Women's tennis is still a mess as far as injured players go. The short offseason didn't do much to heal the injured players from 2004. :(

If Mauresmo and Davenport are knocked out of the AO earlier then the semis, I think that means in the semis Sharapova could meet Dementieva and Myskina could meet Kuznetsova. There's a very good chance it could be an all russian final.

The Qualifiers draw is on the website.

There are 6 Russians playing there: Bratchikova, Voskoboeva, Skavronskaiiva (spell??), Krasnoroutskaya, Byckova and Rodionova

Good luck!!!! :D

Jan 12th, 2005, 07:28 PM
One problem is..I don't see a single in form Russian player.. Dementieva seems to be in the best form of all, and we know that she always starts year slowly.. But then.. big AO matches are two weeks away.. That's a lot of time.. Kuznetsova really played nothing extraordinary before US Open.. And so did Nastya before RG..

KV
Jan 12th, 2005, 07:38 PM
Don't expect alot from the Russian players. Let's hope some players will excell themselves at the AO. Yes, that's what happened to A. Myskina at RG and Sveta at US-Open. Indeed, hardly one Russian to be in form. Best in form Russian would say N. Petrova since her impressive win vs. D. Hantuchova.

goldenlox
Jan 13th, 2005, 03:59 PM
Lena D. is playing well. Sveta and Maria haven't played.
Anastasia's loss was surprising. But she did that before the FO.

Winning a major is never easy.
The draw will be out later today. One match at a time.

i'm very excited about the australian open draw!!!:yippee: i can't wait to see it!! :yippee: :yippee:  imo, russians have a very good chance to win this grand slam especially elena dementieva (really on fire) and maria sharapova (they played a very close match at hong kong )
i'll be also very interested to see young russians like chakvetadze, makiri, linetskaya and yakimova (if she qualifies) make their aus open debut!!! :bounce: udachi all russians!! ( but especially my bepa!!!  ) hope there will not be a terrible heat ;) :p

Elena D is playing well right now. In a very strong position to take the singles title and in the doubles final at sydney.

Thing is, she hasn't hit her peak yet, which bodes well. Lets hope this peaking will take place for 7 singles matches at the AO. the girl has worked so hard, on her serve and game. It'd be great to see it pay off at the years 1st major :)

goldenlox
Jan 13th, 2005, 05:17 PM
They are all working hard.
For Lena, getting past the first round, and working her way into the tournament, is the important thing.
Lena lost in the first round of the AO the last 2 years.
This year - she's in the mix for world #1.

There's a lot to gain for several players in Melbourne.

DEETHELICK
Jan 13th, 2005, 05:42 PM
Yep, the Russinas have a very strong work ethic. Its all about the tennis.

I just want Elena to shine instead of being a constant Bridesmaid (RG, USO, Miami and Moscow - all HUGE tournaments)

One thing I have been particularly impressed with is Elena's mental game, it seems as though she is getting stronger and stronger.

Each 3 set match she played since Justine, she has not lost more than 2 games in the final sets. She's beginning to hold it together better.

goldenlox
Jan 13th, 2005, 05:50 PM
Elena reached all those finals. And lost first round at Wimbledon, the AO, and the Olympics.
The first match is vital for her.

DEETHELICK
Jan 13th, 2005, 05:55 PM
Lets hope the first match is do-able. Not a Vaidisova or a Ivanovic.

Good luck to some of the other Russinas too. Although I want this AO to be competitive and not about injuries and poor Russian vs Russian matches.

Elena defeating Venus would be nice :)

Elena's draw is bad because she's paired up with Nastya. The rest of it is do-able.

The main thing is Elena gets to AO healthy and recuperated from this heat illness. get better soon girl :)

Nastya-Lena would be a QF. Lena would have to draw a top 4 seed in that round.
None of those matchups would be easy.

well... sorry.... but she really brings down the Russians with her foolish actions.

Don't get me wrong... she is an excellent player with a brilliiant career to come, butwhat she did with the doping issue was really stupid.

Even if she is not using that drug for any evil purposes, still she used it, and she shouldn't have done so knowing about this tournament. I think she is conscient about it. I think the one who really lacked of brain cells in this issue was her.

Amazing, if one of our Slam holders wins it, she will hold two Slams and not even be in Top 2. If Elena D. wins, she will still be Only #3 with a Slam and two Slams finals.. Amazing..

Bookies at william hill went nuts in meantime. Just a couple of days ago Serena was the top favourite with Lindsay second, Mauresmo third and Venus and Molik fourth and fifth. Now, out of the blue, Masha is almost a joint top favourite together with Serena. What exactly happened that imprsesed bookies so mightily?

OK.. We've had better days than today.. But honestly, I've always been sceptical about prospects of our Moscow-based girls in Australia. Too much of hostile climate. Nastya and Lena D. also hate it. So, obviously Spain-based Sveta and Florida-based Masha would have always been a better bet..

Something that came to my mind..

First Slam of Roger was Wimbledon. Than he had a bad US Open, sort of adjusting to his new status of elite player. And the next big thing he won was Year End Championships..

It does remind me something or rather someone.. :) Oh, yeah, after that he won Australian Open.. :)

Unexpected losses by Dementieva and Myskina to lesser opponens in the fourth round of the 2005 Australian Open are very tough to take because both girls being in the weaker part of the draw had realistic chances to atlesrt meake the final. And playing the slow footed Lindsay Davenport in the oppressive Australian heat would have played to the advantage of Dementieva or Myskina.

14 Russians in the 2nd round. 7 in the round of 16.
This has been a successful tournament, for both the women, and the men.

Anastasia and Vera play Svetlana and Molik in a doubles semi.
Vera plays a second round mixed match.

Maria is the new Russian #1 at 17.
Anastasia, Svetlana, and Elena D. are all close behind.

Yeh but the tournament completely sucks for me as a Lena D and Nastya fan.

And to top it off, maria is now russian no1.

Anastasia is a streaky player. She will have good moments this year.
Lena had problems with the heat.

I'm looking forward. Maria, Lena, and Nadia have very little to defend.
I'd like to see Nadia make it 5 Russians in the top 10.

Then Vera Z. can join in later this year.

Masha did very well to reach the semis and nearly def. S. Williams. Missed 3 MP's. Everything is up to Marat, add the men's tennis and still a possibility to win the Slam. All hopes on Marat. :D
