenport must survive the top half of the draw, which includes Russia's US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, who is third seed; Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova, eighth seed; and Jelena Jankovic of Serbia and Montenegro, the seventh seed.

Davenport received a first-round bye with other top three seeds and faces a Japanese challenge from either Saori Obata or Miho Saeki in the second round.

Sharapova was drawn in the bottom half with fourth seed Russian Elena Dementieva, who finished runner-up in the French and US opens last season, and sixth-seeded Russian Elena Likhovtseva, as well as fifth seed Ai Sugiyama of Japan.

Patty Schnyder of Switzerland, Nathalie Dechy of France, last year's runner-up Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria and doubles specialist Lisa Raymond of the United States withdrew due to injuries, organizers said.

The contest gets under way on Tuesday.

dont be mean :p Sorry. :(

Back to topic: That's not a bad draw for Lindsay. Making it to the QF should be a walk in the park. In the QF, Jankovic can be very dangerous indoors. But Lindsay was playing badly in Filderstadt against her, and still won. SF against Kuznetsova is the first really difficult match. That could be really difficult if Lindsay isn't cvareful, but Kuznetsova is not known for her indoor play. Sharapova bleh in the final. Please just suck losts to Lena. I can't stand her.

Hey guts just thought i would post in this room as i dont think many people will be posteing on the Ozzie open one any more.

So lindsay's performance.....id just like to say that I think that she did extremely well to get to the final there was a pretty good field out there and it was an achievement in itself to make the last 2. However i think lindsay had a couple of chances to wrap up the final especially at 2-2 break point.....when she hit the backhand cross court and not down the line.....poor shot decision....nerves maybe.....or too much time??? Anyhow that was a crucial point and i think mentally it all went wrong from there on....

I have posted many times about Lindsays mental staes of mind....as she gets older she loses it, and she loses the will to fight.....9 games on the bounce is pure evidence that lindsay wasnt bothered about being a runner up or a winner....im not sure if that was a bad thing or a good thing in disguise...leave u guys to make your own decisions about that. The fact that she had no emotion and no "anything " in those last 9 games says to me that this coulds possibly be Lindsay grand slam and that probably....where tennis was "her life"......John now is:) There comes a time when you gotta stop and I think the final against serena maybe showed Lindsay some direction that it could quite possiblybe time to stop....the big tournies are taking too much out of her mentaliy and physically ....so even if she does make the final...she unlikely to win. Its just closing out the big matches shes unable to do...and its not her tennis skills...they are awsome its her bodyy that cant compete anymore.....expecially with the physical strenghts of sharapova and teh wiliams sisters.

However i do think playing the doubles was a bad move for her personl recognition of gaining another grand slam victory. However...her loyalty and friendship to corina whick is obviusoly very strong meant alot to her and therefore gave both a shot! Utter respect for Lindsay there :) that was a real nice touch.....speech even better. Which said to me that i think lindsay is now inher tennis life where winning is not everything and that her family and friends are now becoming the most important factors to her life and not tennis.

I read today that raquel (lindsay friend on the wta tour...shes a wta advisor), reported saying that lindsay knew her time had come today on rod laver and that retiring at family circle is what she shall do....i think this is the best decision lindsay could make as hopefully she would still be number 1 and go out on top...on home turf! Hence why Adam, Jon and lindsay were emotional at the presentation ceremony.

I think lindsay has been a absolute gem to watch....from the age of 7 (and im 22 now), she has been my tennis idle...and inspired me to push and push...and eventually play at county level. I based my game around lindsays....big serve...one 2 punch....whether lindsay retires now or in a years time she has been a role model for womans tennis and for myslef....a down to earth american girl. Her record is outstanding, and shes has every thing to be proud of......as a fan and a tennis player im incredibly proud of her:)

Here's hoping Lindsay has a great future after tennis....and we see her around from time to time!

p.s Gossipcom cheers for all ur pictures.....updates.....interview updates....much appreciated...as in uni at moment and doind exams....you were my life saver...sheers mate....bloody good work!
That goes to everyone eles too....loved reading all your comments!

By the way, I don't think that Jankovic will be a threat because of the way she played at the AO and her press confrence. Some said that she was VERY upset and started ranting and crying. She was very upset over the way she played Panova. She said that she wanted to pull out of all her tournaments and just practice. She also said that she was very troubled about not seeing her family and all that jazz.

Well, I think she did a great job making it to the final. She was in serious trouble in both her QF and SF match, and had to really battle through to win. In the final, I think it was a combination of running out of gas and choking, which resulted in a Wimbledon-esque tank. The third set was just ugly. Serena wasn't even playing amazing tennis. Lindsay just stopped moving and played like crap.

TOKYO - Four-time Toray Pan Pacific Open champion Lindsay Davenport will make her way to Tokyo after a busy two-week stay at the Australian Open. Davenport reached the finals in both singles and doubles, playing 13 matches during the week, but that won't stop the World No.1 from defending the Pan Pacific title she's won two consecutive years.

The American defeated Magdalena Maleeva for last year's title and Monica Seles the year before in the final, along with defeating Martina Hingis in 2001 and also in 1998 for championship victories.

Last year, Tokyo was the first of seven titles captured by Davenport that helped lift her back to the sport's top ranking. After a bye in the first round, Davenport will begin her quest for a fifth title at the event when she faces either Saori Obata or wild card Miho Saeki in the second round.

Davenport will be joined in Tokyo by No.2 seed Maria Sharapova, who reached the semifinals in Melbourne, losing to eventual winner Serena Williams.

Sharapova has already proven she can win in Tokyo, capturing the Japan Open late last year. She will take on either Maria Vento-Kabchi or a qualifier in her second round match.

Joining Davenport and Sharapova in Tokyo will be No.3 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova, who captured the doubles title in Melbourne with Alicia Molik and reached the quarterfinals in singles, falling to Sharapova. She will face either Nicole Pratt or a qualifier in the second round.

Also making a stop in Tokyo will be No.4 seed Elena Dementieva and No.5 Ai Sugiyama. Sugiyama will attempt to win her first match of the year after a 0-3 start to the year in singles.

This is the 22nd year of the Toray Pan Pacific Open, which started in 1984. World No.1 Davenport has captured the last two Pan Pacific titles and four of the last seven championships at this event. Martina Hingis, who is playing in Tour action for the first time this week at Pattaya City, won four titles and reached six consecutive finals between 1997 and 2002. Other former champions include Iva Majoli, Kimiko Date, Steffi Graf, Martina Navratilova and Gabriela Sabatini.

Yeah I too thought she did an amazing job getting to the final conisdering the battles she had in the semi's and quaters' ( i really didnt think her mental attitude would hold out against molik), but she proved me wrong...and thats why i thought she may have the mental capacity to hold out against serena....the 9-7 int he 3rd against molik agiant a home crowd = massive accomplishment. Just dont understant why haer form has dropped off since her US hard court season...she was striking the ball much better there than oz open alhtough she did play better in final.

Third set was hard to watch.....well im not sure what she was thinking in the 3rd.

what do u think all the crying was about.....from all her party?? its that what has thrown me??

what do u rekon her chances of defending her title is in tokyo?

Im possibly thinking a loss to sharapova.....to be honest i cant see her beating her......she has so much mental strength............to be fair i think she was th deserved oz open winner not serena....u agree?

But seriosly, if Saori plays Lindsay and (as expected) cannot beat her, I hope Linds can take it, if only to deny silly boot Sharapova

Davenport gets Serena out of her system in Tokyo

TOKYO, Jan 31 (Reuters) - Lindsay Davenport plans to get Serena Williams out of her system at this week's Pan Pacific Open.

The world number one suffered a third-set meltdown against Williams in the Australian Open final when she was beaten 2-6 6-3 6-0 in her first grand slam final since the 2000 U.S. Open.

"It's a tough loss to get over," the American said on Monday.

"But we're lucky in tennis to get a new tournament. It's about moving foward but definitely losing in a grand slam final takes a little longer to recover from."

Davenport, who has won the Tokyo title four times and is the defending champion, has a bye in the first round and will play either Saori Obata or Miho Saeki, both of Japan, in the second.

Williams rose to second in the rankings on Monday from seventh following her seventh grand slam title, pushing France's Amelie Mauresmo down to third. She is not playing in Tokyo.

Russia's Maria Sharapova squandered match point in her semi-final loss to Williams in Melbourne and is seeded second in Tokyo.

"It was really hard to get so close to a grand slam final," said the 17-year-old.

"It took a lot out of me and it takes a few days to recover ... you try to find different excuses for it.

"But I'm number four in the world this year and one of us will try and grab the title away from Lindsay this week." Sharapova overpowered Williams in last year's Wimbledon final and the season-ending WTA Tour Championships. U.S. Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova and Elena Dementieva, twice a grand slam runner-up last year, are also in the $1.3 million event. All three Russians have byes into the second round.

Henman only succeeded as a good player because his mum and dad are minted...and he had tennis courts in his garden and a coach fromthe age of 3! so only limited people will make it.....and even henman cant win a GS!!

I don't like that top that Lindsay has worn for a pre-tournie press conference before. Perhaps she has the same suit case of clothes that she had last year - maybe at the end of last year she never bothered unpacking?

Bally is a good player (just to echo other discussions), but like has been said, she has to stay healthy. The last player (brit woman) we had in the Top 100 (or I think even Top 50) was our good ol' Sam Smith. I think she reached a career high of 48 back in 1999, but then she was plagued with injury too!

Anyway, I digress - Go Lindsay in Tokyo! :woohoo:

I agree! It's always so hard to know what you are going to get from Elena on any given day isn't it? I loved it when Lindsay talked about Dementieva's serve in San Diego last year and was laughing and saying how she thinks it's a really tricky serve toreturn as she has gotten 2nd serves in the 50's and then out of nowhere you get a 2nd serve coming at you at 100! TOKYO (Reuters) - World number one Lindsay Davenport began her quest for a record fifth Pan Pacific Open title with a comfortable 6-4, 6-3 win over Japan's Saori Obata Thursday.

Russia's Elena Dementieva crushed Japan's Akiko Morigami 6-2, 6-2 to join Davenport in Friday's quarterfinals.

Defending champion Davenport, beaten by Serena Williams in the Australian Open final last weekend, dropped her first two service games in Tokyo.

The American uncharacteristically threw down her racket in disgust after squandering five set points at 5-3 in the first set.

But she quickly recovered and went on to clinch victory with a pummelling cross-court backhand to reach the last eight of the $1.3 million event she won in 1998, 2001, 2003 and 2004.

"To be honest, I still felt a little worn down," said Davenport, who suffered a final set collapse in Melbourne in her 2-6 6-3 6-0 defeat by Williams.

"A grand slam final is the toughest loss to get over. I probably had the biggest lapse of my career and it's going to take a few weeks to get it out of my system." Davenport next plays Czech Iveta Benesova, who battled past Japan's Aiko Nakamura 3-6, 7-5, 6-4.

(article is same as above except for the last paragraph)
TOKYO (AFP) - World number one Lindsay Davenport shrugged off the bitter disappointment of grand slam defeat to book her place in the quarter-finals of the Pan Pacific Open.

Davenport, beaten by Serena Williams in last Saturday's Australian Open final in Melbourne, said she was still getting over the shattering loss but came through to beat Japan's Saori Obata 6-4, 6-3 in 64 minutes.

"It was a really great, but demanding long two weeks (in Melbourne) and today physically I finally started to feel a little bit better," said American top seed Davenport.

"It's a tough loss to get over the final of a grand slam, the toughest loss. It's tough to come a few days later and play an important tournament.

"I'm really happy that I decided to come and try to move on. It's gonna take a few weeks but hopefully not too much longer to get it out of my system."

Davenport said she was frustrated when she lost her first service games to go 3-3 in the first set, and again when she missed several set points at 5-3.

"But overall I got through it, started to serve better in the match, which is the most important on this (fast) surface, and I'm happy that I actually get to go out there for the doubles (later) today and try to hit some more balls to get used to the court," she added.

Kelly - Will the final be live?

Lindsay's doing well this week, I could never have predicted she would be in the doubles final, and singles semi's after her last match(AO). It would be great if she kicked "screamapova" (copyright of foreva lindsay ;) ) and Kuzzy to claim the title here.

She is not. I have said it over, and over, and over again. She will not be retiring in Charleston. That was a rumor started by the Aussie midia taken from a quote which was taken out of context.

Lindsay won 6-1 7-6 (2). :)

I'm very happy with this scoreline. According to Eurosport, first set Kuznetsova just wasn't all there. But she seems to be playing very well in the second set, and Lindsay still was able to deal with her. And Lindsay came back from a break down twice to win. Fighting spirit is back. ;)

Well, I saw the match from 3-1 in the first set. Lindsay was playing some awesome tennis and I would say Kuzzie was playing crap but only because Lindsay wasn't letting her into the match. Lindsay swatted away Kuzzies first serves with little respect, but for the first 6 games of the second set, Lindsay took her foot of the pedle for a while.

Perhaps because she was coasting in the first set, Lindsay might have tried to see how much she could savour for the final. At 3-all in the second, Lindsay put her foot on the accelerator again, and ran down everything! Kuzzie served well for the last few games to take it to a tie-break, but Lindsay pretty much steam rolled the tiebreak 7-2.

Lindsay was able to pick it back up when she needed to - which is a great sign! I didn't see the Masha match, but the scoreline was similar to Lindsay's, but Masha seemed to have the slower start winning the first set 7-6, then steaming the second 6-1. Maybe it was Asegoe who ran out of steam in the second, perhaps couldn't keep up the high standard of tennis.

I would appreciate match reports from anyone who saw Masha's match. Andrew, did you get to see any of the matches?

UK time, tomorrow morning at 7.30am is the Tokyo final. I shall wake up especially to see that!

Okay the reports are starting to come through now - apparently Lindsay had her left leg heavily bandaged and took a medical time out after the first set - from what Reuters is saying it was a miracle it went 3 (especially to a TB).

It'll be interesting to see if she backs up for the doubles.
ETA: She wore blue today not pink.

lindsayno1
Feb 6th, 2005, 08:26 AM
ive just been watching the match on eurosport. Ive only watched as far as the end of the second set. But heres whats happened:

First set:
Basically Lindsay couldnt move. She wasnt moving to shots she could have got in normal circumstances. She had a slight limp and Sharapova was just exploiting her injury. End of first set she took a full medical time out. Even when she came back from that she was limping slightly.

Second set:
World no1 class tennis from Lindsay. She was playing unreturnable tennis, absolute top quality, like last summer style stuff. Shes still hurting from this injury though, not running for the ball when she needs to. But her serves holding up well and her passing shots are spot on!

Its a real shame she didnt win it. I dont really regard lost/won matches highly (in sharapovas case this time) anyway when theres an injury involved. But Lindsay would have won that if it werent for the first set. She played THAT well against Sharapova whilst still clearly being in pain! Way to go girl! you should be proud of that score line! Davenport had a lot of love service games

gossipcom
Feb 6th, 2005, 08:45 AM
I'm surprised she got to a 3rd Set TB - that was the amazing thing about it *g*

Lindsay and Corina just lost their doubles match 6/4 6/3

That's two singles and doubles finals in a row that Lindsay's lost - maybe it will be 3rd time lucky on both accounts :)
ETA: She strained her hammy (http://today.reuters.co.uk/news/newsArticle.aspx?type=tennisNews&storyID=URI:urn:newsml:reuters.com:20050206:MTFH07 244_2005-02-06_08-27-31_T76094:1) in practice and Adam wanted her to stop playing in that 1st set...

Davenport began her sixth Pan Pacific final with her left thigh heavily taped after straining her hamstring in practice and could barely run during a one-sided first set.

The world number one went to the locker room for a medical time-out after the first set and the American fought back to take the second as Sharapova's concentration wavered.

TAKE RISKS

Still moving gingerly, Davenport took more risks in an attempt to keep the points short and the frustration began to show on Sharapova's face.

"In the first set I looked at my coach (Adam Peterson) and he told me to stop," said Davenport.

"I took the time-out to get more support for my leg but I realised at that point that it was going to hurt. I started to go for my shots but I didn't expect it to stay that close."

lindsayno1
Feb 6th, 2005, 09:21 AM
ok 3rd set:

lots of love service games again. This set was all about the serving and the aces from both, but partic lindsay - she was on fire! More rallys on mashas serve, but not many on lindsays - she was putting them away too cleanly. Lindsays movement still hampered, but she compensated for that with her shots.

Tie break. She had an overrule from the woman on the chair for her serve which was CLEARLY in when i think it was 5-6 or something. Lindsay won it on her second serve though. This match couldnt have been any closer, but maria won the point when it mattered.

Seriously if you didnt see the match, get hold of it and watch it. If anyones not so confident in lindsay after the australian open, this will sort you out! seriously, bar the first set when she coudlnt move, she was outstanding!!!! If it werent for the injury she would have won - no questions asked!

Maria only seems to beat the biggest of big players generally when theres an intervention in some way eg injury (lindsay AND serena) and rain breaks!

RayRob
Feb 6th, 2005, 09:59 AM
Maria only seems to beat the biggest of big players generally when theres an intervention in some way eg injury (lindsay AND serena) and rain breaks!

Some great comment, and good point!

I was going to get up at 7.30am to watch it, but then when I couldn't get sleep by 2am this morning I thought "why am I waking up for a match that's already been played by the time it's shown on Eursoport". So, I set the tape and taped it but woke up at 8.30 in time to see the 3rd set.

I didn't know Lindsay was carrying an injury until I saw it on the BBC website and I was like  because from what I saw Lindsay was playing awesome! She was winning most of her service games to love and acing like you wouldn't believe!

Like you said, she was serving like last summer, but i would go so far as to say that her serves even better than that! More like the days of 1999! A lot of her aces came from second serves, so either Lindsay was really confident in her serve, or just felt she needed to take the risks in order to have a chance of winning the match! Either way, she did great!

Great point about the injury thing, ie. Sharapova's big wins coming when her opponant is injured. I guess that's mainly because Maria's game is to move her opponant round the court, and if they're injured then they can't retrieve the shots that they normally would.

The great and main thing was, Lindsay's serve was back - it was amazing.....watch the match if you can. The bad thing was, Lindsay was injured and Maria was serving great too! All in all, a great match and like Maria said of Lindsay (like everyone seems to be saying these days) Lindsay is a great champion on and off the court!

Lindsay, get some rest for goodness sake! ;)

OK, I just saw the match, It was very good. Lindsay could have won playing on one leg :) She could have won the TB, masha played great though. If she was moving like Lindsay, this would have been a straight sets affair, no question about it.

They showed Maria's speach at the end, it made me puke quite frankly. It was AWFUL.

"And Id like to thank the tournament offical for inviting me here, and all the players. without you nobody would even come here and play great tennis"

(looking at lindsay as if to rub it in: )

"I'd like to congratulate Lindsay on a great week, she's a great champion and did well in aus aswell" *pukes*

Lindsay now has the "I'll be happy to pack my bags and go home if I have to face her" attitude with Maria.

I hate Sharapova. I hate what she has done to tennis.

because she was injured and fought and almost won in a 3rd set tiebreak, that's something to be confident about.

I don't like Sharapova either, but you've gone a little overboard. If Lindsay wins then you love tennis, if she loses, then you're like a little 4 year old girl that screams because she doesn't get her way. Grow up.
