Does Maria remind you of Monica?

-Giggles
-Power baseline
-Grunts
-Huge fighter
-Huge intensity

And Maria has a shot at dominating the game too. I feel as if I'm seeing Monica's era all over again. Obviously, there will never be another Monica, but still Maria reminds me a lot of her.

Maria isn't Monica, but she has many of Monica's good qualities.

Both were groomed by Bollittieri too.

i see a lot of similarities, but she also reminds me a lot of serena when she first hit the scene as well, maybe a combination of both.

Yes she remind me Monica.

The same tactic, huge ambition, not the best movement.

About giggles- i'm think they're almost the same when Monica was in her age. When i saw her interview after Wimbledon win last year it was almost like Monica.

The intensity reminds me of Monica, but her game reminds me more of Tracey Austin. Let's hope Maria can avoid the injuries Tracey had. Oh, Tracey! What might have been...

I don't remember Monica. When she was a young player.
But she was great on clay. And Maria seems best on grass.

I would say no - Of course the grunting would make you think of Monica. But other then that (game wise) = not in my opinion.

Of course Monica is unique. But that said, as a HUGE Seles fan for many many many (ok you get the picture) years, I see ALOT of similiarites. So my answer would be yes. Maria reminds me of Monica. Mostly the giggles and grunts (that others whine about ad nauseum) and of course playing fearless tennis is what I see the most..and the desire. There is a teensy bit of similarity in speech too. Accented but fairly articulate and peppered with "definitely"s. :p

Btw, I don't feel this is an insult to Monica at all. And if I don't, I don't see why others Selestials should. No one is a bigger fan of hers than I am, as many of the old timers 'round these parts can attest to. Kinda nice to have Maria's freshness to stir old memories of Monica's.

Just don't get the Maria hate. Yeah, she does the "c'mon!" fist pump thing a bit much, but other than that? My guess is that the hate stems from fear (usually does) of her usurping <insert fave player name>'s glory. Oh well. There will always be new players, younger, faster, stronger...ready to challenge the old guard. That's the nature of sport. And as much as I love Monica, I am more than willing to appreciate the talent of the up and coming youngsters.

Maria is the best young player in the sport right now.
But Monica was winning every major she entered, except one Wimbledon, where she reached the final.
Maria has, as of now, only reached one major final.

Serena and Venus were carved on Monica Seles as are most of the modern baseliners. She really did change the game more than any other player ever did. :)

Does Maria remind you of Monica? No. The power baseline game is the same, but Sharapova is faster, and doesn't with two hands off both sides. She also doesn't move up the middle of the court like Monica, or exploit the short angles. And actually, she intensity and focus are very uneven. She can really get dialed in, and then have her game go off. She's dropped quite a few sets here.

And Monica is .... warmer.

not a lot. i don't think this is any poor reflection on monica, i don't know why people are getting so defensive. their games aren't that much alike. monica hit the ball leaning forward all the time, and maria takes the ball quite late which is why she succeeds on grass because the ball gets there so fast and she can rush opponents from a defensive position by hammering the ball up the line. monica struck early and leaning forward into the court exploiting short angles everywhere.

at 17 their demeanor is similar. they're both very exciting players who are quite divisive. what i mean by that is that there are few people who "kinda" like them. monica didn't fist pump as much or yell things out, but the grunt and the attention they get is quite similar. both are gigglers and have flat accents.

Yes, we all love the sisters' doubled-handed forehands.
And the bad foot work is the same as well!!

Actually I like Monica. I'd love to see her win FO one last time. She deserves a happy end like Steffi's. OK, her fans (a.k.a. "Selesians") are mostly nerds - but we can't hold this against her, can we?

I dont believe that for one second that you wish her to win the French Open - you are just a disease, that you try and spread to everyone else.

ummm, monica has some of the best footwork of all time. the reason she was able to play such an unorthodox style is because she was always moving her feet and getting into perfect position.

Monica struck more fear in the hearts of her opponents than Sharapova. I mean even Martina Nav said before she didn't like to face Monica.. cos it was like playing a tornado or something.

The grunts though do remind me of the storm Seles created wif her grunts, esp. at Wimbledon

That was a joy to read Earth Crystal. :) -as you wrote, both are/were full of desire.

Monica had MUCH better court sense and tactics at 17 than Maria. At 17 Seles had full command of the drop shot and could change pace.

And Maria can already serve and volley better than Seles ever could-which explains the Wimbledon title.

Before today i really wasnt paying much attention, but there are a few extra similarities with their lives anyway.

They both also moved to usa from their home countries at a young age to train at bolliteri's. Monica defected to usa, and maria has all but been ostracised from her fellow russian tennis players as "being more american than russian" (although the federation want to marry her).

but

No. Maria is better than that. I would say more like Graf or Seles.
