NEW YORK (Reuters) - A New York radio station apologized on Monday for repeatedly airing a joke song that ridiculed victims of the recent tsunami in South Asia and used racial slurs, saying the piece was in poor taste.

New York FM radio station WQHT, or HOT 97, ran the segment on its "Miss Jones in the Morning" show. The piece used racial slurs to describe people swept away in the disaster, made jokes about child slavery and people watching their mothers die.

"You can hear God laughing, 'Swim you b**ches, swim,"' was one line in the song.

The hip-hop and R&B station, known for its "shock jocks," apologized on its Web site, saying it, "regrets the airing of material that made light of a serious and tragic event. We apologize to our listeners and anyone who was offended."

WQHT's program director and deejay Tarsha Nicole Jones, who uses the on-air name Miss Jones, apologized on the program and said the segment should not have been broadcast.

The piece drew wide criticism from Albany to New York's City Hall, with many lawmakers calling on the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (news (http://us.rd.yahoo.com/DailyNews/manual/nm/music_nm/music_tsunami_dc/14085601/*http://news.search.yahoo.com/search/news?fr=news-storylinks&p=%22Federal%0ACommunications%20Commission%22&c=&n=20&yn=c&c=news&cs=nw) - web sites (http://us.rd.yahoo.com/DailyNews/manual/nm/music_nm/music_tsunami_dc/14085601/*http://search.yahoo.com/search?fr=web-storylinks&p=Federal%20Communications%20Commission)) to fine HOT 97.

"At a time when virtually the entire world has come together to help in the tsunami tragedy relief, employees of HOT 97 have come up with this song," said New York State Assembly member Jimmy Meng, a Democrat from Queens. "We are disgusted and demand immediate action by the FCC (news (http://us.rd.yahoo.com/DailyNews/manual/nm/music_nm/music_tsunami_dc/14085601/*http://news.search.yahoo.com/search/news?fr=news-storylinks&p=%22FCC%22&c=&n=20&yn=c&c=news&cs=nw) - web sites (http://us.rd.yahoo.com/DailyNews/manual/nm/music_nm/music_tsunami_dc/14085601/*http://search.yahoo.com/search?fr=web-storylinks&p=FCC))."

An FCC spokesman in Washington had no immediate comment.

The piece was also denounced by the Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations, which said it had received calls from Muslims offended by the piece.

Station-owner Emmis Communications Corp. issued an apology and said the seven-person staff of the show has agreed to contribute one-week's pay each to tsunami-relief efforts.

The incident is not the first time HOT 97 has been accused of racism and poor taste. The station made headlines when deejay Star, now at another radio station, called Jennifer Lopez (news (http://us.rd.yahoo.com/DailyNews/music/nm/music_nm/music_tsunami_dc/14085601/*http://news.search.yahoo.com/search/news?fr=news-storylinks&p=%22Jennifer%0ALopez%22&c=&n=20&yn=c&c=news&cs=nw)) a "rice-and-bean eater" and satirized the plane crash that killed R&B singer Aaliyah in 2001.

Four weeks after giant waves killed as many as 234,000 people across the Indian Ocean region, workers are still pulling hundreds of bodies from the mud and rubble each day and aid groups say they are struggling to reach isolated areas.

I truly HATE the 'apology culture'. The apology means NOTHING. HOw about the program director donate, oh, a YEAR'S salary to tsunami relief?

Exactly how many single events in recorded HISTORY have killed more people? And this is in New York, so the program director KNOWS that people who have had loved ones die in the flood are intheir listening area.

I don't accept the apology. Start making AMENDS.

Well, an apology's not enough in my opinion. Like that makes it better...still doesn't change the fact that they mad fun of a very tragic situation.

I agree that an apology isn't enough. Really a suspension or firing is something that is appropriate in this situation to me.

Screw the apology...I remember the morning they first aired the song and listners started calling in and sending faxes and emails...(One listner said..."I hope you all drown in a vat of your diarhea") and all they did was laugh at the listners...I dont think they are sorry...it was a deliberate stunt and they planned on paying fines so that is no punishment. BTW, Ms. Jones (failed RnB whore) is a mentee of Wendy Williams...Wendy's husband is her manager...enough said...:tape:

That's shameful.

I don't know why but I'm actually surprised that they would broadcast something like that in New York of all places.

:haha: :haha:

Ms. Jones is a very stupid person, as are the semilieterate guys who work with her (Miss Info not included). This fool was the one who orchestrated the firing of Star and Buc Wild when they mocked Aaliyah's death in August 2001 when she walked off the show and four years later (and a few weeks after she gave birth), she jepoardizes her own job by mocking one of the worst natural disasters in the history of the world, mainly for ratings to compete with who? Star and Buc Wild, who are now on a competing NYC hip hop station.

There is an update on this tsunami joke mess that the MissJones morning show on WQHT (Hot 97) - FM. Station management decided late yesterday to suspend the show indefinitely and if the callers to the show this morning have anything to say, she and the show won't be back. Most of the calls were running aainst her coming back. BTW, Star and Buc Wild, her former co-workers who are now on a competing station, are gloating about what is happening over at Hot 97.

If these retards were sorry ion the first place they would not have done it. They should be of an age where they can tell crime and consequence theory. "Sorry" does not cut it. If I were a victem of Tsunami to know people were laughing at my dead mother with a "tree right through hewr head" sop the lyrics go, id have a heart attack. Its morbid, and beyond bad taste. Its malicious. Its good the morons have been taken off hte air there but its creepy they have been taken on by another? Seriously has these NYC radio stations ever heard of morals??

Seriously, why are human beings capable of being dumber and less civilized than animals? Animals dont laugh when other animals are killed, why do humans??????

Statement from WQHT-FM, HOT 97

NEW YORK, Jan. 26-- Miss Jones and the HOT 97 Morning team have been indefinitely suspended for the airing of a song that made light of a catastrophic event, as well as for comments made at the time the song was aired.

Earlier this week, Miss Jones said on the air: "I apologize to all who have been offended by my poor decision to go along with playing that insulting (to say the least) Tsunami song. I should have known better and I didn't. So I'm sorry and hopefully we can move forward from this, or I can move forward from this being a better hostess, because I am better than that, and I know better than that -- and you deserve better radio than that."

While Miss Jones has apologized on the air, in the media and on the HOT 97 website, station management felt that stronger action was necessary to demonstrate the severity of the situation.

Emmis Radio and Hot 97 will not tolerate such derogatory and racially insensitive content. This incident in no way reflects the spirit of HOT 97. The station has a long-time and well-known reputation for community involvement and support.

Emmis Radio President Rick Cummings said, "What happened is morally and socially indefensible. All involved, myself included, are ashamed and deeply sorry. I know the members of the morning show are truly contrite. They know their actions here are inexcusable."

Clear Channel took out many ads in Radio & Record announcing the return of Star and Buc Wild to New York, even citing their multi-million dollar deal (something like 17 million for 4 years). I wonder if the money and Clear Channel's monoply will keep Star on a short leash. I don't condone the tsunami song parody but frankly Star and Buc Wild have no business gloating because that type of shock jock publicity stunt is right up their alley.

What really shocked me was how the people involved in this incident didn't even sound apologetic.

For anyone who's interested, here's an excerpt of a online interview done with one of the now-sacked DJ, Todd Lynn.

Todd Lynn Speaks to Hiphopmusic.com

http://www.hiphopmusic.com/archives/000765.html

I spoke to Todd Lynn tonight via AOL Instant Messenger for over an hour. I will post the conversation verbatim in its entirety, and let you judge it for yourself. I have only edited his phone number and the identity of a journalist that was mentioned:

Jay Smooth: Is this Todd Lynn? this is Jay Smooth from hiphopmusic.com
Todd Lynn: yes
Jay Smooth: So you want to give your side of the story?
Todd Lynn: call me dude your rasing some bull$hit
Todd Lynn: I am not a racsist
Jay Smooth: what is bull$hit about it? you are on the song aren't you? and you're on the tape saying "i'm gona shoot some asians" aren't you?
Todd Lynn: Song
Todd Lynn: not really a side just the truth of what happened
Todd Lynn: not reciving anything from you
Jay Smooth: i'm here.. so what is not true about the information I have presented, are you not on the song?
Todd Lynn: you can call me at [***-***-****]
Todd Lynn: Dude I as all of us are very sorry about the song but we are not racsist we made a very bad mistake
Todd Lynn: I understand were you are coming from but trust me no one onthe show is a racsist
Jay Smooth: but it wasn't a mistake when you sang it and recorded it, it wasn't a mistake when you played it on the air, it wasn't a mistake when you played the next day, and then the next day, and the next..
Todd Lynn: That was the Mistake , how many time in your life have you fu-ked up
Todd Lynn: Dude lets have a hate typing open diolouge on the phone
Jay Smooth: if you are willing to have me tape it and put it on the website
Todd Lynn: How can i trust A guy thats been killing me and I do mean killing me all over the world ,the reason most of this $hit got to the point it is is because everbody is not informed on what happened that day
Jay Smooth: so what is the information they dont have..
Todd Lynn: we all are very sorry for the song! very poor tastse and bad judgement but none of us are bigots
Jay Smooth: what was your part in making the song? whose idea was it?
Todd Lynn: What I will tell you is Miss Jones had Nothing to do with the writing are producing of the song are the voicing. she works from home and has been doing that for several months
Jay Smooth: who wrote and produced it?
Todd Lynn: Not Miss Jones
Jay Smooth: does she not speak english? did she not hear the lyrics when she played it, for four days in a row?
Todd Lynn: your way off base with the race $hit, Mistake Dude Bad mistake And we are all very sorry. dont make poor judgement into race thing just by seeing what you have organnized i know you are smarter than that
Jay Smooth: So you don't believe that it is racist to call people chineses? And to say I'm gonna shoot some asians"?
Todd Lynn: This was not even a company thing, It was a badd fu-kup that we apologized for.
Jay Smooth:Actually you have not apologized
Todd Lynn: my comments were taken out of context
Jay Smooth: How can they be taken out of context when we have it all on tape?
Todd Lynn: do you mean Me myself
Jay Smooth: I mean whatever you think is taken out of context
Todd Lynn: let me try and explain again ,dude i am a big black guy who catches hell out here every day trust me I am not racist
Jay Smooth: i am waiting for you to explain but you are not answering anyting
Jay Smooth: if somebvody calls you N*gga, it doesnt matter how many times he says he's not racist

Todd Lynn: well let s say this you have shut my $hit down.
Jay Smooth: YOU did this to yourself.
Jay Smooth: all i did was tell people what you did
Todd Lynn: if you say so but all you did was jump on a guy that tried to be funny during a argument and like i said came out fu-ked up and out of context
Jay Smooth: so what is the context that is missing?
Todd Lynn: have you ever said nigga before?
Jay Smooth: no, i don't use that word
Todd Lynn: if you have are you racist
Todd Lynn: well good not many cansay that
Jay Smooth: why have you never apologized?
Todd Lynn: Got suspended!
Jay Smooth: you had plenty of time to apologize, on the day miss jones read her apology
Jay Smooth: and you had a week to realize on your own that what you were doing was wrong
Jay Smooth: but NOBODY was sorry until after their backs were against the wall..
Todd Lynn: because the beging of my stament got cut off by the mike s clipping in and out during the argument I did not even know the whole tatement did not go out over the air waves
Todd Lynn: $hit I found out throw all the press and the emails
Jay Smooth: what whole statement?
Todd Lynn: the part you did not hear because the mikes went in and out
Jay Smooth: Listen, seriously, you need to come up with a better lie than that. I've been doing radio for 15 years, I know what it sounds like when mics are clipping in and out..

Todd Lynn: yo call me dude what you got to lose

Jay Smooth: you are not answering any questions anyway
Todd Lynn: You are not acomplishing anything by making racist out of people that made a dumb mistake
Todd Lynn: I told you the truth
Jay Smooth: when was it that you realized that the song was racist?
Jay Smooth: and what action did you take?
Todd Lynn: Dude i dont know you and you have already started a smear action against me and never did any secondary work put my name on the web my personal info and just ran with tape $hit you know it had to more to the story than that
Jay Smooth: I didn't put your personal info out, somebody else did that and i deleted it.. and I have not smeared you, I simply showed people what you did.. what do YOU think is the appropriate punishment for waht you did?
Todd Lynn: I am a comedian Check my record i never have once during my act or on the air made any type of racial refferances or derogatory remarks about any race of people
Jay Smooth: What about calling Russell Simmons a coon?
Todd Lynn: Bro I am finished , personally and proffesionally behind all of this so what I think does not Matter
Todd Lynn: That was a caller

There is also a reporter from [***] who asked if I knew how to contact you or miss jones, I will put him in contact with you if you are willing to do that. Thank you for speaking with me.
Todd Lynn: no Thanks
Jay Smooth: Alright, is there anything else you want to say to the people who will read this?
Todd Lynn: nah afraid you might twist my words up and it will be the start of a new onslaught of problems more calls to my house more threats .
Todd Lynn: Some how this will come out fu-ked up also
Jay Smooth: You will be able to see in a minute when i post it that nothing is changed. And you can add whatever you want in the comments section as well. Again, if you are willing to put something on tape please let me know
Todd Lynn: man this typing $hit is killing me
Todd Lynn: and I said what I needed to say
Jay Smooth: Alright, thank you again for speaking with me, goodnight.

I personally found Lynn to be very evasive. I don't know why he won't admit that what he did was racist. The interviewer made a good point: how can you not be a racist when you were responsible for the 'lyrics' and saw nothing wrong with it while creating the song?

And here are just some of the lyrics from the song in question:

..All at once you could hear the screaming chinks and no one was safe from the wave there were africans drowning, little chinamen swept away you could hear god laughing, "swim you b*tches swim"
So now you're screwed, it's the Tsunami
you better run or kiss your ass away, go find your mommy
I just saw her float by, a tree went through her head
and now the children will be sold to child slavery...

If this was really nothing more than a cheap publicity stunt, then I honestly don't know what to say except that the people behind this PR mess must be incredibly stupid if they thought such actions wouldn't at least attract some heated criticisms. People make mistakes, but at the same time, people also pay for their mistakes.

Btw, the host of the show that aired the song, Miss Jones, wasn't fired after all - she was just suspended and apparently will be back on air 02/09. To be honest, I'm glad she's not fired. She may have been irresponsible for not doing enough to hose down the incident by forcing the song off air the minute she heard it, but still, she's just given birth and will probably need the money to support her family.

The only way that would happen is if their FCC license is taken away and the FCC isn't getting involved in this matter due to First Amendment issues (as offensive as it is, it doesn merit closing the station).

What a crock of shit. I love how they placed the majority of the blame on Rick. They should have all been fired not only for the severe insensitivity of it but for the hack job that the song was. Very amateurish.

Oh well, even when I'm in the New York area I won't listen especially with Star and Buc Wild further polluting the airwaves. They were one of the reasons I went with XM in the first place.
