According to my calculations she has the same number of points as Svetlana now (3668)...but do they go with the number of tournaments played (favors Sveta) or the higher of the quality points (favors Serena)?

so what is her ranking?

they go by Quality Points 1st

Serena has more, she is #5 and one win away from #3

I believe it's quality points but hopefully Serena wins the next match and makes it a moot point.

that is what i am talking about. granted that serena does indeed win tomorrow and moves up to number 3, how can one then she is so much more commited etc etc like they do. mark my words and watch and see they will say look how dedicated she is blah blah, and 1 week ago they questioned her dedication. the fact that she is in the semis should be enough to convince someone.

I think she's back in top 5.

It says if she reaches the final she'll be at no 3 and if she beats no 1 ranked player to win the tournament she'd jump to no 2.

Won't she get quality points for beating the No. 2 player and making it to the semis? I've been watching tennis for the last 20 years and still don't understand the ranking and points system.

You have to remember Sharapova and Kuznetsova went further than previous years, hence why she has to get to the final or win to get to no 2.

Wow.... amazing jump. Even Maria... Top 3 already at this point in time.

Elena D has to kick herself, she could really have boosted her ranking here.

Good to see Serena back in the Top5 and that is without parts of the year where she missed due to injury - so if she plays a full schedule there is no reason why she cant be higher.

That's pretty weak, as it's not that difficult.
