Jerry Orbach in New York, Sept. 21

NEW YORK (Dec. 29) - ''Law & Order'' star Jerry Orbach has died of prostate cancer at 69, a representative of the show said Wednesday.

Orbach died Tuesday night in Manhattan after several weeks of treatment, Audrey Davis of the public relations agency Lippin Group said.

When his illness was diagnosed, he had begun production on NBC's upcoming spinoff ''Law & Order: Trial By Jury,'' after 12 seasons playing Detective Lennie Briscoe in the original series. His return to the new show had been expected early next year.

On Broadway, the Bronx-born Orbach starred in hit musicals including ''Carnival,'' ''Promises, Promises'' (for which he won a Tony Award), ''Chicago'' and ''42nd Street.''

Among his film appearances were roles in ''Dirty Dancing,'' ''Prince of the City'' and ''Crimes and Misdemeanors.''

RIP Jerry

We gets lots of American shows over here and I really like Law and Order and Jerry is definitely the best actor on the show. He'll definitely be missed on that show.

Thanks for posting that Liz.

You're welcome.

BTW, he was the only cast member from the original Law and Order who was still on the show.

He wasn't one of the originals. They had at least two other guys (Paul Sorvino and some guy whose name I completely forget) play alongside Chris Noth before Orbach came on board.

I didn't say that; what I should have said is that he was the only cast member from the original Law and Order who hadn't left the show after he first appeared, though he was slated to star on another Law and Order spinoff.

Apparently, Jerry Orbach battled this disease for a little over 10 years, but kept the illness a secret to only but a few family and friends.
