i think vera made a good choice. it's hard playing with the top guns all the time. if you can afford it, a trip down to the lower tiers might boost up the confidence she so easily loses.
you know - win some, take a title to start the year and feel "ok, i'm doing fine, i'm an elite player, i'm a top 20 in something in the world, that probably means i'm good, and i can beat those motherf**kers"
plus, i really like her, so i hope she'll take the title :)

From Dokic board

From that website:
Jelena is engaged to Bikic, and she's supposed to get married in fall. Bikic isn't her coach anymore. She's talking to Goran Prpic (Davis Cup coach of former Yugoslavia), who worked with Sprem. Her surgery was successful, and she's coming back to the tour at the end of February.

She obviously won't get in European Indoors or Middle East tournaments with her rank of 129. Probably, she should start with clay tournaments at Bogota and Acapulco.

well, that isn't the reason - it's the result -
the result of a player that worked very hard and is on her way up.
for THAT she should be rewarded a WC to a big tournament coming soon. she doesn't need a qualifying WC as her ranking took care of that...

Russian star Zvonareva to play in Pattaya next week

TOR CHITTINAND

Russian star Vera Zvonareva who is ranked No 11 in the world has signed up to play the US$170,000 Volvo Women's Open in Pattaya next week.

For the 1.72 m right-handed Russian star, 2004 was the year she broke through into the top ten, winning two titles at Memphis and Bol and finishing runner-up at Cincinatti and Philadelphia.

During the year she recorded victories over Maria Sharapova (twice) and Jennifer Capriati and Nadia Petrova.

Zvonareva has also performed well in doubles, partnering Myskina to victory in Moscow and taking the runner-up slot in Memphis with Sharapova. She reached a career-high ranking of 15 last year.

Zvonareva will be seeded No 1 in the tournament and faces the prospect of meeting former World No 1 Martina Hingis during the tournament, which takes place at the Dusit Resort, Pattaya from 29 January - 6 February.

Chairman of the organising committee , Chaiyapak Siriwat, said the presence of Zvonareva would increase the quality of the tournament and add to the excitement on court.

"With so many great players taking part, such as Hingis, Martinez, Dokic, Pascual and our own Tamarine Tanasugarn, it promises to be a wonderful feast of tennis next week."

Another former top 20 player, Iroda Tulyaganova will be making a comeback after a long injury lay-off.

She has been given a wild card into the qualifying along with three WTA Asian pre-qualifiers, Nudnida Luangnam, Septi Mende and Pichittra Thongdach.

Iroda Tulyaganova who has played at Pattaya before has been a long term absentee from the tour due to a right elbow injury which has troubled her since 2003.

Limited numbers of tickets priced at 300 baht on weekdays and 500 and 1,000 baht on the final two two days are still available. A small number of VP hospitality boxes are also available.

I've heard somewhere that WTA is not giving injury rankings for seeding purposes anymore...
And to get an injury rank you have to apply within 4 months from the start of the injury. So - NO, she will not be seeded.

Does that also mean ex. Kim Clijsters will have to play Antwerp as unseeded? (I think no...)

martina will appear on the drawsheet as (wc) and Unr beside her name ie (unranked)

you cant just guev martina a special seeding because of what she was, she's been away for ages and to give her a seeding would be unfair.

it would be nice to see martina win a match or two - but if she were to win the tourny... wuoldn't it be a little depressing?
like - a few years hvae past, players got way better - the top 100 has more quality to it than ever before - and yet it's all just bullshit, cuz a player can come back for charity reasons and smash them to pieces...
so - it would be nice to see her play a nice, three set game against a qualifier, and then lose with grace and style.

Finally, is Vera Zvonareva playing here?

Vera is playing. This year, she has only won 1 singles match.
Against Nan-Nan Liu, who is barely in the top 200.
Then Vera lost to Vera D. 6-3, 6-3.
Vera Z. needs to get some wins, and get her confidence back.
