Maiden ain't Scandinavian either.

I do like Yngwie though, he's Swedish (although not goth or black metal).

King Diamond is OK, kinda funny actually. I think he's from Denmark, right?

Never really cared for some of the Black Metal groups (e.g. Children of Bodom). I haven't really heard but a brief snippet of their music. Instrumentally, they're probably very talented, but I can't get past the (as I heard someone else put it) "Cookie Monster" vocals. LOL.

of scandinavia I like the band Nightwish :hearts: but I don't know of it's gothic or just heavy cause some songs aren't really gothic , but the dutch gothic bands are really good as Epica , After forever , Autumn , Nemessea

Nightwish is good and Tarja has awesome voice, it's just that IMO the songs are a bit too much all the same.
I like Limbonic Art, Immortal and Marduk the most, of this genre that is...
Also have to mention Charon and Sentenced even though they might miss the genre a bit. :)

It's definitely a calm version of Gothic :)

Aaron: Recommend you of Gothic? Hmm... good question.. try Nightwish, that song above, for calmer ones, but if you want heavier Gothic then there's Cradle of Filth and some more

King Aaron

Thanks. :) *goes off to search* I listen to Evanescence a lot and I understand they're not really gothic, if at all, so I just wanted to progress further. :)

Ravsieg

Nope.. many people quote Evanescence as Gothic or Symphonic Metal but IMO that's nonsense.. :p

It's great you wanna try Gothic :D Nightwish would be the best for starters

I think evanescense is more hard rock then gothic music ; gothic is for me a a mix from classical music ( with the violins , the cello's and the soprano ) and heavy music :music: ( the electric guitars , the drums , the bass and the grunts) and in evanescense you haven't got the classical aspect , IMO :)

King Aaron

Yeah, that's why I'm trying Nightwish. But I still love Evanescence though. ;)

So, would you classify King Diamond as gothic? He's definitely a soprano, and he dresses the part.

And I guess Children of Bodom would be death/black metal. I just can't dig the super-low-pitch-guy's-tearing-his-throat-up vocals on a lot of that stuff.

Phil Anselmo (Pantera) did that sometimes, and that's generally the Pantera that I didn't dig.....mostly their later stuff....Trendkill, etc.

well I thought soprano's where women  Tarja Turunen is a soprano and Floor jansen is a soprano but if he's a man he's or an alt or a tenor , but i always thought king diamond was black metal ( = more devilish  I think ) but maybe I am wrong cause I don't really like king diamon

I have heard of Nightwish (but not really heard anything 'by' them) - I think I will investigate like King... ;)

Gothic music (someone introduced me to some great Gothic music :) - I am very grateful :) ) - I love Clan of Xymox and Wolfsheim. :) I would say that some of my most favourite music ev-errrr ;) comes from this genre... (My favourite band EVERRRRR is Depeche Mode but I do not know if they really count as 'Goth'... Aaargh... ;) )

Cradle of Filth... I do not want to THINK of one of their videos that I saw/hid behind a pillow while it was on etc... O-M-GGGGGG... :speakles: This will bring memories back... *wails* ;)

What is Gothic music? They wear all black and try to be scary?

Gothic music is a mix of metal with classical. And I find it offensive to Goth people, who are anti-violence and nice in general.

This brings me back to my university days. I went thru a thrash/metal
phase. I loved those German bands like Helloween, Destruction and Kreator. Oh..can't forget the great Brazilian band Seputulra~! And
oh- how I loved Slayer.

King Diamond? :haha: Those high pitch squeals were something else~

Some of those bands were absolute funeral dirge's.
Candlemass Anyone?

Has anybody been listening to Japanese visual metal bands?
They've got some of the best bands around now. There's this
one band in particular that harks back to classic Euro gloom/metal
era. The group is called Gargoyle, and the lead singer has to be
seen to be believed. The singing is gutteral glass chewing.
looks like he's from God knows where! Can't imagine much
record sales except among people who like obscure underground
bands.

That's us

First of all, thanks Fiona for telling me about this thread

Second, not sure how gothic is 'defined' in Scandinavia but it's apparently not the same as in Belgium. I'd refer to the bands you are talking about as black metal or goth metal bands (or goth rock). Gothic for me is much more broad and has subgenres as wave, melodic goth, goth metal, industrial, elektro,.... I'm more interested in the melodic goth bands (wolfsheim, the breath of life, Clan of Xymox, deine lakaien,...) and industrial bands (das ich, hocico,...). Maybe The Gathering (good Dutch band) can be seen as goth metal? Or Lacrimosa?

Anyway, if you like goth metal maybe you'd like some bands I mentioned too. It's generally more calm music ;) but good nevertheless...

Oh and HIM is pure pop ;)

I haven't heard a Sepultura album in ages. When they first
came out, they didn't sing in English. Those albums were
really rough, and as the years went by and they moved to
the USA, the songs got longer. They sounded more metal
toward the latter stages.

Here's one of those interesting Goth/Visual bands. They do
all sorts of music; but it's pretty strange. Sometimes they do heavy
music, other times they don't.

The bands called Doremi- Dan. The lead singer is brilliant,
sort of oddly hypnothic. Oh- the entire band is a bunch
of men.

Google Videos, my new favorite.

Epica : Cry For The Moon :inlove: (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7765393167086510999&q=epica)
Lyrics, melody, everything. Great piece of art.

Epica : Feint, Run for a Fall & Memories acoustic :inlove: (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5549962866430891061&q=epica)
Good ballads, I think most recognize "Memories" cover.

Nightwish : Dead boy´s Poem :D (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-37326712011841196&q=nightwish)
DVD rip, great ballad.

Nightwish : Sleeping Sun :hearts: (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2215702649732789263&q=nightwish)
When I first hear this, I was stunned of the beauty of the song. Did not even knew they are finns.

Kamelot : The Haunting :inlove: (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-9101537619609402324&q=kamelot)

Kamelot : March of Mephisto :bounce: (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=15746497780041610&q=kamelot)

Dimmu Borgir : Progenies of the Apocalypse  (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8369956111082655856&q=dimmu+borgir)
Probably biggest budget video of the genre ? First 30 seconds likely enough for most.

Dimmu Borgir : Mourning Palace  (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-917858678334273139&q=dimmu+borgir)
For fans. Have to add that this was first I ever heard from them, and became fan...

Children of Bodom : Downfall :wavey: (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-652523355882396979&q=children+bodom)
Haven´t heard of 6-string wizard Alexi Laiho ? You have now. If this was first time good rep me ;)

Children of Bodom : Needled 24/7 & Hate Me ! (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-635212793555174206&q=children+bodom)
Same stuff as above. Btw. Tuska festival is held in heart of our Capital. Tourists reactions are always funny to see.
They are always caught of guard when about 15.000 people dressed in black, suddenly start to come out of trains, cars etc.
They are probably even less amused when they realize that metal mayhem is going to go on for three days ;)

Pantera : Cematary Gates  (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4486741079451166064&q=pantera)

Long stuff
Moscow 1991, Pantera, AC/DC & Metallica (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1648306492583625113&q=pantera)!

Within Temptation : Stand my Ground (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6800160091699739125&q=within+temptation)

Within Temptation : Angels (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3462818261239344078&q=within+temptation)
Ooo, too mainstream. But very nice elevator song ;)

Within Temptation : Memories (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3081220643631437622&q=within+temptation)
Great video, for everyone that has not seen Madonnas Frozen...

Opeth : The Drapery Falls (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3385647969174851687&q=opeth)
Opeth ;)
