lee-waters was so impressive. sharapova had to come up with a some big plays just to finish the match.

lindsay is definitely a top 30 if not higher player if she can reproduce that form. very impressed.

Most certainly the match of the tournament so far. It is going to be hard to top that. Very impressed with Lindsay. Maria had to produce some of her best tennis to win.

Fantastic stuff from Lindsay, she fought tooth and nail the whole way through to the very last point. Maria had a lot of errors, but Lindsay did good to throw in some slices, and even move to net a few times which she does not usually do. She was thinking out there and mixed it up which I think threw Maria off. Lindsay's got a great game, and she definitely has the potential to go well above her current ranking again :worship:

Lindsay played like her ass was on fire, I thought people only did that against Serena, but Lindsay wanted this win over the Wimbledon champion. :notworthy:

I've said it before, I'll say it again. Lindsay Lee-Waters sounds like someone is shoving a pool cue stick up her ass  ;)

Seriously though, she played an AMAZING match. Even the second set wasn't as lopsided as it appeared since she had game points in half of those games. The way she scrambled defensively was great, especially since that's not her style at all. You could tell the off-speed slices were really pissing off Maria towards the end. And of course, she belted the crap out of the ball.

Top 40 (at least) here we come in '05!

Maybe Maria lost the first set because she was outgrunted quite convincingly in the first set.... she did better when she started grunting even louder. Maria's weakness: people who scream louder than her.

But more seriously, great match. Even that second set was pretty good stuff from both

Maria will need to improve from this match forward. Lee-waters was good, but if Maria wants to beat the likes of myskina and serena and kuznetsova, she'll need to improve a lot. She barely hit any angle shots or came to net at all.

Well done Maria you gave me a fright there for a while but you fought hard and showed the mark of a champ winning when not at your best. i will also applaude Linsay for her terrific play and never say die attitude. But well done Maria keep going girl.

Good performance by Lindsay. She can leave this tournament with a raised chin.

Well played Maria!

She's done well against two hard-hitting opponents, going all-out to beat her. She had to bring out nearly all her stuff to put the lid on the American.

Lee-Waters strikes me as one of those players who only plays well occasionally. If she played that way all the time, she'd be Top 30 for sure.

I'm hoping Maria gets some easier wins under her belt from now on. :D

Everyone seems SO impressed with Lindsay and her performance, so, even though it was 3 sets, i think Maria should be pleased and proud of her ability to win, fairly comfortably, 6-3 in the third. Matches like this, in the 2nd round of a Slam, can be the making of a player - Maria has just had a great work-out, in the afternoon heat, with a rowdy crowd, a terrier of an opponent and a one set deficit. She needs the match practice and needs to get more of a feel for this surface.....but i THINK she'll be fine now.....

Great fight from Lee-Waters! She played like she had a squirrel in her pants!
(I mean that as a compliment.)

Maria had far too many unforced errors in the first set, however; her ball placement was just off.

One thing about Maria, though, is that she never gets down on herself and never gives up. She rises to the challenge and improves her game when she needs to. I love to see her fist clenching and "c'mons" (or vamos!) because I know Masha is giving herself what she needs to do better. Not that she did it excessively in this match, just enough to pump up her confidence.

Really looking forward to Maria's match with Na Li!:bounce:

Might?

She could have easily pulled the upset if she had a serve.

Glad to see Maria was starting to find her game in the last two sets. Lindsay played really well though, and didn't show any signs of giving up although she lost the second one 6-0. It's too bad one of them had to go, but I'm still glad it wasn't Maria. :)
Good Luck against Na Li!
