In Bergheim, Austria, in this week a G4 tournament (under 18) has been played. There were several italians (Karin Knapp, Federica Grazioso, Caterina Marusic, Natasha Brescia, Corinna Dentoni, Astrid Besser) and three of them reached semifinals. Finalist were Astrid Besser and Karin Knapp, with Astrid winning 57 75 63. Astrid was born in 1989 and, as you'll remember, she reached quarterfinals in italian championship last december (lost against Nathalie Vierin).

Astrid and Karin won doubles without losing any set.

Here are the complete results http://www.tennisturnier.at/tennisaustria/tennisaustria.detail.asp?newsid=2577

Congrats to our young italian girls :)

Nice to hear there are some promising Italian youngsters in the wings.

I wish I could say the same about the men. I had high hopes with Filippo, Potito, and Co. but it's been a rough go for all of them in Oz with none advancing to the second round. :(

Another win for Italy in U18 :D

Giulia Gabba won last week the International Junior Tournament of Venezuela U18 (G1) :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
With this win Giulia is the best italian U18 (n. 26 in ITF junior ranking).

Giulia is also the best italian U18 in WTA ranking (n. 455)

Obviously congrats to Giulia :yeah:

I add that in these days she's playing the "Copa Kia Motors - Pony Malta Cup" in Colombia (another G1) and I hope she will play junior Australian Open next week.

Good luck Giulia! :)

Here is Giulia scores:
1st round: (5) Giulia Gabba ITA d. (q) Chen Astrugo ISR 60 63
2nd round: (5) Giulia Gabba ITA d. Eunice David CAN 60 63
3rd round: (5) Giulia Gabba ITA d. (10) Fernanda HERMENEGILDO (BRA) 63 36 63

Congrats to Giulia again! :yeah:

Unfortunately she isn't playing Australian Open, where italian girls are represented by Sara Errani, tonight playing in the 2nd round, while Stella Menna, the other italian girl playing Australian Open, was eliminated in the 1st round

Corinna Dentoni
Federica Grazioso

Finals will be in France 25-27 February. Good luck girls!

This is the first win for Sara and push her into the top 500 in WTA Ranking. I hope that it is the first of a long long series of wins :D

I also remember that Romina Oprandi, after has been far from playing for a lot of time caused by an injury, won one week ago the single title in the ITF $10,000 in Mallorca, Spain (her second win in career). Now she also reached the top 500 in WTA Ranking :yeah:

This is a fantastic year for Corinna with a lot of good results that brought her onto the nr 50 in the ITF U18 ranking :)

I want also to speak about:
Corinna Dentoni (1989, n. 44 ITF Junior ranking)
who won the Torneo dell'Avvenire (U16) and made SF in the Trofeo Bonfiglio, GA

Astrid Besser (1989, n. 53 ITF Junior ranking)
without an injury she could do well in Roland Garros

Erika Zanchetta (1989, n. 168 ITF Junior ranking)
Roxana Vaideanu (1990, n. 292 ITF Junior ranking)
They are coming on in this days: good results last week in the Biesterbos Open (SF for Erika and QF for Roxana) and now in the German Junior Open (they are in the third round after beating the seeded 2 and 3)

Awful day for italian colours

Today a lot of defeats for the italians

In Modena good beginning with Giulia Gabba winning in the first round match postponed yesterday for rain. Unfortunately Astrid, Karin, Alice and then also Giulia (two matches in the day) lost in the second round of qualies.

In the 29th German Junior Open (G1) another great result for Erika Zanchetta, who reached the final from qualies. Unfotunately she lost against the number 1 Sorane-Mihae Cirstea - 62 67(2) 63 the score. She also reached the semis in doubles with Roxana Vaideanu (quarterfinals for her in singles). With this performance Erika is in the top 100 of the U18 ranking.

tomorrow i have seen updated ranking, i know that wta adds itf 10000 tournament points a week later at least but i can't understand
why corinna has lost monteroni d'arbia points another time

the wta assigned her monteroni points just a week ago after formerly that points had been denied to her because of a wta rule that forbids to under 16 to have more of 3 wild cards for main draw and 3 wild cards for quali draw.

Rise and fall of the italian girls, ovvero the rank variation between the beginning of the year and now. On the whole, it has been a great season for our players: 34 of them have improved their ranking, while 20 have made it worst; 10 girls are disappeared from the ranking ( : Frappi, Virgili, Torre, Dell'Angelo, Cacciaguerra, Petrucciano, Polidoro, Di Lauro, Zavagli, Sandano + Silvia Farina, who has retired :crying2: ) but 24 have appeared (that with the rank number on a green field). Some players made a really great increase. Blue number means poistions gained, red one means positions lost.
